Jon machinist 45yrs here have you disassembled the frame from the adjustment screw and vertical support bar. I would like to add 2 assist springs to keep light tension on the whole thing, like a press
@@broken1965 I think the assembly is more akin to the tool feed drive on a lathe: a worm gear with a parallel shaft. So all that was needed was additional bearing pressure on the shaft side. Unfortunately they left that side open hence the zip tie fix, no way to fit a bushing there.
@@daryenmirabal2656 just saw the question. If I was looking for a portable kit, the WSPA is much better than the Lansky. The latter’s stones fall out and crack in the middle of sharpening and just for that I would boycott the brand, so disrespectful I find the lack of proper adhesive. But, since it was my first fixed angle sharpener, here’s the truth: It nearly destroyed my confidence in the ability to sharpen knives. With all its shortcomings, the small WSPA is a decent portable tool.
This is the difference between someone that is reviewing a product and someone that is getting paid to review an item. CBR is really doing a great job with the to the point no BS videos.. it's very refreshing!
The longer I watched the video the more my attitude changed from "he's just nit picking and trying to find fault" to by the end "that's legit wear and tear and he's right the flex is almost completely removed by things people have at home or can buy on Amazon for nothing"... great video and great fixes.

This is hands down the most useful video I’ve seen yet on this device. Thank you for the clear and easy to follow fixes. I applied all 3 and the difference is substantial.
Extremely good and helpful. I bought my first sharpener when I was barely a teen and try another every few years. I hope this one will be the-first one that actually works for me.
Did your three tips and they all worked well, the zip tie on the clamp receptacle was a bugger but got it done. I have a wicked edge set of stones and strops and wondered if the rod sizes were the same. They are and I have just gained access to a huge of amount of stones, best part there are two grits on each wicked edge stone.
I've watched several of the other Work Sharp Pro "reviewers". They all are mostly the same. After watching your review and simple fixes I decided to purchase the Work Sharp Pro. I've already purchased the bronze bushings and have the zip ties on hand. Thank you for your in depth reviews.

Discovered your channel because Greg Medford reacted to your criticism of some poorly sharpened knives from his company. Since then, this has become one of my favorite gear channels. Nice to see you returning to your "roots" towards the end of the year: proper sharpening as well as very elaborate and justified nagging. There are way too many advertisers disguised as reviewers, so a closer look is always appreciated! Pointing out flaws may not make you popular with everybody but it will (hopefully) lead to improvements. Really cool that you have already come up with some simple fixes yourself!
I think some guys are trying to be a knife reviewers for a living and that’s not an easy way to earn your pay. I had three affiliation offers to date and turned them down because they all came from Chinese startups that are trying to take advantage of less learned of the US consumers.
Thank you for the video. I really like my Worksharp pro and use it often. I think the things you pointed out and found a solution for will make my experience even better. I hope you will let us know if/ when Worksharp responds or comments on your findings. I think they should appreciate your video, especially as you were a promoter of their product. The only negative I think they might perceive is that you suggested your viewers send the inferior-bushings along with a thank you to Worksharp. Other than that they should be appreciative. Thanks again for the video and suggestions.
Haha! I intentionally poked fun at their engineering department! I am of that profession and if I was a betting man, the bet would be the prototype was all metal and somewhere along the way the design got “optimised” for production. The logic is that professionals would use stone wheels or shop belt sanders so they didn’t expect some amateur doing 20-30 sharpenings per month. Thanks for the great comment!
The biggest flaw with this type of guided sharpener is that the rod is anchored in one spot. This means it swivels in a perfect circle. Well, unless your knife blade is also the same shape of that circle, your angle is going to change from the base to the tip of the blade. Try measuring your angle with the arm centered on a flat part of the blade, straight out perpendicular to the blade....then keep the angle reader on and move the sharpening stone over to the tip: your angle has changed! The longer the knife, the more pronounced this problem will be. Even the $1200 Wicked Edge has this issue and nobody talks about it.

