Despite what Japhet did to Valerie and the Elsens I can't help but feel sorry for the guy. He just cracked under the pressure and felt betrayed which led him to go insane. At least in his last moments alive he acknowledged that what he did was wrong. Xiao Andy said that the queens boss battle was the saddest one. I disagree with that. I believe that this is perhaps the saddest one mainly because you're fighting someone who isn't in their right mind, a broken person. Seeing him realize his mistakes just before dying is what made it sadder than the queens or in my opinion it is
Each boss encounter in this game was fun and unique, but Japhet REALLY stuck out to me. A once loving ruler of his Zone, he went mad when he realized he conditioned his subjects to living under protective care to the point where they felt nothing but fear. He knew his madness and actions after would cost him his life and he was willing to accept that, but not without showing his executioner one last horror before he died.
I really liked the build up to this fight. You walk up the library, slowly learning the details of his backstory. Then when you face him, he morphs out of his host to reveal his powerful true form. The build up is great.

The difference between Undertale and OFF Undertale is nice, heartwarming, and if you play it right for the "Good" ending, which starts at the beginning of the game, everyone but one person is happy OFF is nice, but is less heart warming, and if you play it right for the "Good" ending, which is at the end of the game, one person is happy, because the rest are probably dead (Although Zacharie might still be alive, or maybe that one elsen)
+Jacob Swihart compering these games is very thought , there carry very different message. And they use different method to deliver their message. This game is about choice. in contrast in off there is no "good" ending, game suppose to be dark, its MUCH more deeper than undertale. Its message is about cruelty, unnecessary violence and unfairness of the life.It wasn't meant to be "heart warming "
+Jacob Swihart yeah i love both games, but undertale is more for the lovable characters and cute story, OFF is for the awesome story and ZACHARIEEEEEEEEE XD and the other characters of course XD
Japhet was the most interesting to me. He made sure his zone was going fine. However, none of the Elsen knew of his existence. He was in a fit of rage at that point. And deliberately killed any Elsen that pissed him off. But he knew of this and wanted the sweet relief of death. My guess as to why he fought Batter at that point is possibly due to his rage, even after he confesses to sinning and wanting death...
I'm so glad they kept this in the spinoff fangame HOME, there it sounded truly heroic as Judge, Valerie, Alain, and Jozlyn knock sense into Japhet and warn him of Batter, while also helping Valerie atone for his accidental misdeeds whilst under the control of the Millennial Fire Bird.
Japhet would really have been better off alive. His zone needed him dearly. It disappeared mostly because he was ready to die. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't good either. His death was not completely justified.
So like a week ago I was playing this game for the first time, and I didn’t really like the combat system so most of the time I fled from enemies , so I wasn’t leveled up as much as others would be by the time I got to Dedan and Japhet. I had several deaths to Japhet and then once both the Batter and one of the addons were dead, and the last one was at 1 hp and poisoned. I was like “it would be funny is this hit killed Japhet” and then it somehow did
I’m up too late and this piece makes me feel things so here, take nonsense. Once you thought you could be free to sing. You fought to break this shell that your people had formed around you, putting their ruler, their protector, into a box. You gave them things, but you wished to give them more. You wanted to give them happiness, smiles on their faces…but they wouldn’t smile. Now you fight against the weak, soft vessel coating your feathers in bile. Madness. Vulnerability. You had only one job you needed to accomplish. And you failed. Who cares for this shell? For this thing intent on consuming you? Blood pours off the coat of oil you wear, stretching, squeezing, tearing holes so you can breathe…but there is no air. There is only smoke. There is only the world you failed, and the man who understands neither you, nor it. Just as you do not understand the creature you have just flayed alive…it was no shell that you broke. The two bloods mingle upon the foundation of all you wasted your time building. You know now that you never could have sung.
Japhet was always my favorite Guardian. Everytime I listened to this, I kept imagening a jungle with ropes on the trees and... keys hanging onto them? I guess because of the sounds in the theme.
Japhet understood that this life could never be sustainable. Unlike everyone else, he knew that time would catch up and make him pay for his sins. He didn’t reject it like dedan or hide from it like Enoch.
I absolutely adore the "Carnival Merry Go Round" sound replaying in the background of this song. It makes me think of who Japhet was before he went insane. Trying everything he can to make the Elsen happy and safe, like a carnival to a child.
It would be great if I could locate more music that sounded like the OFF ost. Besides fan games and generally silent hill for some of that feel, I can't find anything else. Anyone got anything they can recommend?
A guy said that the soundtrack that plays when fighting Delirium in the Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ sounded like Minuit a fond la caisse. Maybe try checking it out?
Agreed. He just wanted the best for his people, but they all turned against him. Then he had to deal with all of the guilt that came after he set the spectres on everyone. All he wanted was a safe, peaceful world. And it was destroyed right before him.
