The actual person the main character is based on, Yang Kyoungjong, got the most WTF life there is. He was a Korean civilian drafted by the Japanese to fight the Soviets in the Far East Theater; got captured by the Soviets, sent to a labor camp, and then press-ganged into the Soviet Army to fight the Germans; got captured by the Germans and press-ganged into the Wehrmacht to fight the Allies on D-Day; got captured by the Allies and sent to the U.S., where he lived until his death in 1992. It's almost as if the Universe decided to turn his life into a cosmic joke during WWII but left him no worse for wear at the end of it.
and he stayed in the US, didnt bother to go home.
He was born on March 3, 1920 in Korea(Since Korea was colonized by Imperial Japan). On 1938, at the age of 18, he was in Japanese prison camp in Manchuria(Manchukuo) he was conscripted to the Kwantung Army of the Imperial Japanese Army. In 1939, he was sent to the Mongolian border to fought against the Soviets during the battle of Khalkhin Gol and then he was captured by the Soviets and he was sent to the Gulags in Siberia. When he was in the Gulags, he was conscripted in the Red Army and sent in Ukraine to fought against the Germans during the 3rd battle of Kharkov and he was captured by the Germans. He was conscripted in the German Wehrmacht or the Heer(Army) and sent to Normandy, Vichy France(German occupied France) to fight against the Americans during the Allied invasion of Normandy(as known as D-Day) then he was captured by the U.S. Paratroopers. He was in the military prison until in the end of the war. He lived in the Illinois, U.S.A until his death in 1992.

The reason this was so heartbreaking, for me at least, was the fact that Jun-Shik was so selfless. Throughout the movie, Kim acts out only in the face to help others, even Tatsuo who would have killed him. I think Tatsuo realizes how selfless Kim's actions were, and when the gravity of the situation comes together, he loses it. That is why I cry, at least.

When I found this title I thought it was "just another hollywood war movie," I was totally wrong...This film is a testament to foreign film making. This Korean film reduced me to tears and had me clutching my heart in the end. My Way (2011) is the most epic Asian collaborated Korean bro-film I have seen.
It's really touching how the two men forgave each other and the Korean gave his identity to the Japanese.
No matter how many times I watch this movie, I always cry at the end.

I do too. What a touching and tear-inducing movie. What strikes me so profoundly is the sacrifice made by Jun-Shik Kim on behalf of a person who used to be his bitter rival and enemy. A heart-moving tale of sacrifice, friendship, and forgiveness.

all the movies based on the axis side, or "german or japanese side" are Soulbreaker, although many believe that these films are pro-Nazi,the people need to hear the stories of the axis soldiers too, including Germans, Japanese and voluntary divisions in the German ranks

And I agree, despite consistent portrayal of German soldiers as mindless Nazi who indulged in mass murders, the reality was very different. Many were honorable soldiers, brave and decent young men but were unfortunately commanded by deranged leaders who corrupted them and turned them into criminals. With that said, I know that there were many German soldiers who actively were involved in mass murders as a result of being brainwashed by their leaders.

gtaadicion Oh, I watched Das Boot and Stalingrad. I like both movies. Der Untergang was quite insane. Napola I also watched. It cast light on the emotions of the men at war in a fairly realistic way, especially men who were decent young men but then corrupted by their leaders, and who were torn between conscience and the soldierly duty which dictated them to carry out their orders. If what depicted in those movie is consistent with history, then I glad to know that there were still people who adhered to the voice of their conscience rather than blindly obeyed their murderous leaders.

User different perspective? This is my normal perspective, to be honest. Scenes like this are everything war brings us. Death, destruction, suffering, mental damage on the few "lucky" enough to survivors. I hope one day all of humanity will learn that killing those who stand in your way doesn't make the world better.
Please don't take this wrong, I do not mean to criticize your comment. I just think everyone should always remember that the bullets they pay taxes for are used to end lives. This comment is not only directed to you, but more to everyone else seeing this. This is what war is creating. If some of you readers are thinking that war is patriotic and important for the progress of your country, try reading a list of fallen soldiers of just one battle of any war. And imagine a backstory for each single one of them. We are all just humans, we all just want to live. When will we learn to let others live as well...
i think one of the primary things that made this movie AMAZING is the fact that they capitalized on emotion. You wouldn't think they were acting because of how great it was. The movie also showed a lot of relationships full of love and happiness, and when you saw one of the people in that relationship die right infront of the other it breaks your heart because you could see so much beauty in them, and even some of the most insensitive people may cry. Truly Amazing!
In real life, the character was Yang Kyoungjong, and when he was captured he was reported to Lt. Brewer from Easy Company, Band of Brother fans know him...

This should be considered one of the best WW 2 films list. Since it was base on a true story about Yang Kyoungjong.
Sadly most people would prefer movies when it comes to ww2 movies like Saving Private Ryan or Hacksaw Bridge. The only Asian ww2 movie people know about is letters from Iwo Jima which is slightly another sad movie but My Way takes it to another level. The tragic origins,Journey,Losses of friends and family, and living in a world that’s plague by the deadliest global war in history makes the movie the most tragic than any other ww2 movie Ive come across. The 2011 film is so underrated and rarely known when it comes to thinking of ww2 movies like Pearl Harbor or those other 2 movies I mentioned on the top.

