For those wondering: This song uses a sample of two different old timey ones - Washboard Rhythm Kings - Pepper Steak (presumably the namesake) from 0:00 to 0:08 - King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band - Just Gone from 0:09 to 0:27 both are constantly cut and stripped apart. song's roughly around 114 bpm, with the samples themselves pitched down. the drums and other shenanigans were Coldwood's.
I love listening to this track because of the way it represents the batter's mental state. it a song that keeps going back and forth with : - the distorted/almost broken sounding saxophone & sampled wood/metal bats constantly hitting, sometime sounding like bells (like if time is running out), displaying a single focus that's flawed yet persistent; - the foreboding circus-like laughing clarinet, displaying some sort of mania within them, ironic considering these are the moments they're the most energetic. the way the song loop over and over again yet have a broken fadeout illustrates that the batter won't stop until they fall down.
You know, I find it interesting how many characters have a different explanation for the spectres' origin. Japhet claims the Queen has sent him spectres to punish his people, which the Judge finds a bizarre claim, since apparently, only the Queen has power over them. Even weirder, an elsen in Zone 1 points out that the queen *doesn't* hire spectres... Hmm... Enoch simply states that, as expected from ghosts, they are what remains of the dead. Oddly, Dedan seems to be the only guardian with no idea about what the spectres are, other than that they're a threat to his zone, and if I remember correctly, he accused the Batter of bringing them? What I wanna know is, are any of them right? If Enoch is right, are the spectres pursuing elsen to satisfy their sugar craving, or revenge for cannibalism? Or could they be the souls of those who came before Hugo's world? If Japhet and the Judge are right, could spectres be like evil add-ons, only carrying out violent tasks for the Queen (and maybe her guardians)? If Dedan is right, were the spectres created by the Batter so he can justify his mission? We may never know. Perhaps they were just created to give the Batter (and players) something to kill.
Some spectres can also be found in The Room, namely the Abstract, Horned, and Obese variety. But what does that indicate? Is it that Hugo's creating those spectres and sending them to motivate his creation and father figure to come end his miserable existence, and sickness? (Oh, and the Secretaries give out a lot of experience yet are _not_ spectres; instead they're demonical, humanoid spirits. Perhaps killing a good number of those helps alleviate the Batter's fear of facing his creator.)
There are posters in Zone 3 talking about how spectres are harmless, and what we saw with the elsen and the three spectres in that one room, I’d imagine Enoch is trying to discourage the elsen from doing anything about the spectres which may lead to death more often and have more bodies for sugar.

It seems that every game that I end up loving succeeds in drawing me in with a single, absurdly catchy track. For Undertale, it was Metal Crusher; for OFF, it was Pepper Steak. There's just something about tracks like this that have some sort of magnetic pull to them; once I hear them, I just can't avoid playing the game that they're from. And I'm pretty damn thankful for that, as I've discovered so many amazing games that way.

It's been almost a decade since I played this game, but learning that everything we now eat contains microplastic made me think of OFF. I'm sure it wasn't meant to be any sort of commentary, just weird or quirky to think about, but the plastic world is now our grim reality. From the plastic rain to the plastic meat they eat.
this song is almost like a duet, with the Spectre going "doodooodoodooodoodoo" and the heavy industrial beat being the Batter whacking the shit out of it
Somehow didn't notice this until now but listen to the very very end of this track..... the way that it slows down is creepy as hell. I thought for sure I had listened to the whole thing before.
YES, GOD, OFF HAS SO MANY TRACKS THAT JUST SOUND LIKE TRAINS- But, honestly, I hear more of a fadeout from the epic heat of the Batter's battle with spectres to him just continuously beating an Elsen, or a Guardian, or some other character to death. Like, the repeat of the "chorus" at the end, without the drummy sounds is a bunch of quick cuts between the Batter delivering his blows to the spectres, and then it slowly fades to him attacking someone off-screen, but we see more blood, and less colour of the zones, and his movements get slower, more automated, as he just slams his bat against a long dead person. Freaky visual.
randomly stumbled into this song through the glory and majesty of the algorithm a few weeks ago and decided to give the game a shot today so far I've only reached alma in zone 1, but this game goes hard. Love how no-nonsense the batter is compared to a typical rpg hero, and the weird cooldown turn system makes it bearable to fight enemies and is of course aided by the wonderful battle track will update with a proper review when I beat the game
I've had this song stuck in my head on loop for the entire morning. I haven't played this game. I haven't watched the whole game. I don't even like this game. But I'm familiar enough with it that it now won't leave my head. Props for making a battle theme sound as unhinged as having it stuck in your head makes you feel.
I love this song because the rest of the music in this game is so different and has a more calming tone, and then you get this. And its such an energetic and fun song.