Thank you for an excellent presentation and elegant solution. There are no perfect products - this should be self-evident to anyone who's aware of the vast array of different knife sharpening systems out there. But your simple and inexpensive fixes for the deficiencies you found in this product is extremely helpful and I know I will be implementing them when I receive mine in a few days.
Appreciate your machinist background. If I didn’t have the Edge Pro and KME sharpening systems already I’d buy one of these Worksharps and modify with your fix.
I find using the 18 degree give me a crazy sharp edge. I will be doing these mods on my worksharp, I already loved mine but now it'll be even better thank you! Glad you share this unlike others who would keep this information to themselves.
I’m not sure that the big UA-cam knife channels like Metal Complex or Neeves Knives have the time to go in depth. This video took about 18-20 hours to make over a 3-day period and I don’t think they have the time to do that kind of work as they put at least one video per day to keep the income flowing.
I really love the results I get with the Worksharp Professional Precision Adjust, it's an awesome sharpening system and a pleasure to use. These simple yet highly effective fixes also made a very noticeable improvement to my Worksharp's accuracy and stability as well, and the brass bushings arrive tomorrow. First. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!! I also have the professional sharpener. I’ve used it from "Victoninox "to Magnacut steel. I’m gonna solve the problems 1 &2 this afternoon. Thank you again I never had problem 3 maybe because I don’t use the original stones. I bought, from Gritomatic a 6 inch stone holder (hapstone brand) and I use Venev centaur double side stones and Nano Cloths with diamond “spray”. The scratch pattern in the blade is better. My problem with this system is with long knifes. A 8 inch blade, if has 15 deg at the center of the clamp, will have 10 deg at the tip or at the heel, no matter how you clamp the knife. Another problem with long and thin knives is that they bend using only 1 clamp. 2 clamp system is better. Anyway, my kitchen knives cut towel paper even with those isues

Great work. Not only identifying the issues, but low-cost solutions. Hats off to you sir. Hoping Work Sharp integrates these solutions into future releases of this excellent sharpener. Once again sir many thanks for this excellent video.
You should take snippets from this video and make a short as it’d boom 🙌🙌 have thanked you before for this video and now that I’ve implemented the fixes, can’t thank you enough!!
Thanks for the idea! But UA-cam monetization for Shorts is so dismal that I try to keep short content to a minimum. It’s just rubbing me the wrong way how they take advantage of the content creators!

