After all that exertion!
I've never been so happy to finally release the first episode after 3 years of stop and go, it was just now or never. This has been a fun personal project and I know there are a lot of rooms for improvement. Many thanks to the wonderful VAs who took part and your support.
I really hope I can continue to episode 2, featuring Zone 1, more characters and crazy...animation. Lots of that. Hopefully, life would allow this.

Off is something very far in the past for me, but I'm really amazed by all the work you invested in the creation of this episode ! I'm really proud to have made a game that resonates with so much people, for such a long period of time. Thanks to you and to all the fandom !!

There's a part in Spanish at 9:26 (ish) that says "que quieren hacer mas que.... que... tu quieres" but I can't completely make it out. It means "what they want to do more than.. (something) ... you want". I think that one of the whispering voices is speaking in Spanish the whole time, but due to the overlap, I can't make out anything except this one part where everyone else goes quiet. Anybody have a guess as to the other parts?

I really like the unsettling aspect of the batter’s voice. It feels like, almost unnatural? Like it’s supposed to sound like a human, but it just...isn’t? It’s dope!

The animation is really incredible, absolutely top notch, but I'm really not a fan of the Batter's voice. It's barely understandable sometimes, and the fact that he says 'The Baiter' and not 'The Batter' is really unfortunate. The Judge was great though, big fan of him.
@Limon the batter is american though :,0 hes the only character that uses american spellings and hes based off an american sport.

I know a few people with "perfect" accents, pronouncing everything so precisely that it sounds strange. That's what I imagined the batter sounding like but this is honestly great too.
i honestly love the batter's voice acting? the mispronunciation of certain words and his tone makes it sound sort of like something mimicking human speech rather than someone just speaking which adds a sort of chill to it that i dont think would be there if he just had generic male protagonist voice (which i dont think would be right for a character like the batter anyway)

I find myself in agreement with you. Given my miniscule understanding of the story, it does seem exceptionally fitting given what The Batter is near the end of the game. I think he needs to work on the voice a bit so as to make it seem a tiny bit more obvious it's a mimicry but otherwise I really hope they stick this voice instead of changing it like the above pinned comment states.
Also I much prefer this depiction of the Judge as the game made it hard for me to get any real feel for the characters past a surface level analysis.
Animation is pretty good with excellent use of the OST and sound effects. Given how much content is in the other zones and Sugar. I wonder how the animator will continue from here.

I think the mispronunciation of the words and his voice are perfect for his character. His speech mistakes make him seem like he’s mimicking human speech, and his monotone voice is perfect for his “holy prophet” sorta character

Since everyone is talking about the voice acting bit, I'd like to discuss other parts of this.
I really liked how "quiet" some of your shots are. Lingering just a little bit on shots like them running and the zoomed out view of Zone 0 really helps set the seemingly solemn-ish tone of OFF. I like it a lot.
The lip syncing is also pretty good, and showing the Batter without a face a couple times does his character wonders.
I don't get why you pitch shifted the Fourteen Residents song, but it's fine.
The shot where the Batter whiffs and the judge hits him from behind to make him lose balance was a nice touch that will most likely help show how much the Batter will improve in combat over time.
The clean art for the backgrounds is dead on, though I sorta miss the sketchy look of the characters. It would be extremely difficult/time consuming to animate them that way, so I don't blame you for making the call of a cleaner look for them. A cool idea for later on is that during intense fights with certain enemies the art could get a little sketchy... But that's asking a lot from you. I don't want to push you harder when animation is already a brutal process.
Overall, I think you captured the essence of OFF adequately well, and I can't wait to see more in the future.
I think Fourteen Residents might be pitchshifted to avoid copyright.
I actually like Batter's voice. He sounds like he's both fitting of the world, and not. Like a newcomer or someone who hasn't been in a while. Plus, with the guidance of the player, he may not be used to talking on his 'own' anymore, so the player would 'help' if given the prompt. Either way, I like the voice. It's unusual at first, but the more I rewatch it the more it grows on me!

FarmHend it doesn’t sound “naturally” void of emotion or robotic, just sounds like someone trying too hard to reach that expectation. The VA needs to practice. I think his accent might be holding him back.

I'm kinda a fan of The Batter's strange voice acting? It really adds to the atmosphere of the character in my opinion and I think it fits very well given well, everything we know about him.
Also on a side note I sincerely hope you continue this project as I have quite the itch to see a purified zone rendered in your wonderful animation

And yes i like the Batter's voice. I think he should sound like inhuman creature with strange notes in his voice. You just KNOW that he isn't human (you know like Gman sounds? something like that). He is dangerous, i can feel he won't stop during his mission.

