I watch a LOT of woodworking videos from dozens of different woodworkers on UA-cam. I love how you move quickly from one step to another in the video, keep your message simple, and get straight to the point. Great work and thank you. I will be making a mallet similar to this next weekend.
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Funny, I have finally gotten my woodshop set up again after a few year hiatus, living in a house with no garage. I was just thinking I'd like to build a small wooden mallet for seating frets on a guitar. And I have wood to do it now! Great video as always.
Outstanding project! The contrast of the two woods really adds to the beauty of the hammer.
Like you, I have always been fond of using more than one species of wood in virtually all of my projects. The contrast is always striking, no pun intended here. I have so many projects on my 'to do' list. A new mallet is definitely on that list. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful job.
Thanks for the video, I just finished my mallet this afternoon a combination οφ walnut, iroko and birch.
Cool. I hope you send me a picture; I'd like to share it with everyone on my Facebook page
Glad to see Garage Woodworks back! Good take on a classic project
Nice mallet and love Shop Notes Magazine. Love the tip on glue squeeze out with a straw. Keep up the good work.
Nice, love the walnut and maple. I made one out of solid oak back when I saw Steve's version. Awesome video. Glad you're back.
Fantastic video, Brian! This is my favorite so far. You set the bar high for yourself with this one.
Love those Grippers, I use them all the time too!
Thanks for your efforts in putting these videos together. Great work.
Love the mallet 😎
Beautiful looking mallet!
I have never made one of these dead blow mallets. I will eventually! Love this design! Great video!
Good video.
I like the Walnut handle, but at janka hardness of 1010 & maple at 1450.
Hickory at 1820 & Osage orange at 2760 would give you more hardness & a multi- colored hammer head.
Awesome video! Def a fun project!
Excellent video my friend, we will be making a couple of these for our little shop. Thanks again and have a blessed week.
Esse é o mais bonito que vi até hoje. This is the most beautiful I ever seen. Congrats
This is the second awesome dead blow hammer this week. NICE job...
I made one like that but I epoxied the bb's in to prevent rattle.
Shop Note is a very good resource. But now I have to decide whose mallet to build.
Tough decision!
Awe man, Drew you weren't suppose to see that.
Hee hee
looks stunning!
Great job! Congratulations!
The BB's are a great idea. One suggestion I would make is to use epoxy to stop any rattling, unless you like the rattle..... :)
Wow super cool love it
I mean its super dope
Man I got to make one of those....nice clear concise video...Great job....! Now I got a new project for tonight!
Blimey ! You're keen !
at least I'm waiting till morning ! Happy Days.
con tus vídeos pude encontrar por fin como hacer la prensa de banco totalmente de madera!! gracias desde Colombia
Great job! Very professional!
Beautiful job, dude!
Beautiful! I made a similar one as a gift to my father. Je hasn't used it. Guess that's the downside to making good looking tools.
Loves me some shopnotes. Great video.
In the Shopnotes they had leather facing too.
Well done.
Nice job. Thanks for the video.
Bonito trabajo. Gracias por el vídeo.
NO CHERRY ? I'M SHOCKED ! LOL, Look great !
The straw trick for glue worms works wonderfully, but how do you get the taste out of your mouth?
;)
Great work and videos! Subscribed!
outstanding video
Belo trabalho. O que são essas pequenas bolas que você usou para dar peso? Nice work. What are these little balls you used to give weight?
LOVE THAT......I MADE A HUGE 1....I MEAN HUGE.......BUT THE WOOD DRIED ON THE HAMMER PART AND HAS SPLIT.........PROTOTYPE,I WILL KEEP TRYING
Thanks I need to make à Mallet. Another guy used contact cement to glue leather on the head.
That's because in the original ShopNotes article, from '92, the author used leather. I don't think it's necessary. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks so much!
GarageWoodworks Leather helps to prevent the end grain of the head from getting mushy with lots of use. If you only rarely use your mallet you won't notice the difference.
Doesn't the head rattle from the BB's? I would fill the voids in the mallet-head holes with epoxy or some such.
nice and easy!!!
BBs aren't heavy. I wonder if they are much heavier than the wood he cut out.
Use lead bird shot or split shot used for fishing. I think the results will be more pleasing
+Ben Youmans the BBs are considerably heavier than the wood removed.
I just made this same design and I found the 2 degree taper left me with a width that was too wide to fill with the wedges. I'm gonna redo it with 1 degree I think
great !!!
i like your videos.. keep up the good work.
muito bom gostei e tentarei fazer um desse valeu...
