In this episode Edward Stow visits Tower Hamlets Cemetery on a very hot summer's day equipped with a special very large scale map of the cemetery.
He will show you the location of the following graves and highlight the main Ripper related features associated with these personalities... including Lechmere connections:
1) Dr Rees Llewellyn
2) Charles Jamrach
3) P.C. Ernest Thompson
4) George Lusk
For many viewers this will be the first time they have heard about the grave of George Lusk, Chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee.
A follow on video will look at the Lechmere family graves...
To me the most interesting aspect of the Jack the Ripper case is the historical and social context. I want to congratulate you on doing a wonderful job of bringing the period to life.

George Lusk has always fascinated me. Not as a suspect, but as a fellow craving attention, possibly to the point of manufacturing it.

I've watched most of your videos and thanks for sharing you knowledge on this fascinating subject. Having watched the Channel 5 documentary and your videos afterwards, I am convinced Lechmere was Jack The Ripper, I simply cannot understand how he was overlooked.

The cemetery is an amazing site and should definitely be preserved for its immense historical value. (It’s also very atmospheric and beautiful in a melancholy way.) If the abdominal wounds had been inflicted prior to the throat wound, wouldn't she have screamed bloody murder and wouldn't that have drawn the attention of anyone who may have been in the area? How would Jack have kept her quiet? Also, it is so sad to see this historical cemetery in such an unkempt condition. Shame and disgrace on the city. Since the city won't do anything about it, perhaps a volunteer group could be formed to clear out the overgrowth, mow the grass, and upright the fallen stones. Thank you for another excellent video, Mr. Stow. Looking forward to viewing your video regarding the Lechmere burials.
It is also believed she was strangled first, but presumably to unconsciousness rather than death.
@@thehouseoflechmere9407 Yes, that would be one method of silencing her. I imagine a couple of others would be a powerful bop on the head or a cloth moistened with chloroform.
Yeah there's just no way any logical killer who is wanting to remain undetected us going to go through all the hassle of having to not only keep all off those big heavy dresses & undergarments they wore in those days up with ine hand and go to mutilate with a knife in thr other hand. All the while the woman is screaming & thrashing around, not to mention hitting & attacking him. With his hands full his face is expised & defenseless. She could poke his eyes out and thr instinct would be to go for the throat or a hand over her mouth to shut her up. It just seems totaly chaotic & illogical for a devious killer like Jack to take part in it.

Definitely in this case... Syncope occurred before death but its not absolutely clear what caused it... With the other evidence gathered it looks clear she was unconscious.. I personally would take Harriet Lilley account as a time of death although without seeing the statement I'd have needed more detail in what she said. I've got my own suspicions about the culprit but to be fair I also doubt my own judgement... It can't be proved anyway.. Sometimes it's in the imagination

This place is why I don't want to be buried in the ground, just cremated and thrown anywhere.

Cat food dealership? Horse meat? Butchering? Lechmere becomes a skilled butcher for his mother’s business. He learns to dress meat for the market, opening up the carcass quickly and efficiently, removing meat and organs cleanly. Competent knife wielding skills later employed by him during his JTR murders?

Huge sums spent on social projects, yet areas of interest to future generations left to crumble into dust. There is so much neglect in local boroughs you'd think elected officials would promote initiatives to protect our past. No such luck.

I have a ancestor buried in Tower Hamlet Cemetery, I was wondering if you map has the location of the grave? Here is what I know "John Thomas Cox died the 19 November 1862, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and was buried on 22 November 1862, at Tower Hamlet Cemetery, London, in grave number 1138. He was age three years and eight months and five days."

It's worth saying that map of the cemetery is a state. Common graves weren't properly listed and some were reused and reused again - the map you have is from the 1880s, I think!

Is his height and weight recorded anyplace? If not, is there any way of estimating those?
There is no record and anything would be a guess based on the one photograph
Well, I am a year late to this but will respond regardless. As Edward already said, it's hard to guess by just looking at one photo. However, going by Lechmere's proportions I'm under the impression that he might have been slightly taller than the average man of his generation, so maybe 5'7-5'8. If that would be correct I'd then guess his weight at 155-165 lbs (the higher number applying to his younger self). My own measurements, 196 lbs at 5'10, also helped with my estimation of Lechmere's -- as far as that one is even possible.
Another year of the cycle of Jack cometh, each year my interest in this case increases.
Do you know if there are any Herbert family members buried in tower hamlets cemetery by any chance. They were my mums relative from east end in late 19th century

If lechmere was the ripper why did he stop? Or do you believe he continued but in a different area?
How on earth can Lusks stone not be there anymore? Did someone/group of people carry it off? I mean these things weigh a tonne and what the hell are you going to with it, keep it in your living room??
