The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

It is really a heartbreaking story, but floor ( with her own faults) stepped in and brought joy back into Nightwish. I think this is why Wacken is so legendary. Empu walking around and comforting everyone... ( basicaly saying : Floor got this..) Gosh I love this band!

He didn't "just" consider ending the band, he considered ending his life. According to him, he didn't go through with it because of the hurt it would cause he'd leave behind. He "killed himself" in this song in place of the real thing...

    Hello
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

Also - regarding Emppu walking over and talking to Tuomas near the beginning ... he was "checking" on him, if he was okay, because the song is so personal to both of them. At the point of this recording, only Tuomas, Emppu and Marko were still performing members of the band. At the very end, you'll see Marko walk over and the three of them are together as the song ends. The super power of this band is love ... and it's on display here. Floor leaves her heart on the stage, pouring out Tuomas' emotions in her voice. Tuomas had asked the sound engineers to turn off the vocal in his in-ear monitors - it was very hard on him - and because of that, they no longer play this song live. They're in a far better place in their lives now. Tuomas has found his life partner in Johanna!

There's no reference to what Emppu and Toumas is talking about other than UA-cam comments. I would have loved it if it's true but we don't know. About the in ears Toumas has said in interviews that sometimes he asked the sound guys to turn off the vocals and at times the memories comes back to him. Please don't take this as a critic of You. It's just so much stuff floating around about Nightwish in the comment sections that doesn't reflect the truth. Almost as if it's fan based wishful thinking.

@@Anders_Eriksson I don't take it personally, but if you watch the look on his face, he seems almost embarrassed by whatever Emppu said to him. It actually none of our business, but we know Tuomas is emotional and self-reflective by his writing, we also know there is a certain fragility in his feelings about the split. Tuomas was, at the least, dear friends with Tarja, and at the most, had a crush on her. I tend to believe the former. I think most of us have had friends where an eventual significant other takes over their life (professional and/or personal) and impose their ambition on their talent when they have little of it on their own. I think most of the negativity was directed at Marcelo, but the die-hard fans of Tarja directed it at Tuomas and it damaged him. I've never been a fan of Tarja, as I do not like or appreciate opera, and that seems to be her primary lane. The fact that Marco goes over at the end, and all three of them stand together shows solidarity in my mind, as all three were involved, along with Jukka, in the decision. I don't think Emppu was telling him jokes, I think he was checking on him. You are welcome to disagree, but I appreciate your comment.

Great reaction. IMO this is Nightwish's best song and an amazing piece of art. It is Tuomas's most personal and emotional song as it is for Nightwish's fans. In 2005 things between the band and their lead singer Tarja had reached a point they could no longer work together. The band fired Tarja via an open letter in a very public way. Shortly after Tarja responded with her own open letter. Both can be found on line. Nightwish fans blamed Tuomas personally for her firing, despite it being a band decision, I directed a huge amount of anger and hatred towards him of r what they believed was the end of their favorite band. This drove Tuomas into a deep depression. One of the ways he dealt with his depression was to write this song where he uses the framework of Edgar Allen Poe's the Pit and the Pendulum as a means to explore his journey through his depression and his recovery. One of the best deep dives into the song is an analysis by the artist Annika Hausen. Search her name and Poet and the Pendulum to find her writing (can't post link, YT deletes my comment every time I do). Read her analysis. Read the open letters. Then go back and listen again and see if the emotional impact of the song doesn't hit you even harder. Greatest Show on Earth is their second greatest masterpiece IMO. Inspired by the works of Richard Dawkins it is the history of Earth and evolution in a 24 minute song. The Tampere performance is my favorite (outdoor stage, fireworks, Floor's outfit, Troy using his Low Whistle instead of an E-Bow and guitar) because I think it is the most epic performance but Wembley is also pretty good. In either case watch to the end to get the full effect from the spoken words in the beautiful outro.

Tuomas, in 2007: "It’s a very personal song, about the uppermost self hate and self disgust you can feel. The feeling that you’ll never stop doing wrong things in your life. On this song, I actually killed myself. The heartbeat fades away. But after that comes the resurrection! (laughs) The last tree minutes is like my ressurection. Jesus-like! (laughs) But seriously again, it was something that I really had to do. Is the most ugly and disturbing lyrics I’ve ever wrote, but I needed to do it. Now I feel a certain relief with that."

