Hi Selma, you are so right about the photos on the front of ranunculus pattern . I hear everyone singing it’s praise’s but when I look at the pattern it frightens me off. So after looking at yours today I’m going to go for it, so no housework, ironing,a closed sign on the kitchen I’ll be busy starting my ranunculus. Love from N.Ireland

A very enjoyable episode, Selma! Seeing your pretty project bags makes me want to buy some for myself and also your stash of yarn is very impressive. Wishes for your mum to be comfortable and happy. I looked after my mother and then my mother in law for almost three years in their last years. Our elders stay with us in our homes and giving them care and comfort is considered a privilege as well as our duty so don't apologise for sparing time for your mum, the sense of fulfillment it leaves us with is worth cherishing our entire life. Warm regards from India.

I would suggest that you knit a cowl with the yarn your friend Kate sent you . Thus it could feel like a hug around you from your friend as you’d wear it ! Espace Tricot have many nice cowl patterns ( free) with different weight yarns . Thank you also for the tv series recommendations... these series are keeping me sain ( d’esprit) during this lonely period as well as your unbeatable podcast Little Big Knits 🧶! 👏👏💕💕🙋‍♀️

Thanks for sharing your beautiful ranunculus sweaters and your sock wearing segment was awesome! For me, I’ve found 8.5-9 stitches per inch, 75% merino/25% nylon, slip stitch heel flap and gusset and keeping lace patterns away from the heel area as you mentioned all help my socks last so much longer.

Caring for mum. PLEASE do no apologize for taking the time to look after your mother. There comes a time in women's lives when we are needed by our ageing parents. It is a noble task that deserves to be revered. I like to think of the Japanese culture which respects and treasures older citizens' contributions to families and communities. I wish we Canadians could emulate this valued behaviour.
You are modeling compassion and empathy for your children and for us all, brava Selma.

Oh golly, you got some gorgeous stuff! Lovely. I really enjoyed the stories with the older socks. Good to know about how long they last. I've only used Reggia yarn based on recommendations from arnecarlos (they designed the colorways I chose) but now I'll look for independent dyers - seems like a good thing to do.

Really learned a lot from your sock segment, thank you.
Your Renunculus sweaters are so pretty, I've had the pattern in my favorites for awhile, but I'm a little intimidated, after listening to you talk about it I feel it may be time to give it a try.
Thank you also for the film at the end, your city is so pretty, the animals were wonderful.

Another lovely podcast Selma. Very interesting seeing and hearing about the sock yarns you have used. Up until recently I knitted my socks with commercial sock yarn but have started knitting them in hand dyed now. I buy a lot of hand dyed yarns for sweaters but had never used them for my socks. I've just finished my second Love Note and the Ranunculus is next to be cast on. I'm in Scotland and have just received my order of some beautiful fingering yarn from one of my favourite dyers here in the Highlands of Scotland so I'm almost ready to cast on. Yours are all very beautiful ....I especially love the one you were wearing on the podcast. I do look forward to your podcasts.... thank you so much for all the inspiration that comes from them. Till next time. 💖

Hello,. I love your podcast. I discovered it a week ago and am now binge-watching. I was so happy to hear your comments about the Ranunculus sweater. I have seen it on several podcasts and love it, but was turned off by the photos on Ravelry. With the “Ranunculus Love KAL" I think I'll have the nerve to try it once I get Christmas knitting finished. (That should be sometime in March ;-) ) I hope you see this post. I don't know if you will since it's quite a bit after the video was posted.

Good idea to try colourwork socks. They are super comfortable and squishy. I can highly recommend Ducathi's colourwork sock patterns. Great designs and her heels fit really well. And you get some interesting surprises under the heel as a bonus! I have learned that knitting her patterns, which suggest casting more stitches I usually choose for my feet, but on smaller needles, fit surprisingly well. Have fun! Oh, and also good practice for a next top downsock!

Sock review. Brilliant idea because hand knitted socks are meant to be worn! Your thoughts were interesting to me because I've started to add comments to my rav, project entries for socks that have now been worn and loved - or not - for a few years. As you say, it's very helpful to document how a particular yarn has behaved over time. I add photographs of mending, pilling, colour fading, lost shaping, shrinkage, etc.
Also, giving informative feedback to spinners, dyers, sheep breeder, etc. is valuable information for them which is always welcome.
    Love your podcast, Selma. xxx

Love your podcasts, best wishes for your mum. I'm in England, and I made my first pair of socks 21 years ago, in Opal Yarn, and they are still going strong. They have been worn most weeks of the 21 years, and the only sign of wear is the end of Yarn I wove in has started to become loose, so that was my sewing, not the Yarn. The 2nd pair I made, also 21 years ago, were in Regia Yarn, also still in use, no obvious wear. So, both those commercial Yarns are very reliable. Xx

I really enjoy your insights because you have been a very meticulous maker. I agree a gusset and slip stitch heel sock wears better than anything else. I have tried a couple of other heel methods and been disappointed so I stick with the tried and true. The type of yarn certainly matters and if you have never used any of the Paton's Kroy give it a try because it is a DK weight yarn and it wears like iron. I have a sock machine that I use pretty often but I still enjoy hand knitting socks to put a little bit of a pattern in it.

Love your Ranunculus sweaters! I hope to join the KAL. This sweater has been in my queue for a while and I've only just purchased the yarn for it last month. Thank you for showing how your socks are wearing. Working on new projects is always exciting, but it's equally enriching to take a look at what we've already created to see how they have worn, to understand what works, to simply honor the process AND the finished product. Wishing your mother well.