I would of agreed until the ending. Movie was ruined for me nobody would ever do a naval bombardment after their troops have already landed on the beach nor would they throw in paratroopers on top of that. They just decided to throw history out the window for a ridiculous over the top ending.
If you have siblings, consider the sacrifice you would make for them and then watch Taegukgi: Brotherhood of war. It has the same actor Jang Dong-gun (JS Kim). Its probably the best war movie, even ahead of this film.

Oh.. my gosh i don't understand why people can't take this history seriously.. watch the whole movie before saying something.. First of all, Both of them aren't Japanese one is korean and one is Japanese.
First, Korea was colonized by Japan in early 1900s and was forced to become Japanese soldiers. Then During the Russo Japanese War, Japanese soldiers lost once and captured by Russians, forced to fight for Russia's War against Germany. Then Russia lost to Germany in a battle then got captured by German soldiers and fought as being Nazis. Then those German soldiers who got captured fought Americans in Normandy. And yes, it is a true story. And at the end of the movie, the reason Korean guy is giving the Japanese guy the name chain is that U.S. was allied with Korea at the time and Japan was their enemy. Because the Korean guy did not want his Japanese friend to get killed by American soldiers, he's saying that Japanese guy is now gonna live with the Korean guy's name.
I watch this movie every so often and every single time the ending gets me. Some people will be ignorant and criticize something they've never seen. This is easily in my top 5 favorite movies ever, it's the only movie that's ever made me cry.

Japanese troops were captured while fighting Russians. Soviets send them as cannon fodder to the Germans. Germans capture Soviet troops and forced them to fight as they did with many other men from other countries(The two soldiers shot by the Americans in Saving Private Ryan were Czechs forced to fight).
Japan had drafted Koreans from an occupied Korea to fight on their behalf, hence why one of the character was korean.

Except that it didn't remotely happen that way. The paratroopers were dropped the night before the Normandy Invasion much further back.
Tobasco They did a lot poorly.... The allied air and sea bombardment wasn't that effective, the actual guys fought at Kharkov, why are the German troops running around like loonies before the beach assault, why is a Mustang doing strafing runs.....
GhostJager81 Along with the p 47 and b17 bomber, the mustangs were semi-bombers so they helped as escort of heavy bombers and air superiority. they also made attacks to enemy ground
The ending was like a punch to the gut for me - wasnt expecting that. The Korean guy giving his identity to his Japanese friend. That makes the opening scene even more poignant.

I am just saying this movie was good, but what made this film was the ending.
These two men hated each-other, one took the other's life away. But through obstacle after obstacle, they stand together. They said "we will run together", but that didn't come to be... in the physical realm. As a final safe, one gives his name to protect his friend. Then in the last scene, the Japanese man runs under his friend's name... They ran together

Poor guys, they are first drafted into the Japanese army forced to fight the soviets in the Mongolian border. Then they are drafted into the red army fighting Germans. Then somehow join the German army fighting Americans on d-day.
And it was based on a real person

Just a little heads up...the Olympics was originally supposed to be hosted by Japan...but because of the war, it didn't happen. After the war the Olympics committee didn't allow Germany or Japan to attend the 1948 Olympics. This was Korea's first official Olympics and arguably when Korea wasn't officially split but a one independent country.
This movie may not be the best in terms of historical accuracy, but man, I loved this movie so much I rewatched it multiple times. Such a great, GREAT emotional masterpiece. It teaches that even though your countries hate each other, you can still love each other.
Exactly. The inaccuracies were terrible, the rest of the movie was a work of art. It also brought about the German's Ostlegion/Foreign Legion where no Hollywood film ever dared to show! Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, White Army Russian, Indians, Africans... imagine how many legendary stories like Yang's, happened throughout history that have yet to be told. The Germans had plenty of need for manpower and thus they took recruits from all over. The Beach Soccer/Football scene was amazing, and to think America was still segregated amongst its ranks at the time. History is priceless. I just wish they did a better job with the wardrobes, battles, time frames and military regulations.
This film made me appreciate foreign war films. Especially WW2 films. I don't like subtitle films, but this one was so unbelievably well made that it didn't bother me at all. Made me have to wipe tears out of my eyes more often just to read the words.

Hung Vu I completely agree. People tend to bitch about the historical accuracy but that isn't the point of this movie. The point is this wonderful tale of friendship with two former enemies coming and enduring together as friends. Really beautiful.
Agree. I don't accord attention to the accuracy of the movie, but rather on the fascinating life journey of these 2 men, how they ended up in a place thousands of miles away from their homeland, and how in the end, they overcame the bitter memory about their past to reconcile with one another, and the touching sacrifice one of them made on behalf of the other, and the other requited the sacrifice by competing in the Olympic in honor of his friend.

Best part about this movie is base on a true story. Of a Korean solider who got conscripted and fought. In Japanese, Soviet, and German armies. Before being saved and captured by the Americans.

At the end of the video, they are laughing and running together. but actually they didn't get along well when they first met. Japanese man was the grandson of the general, Korean was persecuted by him. Japanese man became officer of his own will, Korean man was forcibly drafted and under the Japanese man's troop. So when they were taken to Soviet prisoners, they fought until one side almost die.
But the korean character's personality was so generous that it was hard for even koreans to understand(he lost his family and friends because of japan). So the film did not receive good reviews in terms of composition(and historical, military evidence).
Whatever, the story of Asian who was taken to Normandy is very unique. After watching the movie, I cried.
How ironic is it the two finally became friends and the Japanese wailed after losing Korean friend?

Tatsuo began hating on koreans since his grandpa was killed by the korean freedom fighter.
He just sees jun shik as the representation of it (the people who killed his grandpa).
