Jon machinist 45yrs here have you disassembled the frame from the adjustment screw and vertical support bar. I would like to add 2 assist springs to keep light tension on the whole thing, like a press
@@broken1965 I think the assembly is more akin to the tool feed drive on a lathe: a worm gear with a parallel shaft. So all that was needed was additional bearing pressure on the shaft side. Unfortunately they left that side open hence the zip tie fix, no way to fit a bushing there.
@@daryenmirabal2656 just saw the question. If I was looking for a portable kit, the WSPA is much better than the Lansky. The latter’s stones fall out and crack in the middle of sharpening and just for that I would boycott the brand, so disrespectful I find the lack of proper adhesive. But, since it was my first fixed angle sharpener, here’s the truth: It nearly destroyed my confidence in the ability to sharpen knives. With all its shortcomings, the small WSPA is a decent portable tool.

@@wolverinegnr Before you pull the trigger, check out my videos on XARILK Gen 3. Just saying. Save some scratch, brother. Just for that I’d look at my other suggestion.
@ Nice video just when I thought I had my mind made up back to the rabbit hole I go. Lol Since you have both which one seems like it will outlast the other and do you find that they give the same results as far as putting on an edge? Thanks
I can’t speculate on longevity, but the plates availability at every possible level and cost would sway me to XARILK. Everything on it is TS Prof compatible at 1/5th the price. And they have responded to my original critiques and changed the design in 4 weeks. If it bothers you that I’m recommending it over the US-made one, I take comfort in watching Chinese company kicking a Russian one. Here’s my associate link, be advised, I will make about 3.3 bucks if you buy it 😂 amzn.to/3DAFUZK It ships with aluminum backed plates btw, thanks to my earlier video critiquing the plastic ones.

I ran into the same angle sharpening issues when I sharpened my first two knives. Thank you for the tips, you have a new follower and I will recommend your channel to my friends as well!
Was doing research because I was thinking of picking up this product. Was a little bummed when you were pointing out the issues but had a quick emotional turn-around when you had such elegant and cheap fixes! I'm so glad I found this video and I think I'll pull the trigger on the purchase along with some bushings ;)
First. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!! I also have the professional sharpener. I’ve used it from "Victoninox "to Magnacut steel. I’m gonna solve the problems 1 &2 this afternoon. Thank you again I never had problem 3 maybe because I don’t use the original stones. I bought, from Gritomatic a 6 inch stone holder (hapstone brand) and I use Venev centaur double side stones and Nano Cloths with diamond “spray”. The scratch pattern in the blade is better. My problem with this system is with long knifes. A 8 inch blade, if has 15 deg at the center of the clamp, will have 10 deg at the tip or at the heel, no matter how you clamp the knife. Another problem with long and thin knives is that they bend using only 1 clamp. 2 clamp system is better. Anyway, my kitchen knives cut towel paper even with those isues
You should take snippets from this video and make a short as it’d boom 🙌🙌 have thanked you before for this video and now that I’ve implemented the fixes, can’t thank you enough!!
Thanks for the idea! But UA-cam monetization for Shorts is so dismal that I try to keep short content to a minimum. It’s just rubbing me the wrong way how they take advantage of the content creators!
@@CuttingBoardRx Think of it as advertising for your longer videos. I can watch 30 shorts in 15 minutes, but the only reason I happened across your channel was because I searched this subject specifically. Either way you got a sub though!
@@CuttingBoardRxYou would be surprised at how effective shorts are at gaining new viewers and subscribers. A lot of the other bigger channels has more views on shorts than than videos.
This is exactly why I hate Taylor Martin and people like him. You’re one of the few out there that actually reciew gear and aren’t afraid to comment on them. Great job!
Thank you for an excellent presentation and elegant solution. There are no perfect products - this should be self-evident to anyone who's aware of the vast array of different knife sharpening systems out there. But your simple and inexpensive fixes for the deficiencies you found in this product is extremely helpful and I know I will be implementing them when I receive mine in a few days.
Thank u so much for making this video! You’ve made the work sharp elite actually seem like a much more compelling option now. I was afraid I’d be forced to go with some of the sharpeners in the $600 and up range
thank you for this. Glad I saw this before my pro came in. I would have been very angry to see the same issues as the original. This is amazing. Thank you. All other reviews are just blowing smoke. This is real use. Thank you.