Man, listening to these uploads has really given me more appreciation for all the work put into the ost. So many great parts were cut out, it's criminal I say...
Guys, your translators are whacked out. "Minuit" is definitely midnight. "À fond la caisse" translates to "at full speed". It can also mean things like "at maximum velocity" and "at full blast". It sounds much more dramatic that way, so I'm assuming that's the right way to translate it.
+IntergalacticAngel Don't get me wrong, it's definitely vague, but I think there is a meaning to be drawn from it. Midnight--nighttime in general, really, but specifically midnight--is a time often associated with evil. Therefore, mayhap this song is Mortis Ghost's indirect way of saying Japhet is evil in its fullest form (at full speed); he committed one of the seven deadly sins against a world he created--Wrath against his own creations. I've heard some interpretations of OFF that say the Batter did some bad things, but was justified in some sense. I haven't heard one defense of Japhet; therefore, it would make sense that he is seen as evil at its maximum potential. Ergo, "Midnight at full speed"
This is without doubts one of the BEST off tracks. The bird noises as an instrument is not only heavenly but it was a real creative choice for Japhet. Amazing song.
At first, when I pulled up this song in the soundtrack, I thought it sounded weirdly like random noise, which wasn't what I remembered. Then I realized that I accidentally had the playback speed cranked up to 1.75x.
i love how japhet is a firebird, as they are both a blessing AND a a curse. idk if it was intentional, but it’s really cool to think about, as japhet blessed the elsen with this land, but then bought specters upon them
Personally, I don't believe Japhet isn't pure evil, but he's not completely a victim either. He's the archetype known as "Well-Intentioned Extremist". If he had simply intimidated his followers and got them to listen with his phoenix form, then he may have turned out alright. But his head wasn't on straight and we got the Japhet we see.
Idk about others, but this song sounds very dreamy to me, like the starting and the middle part of this song are just a dream where you are a super hero or an adventurer, where you are happy or at least satisfied, where you fight cartoonish villans and are the right hand of justice, but then at 3:03 in the song you wake up instantly, interrupted in your hero dream adventure by an alarm clock, still half dreaming half being awake (the buzzing noise). Its 6am on monday, birds are singing and you have to go to work or school only to dream of dreaming and sleeping yet again.
I have two reasons for why Japhet is the easiest boss. One, his battle theme is not extremely tense, two, he doesn't look very menacing. Dedan had those lanky sharp fingers and a pretty terrifying appearance, Enoch is towering and looks like he's not afraid to murder anything in his sight, and Japhet is just a derpy bird with a cat on his head.
Also, I really think that piano solo at the end of this, if it were longer and cleaned up, it should play after you kill Japhet, while The Batter is talking about how the zone has been purified.
The ending part makes me think of Hugo being awoken by an alarm clock or so after dreaming about something (maybe the Batter's & Japhet's battle?) & looking outside a window to see the sun rising with the sounds of birds chirping (Maybe it's a sign of Japhet's demise?).
I don't know why, but Valerie must be the most forgettable thing in OFF, by far. This surprises me, because it's the most emotional boss, besides Vader.
Japhet's story is one of the most depressing in the game. He created a utopia for his people but lost his mind when the same people he created a world for turned against him. It's got that Old Testament vengeful god feeling to it.

Haha, I think it's a glitch with RPG maker, where it doesn't loop songs properly. Not intentional by Mortis Ghost as far as I know
I feel bad for Japhet. He just cracked under the stress, and his people turned on him.
Dedan didn't care at all, Japhet cared too much, and Enoch was just a terrible creature.
Dedan stopped caring, Japhet did too much, and Enoch didn't at all, I would say.
he scream @ his own ghost EXACLY DUDE
@@corvidaesapiens
Agreed. Dedan seemed like he really did want to protect his Zone, he just eventually started doing it in a cruel way.
Dammit e n o c c
Enoch is blind on situation in Z3
I pray for those bongo player’s hands
just imagine that the Scout from TF2 is the one playing and now you don't have to feel bad
not because Scout is a bad person, but because he is fucking amazing at playing the bongos
@@Mate_Antal_Zoltan couldnt be, Scout is already fighting a giant bird along with 2 hola hoops
One of my personal favourite tracks and heart wrenching events in the game.
The sadness of Paublo GETS ME, man... every time...