This is a deep song which until you know the back story you won't catch all of the meaning. If you read the story people will no doubt tell you in the comments it will be good for you to go watch it again afterwards, you will enjoy it more I think
The Greatest Show On Earth is another deep song which you will get more enjoyment from from watching it multiple times, you will always hear more details that you didn't pick up on the first time you see it
I would recommend the Tampere concert version when you first watch it as it has more 'WOW!' moments, but then after you have seen it once, watching the Wembley concert version will be good for you because you will hear more things that you missed the first time

Tuomas is a very special person and this is, for me, the pinnacle of his work.
    Nothing surpasses it.
For him it is one of the deepest songs.
Quotes from the band on the making of the album and the song...
TUOMAS: We will never play "Bye Bye Beautiful" or "Master Passion Greed" live again, [sic] because the lyrics are just too unambiguous and personal. There was at least as much gloom behind "The Poet and the Pendulum", too, but it leaves a bit more room for interpretation. It's easily one of our best songs but especially, the "Mother and Father'" part in the end always stirs up such a storm of emotions that it's impossible for me to do it every night. Playing "The Poet and the Pendulum' is a real rollercoaster ride - it makes me feel anxious, blush, laugh, and, in the end, just happy that that part of my life is behind me.
    My notes:
My number 1 Nightwish song and for good reasons.
(No 2, Song of Myself, No 3 7 Days to the Wolves.)
This is a deeply emotional and meaningful song with which I empathise and it helped me to see that there was a way forward when depression struck. I am not alone in being "saved" by Nightwish, a fact that Tuomas has referred to and said he could not terminate the band because he knows they have meant so much to some fans who feel their lives have been saved by Nightwish.
He feels that he has a responsibility to the fans - not your standard rock musician then.
Floor is worth watching closely, her facial, hand and whole-body motions reflect the emotions she is portraying. Hands in Mother and Father for example. Tearing her hair in the Dark Passion Play section.
Note that when Tuomas talks about "Poet" he is always referencing himself. It happens throughout his ouvre.
You will see other cross-references too. Tuomas does that deliberately to give the fans a sort of anchor. Meadows of Heaven is another example - a song in itself and often referenced.
For what it's worth, here are are my thoughts and interpretations...
End to beginning - death of one era of the band, beginning of a new era.
Regarding the end of the first Era, I see no point in the blame game.
The band split, that is all we need to know.
Whatever the causes there was bound to be emotion on both sides so I leave it at that.
But this masterpiece is what came out of Tuomas' emotions.
The beginning is a boy soprano, Guy Elliott who also does the spoken parts. The whispering at the beginning is the central spoken section, but played in reverse.
Then we get the whole section "Home".
I see the "shoulder cries more" as having no shoulder to cry on because the other members of the band - his friends - were equally upset.
The "whore for the cold world" I see as the selling of his whole life to the music industry (the metaphorical pimps, hence the "whore" references) which is not interested in the person, only what they can get from the band.
The two faces bit is self explanatory; almost everyone will have been in situations where they have to hide their feelings and present a false front to the world.
The reference to betrayal is again obvious and there are lots of metaphors in the surrounding words. The altar I think, is the tie to the band - these upheavals in 2004/5 were not the first time Tuomas had felt like ending the band.
By the way, note the 3 minutes and counting: exactly 3 minutes later you get the guillotine motion.
By the way, Marco made the demo version of this, with all the lyrics sung by himself and with harsher lyrics at this point too.
Next we get to the Mother and Father section with Floor, Marco and Emppu all sitting, while Floor sings lyrics reflecting the words from his mother when he went back home for a break in the middle of all this turmoil.
These are the words of love and then of advice, that he was given.
Floor here is using her finger movements to accentuate emotion.
This whole section and the way Floor sings it, is packed with those damned Onion Ninjas.
    Marco's harmonies are wonderful.
We end with the final ethereal notes from Floor and here is another tingle-factor moment. Then a gentle piano ending, the calm after the emotional storm.
Here, as in Sparkle my Scenery, the choir on the original album is replaced by Floor who wanted to sing them herself (and proved completely capable of it) which Anette could not have done - she could probably get the notes but the emotion is there in the choral original and is amplified when Floor sings it.
The low brass used in many places is really effective.
    On the performance itself:
When Emppu goes over to Tuomas and later both Marco and Emppu go over, it is a sign of moral support. They both know how difficult this is for him - eventually he had the vocals turned off in his in-ear, so he didn't have to listen to them because Floor put such emotion into them.
At the end, she does not say "Thank you" immediately, as she does normally. Instead she looks over for a few seconds to check on him from her position.
BTW, I have never bought the theory that Tuomas was "in love" with Tarja. Those who say he asked her to join the band because he knew her from school - she was suggested by Emppu who had known her as an acquaintance at school.