thank you for this. Glad I saw this before my pro came in. I would have been very angry to see the same issues as the original. This is amazing. Thank you. All other reviews are just blowing smoke. This is real use. Thank you.
This is a GREAT video! My hat’s off to you. Not only did you uncover design flaws, you thought out and tested fixes. It’s a shame that one has to make these modifications to a brand new design to allow it to give consistent results. Shame on the engineers at Worksharp. I am currently considering an upgrade to a better mousetrap than my Hapstone Pro. I would not give this a serious look until Worksharp makes these fixes in the manufacturing process. At this price point there shouldn’t be this level of inconsistency in their design.
Plastic is not suitable for long lasting precision mechanisms. Shows us what kind of R&D Work Sharp has. Glad you engineered an easy remedy to the problem. Bravo!!!!
In business books it’s called a Hewlett Packard model: sell a printer at or below cost and then sell very expensive proprietary cartridges for it. That’s what is going on here, they want you to buy the plate carriers over and over. PS. It’s no wonder they are in cohutz with Benchmade!
One has to assume Work Sharp determined what consumers would pay for their product and then made decisions on which components to use to make it profitable. Despite the name, I’m not sure any professional knife sharpeners would choose this over a more competent tool, but this provides what most people would need in a sharpener and uses more advanced components than their other products.
good video, love it when someone fixed a problem i didnt knew i had. tip, i use tormek honing pasta, its great on the leather strop, and gives morror edge easily.
I watched I'm just not interested in Jimmy rigging a couple hundred dollar knife sharpener. I'll save for a prof or something similar. Great videos keep up the fantastic work sir👍
An excellent review sir. I do sharpening for a business. I had added the WS Precision Adjust to my line up today and I appreciate the quality content and attention to detail. Thank you, for making of the video.
Thank you for the brilliant information, really annoys me that Worksharp overlooked or didn’t recognise these issues at design and testing phase, especially as they had a previous iteration to learn from, Worksharp will never thankyou, they would be admitting their fault in design, it almost put me off buying it to be honest, I’ve already ordered it, just waiting for stock to arrive at my UK store, I’ve also ordered the bushings off Amazon which are arriving today. I never trust sponsored reviews from the larger channels, unfortunately this is UA-cam. Thanks again for the brilliant test and review, Subbed 😊
If I had to bet, the prototype had more metal hardware content than the production version. It happens often enough that the engineers lose these arguments with the suits that mind the profit margins. Besides, they were probably thinking that a person who sharpens blades for a living would not buy a tool like this. This is a product geared toward (borrowing photo camera terminology) an amateur or pro-mature DIY home-shop sharpener.
I made a completely new center from a piece of aluminum and pressed a bronze sleeve on one side and a threaded sleeve on the other, I just need to figure something out with the lower plastic. With such a second sharpener, all these elements should be stiff and made of metal with bronze bushings or abrasion-resistant Teflon bushings.
@@CuttingBoardRx I'm still working on it, I'm waiting for parts from China, bushings, a feed screw with a smaller thread pitch and a nut. When I deal with it, I'll send you the finished version of the corrections stiffening the sharpener.
This video is worth its weight in gold. You'd never see paid reviewers address issues and design flaws like these in their videos, let alone provide solutions on how to fix them. All the flaws aside, would you consider this system recommendable for sharpening beginners? I'm currently undecided whether to invest into regular (diamond) sharpening stones and learn to sharpen by hand, guided sharpeners like the Precision Adjust or electric ones like WorkSharp's Knife & Tool sharpener.
Not only would I recommend this WSPPA for sharpening beginners, but considering it’s price, I would suggest getting the basic WSPA ($60) as the first sharpener for a beginner. Either allows you to focus on the fundamentals of edge geometry without having to deal with the Human factor. Starting with a hand held or wet stones will lead, with 90% probability, to forming bad habits. Get the edge geometry and burr formation right first, then, when you switch to hand grinding, or belt sanding you will immediately know if you’re not forming a correct edge. I would not recommend the composite stone Lansky system, you know, the red box one that is selling for $39 or anything by Smyth. They will distract you from learning the fundamentals and then break 😂
@@CuttingBoardRx Thanks a lot. Really appreciate the insight. Obviously, the basic WSPA has been on my radar as well but since I'm more of a buy-once-cry-once kinda guy, I feel like I would immediately regret not getting the WSPPA instead. 😅 In terms of build quality and improvements, it certainly seems like the better investment in the long run, even though it would mean living off of Ramens for a while. 🤣
A few things to consider: 1. When you're measuring the flex of a the jaws in the knife sharpener, you have the measure the variation between the movement of the blade and the pivot of the rod that holds the abrasive. If the plastic base flexes, causing them to both move the same amount, then you would not affect the angle at which the abrasive contacts the blade, and it would not be a problem. 2. If the mount of the pivot, or the jaws flex when force is applied upward or laterally, it should not matter. You won't be applying force upward or laterally when you sharpen a knife, so there would be no reason for those parts to be engineered to brace against force in those directions. Doing so would add un-necessary cost to the unit. 3. When you measured the angle of the rod above and below the abrasive, was it contacting the table? It was hard to tell from the camera angle, but that would naturally change your outcome. Really, the measurement should be taken with the abrasive contacting the blade, as that is how it would be used. The comparison would ideally be between the contact at either end of the abrasive. 4. How much force are your applying when you sharpen? The task does not require much more than the weight of the arm and the abrasive, and the combination of your complaints about flexing and the wear on those two bushings implies the use of more force than is necessary.
Following up on this, you showed the rotational movement on the clamp when it not in the down position supported by the base bridge. Would assume the bridge serves to eliminate/reduce any such clamp movement. If not, you should show that flex while in the intended, down position.