YOOOOOOOOO THIS IS SICK!!!!!! The animation is So Smooth it’s criminal, I love it so much!!! And the voice acting for the Judge is absolutely Perfect 10/10. The VA for the Batter could use a bit of practice but that’s ok!!!! His voice still fits him. I really love the perspective in some of the shots, really well done. Anyway, this is the best thing I’ve seen this week, this month, this year, thank you (and the VAs) So Much for putting this much work into it, we all really appreciate it!!! Also I really loved the small bonk sound when the bat hit the ground during the fight lmao that got me. This is seriously the best fan made animation I’ve ever seen for any fandom, it’s incredible. Keep up the great work my dude :))
I will say this episode looks great. The style of animation dose feel like it matches the game a bit, but a little more cleaner.
However, not to mention the Elephant in the room, but I think the weakest part of the animation is the voice acting. The Judge's voice actor did a fantastic Job, but the Batter's voice just feels weak. I'm sorry but I don't think their wasn't much effort put into the batter voice. Unless I'm missing something important, I think the batters voice is the weakest part of this animation.
Still with with my grips overt his, the animation was still good, and almost felt like I'm watching a small show.

Other comments have said that the batters voice actors native language is French, which means that he is truly putting a great deal of effort to speak in English for his character.
The Judge is good but fantastic is a bit of an exageration. At times his lines feel rushed and he slurrs his words occasionally

I think that everyone in the comments should give the Batters VA a chance. Seeing foreign pronunciation isn't common, and OFF is a foreign game anyways. Honestly, I'd love the whole series to be in French like the original game was made.
It's not "foreign" pronunciation, it's just wrong pronunciation. A few of the mistakes were laughable, especially the very first line. Besides the amateurish pronunciation, the quality and timbre of the voice is not suited for VA, the recording and processing is _way_ below speak-all-your-lines-into-your-phone quality, and the rhythm, inflection and general acting is just cringe-inducingly bad.
There are billions of non-native English speakers, but very few of them take on a VA role that they are in no way up for.

No one can get better without some form of understanding where their faults are; and being unwilling to accept that they are faults is only going to leave someone unchanged and un-self bettered. Anyways, I do think some of the harsh language used by clemens is less than constructive, but he does have a point regaurdless. Going "oh, any flaw is acceptable it's fine" is just as counter-productive and destructive as hostility and put-down attitudes.

While it's been said to death that The Batter's voice acting could use some work, I really think there is something to the Batter having a very dull, almost detached tone of voice. He strikes me as a very obtuse and awkward man who would rather use as few words as possible. So it would honestly make sense for his tone of voice to be stunted and retrained. My one gripe might be the pronunciation of some words? But even then, it doesn't really ruin anything all too much. I am excited to see how it develops once the next installment of this beautiful work gets released.
So fucking happy to see this iconic game get this level of dedicated attention. I am subbed and ready to see this story unfold :)
EDIT: Another small critique I have is the real lack of folly. Though I am well aware this is yet another headache when it comes to making media, small sound effects go a long way when it comes to making a world feel both real and believable. I really like the clever use of in game sound effects, and think if you added small stuff like footsteps and the sounds of objects moving/swinging/ect, it would really help make this project feel even more polished. I am super hype to see more! I really hope the algorithm picks this up and brings OFF back into the public's attention.

@@PedroShadow2011 I will admit you are right there, he does talk quite a bit in the game. The voice they chose for this I feel is just a bit off, I almost expected it to sound more dead and cold. They do a great job don't get me wrong, just not quite what I was expecting from the Batter. Though maybe they are doing this on purpose, and as the series goes on and get farther into the game the Batter will become more cold sounding. But eh what do I know.

like there isnt too much motion with the characters, it needs a little bit more background detail (like inside the building in zone 0)

I hope you continue with this, like I can see how much care you put into it and how much work there is, but I’ve never seen anyone do such an awesome vid for OFF! It’s just so fucking good I wanna see the other lands and the bosses in this style
I really do appreciate this animation a lot, there are areas that it would be improved on such as the fact that I dont like how the red cube was on screen for so long it felt like filler I guess. I think judges voice actor is really good however I really am not liking the batters voice actor. Something that bothers me the most is how he pronounced it as "baiter." Why wasnt this corrected in the voice acting? The accent I apologize but is mostly difficult to understand. Regardless of critique I think this is really amazing because its very very rare to even have decent animation adaptation to videos such as this in the first place. I hope things are improved in the future! Its still a great animation in most areas

I'm so happy that this is finally out! The animation's fantastic- though, I think Sɨssel's voice would be much better suited to a French dub, his accent is just too strong for an English voice for the batter, it sounds unnatural and awkward (not to sound mean, I know everyone's doing their best and speaking other languages is hard!).
The lack of attention this video is getting doesn't and probably never will justify the massive amount effort put in. Popular criticisms apply, but an amazing animation of a great game

Coming back to it, this was amazing. I loved the visuals, the voice acting (though the Batter sounded a bit weird to me; I always thought of his voice as deeper than that.). You're doing great, I can't wait for episode 2!

I had no idea what this was coming into this, my eye was caught by the thumbnail and I was entranced.
This feels like something made by Studio Ghibli, especially when he enters the nothingness. All the voices fit really well with the characters and I am really excited to see more.

The animation is great, however Batters voice could use a lot of work, it's clear English isn't their native language since they mispronounced the word batter as well. Very excited to see how this goes.