Tarja was fired in 2005. Tuomas is the keyboard player, and the poet mentioned in this song. This song is about suicide. When Tarja was fired, there was a huge backlash. Friends betrayed Tuomas. A member of the Finnish government openly criticized him. Tuomas contemplated suicide - then wrote this song. The point where it mentions 3 minutes is musical mastery - it's a countdown to the fading heartbeat. It's also important to note: at the end of this song it says it's the beginning.

    Great reaction, many thanks👍🏻
Tuomas borrowed heavily from "The Pit and The Pendulum" when he wrote this, which is a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story describes the psychological torment of a prisoner during the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. The prisoner is trapped in a dark, rat-infested room with slippery, sloped floors leading to a Pit with a swinging Pendulum above. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear.
The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church because he was angry with God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease.
I wonder whether Toumas's anguish was NOT due to the fact that he fired Tarja (the original singer) from the band, but because he felt he was being publicly tortured and executed by his so-called fans for doing so.
I also wonder whether the song was arranged into 5 parts to reflect the 5 stages of grieving: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.
An awesome musical adaptation of classical literature.

Love your reaction and the emotions the song as you say like a song brings out in you. The song is in five parts and as you say precisely as a poem and play. The story is about Nightwish's keyboard player and song writer Tuomas.Tuomas is drinking excessively and Tarja is gone and with her all his hopes and dreams and seemingly all the future songs that will never be sung by such a loss!🖤

  • @johan7170

Tuomas wrote that song a few monthes afer the band parted ways with the original singer, Tarja Turunen. It was a nasty break-up with fans taking side either for Tuomas or for Tarja and blaming either of them for the break up. In Finland (Nightwish's homecountry) it became so huge that even the prime minister spoke about it. Tuomas was very affected by all this, to the point he suffered from depression and thought about suicide. He wrote that song as catharsis, he killed himself in the song so that he won't do it in the real world.

Greatest Show on Earth: you have two choices of performance. Pick what matters more to you!
🧑🏻‍🦳🎻Wembly has the evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins, reading some of his material quoted in the song live on stage. Troy also gets his paws on an e-bow adding just a touch of fresh sound to the early bit. It sounds so lovely!
🎆Tempere has synchronized fireworks, giving the orchestral hits thrilling explosive power! It also features a final view from the air (balloon, drone?). It's truly magical to see, and might barely be in the lead as the crowd favorite.
Either way, get yourself a beverage and strap in for the most enthralling, emotional song you'll ever hear about evolution! Just DON'T STOP TOO SOON! Humanity dies long before the show is over and it sounds like it's the end when it isn't!

On the backstory of this song.. the super short version is that when Nighwish fired their first singer Tarja, they got so much hate mail from the fans that Tuomas wrote a song in which he killed himself metaphorically, to keep himself from doing it in real life.
Are you ready for 'The Greatest Show on Earth"? I think so. It's an even longer song than this one, but it does not have as much darkness in it. It's about life on Earth. Evolution. Endless Forms Most Beautiful, which was the album title.

At 16:27 you ask "The Greatest Show On Earth .. Am I ready for that one?". Yes you are. You weren't for this one tho. Hard to predict how people will react when they go in unprepared. Which can be part of the "fun". I've seen quite some reactors going in blind. Even those who were expecting another banger or a fun song, quickly picked up on the gravitas. Strong cues from the music, lyrics & the on stage demeanour of the band members are hard to miss, but it can happen.
That's why many "recommenders" advise to do a little digging into the backstory. Which seems logical, but may also come with its own downsides. I've seen quite a few reactors who'd allowed themselves to be so thoroughly prepped, that any chance for a spontaneous experience seemed to have been lost. In other words, it's a toss up whether one or the other leads to a reaction that's both spontaneous and also in sync with the performance.
While you picked up on the heart beat and at an earlier stage 5:25 on the "seriousness" of the lyrics (said with a big smile), I'd say there was an overall disconnect. So I have a hunch that yours would've been a very different reaction, had you done some digging beforehand. Would it have been a "better" one? Dunno. I reckon we might have seen less gesturing, dance moves and signs that you were busy showing us, the viewers, how much you love the band instead of allowing the song to really get to you.
Before diving into the Greatest Show, perhaps do "I Want My Tears Back" from BA 2018? Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

