Why so few views for this masterpiece?! It’s such a beautiful and atmospheric song. Heard it 20 years ago for the first time and it still sounds fresh.
The Sophtware Slump came out in early 2000. May well be the first solid gold musical masterpiece of this millennium - that's quite some achievement. I bought that album a few weeks after it came out and I've never been without it. I love it more than is healthy!
"Now I'm treating water", love this line because he actually worked at a water treatment plant. He probably saw so much of the waste and stuff people reject and throw away. Pure poetry.
Thanks for the trivia. I always thought he was saying "Now I'm treading water", which also makes sense, however, I think you're almost certainly right with your comment.
this sounds more than fresh even 23 years after its release. it captures the magic of technological progress like Ok, computer, but does it a little bit better.
what an unreal, fantastical band-- so laid back they should be from new zealand....damn these have been my 'new' favourite band since only 'bout 6yrs ago, never even heard of them before then....kn revelation. I am now in the process of acquiring, at great expense i might add, as much 'daddy obscura as poss. so a signed copy of..well anything really wouldn't go amiss plus i'll gladly pay for it, oh yeah. We love the slumping sophties
[Verse 1] Hewlett's daughter Loved her father And I think she loved me too For a little while [Verse 2] Hewlett's daughter I forgot her Now I'm treating water And waste at night [Chorus] High above the wrecks On ice shelves and glaciers I spy below the mess And measure the pressure Where sofas float on roads And somebody stole your guns Well, sir, I'm the only one To get back your stolen guns I should have been your son [Bridge] [Chorus] High above the wrecks On ice shelves and dressers With Crash United sewn On all of my dress shirts They firefell the roads And somebody stole your guns Well, sir, I'm the only one To get back your stolen guns I should have been your son
S. Özgür ÖYÜŞ I want to know this too! In this clip Tim ánd Jason are playing the Yamaha PSS270 with presets for Laughing Stock, A.M. 180 and obviously Hewlett’s Daughter too. Still figuring out what the others are... These are the best images I’ve seen in a while!

A very under-rated, fantastic track. Deserves a wider audience.
Made me want to make my own music with my own cheap keyboards and instruments. Amazing album, can’t believe it’s 20 years old
Love this song 🤙🏼 from Tahiti 🇵🇫🔥
One of the great bands when the history of rock is written they will get their dues rock on Modesto
Siempre te amaré, Grandaddy !

looping in my head for decades
[Verse 1]
Hewlett's daughter
Loved her father
And I think she loved me too
For a little while
[Verse 2]
Hewlett's daughter
I forgot her
Now I'm treating water
And waste at night
[Chorus]
High above the wrecks
On ice shelves and glaciers
I spy below the mess
And measure the pressure
Where sofas float on roads
And somebody stole your guns
Well, sir, I'm the only one
To get back your stolen guns
I should have been your son
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
High above the wrecks
On ice shelves and dressers
With Crash United sewn
On all of my dress shirts
They firefell the roads
And somebody stole your guns
Well, sir, I'm the only one
To get back your stolen guns
I should have been your son

Still a fine album 💖
Just Heard this tune on vh1, it's really good
Terrible shame about Kevin Garcia, the bass player in this video, who sadly died at 41 from a stroke.
20202 cool men!!!

Essa música é linda. Me lembra Europe Endless do Kraftwerk. Muito cool.

I know the mic he sings into is an AKG D112, which is usually used for recording bass drums.

Ahora estoy tratando el agua
Now I'm treating water
(Agua agua agua agua agua)
(Water water water water water)
Y desperdicio en la noche
And waste at night
Muy por encima de los restos
High above the wrecks
En plataformas de hielo y glaciares
On ice shelves and glaciers
Espío debajo del desorden
I spy below the mess
Y mide la presión
And measure the pressure
Donde los sofás flotan en las carreteras
Where sofas float on roads
Y alguien robó tus armas
And somebody stole your guns
Señor, soy el único
Sir, I'm the only one
Para recuperar tus armas robadas
To get back your stolen guns
debería haber sido tu hijo
I should have been your son
Muy por encima de los restos
High above the wrecks
En estantes de hielo y tocadores
On ice shelves and dressers
Con Crash United cosido
With Crash United sewn
En todas mis camisas de vestir
On all of my dress shirts
Incendiaron las carreteras
They firefell the roads
Y alguien robó tus armas
And somebody stole your guns
Bueno, señor, yo soy el único
Well, sir, I'm the only one
Para recuperar tus armas robadas
To get back your stolen guns
