Quân Nguyên actually means the Yuan army from Mongol-ruled China, not the Nguyen army.

@@asianlifter yep exactly. The tone marks on a word (Nguyễn vs. Nguyên) do make a big difference on what the word means. Nguyên 元 without Quân (which means army 軍) would only mean Nguyên as a person’s first name like Nguyên Nguyễn. Nguyên can also mean as a “whole” (原）such as nguyên tử (原子- atom, whole of a cell) and it can also mean “former” or “head” (元）such as nguyên thủ (元首 - head of state). Quân Nguyên in this context means Yuan army (元軍). Nguyên can also mean “source” (源）as well, as in tài nguyên （財源 - resources)。