This is a GREAT video! My hat’s off to you. Not only did you uncover design flaws, you thought out and tested fixes. It’s a shame that one has to make these modifications to a brand new design to allow it to give consistent results. Shame on the engineers at Worksharp. I am currently considering an upgrade to a better mousetrap than my Hapstone Pro. I would not give this a serious look until Worksharp makes these fixes in the manufacturing process. At this price point there shouldn’t be this level of inconsistency in their design.
An excellent review sir. I do sharpening for a business. I had added the WS Precision Adjust to my line up today and I appreciate the quality content and attention to detail. Thank you, for making of the video.
I watched I'm just not interested in Jimmy rigging a couple hundred dollar knife sharpener. I'll save for a prof or something similar. Great videos keep up the fantastic work sir👍
Another channel mentioned 2 more problems. 1200grit diamond stone not included and an adjustable stone holder for any 1' x 6" stone. Great review, ECN and make it work solutions. Kaizen's are not always good for quality. Now days it's dollars in, dollars out and dollars left in the middle.
12.5K + 1. Plus a like. This was interesting. I have the less expensive model. The rod modification and the rotator ought to work. Got a nice new set of chef knives for Christmas, so this might well be a good mod. Thank you!
good video, love it when someone fixed a problem i didnt knew i had. tip, i use tormek honing pasta, its great on the leather strop, and gives morror edge easily.
Absolutely love these hints/fixes and they come to me a day after I sent mine back. 😒 However, I think I will order a new one, implement these fixes and carry on. Loved the sharpener otherwise, although I'm placing the Work Sharp Ken Onion Sharpener into my tools tomorrow when it gets here, which I have also used. One thing - Can you find a way to get the clamp about a quarter turn tighter to hold the blade from laterally wiggling, if that makes sense? Thanks bunches!
@@CuttingBoardRx We need a means to apply a little more torque to the "nut", I think. A larger one perhaps? Can you make this happen for us oh worthy one?
Interesting. Mine arrived today and didn’t come with the two external nylon bushings yours has on the top and bottom of the rod. And has almost no wiggle at all on the blade clamp. But the bronze bushings will help me with the handle
I just got my Precision Adjust and the stone carrier plate doesn't have screws to get access to the bushings, which I bought alongside the unit. I am confused.
@@k-entertainment Wow! Sorry to hear this. I heard from one viewer that he got the screw-less carrier when he purchased the spare carrier from WS separately from the sharpener. That was months ago. I wonder if they more interested in making money off of these carriers by making them harder to maintain? Forcing you to spend $40 months down the road… I would return both, if that’s the case. Screw them. I’m using XARILK Gen 3 now anyway, there are couple of videos about it on my channel. Sadly, for $150 less, I got a higher quality Chinese sharpener than this US made one…
I've been kicking myself for not getting a tsprof instead. I knew it was a difference in the vice from flips. I did get good results not flipping but just unclamping and changing sides manually.
Thank you for the brilliant information, really annoys me that Worksharp overlooked or didn’t recognise these issues at design and testing phase, especially as they had a previous iteration to learn from, Worksharp will never thankyou, they would be admitting their fault in design, it almost put me off buying it to be honest, I’ve already ordered it, just waiting for stock to arrive at my UK store, I’ve also ordered the bushings off Amazon which are arriving today. I never trust sponsored reviews from the larger channels, unfortunately this is UA-cam. Thanks again for the brilliant test and review, Subbed 😊
If I had to bet, the prototype had more metal hardware content than the production version. It happens often enough that the engineers lose these arguments with the suits that mind the profit margins. Besides, they were probably thinking that a person who sharpens blades for a living would not buy a tool like this. This is a product geared toward (borrowing photo camera terminology) an amateur or pro-mature DIY home-shop sharpener.
Ive got one of these on the way and will be interesting to see if I need some of these fixes as well. Im thinking about actually mounting mine to my workbench, and when I watch this it kind of makes me want to even more. When Im watching the very slight amount of wiggle you still have after each fix, it looks as though its the entire unit that is still wobbling a little bit. I just wonder if there will be situations where I wish I wouldnt have mounted it, but I cant really think of any and its not as though its a permanent thing. There are a lot of mods out there for these things on etsy and such, some look pretty intriguing.
