Sounds like a ‘second verse, better than the first’ situation. Edit: still not a good book Edit 2 (yes I’m doing it again): I am firmly in the camp (of potentially just me) that tropes exist for a reason & aren’t intrinsically an issue, but it matters *A LOT* in how it’s handled.
This would be an absolute train wreck to try to put together and coordinate, but instead of reading half of the book, one takes even chapters and one takes odds would be a really fun format to listen to.
LET'S GOOOOOOO! I love the constructive approach you guys take with your discussions, engaging with these books on a nuts and bolts level. A while back, I picked up a copy of Twilight and had a blast going through with my highlighters and taking notes on the side. I went on this deep dive, going on to read Pride and Prejudice (Stephenie Meyer said it was a strong influence on her) It was my first time reading it, and taking that approach has changed the way I read and give feedback.
@@sbu_englishclubReading P&P after was eye-opening as far as the direction Meyer was trying to lead people with Edward. I just wanted to sit down with Stephenie and have an honest chat about some of the choices she made. I wanted to see more of an honest connection between the leads, and think it would've definitely served the story to lean into established vampire lore instead of avoiding it. It occupied so much of my mind space that I thought about doing a rewrite to work through what could happen if different choices were made.
I'll acknowledge the recommendation to read this first if you haven't gotten into the series yet, but the whole "back and forth" in time thing with reliving Isla's memories sounds absolutely miserable to experience. I thought people were joking at first when they said Alex intentionally chose to butcher the pacing in favor of this bizarre plot structure, and it being true and having also somehow been published in its current state is insane to me. I don't know if there is a correct way to go about having characters relive memories sporadically throughout the narrative, but if there is then Aster is nowhere near skilled enough of a writer to accomplish it yet
There probably is a correct way but the best way in the world wouldn’t be any better than just… doing it right the first time. Looking back on this episode I really should have driven the point home that those flashbacks were happening in media res during Lightlark. There’s no reason to withhold anything in the flashbacks other than to be able to say “what a twist!” So either the twist was worth it in Alex’s head or she decided after Lightlark was published that she wanted it So yeah, miserable experience all around. No idea how this will resolve in book 3
Thanks to this podcast and my fiance wanting to get her cards read twice and twice not getting to, I've just gotten a Rider-Waite tarot deck and I'm also really eager to divine some futures!
I just wanna point out that Aster commissioned some artworks for a special edition I think. There are at least 2, and both are just Isla and Grimm. So we know Oro isn't gonna be with her, which honestly sucks to me. Also you mentioned about how it's basically harder to get excited while writing just downtime scene between two characters talking, I just think what could make it better is if those characters are having conversations with food involved. Foods just make things better.
Ugh I would know but my special edition got delayed-I blame Aster And yeah you’re so right about food-in school they called those “communion” scenes they’re always a great shorthand to show that characters are getting closer
@@sbu_englishclub Yeah! Like, sharing with or even accepting food from other people already implies that you trust the other person. Personally for me, a level above that is the characters preparing food together.
