    Intel: *_"3D-V Cache is good for gaming but not much for applications... So we will implement it, but only on server CPUs"_*
    Sorry Intel but your reasoning confuses me 🤔

    • @lycanthoss
      @lycanthoss 8 годин тому +20

      Intel CPUs are known to benefit less from cache than AMD CPUs, or at least that is the case with CPUs prior to Arrow Lake. They still benefit from it, just not as much as AMD architectures do.
      The reason Arrow Lake is slower than 13-14th gen in gaming is because of the memory latency from chiplets. The reason that latency is high is because they have cores on the compute tile, but the memory controller is on the SoC tile.
      In theory, more cache should help with that latency somewhat, however, based on leaks, Intel just seems to be moving back the controller on to the compute tile for the next desktop generation rather than adding 3D cache. But the generation after that should move the IMC back on to the SoC die with "countermeasures".
      So based on the leaks, it just sounds that Intel isn't ready to release their extra cache variants.

      Its horribly a stupid answer that makes no sense... "Not good for other applications"? Servers runs those "other applications"... So why put it into server chip!?!
      This is why Intel will keep failing. Terrible choices and nobody wants intel in their servers atm anyway with all their pass issues, they need to rebuild their trust and that's trough Gamers.

      @Hardcore_Remixer 7 годин тому

      @@lycanthoss Ok, I get it why they aren't putting 3D V-cache on desktop CPUs, but why put it on server CPUs? Or they move that memory controller back in its previous place only on the desktop CPUs?

    • @lycanthoss
      @lycanthoss 6 годин тому +4

      @@Hardcore_Remixer don't know why, but would assume it benefits some very specific workload on servers. The server market uses a lot of different accelerators for different tasks so that could be why.
      Could also just be that they were planning this earlier and the release date just happens to be now. Afterall, CPU releases take multiple years. Alder Lake was not a "response" to Zen 3. Alder Lake was definitely being designed before Zen 3 released and probably even before Zen 2. Considering Intel's 14nm problems, it might not even be a crazy idea to think that Alder Lake was originally planned to be the successor instead of all the Skylake crap they released.
      So it could be that the X3D chips caught Intel off guard and because of how long it takes to design CPUs (+ Intel might need bigger architectural changes to benefit from extra cache) they simply don't have an answer that is fully finished and ready to be shipped. Sometimes things in engineering just take time. No engineer or the company itself wants to ship an inferior product, especially when it comes at a loss to them.

    The most likely reason is that Intel's just isn't going to benefit from 3D v-cache. It has been tested out sometime ago, by HUB probably that when you limit their memory cache on Intel chip, they bare lose any performance which mean it isn't the bottomneck in their architect.
    This is an architectural issue, not a chace issue most likely. They will just have to go back to the drawing board and redesign their chip from the ground up to be competitive with AMD in gaming application. Simply adding more cahce is not going to help.

    I think its okay that Intel doesn't come up with a 3D V-Cache alternative, mainly cuz their cores may not benefit from it like AMD's do. Since with AMD latency has been an issue especially with the chiplet design so adding the cache would remedy that for games. But I'm not sure if Intel's implementation can benefit from the same solutions.
    And surely Intel's engineers must have tried it on their some gaming samples if they are doing it for server, maybe they just think that the improvement with the cache isn''t worth it

    This is the *exact* reason why 16 core X3D chips like the 7950X3D exist. The 8 3D 'slower' cores used for gaming while the other non-3D 'faster' cores are used in other non-cache sensitive scenarios. You get the best of both world, *in the same CPU.*

    • @trashpanda8437

      Yes but with one huge caveat .. The windows 11 scheduler, its a huge pile of crap that still to this day requires you the user to workaround its failings and use AMDs own special drivers to get it working correctly via core parking thus negating the reason you bought a 16 core CPU to begin with. The scheduler still puts threads on the wrong cores because it doesnt understand vcache.
      If MS ever actually fixes the scheduler it might make sense to buy a 7950 X3D but I think AMD is going to do that for them by simply getting rid of the non X3D CPUs. Not really sure why the non 3DX 9000 series CPU exist, no one wants them as they are trash hopefully they disappear for the 10k series and X3D becomes the standard.
      The 9950X3D is going to be a true gaming/productivity monster due to both chiplets having vcache which means the scheduler problems will go away as it wont matter which chiplet threads are running on.
      AMD solving Microsoft issues !

    Look at the business revenues from both companies. Intel is still double AMD in sales $. They dont only sell to gamers or the website you pull the graph from which have like 10k sales units.

    I swear, Intel is going the extra mile to sell AMD Ryzen processors more and more by the hour. Intel is now irrelevant for gaming and they know it. As for productivity, would you rather buy a 14900KS, spend $2,000 on premium cooling (EKG Delta TEC 2 Quantum Full Nickel Custom Loop Water Cooling), direct to die, delid, and tweak in the BIOS for two months?
    Or buy a 9950X and have to do nothing, or a 9800X3D and OC the piss out of it, for above average productivity gains that use 88% less power than the Intel 14900KS? And if you spend $2,000 on premium cooling (EKG Delta TEC 2 Quantum Full Nickel Custom Loop Water Cooling), direct to die, delid, and tweak in the BIOS for two months an AMD processor that doesn't require this, you get unmatchable performance. But if you don't do any of this, with AMD Ryzen it doesn't matter, you get zero compromises.
    So Intel doesn't need 3D-VCache? Then they don't need to compete effectively either, because they have no chance to compete without it.

    The real reason why Intel hadn't adopted 3D V-Cache yet is because, before Arrow Lake, Intel's monolithic architecture was not bottlenecked by its connection to the IO Die (which is called the "Infinity Fabric" by AMD), so it wouldn't actually have benefitted their CPUs to have the 3D V-Cache technology. But now that Intel has moved to chiplet design (which is called "Favoros" by Intel, their IO Die would be similarly bottenecked like the Ryzen CPUs. But since this is essentially their first time doing it on desktop, it's gonna take them some time to figure out how exactly they are going to implement the 3D V-Cache into their Favoros chiplet design.

    I think that maybe the GPU manufacturers (Looking at you Nvidia) need to take lessons from the latest generation of CPU's, and find ways to make them more energy efficient (and in turn heat efficient) rather than just looking for, fps go up. I think if they can reel in the power usage first, that'll be better in the long run.

    AMD targetting Gamers with 3D vCache.... yeah where is my Gaming CPU intel ? who asked you to make all in one golden CPU for everything?. AMD clearly knew that, thats why they split their CPUs to 2 divisions where one is the normal X and the other is the X3D. right now there is nothing to go against the x3d, its just alone there and you are doing nothing abt it.
    To make it even worse for intel, you need to get a new motherboard every 2 years when AMD is out there like "oh you have a 7800x3d?, here drop in replacement 25% faster" and they have done nothing abt that as well. no guy is goona come back to intel other than like the 2% who buys a new platform every 2 years at this point even if they make a CPU as fast as the x3d from AMD.
