YT Capra Core 1 MX First Ride : Budget MTB EXPERIMENT PART 2

  • I’m todays videos I’ll be getting my first ride on my new YT Industries Capra Core 1 Mullet setup. This is YT’s most affordable mountain bike that they offer. I’m super excited to test this bike out on the trails and see how it rides, how it fairs as a trail bike and also how a mullet setup feels. I’ve wanted to try a mullet bike for awhile so I’m so stoked to finally give it a shot! I’m riding at my local trails in Lexington Kentucky at Veterans Park. It’s a perfect blend of high speed flow, lots of jumps, rollers and berms with only a little bit of climbing so it’ll be the perfect place for me to see how the Capra core 1 handles. Im very excited to see how the Capra fairs as a trail bike on a regular MTB trail and how the components on this bike perform. If you missed the first part in this series Im doing an experiment this summer on how will a budget mountain bike fair for an average mountain bike rider.
    My Summer Experiment:
    So recently I had an idea that I got so hyped on I said screw it, I'm doing it and I'm going to be the test dummy for this experiment. Listen.
    In a world where a decent mountain bike will cost you several thousand dollars it's hard to make that big of a leap of purchasing a new bike, Whether you're a new comer into the sport or someone just looking for an upgrade. Believe me I understand, I've had my YT jeffsy for 5 years and loved it but wanted to try something new.however As a husband and now father, the thought of spending that much money on another bike is hard to stomach. And the urge to ride something new has been stronger than ever after just recently spending a weekend riding my buddies Canyon strive CFR at snowshoe bike park. And that is what spawned this idea: can a budget friendly bike satisfy the average mountain bike rider? Or should you save up and take the hit of buying a more expensive mountain bike.
    The Yt Capra core 1 looks like it should pack an insane amount of value for the price and with it sitting at $2300 currently, plus I'm a huge YT fan, as well as my current YT has held up. So over the summer I'm going to be putting this bike through the paces and testing it bone stock to the limit to let you know, is it worth it? How's it perform? How it climbs, handles the bike parts etc, and how it holds up over a season of riding , if it's required upgrades etc, to help you know if a budget MTB will satisfy your trail needs? Or is the price tag with a higher end bike necessary for a good time.

    Thanks for your review. I’m looking at this Capra or a Jeffsy. Or the Polygon Siskiu T8. Trying to stick close to $2k and all 3 of these are discounted right now. Any thoughts on a direction to go?

    • @BoardsBikesAndHikes
      @BoardsBikesAndHikes  Рік тому +7

      No problem! Thanks for checking it out! It honestly all depends on what you plan on riding the most. But that being said the Capra is an insane deal right now for $1999 ($300 cheaper than when i got mine) I’m not as familiar with Polygons, I’ve had some friends look at getting them but never actually seen one in person but here’s what I can say based off my experience with YT.
      I’ve had my Jeffsy since 2018 and it’s been a phenomenal bike. It’s definitely a Jack of all trades and rides everything well. I would not hesitate to take it anywhere, it’s not going to be the BEST per day in any one category but it’s going to perform well anywhere you ride it. It is lighter and pedals better than the Capra, and I do think it functions better as an everyday trail bike. So far the Capra definitely prioritizes the descents, jumps etc. so it’s a bit burlier going uphill but it is going to be able to go that much harder in the downhill. The reason I’ve opted for it now over the jeffsy is simply because the trails we ride a lot of times now are not as “pedally or XC protected oriented” like they used to be. We ride places now where basically you get short DH runs but with a pedal back up to the top. Plus we do visit the occasional bike park and so I wanted something that was going to allow me to ride a little harder. With the price as low on the Capra right now it would be hard to pass it up given the Jeffsy isn’t marked down as much. But if you are going more pedaling than descending the Jeffsy would be the way to go.
      Plus YT as a brand I’ve been very happy with. Both bikes have been excellent quality. My Jeffsy has required nothing other than basic Maintence and the only time I did message customer service I got a super quick reply so no complaints on that end.

