I LOVE this wife-sharpening series! She is a really quick learner and shows everyone that while this is definitely a skill to learn, it’s not brain surgery. She is making it look easy! Three cheers for you both!
I'm not sure what folks are complaining about. The two of you together are just "lovely" and "charming." Well done, to both of you! Many thanks for the information and the fun.
Thank you for pushing your husband to make some content. Getting on camera for your love of him and doing something you couldn't give 2 shits about. I'm part of the 95% that appreciates it.
Another great Wife Sharpening video ! Don't tell Tree but the "dudes" are pretty happy with her in the videos. I like the way she is looking at the very beginning like, "I'm so bored"& then smiles when you walk over.
Very nice change up! The only part hard to watch was you splitting Bricky's Wig with the K390! Can't believe you'd treat Bricky that way after all of his loyal years of service! Thanks Pete and Mrs. Pete! Loved it!
Watching you both, is for me like a good Christmas movie. So respectful of each other. That is picture perfect husband and wife. Sharpening is therapeutic process, but sharpening by you is heavenly !
I enjoy the videos you do as a couple, great chemistry, keep up the good work! Even when the videos aren’t knife centric I still enjoy watching the creativity and humour in your videos.
This is so brilliant!!... Of all the videos I have watched about sharpening, this is what has convinced me to get the blade grinding attachment. You did such and amazing job and thank you for coming on the camera and help with the creative lul
God I love you two. I am so glad you folks are working together on things. It is beyond impressive to have these past few video's present a way of being not only a tutorial, but also a colaboration to approach the process as a whole. Again, thank you good people. NOW GO PLAY Dragons Dogma 2 my friend!!!!
I think the guide is just a reference to help you build muscle memory. Uncle Randy probably sharpens his Buck 110 on the bottom of his coffee cup while riding on horseback through a flooded mountain stream during a sandstorm cuz that's the way he has always done it. Go with what you know.
Really enjoying this wife series, thanks for pulling Pete out of his slump. You learn fast and done a great job. Just be careful on powered machines when you are changing belts and adjusting things with it turned on, a blip on the trigger can do damage to the fingies.
I really enjoy using this setup. It's great if someone wants me to sharpen their meh to decent (x50CrMoV15) kitchen knives, or "touch up" their pocket knife as an aside when they're visiting. For my normal use though, I use this l'il jammy for reprofiling knives quicker than manual methods before finishing the sharpening elsewhere. I keep the wheels closer together and use the stiff belt kit to reduce the convexing of the edge. I've found on average, the angle reading on this is one degree higher than you'd get on a fixed angle system (its 17 degree setting is about 18 on a KME or WS Precision Adjust). The X grit readings on the belts are kind of annoying. That's the fault of Norton though as that's how they rate the grits for their Norax belts. Wish they'd print the standard grit equivalent on them, but it's not too important. For reprofiling, you HAVE to be careful of heat buildup on the blade that can ruin the heat treat, where that shouldn't be an issue for normal sharpening. For those harder steels, I'll keep a tall cup of water and a rag to the side. Do a pass, dunk the knife and wipe it dry. The Tormek sharpener doesn't have this issue... but it's also about $700 USD more expensive and is more cumbersome to clamp the knife.
I noticed the same thing about the angle indicator where the actual angle of the belt is 1° greater than what is indicated. I'm sure they did it for a reason maybe to account for the belt slack creating the convex profile? Either way, this system is incredibly effective and versatile, and with some practice can produce repeatable, extremely sharp edges!
Really enjoyed these videos. (Not to say I don’t enjoy the videos pete used to make) pleas continue the great work entertaining us and also bringing us backyard science. Pete will soon be out of work. His wife will sharpen all the knives. Maby she will even take over all the knife reviewing and cuttests 🤪
K390 is actually quite easy to sharpen in my experience. I know its a high hardness high wear resistance tool steel but its remarkable how well it sharpens all things considered. I dont consider it any more difficult to sharpen then S30V or magnacut
Beautiful wife and great channel. First time here and will be coming back. I was actually thinking about picking up the KO elite from Worksharp. I have the Guided Field Sharpener and it works great for just putting a edge on a knife and nothing fancy otherwise your just spending more time sharping to get it lazer sharp which is not all bad.
