    Amazing as always! I have learned so much from you, Vanessa. I just retired from teaching high school for 33 years, so I’ve seen umpteen approaches to teaching. And you? Truly amazing in so many ways. I cannot believe that I can sew in a zipper complete with zipper tabs now. At first I had to watch the video several times, and now with practice I’m on my own. It’s great fun, and I’m happily sewing!

    I have two comments that could help as well. Add a small dumbbell weight on the top edge of your ruler. It will help you hold the ruler in place and focus more on your cutting hand. Second, use an ergonomic rotary cutter like Martellis. It allows you to follow the natural motion of your arm and shoulder, and prevent excessive curving.

    Thank you! This has happened to me almost every time I cut. Sadly I also cut my expensive mat rolling back and forth trying to fix those wrong cuts. But, now I know, and I just turned my mat around.

    Even though I've been sewing and quilting for quite a while I always watch "beginner" videos from you as there is always something to learn. This time something to share. The cutting mat can also be an issue- not if it's new-but if you tend to line up and cut on the lines even self healing mats can get hard spots from cutting. So if you're new but maybe have a hand me down cutting mat this could also be a problem. Two solutions that I have learned are I use your double ruler technique for cutting - only using the line to align my fabric- not to cut on, and turning my mat so I'm not always cutting in the same area. I treated myself to a new mat recently and it was amazing the difference it made! Thanks for all of your great tutorials!

      I was going to mention this too. I'm so frugal (cheap) I tend to use a mat as long as possible & yes, we do tend to use the same lines. Speaking of which, I need a new mat. Haha

    Glad I watched the video. My ruler generally moves as I am cutting. I will have to remember the "walk walk walk" up the ruler. Most of the time I don't get a good clean cut. Always have to go over it again. Your tips are amazing. Now I am going to have change the way I hold the rotary cutter. Can't wait now to start cutting and listening to that sound of the rotary cutter cutting away.....LOL. Thank you Vanessa.

    Thanks for this excellent video tutorial Vanessa! My favourite part was the “walk, walk, walk” your fingers up the ruler. It’s a hugely important part of the process. You described my cutting errors perfectly. :D I love your tutorials!! Just finished making my SECOND gorgeous Butterick 6214 top, thanks to your amazing and wonderful videos! So perfect for beginners.

    Perfect Vanessa thank you doll❣ 🤗💞 not keeping my arm up just enough all the time. Most the bit once and a while, was so frustrating. But another thing that caused that fluctuation for me, I'm TALL. LOL I was working at a table fold out ( one of those portable numbers ). It was hitting me in all the wrong places. It was even putting a wrench in my back so badly(it's a mess from being ran over multiple, 4 plus, times by a car🤪 lol God is Good) Because im not able to purchase a proper table..a lil ingenuity at play. I use giant tomatoe sauce cans to lift the table up a bit higher. It's not the best because even with the gripper shelf lining I had and repurposed😉, Where there's a will ... right! They still slide around on tile. Anyway, it was the angle in which I was standing (still do on occasion) and leaning left me dropping my arm. It all started to kicked in the first vid you released. As I'm watching this one lol it was very apparent.. like a snap. I could see myself standing and leaning to avoid pain. Not as bad with cans. Lolol betcha never thought you'd hear that phrase ... lolololol i never dreamt of saying it let shopping texting it in wide open spaces. Hahaaa standing in faith for an adjustable height table that folds out and tucks away. 🙏🏻
    Thank you for dropping this addition💞💞💞💞💞💞💞

    Another tip that helps me is to lock the blade in the engaged position rather than squeezing the handle and cutting simultaneously. I find I make more cutting errors when I’m doing both.

    Vanessa how do you suggest people hold the rotary cutter if the aren't able to stand to make the cut?

  • @katiejo911
    @katiejo911 3 роки тому

    So here's my question: My cutter only cuts as a fixed blade. Is the razor wheel supposed to stay still and just use that one piece of blade to cut? The blade is held on with a friction nut and when moved and locked outside the safety guard, it does not roll. Obviously this is a dumb question, but I would think the wheel would actually roll on that nut. That is why I'm looking at how to use a rotary cutter videos. But my question is not being answered by what I'm seeing. Maybe you can clear this up for me.