One thing i like about this soundtrack is the fact that the layers of detail in it are noticeable if you pay close attention to it, & then u can never unimagine it from the ost. For example, the constant metal bat that's used starting from 00:25 has what i can only describe as the sound effect of a whomp from Mario in the background whenever it's used, very clever & overall just really neat.
I always thought this song was called peper *streak* and I just now figured out that it was peper *steak* all along and now I'm rethinking my entire life
This is quite the interesting song, and I'm actually transcribing it both as an arrangement and as a sliced up swing mix (like Coldwood did to create this). I do have a dilemma that I would really appreciate some help with; in the original swing song by the Washboard Rhythm Kings (titled the same as the OFF version), it contains both the "laugh" and other odd sounds that are in the drop and very beginning, but the main loop at 0:09 with what sounds like a Soprano Saxophone/Clarinet/duet of the two is nowhere to be found in the WRK version! I've reversed it, changed the pitch/speed/tempo up and down, and done so much more to no avail. This leads me to believe there was another song that was used in addition to the WRK's Pepper Steak. If anyone knows the other song used here, please let me know. Thanks! :) Oh, and I would like to add that I _would_ just take it from the song itself, but the drums that Coldwood put on top of it (the kick and hat) kind of prohibits re-sampling it.
Now that Sans has a Mii costume with a new remix in Ultimate... Consider the following with The Batter as a Mii swordfighter costume and a remix/medley of this game.
OOOOOOH, also The Batter can be not a Mii skin, I was thinking about being a playable character with the Add-ons included, and the Smash can be a Competence movement [It can be by choice or have it predetermined] Also your idea sound so good, I probably waste all my money and time in that Mii skin.
It says a lot that I have listened to like 15 mixes of this song and literally none of them are better than the original. Is this what peak looks like?
This is very catchy, and very different from normal RPG battle music, which always keeps the battle feeling epic. This? It's weird, instruments are all over the place, it fits the battles very well, I love it

I think thats because the switch is labeled with capitalized words
ON is capital too.
the folder name has it capital
It's been almost a decade since I played this game, but learning that everything we now eat contains microplastic made me think of OFF. I'm sure it wasn't meant to be any sort of commentary, just weird or quirky to think about, but the plastic world is now our grim reality. From the plastic rain to the plastic meat they eat.
And now including the nanoplastics in our water :)
this song is almost like a duet, with the Spectre going "doodooodoodooodoodoo" and the heavy industrial beat being the Batter whacking the shit out of it
Somehow didn't notice this until now but listen to the very very end of this track..... the way that it slows down is creepy as hell. I thought for sure I had listened to the whole thing before.

Never knew that this track owned that slow ending. Sounds like an average game-over song that dies slowly, just like a train stopping the movement.
YES, GOD, OFF HAS SO MANY TRACKS THAT JUST SOUND LIKE TRAINS-
But, honestly, I hear more of a fadeout from the epic heat of the Batter's battle with spectres to him just continuously beating an Elsen, or a Guardian, or some other character to death.
15 years since OFF and this is still a banger
I heard that the Napstablook theme was inspired from this song. That's pretty neat honestly. Crazy how influential this game is to a lot of Indie RPGs
i will always come back here and listen to this wonderful piece.
yes, i was right.
I had discovered this game 3 days ago and it’s brilliant with it’s story and soundtracks! Approaching to this song really changed things for me!
What de *fok* was this doing in the hotline miami OST playlist.
To good to not be.
I mean, if you got introduced to OFF this way, the guy that made the playlist ain't making mistakes
Idk. What are YOU doing in the hotline Miami OST playlist?
danganronpa got me here
@@milkonokemono what
I mean, I know about Danganronpa, but what
0:03 i like that for a split second it went full silent
the game may not hold its quality for today standards, but my god the sound track aged like fine wine.
randomly stumbled into this song through the glory and majesty of the algorithm a few weeks ago and decided to give the game a shot today
so far I've only reached alma in zone 1, but this game goes hard. Love how no-nonsense the batter is compared to a typical rpg hero, and the weird cooldown turn system makes it bearable to fight enemies and is of course aided by the wonderful battle track
will update with a proper review when I beat the game
Really makes you wanna go 'purify' a rotund man in a white suit and an evil bird-cat hybrid.
Yep it also makes me want to 'purify' a small child
You know what? All normal battles in all turn-based rpgs should have funky drum and bass tracks like this
I'm upset that I only found out recently that this song was made almost purely of samples from a song that goes by the same name.
I know this game came out like 6 years
But I came back for nostalgia and god this game was so good
11 years ago actually ahah.

