I am looking forward to your sensible, measured response to the new M2 Mac minis when they come out. I need to replace my maxed-out 2012 i7 Mac mini, but the mixed quality of the current M2 releases has me wondering. I made a good choice with that one. It has been a real workhorse. 24GB + 1TB M2 for me (already ordered), coming from a M1 MacBook Air with 16GB + 1TB (±600GB utilised). The M1 will become my spare computer. I use my MacBook for professional software development and quite often run out of Memory caused by my dev-tool setup + multiple Docker containers running my code. This setup ranges from 15-18GB and other then claimed by most UA-camrs, once the computer starts to utilise the disk, debugging/testing becomes a pain; what takes 1 minute in pure RAM becomes 20 Minutes and more when the RAM and disk is utilised - so for my use cace, having 20+GB is a must.
I also tested an M1 Pro with 32 GB for a week, but, despite the RAM, this machine doesn't provide much, if any value to me over my M1 MacBook Air. I would not consider or buy it at all. The silence and form-factor of the Macbook Air are unbeatable and it also perfectly works perfectly with my 5k/2k monitor all my other stuff. I very rarely use my MacBook as a Laptop, and if, portability is most important to.
Why to buy a 'Lamborghini Aventador' if an 'entry-level Porsche 911' does the job? ;-)

Same boat - wanted a personal machine but still able to handle some dev workload. Tried both 14 and 16 mbpro, love the new design but hated the bulk. This MacBook Air redesign is just what I’m looking for. Second preorder dropped - spec 24gb ram and 1 TB storage. Mobile emulators and chrome tabs gobble up memory like mints

I chose 24GB since I use a lot of sample libraries in Logic Pro which chews up RAM quickly. More RAM equals less paging to SSD (longevity), more samples and tracks in Logic, ability to run multiple virtual machines in Parallels for development, better resale value and future-proofed. Also opted for the 512GB SSD to avoid the single NAND issue since I can always expand storage using external SSDS (which is better to reduce single point of failure for data). All in all, 24GB made sense to me.

Hi Mark. I've watched the video and am typing this on an 2020 Intel i5 Mac Book Air with 8 Gb of RAM. It is a lovely machine and for 'normal' users it is still good enough for what they and I need to do and the ergonomics are super.
I'm going to be a bit of scratched record here and say that for editing huge files in Light Room or Photoshop the lack of RAM is the weakness. I have a 21 inch iMac on my desk with 16Gb and that slows to treacle at times.
I find myself in a bit of a quandary as I have two machines, neither of which is entirely satisfactory for some of the tasks I throw them and want and need at least one machine that will last the next five years without breaking sweat.
I'd add for that most users the old adage that one can never be 'to thin or to rich' comes to mind and with the terrific longevity of Mac hardware and the ongoing support getting more RAM is the best way of keeping a machine going for many years. One can compensate for storage by using external SSDs and modern chips are powerhouses. RAM management will always have the potential to be a bottleneck, not least because some applications are not so well written.

I currently have a 16gb M1 Air - which still does a very admiral job but can slow down a little with full RAM when jumping between apps.
I'm trying to work out what would be faster at heavy multitasking like this - M2 with 24GB RAM or M1 Pro with 16GB (with the increased 200GB/s memory bandwidth and faster SSD for swap memory). Do you have any ideas? Thanks

So the whole MBA M2 SSD read/write issue is redundant in that specific use case?

For what it's worth, I've had lots of memory errors on my 8GB M1 MacBook Air and I've never used it to do anything memory intensive. I think this may have been down to memory leaks in either Chrome or Snagit, and the issue seems to have gone away now.
I got this machine as a replacement after Apple were unable to fix an older (upgraded!) MacBook Air. I had a feeling that 8GB wasn't going to be enough and the early experience seemed to back that up.
If and when I upgrade, it'll definitely be to a 16GB version. I didn't know the M2 was on the way, so thanks for the heads up.

I use 8GB and it is always using around 2GB of compressed RAM and 6-7GB of actual RAM and this is on a relatively ultrabook workload. It does not slow down but I would agree, that 16GB gives you headroom and futureproofing in case you do have a more pro-workload in the future.

I swap between my 2015 MacBook Air that I replaced the 4gb ram with 16gb (hot air soldering was fun but the hex data editing wasn’t exactly easy) for work trips just web browsing, light work, and video, and my Ryzen 4800H laptop when I actually have to get things done.
Otherwise I prefer desktops with 3-5 displays. Hell I bring a portable monitor with me when I travel because 1 screen doesn’t really do the job.

I look at it like this. Apple “Normally” doesn’t add stuff on lower end products without a reason. So them adding a 24gb option tells me sooner or later we may need that higher ram amount. And since I’m a file hog 1 or 2 terabytes is a no brained for me. I’d go for the 14” or 16” but I really like a lightweight small form factor.

I ordered the 24 gb. I do some video editing at and music production. I went with 24 because Im looking towards the future. Its better to get as much memory now so it can extend the memory life of your computer when dealing with program requirements for example a year from now 16 gb might become adobe premiers standard requirement and 24 would then be the more than enough By time 24 become the basic requirement it will probably be years down the line and you'll probably be ready for a new computer by then.