Nightwish Army south Brittany France reporting.
Guy Eliot, (doubt he's a soprano now) sings the first part.
Toumas is the widow, losing his friend Tarja. The band fired her. He got a lot of hate for this and suffered from depression, but everyone was suffering and there was no shoulder to cry on. But he wanted to be back on stage, he was a whore for his music and performing.
Everyone should have someone, friends, family to bury them, but Toumas with his hard heart had no one. His corpse was left to rot, the crows feasting on him. Good riddance, he's going to hell. 3 minutes and counting, the pendulum cuts his throat. He returns to his family.
Throughout the performance Empuu and Marco check in on him, both at the end, he's ok. I think this was the last time they performed it, Toumas said he was over it.
Marco, Floor and Empuu sitting on the front of Kai's drum stage, the camera turns to Toumas, alone, this part chokes me, to the extent I can no longer watch this performance except through reactions. Floors gentle "thank you" at the end , I cry.
Incidentally the whispered lyrics at the start are the spoken words from part III, backwards. There's no room for massive egos in Nightwish, as Tarja found out, " bye bye", interesting watching this performance, Tarja was fired the keyboard player, composer and leader of the band, Toumas got a lot of hassle and hate, even the Finnish government got involved, depression followed, the Poet and the Pendulum effectively Toumas's suicide (or maybe the band).
    The trilogy
"Poet" deals with the aftermath of Tarja leaving the band.
" Bye bye beautiful" is a song written to Tarja.
"Master, passion, greed" is written for Marcelo, Tarjas husband.
    Possibly Nightwish's heaviest song

In the Desert of Set (live Wacken 2001), Adulruna Rediviva (live Budapest 2007) and The Wine of Aluqah ( live Wacken 2001) are good places to start.

This song CAN be loved and appreciated ‘cold’. But really you can only fully appreciate the nuances of the song , Tuomas own singing, Emppu and Marko supporting Tuomas, Tuomas having his earpieces turned off, Floor singing her heart out, that final banshee wail and such a gentle ‘thank you’.if you know the back story. The song starting with the end and finishing with ‘the beginning’. Well done fir spotting the heartbeat. You think it’s a movie and you want to go back and watch it again. No it’s not a movie, it’s Tuomas’ own suicide and resurrection. Please learn the back story , THEN watch it again, but with a box of tissues to hand. If ‘pacific’ does not bring a tear, then surely ‘mother and father’ will.

To me, this might be the best Nightwish song ever. I always get emotional when I hear it.
Tuomas wrote this song after Tarja was kicked out of Nightwish. Tarja and Tuomas grew up together, his mother was her piano teacher, and the two of them (together with Emmpu) eventually formed Nightwish. Tuomas eventually developed strong feelings for Tarja, but she married another man in 2003. She also distanced herself a bit more from the band, who thought she was acting more and more as a diva.
Eventually the rest of the band decided to kick her out; Tuomas wrote a letter which all the other band members signed and handed to her after a tour, and it was also posted on their website afterwards. To deal with Tarja leaving and his feelings about it and her, Tuomas wrote this song, which is an absolute masterpiece.

Always interesting to see how a reactor who is not aware of the story behind this song is shocked by the lyrics. Keep in mind Inna, all of the sexual references are being used metaphorically. This is the story of the end of the Tarja era and the fallout that Tuomas dealt with from the media and the fans. he took the blame for firing Tarja, the beloved singer of Nightwish.
A true masterpiece and one of a kind example of next level musical artistry. IMHO

Ofcourse its serious. Its Tuomas' lyrical suicide. Based on past evets involving the firing of the og singer, Tarja. As others have mentioned and/or explained, its definitely worth researching. So you know the true weight and impact of this song. Its a beautifully epic but extremely tragic, and sad song. This is why people need to research songs like this beforehand.