Fiction takes a hold of reality...
Someone should purify these undertale comments.
That would be appreciated if someone had the balls to actually do it.
i will
bro strider thank you friend
What? Where?

Elsen waiter: Here is yuor peper stank w/ no specters as you requested, Batter.
Batter: thnk u. I sure do love stank.
Specter: did som1 say... NO SPECTERS????? * jumps onto steak *
Batter: I TASTE A SPECTER. P U R I F Y
Someone Can I please use this in my daily vocabulary but I N I B B A instead
"i taste a specter" bruh i'm dead XD
Just imagine a guy, in a full baseball uniform, smashing a steak with a baseball bat, and then a ghost flies out of it.

What a nice quaint meme man reference with vegetal

The end sounds so sad, like a spectre slowly dying.

Literally only played OFF long enough to get past the tutorial and kill some Spectres, and I already love it.
Edit: Its my favorite RPG Maker game. I beat it last year with my buddy Corey teaching me the puzzles I was too dumb to figure out. It was an unforgettable experience that I wish I could relieve
Some of those beats sounds like when someone hits a home run. When the batter hits the ball insanely hard lol nice

Omg
It’s the right balance of whimsical and spooky
“How do I get rid of monsters?”

I feel like this game only spreads through word of mouth nowadays

Calm down, it's not a genocide run.

i don’t know what the hell a scribbal is please i just wanna listen to peper steak
this was used in a popular roblox game, and now everyone is referring to this as "the one song used in scriball", tis pretty stupid because this song was a banger on its own
The begininng is jamming
How can you not love this song
Reasons why you came here
1. You play OFF and this is a BOP! ( I never have played it but I agree)
2. You haven't heard this game and just looking for music to listen to.
3. Your a Rex fan and not like the people like (Fiction takes hold of reality... they are annoying no hate but just don't post those comments like WE GET IT IT'S SCRIBBAL!) that loves the games music and I'm one of those people especially
4. idk but hopefully you enjoyed this comment about me showing you why you probably came here

Mortis is actually making another game, I hope he collabs with alias again
@@CerealKiller it's quite in very early development so it's kinda hard to say. It is said to be metroid like, and it has no connections to off unfortunately. He predicted it would take about 2 years.
The reason it slows down at the end is to be like a vinyl record slowly coming to a halt
Other, more cultured people: I love this song because [analysis of the characters/beats/what it represents]
Me: I love that pathetic little trumpet sound
One thing i like about this soundtrack is the fact that the layers of detail in it are noticeable if you pay close attention to it, & then u can never unimagine it from the ost. For example, the constant metal bat that's used starting from 00:25 has what i can only describe as the sound effect of a whomp from Mario in the background whenever it's used, very clever & overall just really neat.
I always thought this song was called peper *streak* and I just now figured out that it was peper *steak* all along and now I'm rethinking my entire life
I don't think you should drink red bull before listening to this.
This song gaves me chill when fighting,i love this song.
but all of OFF's songs are really great.
they threw dummy! into a washing machine
Thanks! :)
Oh, and I would like to add that I _would_ just take it from the song itself, but the drums that Coldwood put on top of it (the kick and hat) kind of prohibits re-sampling it.
Parkman202 Coldwood may have added that in himself.
Gladly. If you want help on recreating the song, check my channel; I have a few different Pepper Steak transcriptions that should help you.
Not a problem! Good luck to your recreation!
In that case, I can't really help you with that since I have yet to find all of the original samples.
I thought it was weird that I couldn't find the loop in the original. Huh.
Now that Sans has a Mii costume with a new remix in Ultimate...
Consider the following with The Batter as a Mii swordfighter costume and a remix/medley of this game.
I would love that
oh my God, Sans was A YEAR AGO???
OOOOOOH, also The Batter can be not a Mii skin, I was thinking about being a playable character with the Add-ons included, and the Smash can be a Competence movement [It can be by choice or have it predetermined]
Also your idea sound so good, I probably waste all my money and time in that Mii skin.
I remember listening to this music the first time and being like "ugh..." but now I freaking love it
imagine ur in ur rexr priv server and u hear a loud noise and then hear this.
Fiction takes hold of reality...
It says a lot that I have listened to like 15 mixes of this song and literally none of them are better than the original. Is this what peak looks like?
This is very catchy, and very different from normal RPG battle music, which always keeps the battle feeling epic. This? It's weird, instruments are all over the place, it fits the battles very well, I love it
this song is crunchy
and kinda soft like a sandwich thats been toasted
Love this battle theme! It's like a French swing music