A few things to consider: 1. When you're measuring the flex of a the jaws in the knife sharpener, you have the measure the variation between the movement of the blade and the pivot of the rod that holds the abrasive. If the plastic base flexes, causing them to both move the same amount, then you would not affect the angle at which the abrasive contacts the blade, and it would not be a problem. 2. If the mount of the pivot, or the jaws flex when force is applied upward or laterally, it should not matter. You won't be applying force upward or laterally when you sharpen a knife, so there would be no reason for those parts to be engineered to brace against force in those directions. Doing so would add un-necessary cost to the unit. 3. When you measured the angle of the rod above and below the abrasive, was it contacting the table? It was hard to tell from the camera angle, but that would naturally change your outcome. Really, the measurement should be taken with the abrasive contacting the blade, as that is how it would be used. The comparison would ideally be between the contact at either end of the abrasive. 4. How much force are your applying when you sharpen? The task does not require much more than the weight of the arm and the abrasive, and the combination of your complaints about flexing and the wear on those two bushings implies the use of more force than is necessary.
Following up on this, you showed the rotational movement on the clamp when it not in the down position supported by the base bridge. Would assume the bridge serves to eliminate/reduce any such clamp movement. If not, you should show that flex while in the intended, down position.
Update! Update! Work Sharp is shipping units with screw-less plate carrier. I haven’t had a chance to play with one. So! Don’t buy the bushings until you receive the sharpener! You won’t need them for at least 3 months anyway!

Oh, and Work Sharp changed something on the plate holder, it no longer comes apart to put in the bushings. They want you to buy a whole new rod assembly.
Here’s my associate link, be advised, I will make about 3.3 bucks if you buy it 😂
amzn.to/3DAFUZK
It ships with aluminum backed plates btw, thanks to my earlier video critiquing the plastic ones.
@@CuttingBoardRx I purchased the XARILK yesterday using your link in the description. Seems they a little back ordered they have mines shipping Jan. 20
@ It’s understandable, considering how many people finding out that it is compatible with TS Prof.
Thanks for supporting my channel!
most informative review , and problem solving I have seen for a long time, brilliant video.
Thank you for the tutorial! I have a work sharp pro on the way and now have those brass bushings coming too :)
Glad I could help!
Thank you for such great information. I will try and modify my new WS Pro knife sharpener. You also earned me subscribing and following your channel.
your channel is a cut above! I'm super impressed with the detail of your videos.
Wow, thank you! You can help my channel grow by sharing this video with your friends!
Thank you for these fixes.
It’s my pleasure to be of service!
Excellent! I’m about to buy this sharpener and this probably saved me hours and headaches on setting it up as optimally a possible! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for sharing the tips. I just received one of these for Christmas & was really excited to try it out this weekend. After seeing this video, I ordered the sleeves & grabbed some zip ties from work. I’m going to try using it regularly 1st & then I’ll modify it to see the results.
Thanks! I would appreciate you sharing this video with your friends to help the channel!
First. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!!
I also have the professional sharpener. I’ve used it from "Victoninox "to Magnacut steel.
I’m gonna solve the problems 1 &2 this afternoon. Thank you again
I never had problem 3 maybe because I don’t use the original stones.
Thanks for commenting! It’s great to hear from a fellow sharpening nerd!
Well earned sub. Thank you for your service to the community.
Thanks for the sub!
This is exactly why I hate Taylor Martin and people like him. You’re one of the few out there that actually reciew gear and aren’t afraid to comment on them. Great job!
You are a legend, man!
Thank you for your review. I ordered and installed the Bearing Sleeves through your link. Big difference!
@@doulos4Jesus Thanks for commenting! Appreciate you being a subscriber!
Phenomenal upgrade improvements!!! Thanks for posting. 👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it! I’m trying to boost subscription to my channel. Would you please share this video with your friends?
Just Shared the vid with two good friends and collectors!@@CuttingBoardRx
@@musiclaw1486 much obliged!
@@CuttingBoardRx 👍
BTW, thanks for the replacement Brass Bearings recommendation. Should be here tomorrow!