I don’t have a first hand knowledge of the systems you are referring to, but folks who actually used them, report some of the same problems
Brilliant, intuitive, and necessary for those of us who've bought this $250.00 system, and not getting "professional" results. Many thanks. SUSCRIBED.
BRAVO! Well done! Thank you!
@@brussell2932 thanks!
I've got the bushings ordered, and I will be installing the zip-ties. Thanks for the link.
This is the most honest review of the work sharp on the internet brother. Plus you had solutions not just complaints. This is the first video of yours I have watched and i subbed within the first half.
I appreciate your subscription! Welcome to the channel!
@@CuttingBoardRx thanks brother
your channel is a cut above! I'm super impressed with the detail of your videos.
Wow, thank you! You can help my channel grow by sharing this video with your friends!
Genius! Don’t just review the product, but show how you can measurably improve it. I hope Work Sharp uses this info to improve their products. I hope they also show some $$ love. I’m now a subscriber.
You are the second person who thinks I’m a genius. The first one is my mom🤣
Appreciate the compliment!
Thanks for your time and content, great stuff man!
Glad you enjoy it!
Great work. Not only identifying the issues, but low-cost solutions. Hats off to you sir. Hoping Work Sharp integrates these solutions into future releases of this excellent sharpener. Once again sir many thanks for this excellent video.
Thanks for being a subscriber!
@@CuttingBoardRx Think of it as advertising for your longer videos. I can watch 30 shorts in 15 minutes, but the only reason I happened across your channel was because I searched this subject specifically. Either way you got a sub though!
@@CuttingBoardRxYou would be surprised at how effective shorts are at gaining new viewers and subscribers. A lot of the other bigger channels has more views on shorts than than videos.
Excellent review! Thanks!!
@@ExamonLyf Thanks for subscribing!
I've been kicking myself for not getting a tsprof instead. I knew it was a difference in the vice from flips. I did get good results not flipping but just unclamping and changing sides manually.
Thanks for the REAL review and how to "Fix" the shortcomings.👍👍👍👍👍👍
thank you for this. Glad I saw this before my pro came in. I would have been very angry to see the same issues as the original. This is amazing. Thank you. All other reviews are just blowing smoke. This is real use. Thank you.
Glad I could help! Share this video with your friends please to help me grow the channel!
@@CuttingBoardRx Always the consumer that gets it in the end.
Well earned sub. Thank you for your service to the community.
Thanks for the sub!
Well done, I have this sharpener and will immediately apply your improvements 👍
Fantastic. Brilliantly simple fixes.
Thanks! But it’s not like it was hard to figure out.
I was going to buy this to replace my other precision sharpener. I won't now. I'm picky with my knife edges, so I'll go another route. Thanks
Hmm. Sounds like you clicked right through the fixes that get it to work much better.
I watched I'm just not interested in Jimmy rigging a couple hundred dollar knife sharpener. I'll save for a prof or something similar. Great videos keep up the fantastic work sir👍
Echoing a previous comment. If I had seen this before buying I would not have purchased. Thank you for the fixes
The thing to remember: there are no perfect machines.
An excellent review sir. I do sharpening for a business. I had added the WS Precision Adjust to my line up today and I appreciate the quality content and attention to detail. Thank you, for making of the video.
Thanks for watching! What other tools do you use?
Nice-I'm making the upgrades!
Awesome video! Smart thinkin'.
Glad you think so! Hence the Rx in the channel name, as in prescription ⚕️
Phenomenal upgrade improvements!!! Thanks for posting. 👏👏

Bought the bushings thanks
Great! Happy sharpenings!
Thank you for the useful video. I may end up getting one of these since you use it with your massive collection.
What a terrific, helpful review. Thanks so much. I am ordering the sharpener, and a set of bronze bushings. today.

Refreshing! Excellent review!
Thanks!
I have just the precision one and a reusable zip fixes so perfectly the the wobbely adjustment!
Are you talking about the small WSPA? I will try that.
Excellent! Thank you for your contributions!

Can you show us some tips to upgrade the fishing boat version?
Wow such a beautiful edge on that beauty😊
Thank You Sir. Very informative.

Thank you so much!
You are welcome!
I love this video. Didn't make the before new year deadline, but I made the party. 😂
Such an informative video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I wonder if they will quite update the model in the future. good job
Thank you for the great tips
I made a completely new center from a piece of aluminum and pressed a bronze sleeve on one side and a threaded sleeve on the other, I just need to figure something out with the lower plastic. With such a second sharpener, all these elements should be stiff and made of metal with bronze bushings or abrasion-resistant Teflon bushings.
Very interesting! Send me some pictures, email is in the channel description
@@RobX86 Totally go for it then! Glad I could help
Fantastic video brother, good info
I think the slightly cheaper version is an awesome sharpener. I have been very happy with mine because I was unable to sharpen knives until I got it.
Great tips..!! Thank you so much ..
THANK YOU
Glad you like it!
Great job! Really appreciated the info!

A few things to consider:
The task does not require much more than the weight of the arm and the abrasive, and the combination of your complaints about flexing and the wear on those two bushings implies the use of more force than is necessary.
your questions are very good, I am currently working on a video that will hopefully answer some of them! Stay tuned!
Following up on this, you showed the rotational movement on the clamp when it not in the down position supported by the base bridge. Would assume the bridge serves to eliminate/reduce any such clamp movement. If not, you should show that flex while in the intended, down position.