Hi, thanks for your video - I never owned a Mac book and this Saturday I am looking to get the mac book air m2 and i’ve been watching so many vids with regards about the unified memory that it scared me a little in which to choose that it would suit me most and also am looking at keeping for around 5 yrs, if not more hopefully. I will deffo fall in the category of most users which I will be using for web browsing, watching movies, listening to music , emails and some work so basic sort of stuff. And hearing this - you have to get the 16GB or 24GB - which is so much more costly too, I am a bit at ease now to know that the 8GB should suit just fine.
I’m very excited about owning my first mac 🙂 I am still deciding on the colour.. but once I see them in store then i will make my decision. I will choose to purchase the Mac book air 8GB uni mem 256 SSD storage and 8-core GPU. Still doesn’t come cheap, €1349 but am hoping that will be totally worth it!
    Hopefully the right decision.
And finally, could you or perhaps someone else advise please - is it recommended screen protector for MBA together with case and keyboard protection? Or better to leave as is?

These are my personal thoughts on what amount of RAM is suitable for what use case
For general productivity and lightweight tasks (email, word processing, etc…) 8GB would be sufficient
For heavier tasks like video editing using first party software, 16GB would be ideal, but at a pinch, 8GB should be suitable
For heavier tasks that involve first party software, 16GB would generally be the bare minimum (since the software would generally not be as well optimised as apples own software), with 24GB being ideal (someone did actually run into an issue where they were having problems with a piece of software on an M1 machine with 16GB RAM, its unclear as to exactly what the issue was, but it could have been not enough RAM)

I do have a PowerBook G4 laptop, which I got in 2001 and it still works (now old enough to drink, here the drinking age is 21). Albeit that it is running a really old OS. I put in 2GB of matched RAM and a 250 GB SSD. It came with 1GB and 80 GB HDD. Then I have a MacBook Pro, that I got in 2008. This was the last PowerPC version. 4 GB of RAM and I have a 256 SSD. I have a 2013 MacBook Air, it came with an i7 and 8 GB of RAM, I upgraded the SSD from 512GB to 2TB. At the time it was the highest config. It is now 9 years old. it is the Mac that I am writing on right now. I found a way to get it to run Monterey. Officially this ended on BigSur, but I have Parallels and I have Windows 10 Pro, Linux Mint 20.3 and use the Cinnamon desktop. I write code in each and I have run out of memory before. I can only run one guest OS at a time, however. Having two cores I have to allocate CPU cores and disk space for the 3 OSes that I why I installed a 2TB SSD. I have been unable to get an M1 because with two children in college the tuition and their computers for school work, I've had to forgo mine. I also drive a 14 year old car. So, I will save up for the top config. If I amortize the US$2,500 over 10 years in simple depreciation, it is US$250 per year.

For instance, 5 days out of the week I'm just browsing the web & downlaoding mp3's. 1-2 nights out of the week, I am in a nightclub dj-ing with my DJ program (Serato DJ Pro), while also running a browser for quick music downloads on the fly, maybe Spotify to do a quick song search while I'm dj-ing, and maybe my Messages app so I can communicate with other people in the club. Does having 2-3 apps open simultaneously and actively using them take me out of the "normal" user range and into the 16GB Unified Memory Range? The 8 vs 16 debate continues over here.

I purchased the Apple M2 chip with 8‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 8GB RAM. Got home, started using it and then thought "it might be better to upgrade to 16GB RAM to future-proof."
I've owned MacBook Pros in the past and I found I got about 5 good years worth out of then and then they would die or slow down significantly (2004 and 2008 models). I'm getting the Air this time because I won't be editing videos regularly. But I would like this laptop to last me a long time (hence 16GB of RAM).
I've also owned/own an iMac (always at 16GB of RAM) and I found those to last me 10 years. (Late 2012 slim iMac was my last one. Bought the M1 iMac when it was announced as a replacement).

My rule of thumb: Order as much memory as you can afford. Who knows what macOS 18 will require 5 or 6 years from now.

I ordered the 16GB with 512GB of storage. I consider myself a normal user and am switching from a Dell XPS. I went with the 2 upgrades to “future proof” since I plan on using it for the next 4-5 years.

I’m actually planning to buy the 16gb 512ssd with eight cores version. Do y’all think this is a good option?

@@superarchangel Because unless you are doing a ton of high intensity graphic tasks you wont get you moneys worth. Also M2 runs hotter and with no fan and more cores you are gonna see a reduction of speed because the computer is overheating.

I think it's a decision for the specific workflow of everyone.
For instance: I am writing, using MS Word, have addionally opened Safari with around 10 - 12 tabs, have also opened Apple notes for research and Apple Music for listening to music. The 8 GB on my former M1 MacBook Air were fairly enough to handle this.
Besides from writing, I do lots of other stuff on my desktop computer, wich is a MacMini M1 with 16 GB. Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Apple Notes, Quicktime, Safari with around 40 - 50 tabs open. Well I close Final Cut and Photoshop as soon as I don't need them, but just with Safari opened and Apple notes, plus the background apps like OneDrive, G-Drive, Fantastical, Last Pass, Western Digital Server App, my free RAM always is around 2 GB (from 16).
Just a note: I tried all browsers on the market, but learned that I am fine with Safari.
Although only 2 GB RAM are free during my daily worklow, the system runs smooth and stable, but sometimes it might get to the point to totally hang up and reboots itself, when I exaggerate things and running 4 really big projects in Photoshop and do lots of stuff at the same time.
And of course: The longer I am running the MacMini the more likely it will crash. My uptimes are usually 3 - 4 weeks, before a crash is imminent. But I used to keep my Macs in sleep mode while not using them and don't shut them down.
So all in all: If you are editing videos, doing photo stuff, writing, calculating, creating presentations or surfing the web, the 8 GB will be fine. But the more you do AT THE SAME TIME (keeping applications open, because you just want to get back to them in a minute or so) the more RAM is required. There's a lot of reloading pages in Safari with 40 tabs open, because of the memory management of MacOS. Haven't those reloading "issues" on Intel-Macs (but my last Intel Mac had 64GB).