    Great video. I’m 5’8 usually a medium. What’s pro n cons if I get a small size Capra

    • @BoardsBikesAndHikes
      @BoardsBikesAndHikes  29 днів тому

      Thanks for checking it out! I would stick with the medium if I were you. The cockpit on the Capra feels smaller than some other bikes I’ve been on(and I mean that in a good way) it’s a very comfortable and easy to maneuver on. I’m 5’10 and the large feels perfect. I normally fall where I can go large or medium and I’m glad I went large. I feel like the medium would definitely be too small for me. On the size chart on their site the medium also says that’s right where you should be 😁

    I am planning on ordering a YT capra core 1 MX.Can u help me out by saying how it felt on the climbs, does it feel like an absolute downhill monster that cant really climb or does it have a simmilar feel to the jeffsy.And do you think that the mullet setup is good for someone thats more of a beginner like me? Thanks.

    • @BoardsBikesAndHikes
      @BoardsBikesAndHikes  Рік тому

      Nice! It’s definitely worth the price point, I think you will be very happy with it !
      As for climbing, it feels about like the jeffsy to me. It’s a little bit bulkier but honestly it’s still pedals and climbs really well. Plus it is way more fun on the flats and descents. I’ve been using it as a do it all Bike with no issues so far. I do plan on making a video taking it on some more challenging climbs just to see how it goes.
      I think the mullet set up would work really well for a beginner. It makes it easier to lean into turns, as well as get your weight back over the rear vs a 29er, where it feels a little more difficult sometimes because of the larger tire hitting you in the butt.

    from everything iv been excessively been looking around about bikes for new riders and stuff i just bought this bike while its on sale for 2k over the jeffsy on sale for a couple hundred more because downhill is the whole point for me. id rather have to put in a bit more effort up to have a ton of fun on the way down.(mx all the way because im a motocross rider and who doesnt want to say their bike is on a "mullet" set up) I also went with sludge green lol the name sold the colorway for me

    • @BoardsBikesAndHikes
      @BoardsBikesAndHikes  Рік тому

      I think for the price right now you can’t beat it! It’s an insane value! You’re going to absolutely love it! Even though it is a bit burlier to ride around, it’s really not bad, a little more sluggish than the jeffsy but you are correct, on the descents, jumps, etc, way way better. Not that the jeffsy is bad but this is just better. I can’t wait to get it to a proper bike park and really open it up😬 and the MX setup is an absolute blast!
      Same on the color haha, wait till you see it in person too, video and photo don’t do it justice. It’s a sick paint job

    • @BoardsBikesAndHikes
      @BoardsBikesAndHikes  5 місяців тому +1

      I’ve been using it for that purpose exactly. It’s a little burlier on climbs than the jeffsy but way more fun on the descent, berms and jumps. Both are excellent bikes though. Out of the 2 I’m preferring this now, and I spent 5 years in my jeffsy. Uhhhhhh are you gonna go straight 29 or get the MX? I’m 5 10 and the large is perfect on the MX

      @@BoardsBikesAndHikes thank you so much for your input! I will probably go mx because you sound very happy with that choice. And most likely large frame. I am only 5,8 but I see your 5 10. Two inch should not be big difference.

    • @BoardsBikesAndHikes
      @BoardsBikesAndHikes  5 місяців тому +1

      @@paulventicinque9012 ya it’s a smaller large. Its bigger than a medium but a more comfortable reach than my jeffsy 29 was. If you had gone full 29 the medium might not have been bad, but I think you’ll like the large in the MX. I think Mx is really the way to go and I was a die hard 29er fan. how DB 8 brakes work? Are they good enough? They have average reviews... I want to buy a Capra but I don't know which model. I'm wondering between core 1 and core 2. Is core 2 worth the $500 extra?

    • @ManicTrailBanter
      @ManicTrailBanter Рік тому +1

      So the Core 2 gets you Fox Suspension, Crank Brothers wheels and Code brakes… probably worth the extra money, although I will say I have the SRAM DB8 brakes on my Trek build and I really like them a lot. I just ordered the Capra Core 1 and my first upgrade would likely be wheels/hubs or drivetrain before I would consider changing the brakes. If you could afford the Core 2 with GX I would say that would be ideal as the NX drivetrain are known to be finnicky. As far as I can tell, most of the Capras are sold out, at least in the USA.

    • @kevinkoz01

      @@ManicTrailBanter thanks for the quick reply! I'm in Europe and I just have these two models available. Core 2 with GX is already more expensive and the difference is $ 860, that's why I was thinking about core 2 nx. I was just afraid that I would take core 1 and after the purchase it would require changing components, but as you say that the brakes are fine, I will decide on core 1 😊 Why would you want to replace the wheels, they are too heavy?

    • @ManicTrailBanter
