    I watch a LOT of woodworking videos from dozens of different woodworkers on UA-cam. I love how you move quickly from one step to another in the video, keep your message simple, and get straight to the point. Great work and thank you. I will be making a mallet similar to this next weekend.

    Funny, I have finally gotten my woodshop set up again after a few year hiatus, living in a house with no garage. I was just thinking I'd like to build a small wooden mallet for seating frets on a guitar. And I have wood to do it now! Great video as always.

    Outstanding project! The contrast of the two woods really adds to the beauty of the hammer.

    Like you, I have always been fond of using more than one species of wood in virtually all of my projects. The contrast is always striking, no pun intended here. I have so many projects on my 'to do' list. A new mallet is definitely on that list. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful job.

    Good video.
    I like the Walnut handle, but at janka hardness of 1010 & maple at 1450.
    Hickory at 1820 & Osage orange at 2760 would give you more hardness & a multi- colored hammer head.

      GarageWoodworks Leather helps to prevent the end grain of the head from getting mushy with lots of use. If you only rarely use your mallet you won't notice the difference.

    BBs aren't heavy. I wonder if they are much heavier than the wood he cut out.
    Use lead bird shot or split shot used for fishing. I think the results will be more pleasing

      +GarageWoodworks I'm a beginner, and I'm confused about the size of each piece you cut. The only dimension I heard was the walnut sides at 5 1/2 inches. How long/wide/thick are the rest? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I'm new and would love for this to turn out well

    Nice job. I made a similar mallet from hard maple and padauk. I didn't find the need for weighting the head though. Do you find the weight with steel shot is appropriate?

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  10 років тому

      I don't know about appropriateness, but it makes your strikes more powerful. The metal is a lot denser than the wood that was removed to create the hole. You can definitely "feel" the added mass as it swings and makes contact.

      I was able to find a pdf of the Shop Notes article he references at the beginning by searching for it on google. Just search for "shop notes no 2 1992". It was the first result for me. The dimensions of the head are a little small in my opinion, so I made mine about a 1/4 bigger. Hope this helps!

    Not fill chambers fully and would make nice dead blow hammer.

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  9 років тому

      depenthene More mass = greater force on impact = more effective

    • @briandavern8741
      @briandavern8741 8 років тому

      +GarageWoodworks Not really a dead blow is used for controlled tap to the project. Meaning you hit the piece you are working on and the head should not bounce or double tap like a carving mallet or hammer. The loos fill bounces back instead and lowers the inertia of the blow. Hence the name dead blow.

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  8 років тому

      +Brian Davern A deadblow decreases bounce back which is useful in tight spaces, but provides less force on impact. Less mass = less force on impact. It's a trade off between force and bounce back. I'd rather have more force as I am not working in tight spaces.

    • @briandavern8741
      @briandavern8741 8 років тому

      +GarageWoodworks Looking back now I'm feeling kind foolish as I clearly missed that the page you held up clearly says "joiners mallet" which as you said would require the extra mass.
      By the way your videos are very informative and well done.

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  8 років тому

      +Brian Davern No problem. It's actually a fairly common misconception that deadblow mallets are more efficient. Thank you!