The difference between Undertale and OFF
Undertale is nice, heartwarming, and if you play it right for the "Good" ending, which starts at the beginning of the game, everyone but one person is happy
OFF is nice, but is less heart warming, and if you play it right for the "Good" ending, which is at the end of the game, one person is happy, because the rest are probably dead (Although Zacharie might still be alive, or maybe that one elsen)
+Jacob Swihart compering these games is very thought , there carry very different message. And they use different method to deliver their message. Undertake mercy or fight feature is just a tools to deliver message. This game is about choice.
in contrast in off there is no "good" ending, game suppose to be dark, its MUCH more deeper than undertale. Its message is about cruelty, unnecessary violence and unfairness of the life.It wasn't meant to be "heart warming "
+Jacob Swihart yeah i love both games, but undertale is more for the lovable characters and cute story, OFF is for the awesome story and ZACHARIEEEEEEEEE XD
and the other characters of course XD
Yes it does, stop ranting. It's a very good game.
+The Cool Rapper Dude, I see you everywhere, and your ALWAYS talking about how 'bad' Undertale is.
+Internet Trash (That one kid.) undertale is cool, and so do off, but they are too diferent from each other to compare
This is heart wreching
Japhet was the most interesting to me. He made sure his zone was going fine. However, none of the Elsen knew of his existence. He was in a fit of rage at that point. And deliberately killed any Elsen that pissed him off. But he knew of this and wanted the sweet relief of death. My guess as to why he fought Batter at that point is possibly due to his rage, even after he confesses to sinning and wanting death...
I'm french and for those who Wonder minuit à fond la caisse means somethin' like "midnight at full speed" or " midnight goin' all out"
Man, seeing the sprite progress of Japhet emerging from his dead cat host is...horrifying, an image that will NEVER leave me.
I love it. Favorite character design in the game , Vader Eloha is a close second
The ending is so good! After the intensity there comes a screeching halt and a peaceful sendoff
this has to be one of the most evocative songs I've ever heard
I'm so glad they kept this in the spinoff fangame HOME, there it sounded truly heroic as Judge, Valerie, Alain, and Jozlyn knock sense into Japhet and warn him of Batter, while also helping Valerie atone for his accidental misdeeds whilst under the control of the Millennial Fire Bird.
Japhet would really have been better off alive. His zone needed him dearly. It disappeared mostly because he was ready to die.
He wasn't bad, but he wasn't good either. His death was not completely justified.
@TIBdOBiNSON MCgLOBiNSON Ah. That makes sense.
Didn't Japhet want to die? One of the books in Zone 2 explains that he's awaiting the Batter because he can't handle the weight of his sins.
Did anyone else imagine a sunny day with a storm coming in when you heard this?
I'm imagining a forest with crystals at a starry night
Japhet understood that this life could never be sustainable. Unlike everyone else, he knew that time would catch up and make him pay for his sins. He didn’t reject it like dedan or hide from it like Enoch.
I absolutely adore the "Carnival Merry Go Round" sound replaying in the background of this song.
It makes me think of who Japhet was before he went insane.
Trying everything he can to make the Elsen happy and safe, like a carnival to a child.
Japhet is some kind of majestic phoenix right? At least he used to be...
Lulink yeah
Lulink Used to, before he went insane.
Now he just vores cats.
Furied Angel It's in reverse, he got devoured by a cat, and as an act of revenge, he possessed the poor thing.
A majestic phoenix gone mad.
It would be great if I could locate more music that sounded like the OFF ost. Besides fan games and generally silent hill for some of that feel, I can't find anything else. Anyone got anything they can recommend?
Vic Cole Well, try listening to the LISA The Painful ost.
A guy said that the soundtrack that plays when fighting Delirium in the Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ sounded like Minuit a fond la caisse. Maybe try checking it out?
There is a single OFF-esque song on Homestucks soundtrack "Three's a crowd"
listen to alias's other stuff
Try Venetian Snares's album Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett and most of Plaid's music.
Tbh i quite like Japhet
Sombra his name is so cool
Same here
Agreed. He just wanted the best for his people, but they all turned against him. Then he had to deal with all of the guilt that came after he set the spectres on everyone. All he wanted was a safe, peaceful world. And it was destroyed right before him.
Lyudmila Pavlichenko He is my favorite character, right next to Judge.
I don't like him, personally, but, I respect that, I can see why you would.
Man, listening to these uploads has really given me more appreciation for all the work put into the ost. So many great parts were cut out, it's criminal I say...
this dude NEEDS to make more music
He may be? He left the internet in 2021 but still has some other music on his site. Like some albums and stuff
Whatever those gamelan-esque instruments are, they're really nice.
i was thinking they sounded gamelan-y!
The end of this freaking killed me.. it's so sad..
Guys, your translators are whacked out.
"Minuit" is definitely midnight. "À fond la caisse" translates to "at full speed". It can also mean things like "at maximum velocity" and "at full blast". It sounds much more dramatic that way, so I'm assuming that's the right way to translate it.