Moms win for time, then we go on. My secret for making socks fit is to make my own toe portion. I base it on a reverse toe up where I start decreasing after the tip of the littlest toe. And I try them on a lot, always standing and bearing weight. My favorite commercial yarns is Patons Kroy makes fun heavy socks and great for gifts and boots.

Another great podcast Selma and i cannot help in particular admiring the Ranunculus you are wearing. I had swatched thinking of a version myself using a bright turquoise lace wool and a strand of white mohair - and it looks OK BUT the more I look at your version (the one you are wearing) the more I realise that it is the clarity and almost 'architectural' look of the stitches - especially near the neckline I admire the most and they would get 'lost' I think in some colour mixtures .

    • @littlebigknits
      @littlebigknits  3 роки тому +1

I would agree that a more solid colour highlights the stitches better. Some tonal changes have less of an impact. Time to make another then!!

I love your parade of same style sweaters that is so me. I want to find a cardigan I can do over and over if I ever get brave and find the pattern and yarn I can get enough of and trust myself enough to try to make something I can wear.

I enjoy your podcast very much. You are knowledgeable, always good information, and it is very pleasant to listen to you.
You mentioned colorwork and narrow diameter of a sleeve. I recently purchased the Knit Picks set of interchangeable 2" tips. Suddenly sleeves and hats are much nicer to knit.

Thank you 😊 I have tried knitting with 9mm needles and it is way too challenging so I wonder if a two inch tip would be any different?

Thank you for the sock parade. Interesting to hear how the different indie dyed yarn blends held up. What cast off do you use for the top up socks? Best wishes to your mother (and yourself).

I hope mom recovers. It is very hard when our parents age. We try and take care of them and provide for them like the provided for us as we grew up. Love her and spend time with her, and do not apologize for hanging out with mom. I am wanting to start the Ranunculus sweater. I am relocating to Florida from Oregon (actually moving next Thursday) and I think a light weight airy sweater will be perfect. How do you do the neck again? I am not a tubular neck band kinda girl either and if I do a long tail cast on, how do I start? My daughter loves The Gilmore Girls. She has watched the series at least 3 times. Thank you for your episodes.

I just cast on 60, do a regular ribbing, increase to 90 after. Hope the move went well! I’m sure a ranunculus would be perfect in Oregon!

Another great podcast. Wonderful footage. I really like the current Rununculus sweater.
I've yet to get my copy of Making Stories but currently knitting some socks- downloaded my digital copy.
Oh and try the very first episode of Gilmore Girls. The best episode imo.

When you are a caretaker the most important thing to do is to take care of yourself first. Loved the long podcast. I knit (knitted) and I made potato soup in the instapot. Thanks for the company. Beautiful sweaters!

Thanks to your last podcast, I ordered a ring from Corina Lunita. I have yet to knit with it on a project. I strand two handed and love that but IF I'm ever brave enough to strand three colors... I think this will help with at least two of them. I will put my Roots and Rains fingering into a Ranuculus short sleeve sweater thanks to your enabling!

I was super excited to see a new episode! I found your channel just after your last episode and have been binging your podcast at the same time waiting for a new one. I don't know how you and other podcasters do it...trying to juggle family, work, knitting, and then sharing your journey with us. I do appreciate your channel as your knits keep me inspired to keep knitting and try different projects or yarns you have used, THANK YOU!!. A question for your 50th episode: how many sweaters do you have (i watched Kate's review of her sweaters...WOW! so much fun watching that) where do you keep them all, I have only a handful and starting to run out of room...and what is your favorite construction? raglan, yoke etc?

    • @littlebigknits

Thanks so much for sharing your socks. That's always fun to see. I have heard so many people talking about Ranunculus sweaters that I think I would like to find the courage to join a KAL. I wish health and strength to you and your Mom. It can be exhausting when there are health problems in the family so I'm glad you're getting out and walking, breathing in fresh air and clearing your mind. Take good care.

I miss Ottawa so much! It will be the first place I visit when lockdown is over ... sitting here working on a secret test knit for Sari. I also really like Knitting For Olive yarn - have some in my stash and I am going to make the Seleste tee when it is available. I did the Seleste test knit for the original version and it is one of my absolute favourite pullovers. I used Myak baby yak and it is a dream fibre to knit. Sorry to her about the challenges with your mother - sisu seems to be what we all need to get through these tough times.

@@littlebigknits I was born there and have family there. I always wanted to move to Ottawa, but it just never happened. My aunt knows your mother from church or a Finnish ladies group. Did you ever meet Pastor Matti Terho? He was a lovely man.
Your Lumme is lovely in the blue - I used stash yarn in Berocco Ultra Alpaca, and it looks a lot like the original. I loved knitting Lumme, and I left the collar long like a sort of mock turtle. Her Kuttar is a lovely pattern to knit - it is also one of my absolute favourites. I knit it in DK instead of stranding it because I find mohair is a bit too warm sometimes. I highly recommend it. Sari somehow manages to make complicated looking patterns, actually easy to knit. Hei hei

Aren’t kids funny, mine won’t watch some shows with my husband and I, they say they would be too embarrassed 😳.

We have a lot in common when it comes to socks. I almost always do toe-up, and I don’t like the afterthought heel. Too fiddly, it makes more ends to weave in, and I’m not crazy about the fit. I’m intrigued by the Sockmatician’s pattern for toe-up socks with a heel flap and gusset but haven’t tried it yet. I really enjoy your podcast.

The "old socks" segment was really interesting! And I decided to cast on socks in Hedgehog Fibers. I haven't dared doing that until now, because of the low nylon content. But thanks to you I know they wear better than I thought!