Echoing a previous comment. If I had seen this before buying I would not have purchased. Thank you for the fixes
The thing to remember: there are no perfect machines.
Thanks for your time and content, great stuff man!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thank u so much for making this video! You’ve made the work sharp elite actually seem like a much more compelling option now.
I was afraid I’d be forced to go with some of the sharpeners in the $600 and up range
I don’t have a first hand knowledge of the systems you are referring to, but folks who actually used them, report some of the same problems
Thanks for the REAL review and how to "Fix" the shortcomings.👍👍👍👍👍👍
thank you for this. Glad I saw this before my pro came in. I would have been very angry to see the same issues as the original. This is amazing. Thank you. All other reviews are just blowing smoke. This is real use. Thank you.
Glad I could help! Share this video with your friends please to help me grow the channel!
Brilliant, intuitive, and necessary for those of us who've bought this $250.00 system, and not getting "professional" results. Many thanks. SUSCRIBED.
I saw your video and I really liked the fixes that you found.
They need to hire you Sir
Great video! Thank you. 🙏
Thanks for subscribing!
Thanks for watching! What other tools do you use?
I was going to buy this to replace my other precision sharpener. I won't now. I'm picky with my knife edges, so I'll go another route. Thanks
Hmm. Sounds like you clicked right through the fixes that get it to work much better.
Now days it's dollars in, dollars out and dollars left in the middle.
thank you
You're welcome
Great video series! I really enjoy your no-nonsense approach to everything. My only nemesis is i can't get a good clamping on a flat grind.
12.5K + 1. Plus a like. This was interesting. I have the less expensive model. The rod modification and the rotator ought to work. Got a nice new set of chef knives for Christmas, so this might well be a good mod. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Fantastic. Brilliantly simple fixes.
Thanks! But it’s not like it was hard to figure out.
good video, love it when someone fixed a problem i didnt knew i had. tip, i use tormek honing pasta, its great on the leather strop, and gives morror edge easily.
Fantastic Tutorial.
I have just the precision one and a reusable zip fixes so perfectly the the wobbely adjustment!
Are you talking about the small WSPA? I will try that.
I've got the bushings ordered, and I will be installing the zip-ties. Thanks for the link.
Awesome video !!!!thank you sir
Thanks for subscribing!
Thanks for that. Great stuff.
@@John-oz1do Thanks for watching! Please look at my videos in the Work Sharp Playlist, there some more useful hacks there.
Double the price and buy the TS Prof Blitz, amazing piece of engenering and crazy accurate.
Sir, you just gave me an idea for the next video!
@@CuttingBoardRx We need a means to apply a little more torque to the "nut", I think. A larger one perhaps? Can you make this happen for us oh worthy one?
@aremel I am setting up a test to see if more torque would translate into more holding power
Forcing you to spend $40 months down the road…
I would return both, if that’s the case. Screw them. I’m using XARILK Gen 3 now anyway, there are couple of videos about it on my channel. Sadly, for $150 less, I got a higher quality Chinese sharpener than this US made one…
@@k-entertainment thanks for making me aware! I added this information into the video description and my pinned comment.
BRAVO! Well done! Thank you!
@@brussell2932 thanks!
Excellent! Thank you for your contributions!
It’s a pleasure to add value to the community!
Bought the bushings thanks
Great! Happy sharpenings!
What a terrific, helpful review. Thanks so much. I am ordering the sharpener, and a set of bronze bushings. today.
Frank
Great real in depth review! Many thanks!
Well done, I have this sharpener and will immediately apply your improvements 👍
Refreshing! Excellent review!
Thanks!

Nice-I'm making the upgrades!
Can you show us some tips to upgrade the fishing boat version?
Awesome video! Smart thinkin'.
Glad you think so! Hence the Rx in the channel name, as in prescription ⚕️
A few things to consider:
The task does not require much more than the weight of the arm and the abrasive, and the combination of your complaints about flexing and the wear on those two bushings implies the use of more force than is necessary.
your questions are very good, I am currently working on a video that will hopefully answer some of them! Stay tuned!
Following up on this, you showed the rotational movement on the clamp when it not in the down position supported by the base bridge. Would assume the bridge serves to eliminate/reduce any such clamp movement. If not, you should show that flex while in the intended, down position.