GOTTA GO FAST
+Robin Maier (Clay) AT FULL BLAST
BLAST PROCESSING
midnight at full velocity? what's that gotta do with Firebirds and dead cat bros
+IntergalacticAngel
Don't get me wrong, it's definitely vague, but I think there is a meaning to be drawn from it.
This would be the best rap beat ever.
du hast
Li’l parasite on the beat
cherp cherp cherp
This is without doubts one of the BEST off tracks. The bird noises as an instrument is not only heavenly but it was a real creative choice for Japhet. Amazing song.
At first, when I pulled up this song in the soundtrack, I thought it sounded weirdly like random noise, which wasn't what I remembered.
Then I realized that I accidentally had the playback speed cranked up to 1.75x.
Hehehe.
i love how japhet is a firebird, as they are both a blessing AND a a curse.
idk if it was intentional, but it’s really cool to think about, as japhet blessed the elsen with this land, but then bought specters upon them
Aww every off boss is good and bad in its own way, Japhet just cared about his elsen so much that led to anxiety and fear
Lmao dude idk who else would have a theme like this except a bird
what does this mean
This one is like... Cute but INTENSE AS FUCK
and that part at 1:56 IS THE REAL SHIT
I'm french and this title goes perfectly with the song
Also it means "Midnight at high speed"
AVENGE VALERIE FOR PABLO!
HELL YES.
Black Coffee Cat "whatever"
Poor Valerie
Japhet’s design is nice ngl
Truly an underrated masterpiece
the birbs got cut off, let them cook for at least more than 15 seconds :(((
It astounds ,e how these guys can start with just sounds, and make an entire song out of them. They have talent.
The phoenix who didn't rise back from the ashes
This entire song is great, but that ending really makes me get the feels..
japhets theme is a banger. fittin for the best guardian :))
It sounds strange, primal and panicked.
I came up with lyrics for the ending bit 3:08
"Is this really my fate?
I am not a god or saint,
Filled with hate,
from what I create..."
He admits what he did was wrong and is prepared for his punishment, but he is not going down without a fight.
Translation: "Midnight at High Speed", according to Google Translate.

This sounds like it could play in The Last Airbender
Those bongos got me breaking it down like crazy why is it so fire
the title translation is midnight in the speed of light
These drums go hard
I have two reasons for why Japhet is the easiest boss. One, his battle theme is not extremely tense, two, he doesn't look very menacing. Dedan had those lanky sharp fingers and a pretty terrifying appearance, Enoch is towering and looks like he's not afraid to murder anything in his sight, and Japhet is just a derpy bird with a cat on his head.
Also, I really think that piano solo at the end of this, if it were longer and cleaned up, it should play after you kill Japhet, while The Batter is talking about how the zone has been purified.
Ninten45 Well he is about as tall as a fucking house though
Don't forget the fact he literally took over Valerie's life from the inside of him and then emerged as a giant bird with horse legs
Uh...none of those translate to how easy the boss is. Those factor in how INTIMIDATING he is.
. . . that has blood on his neck and face.
Where is the kirby pfp person who writes the nice comments?
I miss them
@Alex Kalinin where did they post comments? I'm just curious
i love the instruments so much !! gamelan !!
I got an AKIRA vibe from this track; some of the bells used are reminding me of the chimes from The AKIRA OST.
The ending part makes me think of Hugo being awoken by an alarm clock or so after dreaming about something (maybe the Batter's & Japhet's battle?) & looking outside a window to see the sun rising with the sounds of birds chirping (Maybe it's a sign of Japhet's demise?).
Zone 2's boss theme is really lit
3:03
oh good when i downloaded the track I thought it was corrupted out something
The fact i can read the title out loud fluently is a wonder-
This song hits harder than Fake Orchestra hot damn and I use Fake Orchestra as an alarm clock.

I love every song in this game, but this one especially
This sounds like it came from a Pikmin game.
when the pikmin finally snap and attack olimar

Agreed. It reminds me of that other butterfly guy in the cave...

Sounds a lot like the movie Akira.
***** More like Tetsuo's to me.
Thanks to u two i am obsessed with that movie now
It sounds like a hybrid of the two. It has the drums like Kaneda's and the music box like Tetsuo's
Midnight at High Speed is a good name for this.
Flying at midnight in full speed sounds like something a phoenix would do.
goddamn those gamelans man...
i like how this boss was the hardest and the final boss ended in 3 turns
Hardest for me was probably Sugar.
Can anyone explain why the bird sounds make me feel unsafe?
Valerie...
I don't know why, but Valerie must be the most forgettable thing in OFF, by far. This surprises me, because it's the most emotional boss, besides Vader.
Okay so for a moment I thought you meant _Darth_ Vader.
Batter: Hugo- *wheeze* I am your father
