Lol! Did u see him as that arrogant bastard Steve Horn in The Terminal List? He's good. From good man slash warrior to complete psychopath. Very good performance. But u shud see James Reese. He's the Navy SEAL version of Spartacus.
Even though its a show a lot of these things happened and here we all are pathetic , living the good life we ALL have no idea what people back then went through, it's a sad world
Such a heartbreaking and pivotal moment in the ENTIRE series and definitely the last straw that breaks the camel's back where the fire of rebellion truly takes off in Spartacus. Both actors sell the gravity of the moment SO well, too...the inevitability of it, the futility in resisting it and the immeasurable sorrow of losing the last beautiful aspect in Spartacus' life in Varro as he was the truest of friends. 😭
This was crazy sad when seeing it for the first time. Made that rage for the Romans and their arrogance really come to a head. Also was the moment that reminded Spartacus of who he really was and who he really was in the eyes of the Romans.

@@Maxsumms Speak for yourself brother. I served in SOF in two theaters of combat, was shot twice and nearly bled out and lost over 20 friends. As far as "day to day living" goes, yes, most don't have time to think about what's really important and how good we have it.
And tragically Varro was a Roman himself, Spartacus and most of his "army" never really understood that it is this fucked up system that even misstreats these who are roman-born if they have bad fortune, not the Romans as a people. You see this when later in Nevia kills this smith who is a friend of Gannicus just because he is Roman. This man was poor, he never had slaves. And after conquering this town, Spartacus sees that the Romans can be normal people, women, children who are free of any guilt. These complicts and dilemmas are timeless and will always be, still in todays wars and conflict we can see them. humanity is fucked up.
I love how throughout the entire series, precisely BECAUSE of the gratuitous sex and violence, the viewer, like Spartacus, is gradually lulled into the emotional state that maybe there is some honor or glory in being a Gladiator and to fight in the arena...that perhaps, if you can only let go of the past and who you were, one could learn to embrace this sort of life as 'honorable' or 'glorious'. But then they hit you with this scene and the truth is instantly clear - there can never be any honor or glory for those whose lives are, in the end, measured in coin and are not viewed upon as human beings, no matter how incredible their achievements or deeds. I don't think any scene in any fictional media portrayed the utter cruelty of slavery better.
