"I do not care. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING is going to stop me from getting these ants." What a spirit! Rocky's motivation was probably not as intense. 🙂 Most inspiring words I've heard in a while. My favorite video so far because of your contagious passion.
Congrats! The video brought us along on the journey in a great way. It's nice knowing some of the backstory and being able to play a small part in the early days. Tenacity wins!
I found one three weeks ago, I found her on my yard so I picked her up to take her to a better place for her to dig, but by the time I was taking her to a park, she had already laid eggs so I had no choice but to keep her. She is living on a box with a wet cotton and she has laid about 20 eggs, she has a black thing which I think is the fungus, but when I give her leaves she puts them next to the wet cotton instead of feeding the fungus. I don't know the first thing about attas so I would like some help pls 😢.
Atta are fully claustral, they won't cut leaves to feed their fungus in founding. After 3 weeks she should have a large fungus, so if you're not seeing that then she doesn't have fungus.
A. versicolor usually fly the morning after a heavy rain at about 5-7am. rarely will they wait an extra morning, even in cases of extreme rain. A. versicolor also fly later into the year than many ants, having large flights in September, and even early October on occasion.
@@caants1571 doubtful, although you could possibly find founding chambers. if you do dig them up, though, it's unlikely to find their fungus, and you will need do donate new fungus to them from elsewhere
You won't actually see the pellet in their jaws, it's held inside a pouch in their mouthparts. If you don't notice any fungus growing in the first 48 hours, you should probably try to find a way to boost them with new fungus.
@@ArthropodAntics thank you so much. A lot of stress was relieved off of me now. I’m very excited to see my new queens grow into the powerful colony they were meant to become
@@ArthropodAntics I have a total of 6 queens I have one by itself a group of 2 and a group of 3 I have put leaves and petals of different types of plants that I first washed before putting in their founding chambers. The one that’s by itself seems to be the weakest. It’s the only queen with one wing remaining as well as her missing a leg. I decided not to put her in a group of three with the other 2 since I thought because she was weaker they might try to kill her. I’m going to leave them Be for a day or two then check up on them. I greatly appreciate the advice and can’t wait to give a update on a hopefully successful fungus growth
Now if you just want 1 queen for starting a colony think you went over board unless your selling some I could understand ..Great video great patience in getting these I understand tho Ive never gone to this extreme to get queens almost but I got tired then found out I was a month late bah and they were cara bara
Funny story, out of the ~75 queens I collected, two succeeded. Here in AZ the fertility rates are so poor that you need to collect a lot of extras to make sure you get a successful queen.

The largest ant species in America is Paraponera clavata or Atta laevigata, America does not mean United States. Nice video though, but not technically accurate thumbnail.
Dialects exist; America does mean the US when referred to in it. English is far from a logical language :) Dinoponera are probably larger in workers than those two too, and certain dorylines for queens.
dude, plz send me one! I've been dying to try to get one, I've ben trying to save money, plz i would love a colony. Its been my dream to have a colony of attas

Nothing better for the serotonin than being in a massive nuptial flight with hundreds of thousands of ants
Omg my favourite ant hunter posted
You lucky Mercian the largest thing flying mass like that around here is Lasius 😂
What a video! Can feel your excitement through the screen, congrats!!! We expect many more video updates

Very nice video .. day 5 was indeed amazing!
A very special experience indeed!
So much work! Nice job persevering!
Great video as always cheeto
Love it! Thanks for this video. As a (former) Atta keeper myself, good luck! I hope you can grow these as big, or bigger, as the last time!
Seeing them massed w flight was Incredible after only seeing a few here and there before on the various failed attempts.
Once you find atta, you must aqquire! good vid!!!!! (as always)
I live in AZ i would love to go atta hunting with you
i love your videos so much best ant channel how do you have 1.5K?!
Where in Arizona did u find these queens. I’m trying to find some queens too.
Where was this filmed?
This is me with Trachymyrmex except I haven’t seen one alate
Never back down never what
NEVER GIVE UP!
How did your previous atta colony die?
Both him and his dad were gone from their house and his dad turned the AC off, which killed all the fungus since it can’t survive warm temperatures.
Question, if proper permits are acquired, could these be shipped or is the fungus too fragile?
technically yes, but shipping fungus growers is risky, as it is easy for the fungus to be severely damaged in shipping.
@@ArthropodAntics dang. Being in the South East US sucks!

Not to sure if you know much about A. Versicolor, but do you think that with all of this rain they will fly through sunday morning in Joshua tree?

Great video as always. I am surprised that the mortality rate is so high. Have you tried housing them together to form polygynous colonies?
Atta mexicana is not polygynous so that'd just end up in more deaths