Danny! Come down here and take your medicine!
amazing
Great Video! You made it seem very doable! Thanks!.... Next video... Please loose the music bed. I found much of it played over your voice. It detracts from the video, and gets me thinking I must have my iTunes playing! Great Video except for the music bed!
Subscribed cause that was a good one !!! Thanks for great upload, cant wait to make one. cheers Happy Days
Make a Mallet
You and I had a mallet fest this week! Great project Brian!!!
Weird. The universe is a strange place.
Last week it seemed to be bandsaw type projects. Maybe you and I will set a trend this week.
I would put in about a 50% fill of the BB's . The idea is a hundred hammer blows
when you smack something. I have a plastic version for metal work. Martin
Do you mean so they shake around?
MUY BONITO
Quick question. The smaller side of the bevels ; was that the top or bottom side of the mallet head
Can you give us the length and width of your wood?
bravissimo!
looks like an ice cream sandwhich...lol
Nice work. Do the BBs rattle?
Not that i can tell.
Is there any job you don’t use the jointer?
Mowing the lawn.
I love your videos, and I don't see the plans for sale on your site...but, I was going to ask...How are you selling ShopNotes' plans?
I never said anything about selling these plans. A novice woodworker should be able to build this based on the video alone.
GarageWoodworks
Ok, in the description of the video, you say "Plans for Sale", which lead me to believe you meant THESE plans. My apologies. I agree, a novice woodworker should be able to follow this video for the build, or Steve Ramsey's, Woodworking For Mere Mortals version. Thanks again!
+GarageWoodworks I'm a beginner, and I'm confused about the size of each piece you cut. The only dimension I heard was the walnut sides at 5 1/2 inches. How long/wide/thick are the rest? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I'm new and would love for this to turn out well
where I ancontro the ax this plane in Brazil you know
The custauma this ai
Nice job. I made a similar mallet from hard maple and padauk. I didn't find the need for weighting the head though. Do you find the weight with steel shot is appropriate?
I don't know about appropriateness, but it makes your strikes more powerful. The metal is a lot denser than the wood that was removed to create the hole. You can definitely "feel" the added mass as it swings and makes contact.
I'm not sure why but I like your videos more when they aren't 16 mins long.
What are the dimensions of the pieces? I can't seem to find that info anywhere
I was able to find a pdf of the Shop Notes article he references at the beginning by searching for it on google. Just search for "shop notes no 2 1992". It was the first result for me. The dimensions of the head are a little small in my opinion, so I made mine about a 1/4 bigger. Hope this helps!
It does, thanks! This will be my next project!
Очень хорошо
BBs arent very heavy. I would have used lead shot or lead split shot
+Ben Youmans Do it!
Not fill chambers fully and would make nice dead blow hammer.
depenthene More mass = greater force on impact = more effective
+GarageWoodworks Not really a dead blow is used for controlled tap to the project. Meaning you hit the piece you are working on and the head should not bounce or double tap like a carving mallet or hammer. The loos fill bounces back instead and lowers the inertia of the blow. Hence the name dead blow.
+Brian Davern A deadblow decreases bounce back which is useful in tight spaces, but provides less force on impact. Less mass = less force on impact. It's a trade off between force and bounce back. I'd rather have more force as I am not working in tight spaces.
+GarageWoodworks Looking back now I'm feeling kind foolish as I clearly missed that the page you held up clearly says "joiners mallet" which as you said would require the extra mass.
By the way your videos are very informative and well done.
+Brian Davern No problem. It's actually a fairly common misconception that deadblow mallets are more efficient. Thank you!
does it make noise when you swing it??
+James No
I know that it has been 2 years, but why didn't you fill the space in between the BB's with epoxy? Is there a rattle?
+Jeremy Morgan No rattle. There isn't much space remaining. Epoxy isn't necessary.
Wow you replied quick for a 2 year old vid that is. Thanks for taking the time to answer me
Cool. Now how about subbing?
Yeah sure. I like your content so you deserve it
If he were to leave even more space (not filled all the way) he could have made this into a dead blow hammer.
what oil do you use?
For this project I used boiled linseed oil.
4:01 What if I don't have a mallet?
Chris M. Use a piece of wood
Great mallet. Keep it away from the wife.
MAIL IT TO ME
Ho Hum........can you do ANYTHING without power tools? Americans dont seem to realise that most of the world doesn't have all these fancy tools!
I am not going to make a separate, custom video for every part of the world, specific to the tools that those people happen to have. I do not have the time, nor interest in doing this, nor do I think it is humanly possible. I suggest you find someone else to watch or make your own videos. Take care.
You heard me. How old are you...5?
+Gary Williams Yes. I am 5.
+GarageWoodworks me too heheh