G'day Pete, Mrs. Pete, .... personally I'm comfortable with a steady enough hand, but yes indeed, why no guide at the right height and distance ........ easier, quicker and far less room for error. I think it is that way, (longer belt side unobstructed), to cater, (freehand), for any number of sharp edged tools at odd angles, think mower blades and other garden tools for example; .... even though there is actually an alternative "Tool Sharpening Attachment" available. In any case .....when I order the BGA .... I will be making a removable attachment ............ for the removable attachment ; ) Great anywhere, but aint it grand to have a properly sharp kitchen knife. Fantastic vid once again folks !!!!!!! Cheers Duke. P.S. dont even think about using a chef's knife on ring pulls Mrs. Pete, ...... a spoon, or dare I say it, even a butter knife, is the go ....... and ready, willing and able to effectively get all the contents out once opened ; ) Btw Pete, do you go as far as to maintain butter knives, ........ have to be the easiest next to SAKs and other more basic steels found on most mulitools .... hehehe ; ) Also btw, ..... have you seen Felix's recent vid on Rockwell and other hardness scales ?, if not, certainly worth a look, I had some idea due to my previous job, though certainly helps with a simpler, but still detailed enough presentation IMO.
You should definitely get a leather stropping belt for that BGA it really makes a huge difference, since you already put green compound on your 12k grit belt use something even finer on the leather belt. It will give you that edge you're saying convex doesn't do and I don't think I agree lol, I have had really good results with that machine and its what I primarily use to sharpen these days. Thanks showing!
I wish my wife would sharpen our kitchen knives on the KO blade grinder... Especially after I catch her chopping short ribs with an extra hard and thin vg10 gyuto instead of the faberware I keep for such tasks..
I completely understand the pretend precision of freehand systems. The adjustment suggests much more accuracy of adjustment than a typical human can maintain. I can get a decent edge on a slack belt but I prefer a system that I can fix the true angle and not screw up once set. But I’m also an overly analytical/detail person.
Note for the Onion Wife: my wife wants to let you know that she’ll never get the half hour back from when I made her watch the Cursed Spyderco Advocate review your husband made, and she’s still bitter over a year later. 🤘🏼😂🤘🏼
I actually had feelings when You thanked the lovely wife!! You guys are awesome and thank you for playing through your funk!! Perhaps you could get dressed up and have a shave when you feel like it♥
Credit where credit is due.. I have a pocket pull through sharpener that lives in the sheath of a budget end survival type 6 inch blade 1095 steel 1/4 inch thick.. full tang.. Basically its a knife that I don't mind beating the hell out of with a big stick lol.. I would never use it on one of my more precious knives but.. For whatever reason the cheap pull through sharpener does a good job for what I use the knife for.. it even has a good emergency whistle built in lol..
The Ken Onion Edition with the grinder attachment works great if you need to just touch up blades that already have an edge. I have burnt out 3 of them puting a complete edge on knives. Worksharp has great warranty and replaced two of them but the last one i had to replace on my own dime. In Canada they cost $300 a fair penny. The motor is way to weak to do any real grinding. The grinder attachment just puts way to much strain on the motor vs using just the "pull through" They need a 2.0 version with a more powerful motor ;)
G'day mate, I've heard that said before. Though for a complete new edge/reprofile, I always start, (carefully), with a bench grinder and/or linisher, even an angle grinder on occasion, especially with larger knives, axes/machetes and the like. I really dont think its designed to be a stock shaping tool, its overall size and in turn belt dimensions, are a dead give away, (and there are the "get out" clauses on page 8 of my manual) ....... even though they've marketed it as a "Blade Grinder Attachment" and incidentally, there is such a thing as a "Tool Sharpening Attachment" too, but again, I wouldn't be expecting it to do proper HD metal work. Ultimately, it's horses for courses mate, I reckon you've done very well to get, not one, but two, replacements out of them. Cheers Duke.
I've reprofiled hundreds of knives with the blade grinder attachment and haven't had a single issue with this machine. Maybe you are using too much pressure and bogging down the motor, or maybe you just got 2 defective units.
i’m looking into a cbn wheel for it - mine only takes 200mm wheel so cant get a blackstone for it sadly, only the standard, japanese waterstone or diamond/cbn whichever it is in 400 or 800. I will probably get the 800
@@CedricAda I only recently got to know a professional knife sharpener around where I live in Germany, he uses CBN and resin-bonded diamond wheels on his Tormek T8, as well as felt wheels with diamond emulsion for polishing. He‘s able to start from 80 (!) grit, if a lot of metal needs to be moved and goes all the way up to 0.25u. Will be interesting to see what you‘ll come up with ✌😊
