    Thank you for doing this video Christine! I’ve been teaching quilting for 20 years, and I’m a fanatic about people closing their blades, I’ve heard far too many horror stories about injuries that have required fingers being stitched. I am also mortified by how some people use a rotary cutter on videos, and aren’t using safe practices. For a quilt, I will never use the lines on a mat-only the lines on the ruler as they’re more accurate. For bags or pillows or other larger cuts, that aren’t as precise, I very occasionally will use the mat lines, but they also get distorted when the same line is used a lot and aren’t good for precision quilting. Wishing you all the best with your surgery and a speedy recovery!

      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  Рік тому

      Thanks Crystal. I was concerned I may have been too harsh about safe practices, but these things can be so dangerous. I still can't get the image of that person sawing her fabric the way she did out of my head.😱

    I use an eight pound dumb-bell on the other end of the ruler away from me. If it is my big square ruler, I use two (eight pound) dumb-bells. Both of my dumb-bells have the soft non-slip coating on them (so that they don't scratch the surface they are placed on, and to keep them from slipping out of sweaty hands). The lines have faded on my mat; however, I have always used the lines on my ruler. Not all rulers are the same (some of them don't measure true).
    I know two women who taught their husbands how to help them with their cutting and sewing. Both husbands now love to cut, sew, quilt, and design their own crafted items. One of them, Tom, has won many blue ribbons for his quilting. Quilting wasn't considered an ART until men started doing it.

    So hope all goes well with your surgery, those blades even when no good for cutting, are still so so sharp. How scarey that blade sounded in that cutter a bit blunt to cut , but would definitely cut you. Well useful tips to people today. Very worth while. I am left handed so it looked odd coming from the other way when cutting. Good luck with your cutting Chris. Definite pass. Take carex

  • @carylannerosten
    @carylannerosten Рік тому

    When I learned the cutting, there wasn't special grip rulers and I was taught to place my pinky finger off the side to help prevent slipping. My issue with teaching that is simply not having a wide span. I'm using better rulers these day, as I am no longer a beginner, but the price of the special dotted line is prohibited to a beginner piercer. I have several older rulers with the gripping stuff bought in a roll, and I highly recommend this product to all persons who cannot afford the highest level of rulers, especially when we have just started the journey into piecing. I have 26 years behind my piecing journey, and only started changing out the most used rulers over maybe 5 years.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs

    If Chris needs any male fabric cutter companionship, he could check out Matt Jordan from Jordan Fabrics. 😊
    Their "500,00 Giveaway" video has a great crab crawl portion at about 9 minutes I believe. Their video called "Tour our Company" starts straight off I believe with Matt cutting fabric. I looked for quite sometime for another of Matt's cutting videos. It must be at the end of one of their tutorials. It was from him that I learned the trick to use a handweight on the ruler. It reduces the amount of the crab crawl, I feel. Best wishes for your surgery Christine. I look forward to your videos. I live on the northern edge of NY state.
