      I agree that this album is very innovative and it really utilizes a sound that is heavy and beautiful and really ahead of it's time, but I have to disagree that it's *the* most underrated album of music history. It is ONE OF the most underrated albums of music history, definitely in the top 10.

      @w0bbl3r 4 роки тому +2

      @@nathandevane1725 Just using a bit of hyperboly there.
      But it has to be pretty high. Mostly in terms of how badly rated it WAS on release, compared to how great it was. The discrepency there is huge compared to other underrated albums.
      I would say that probably about as high as this, but with not so much of a huge gap between how hated it was and how great it actually was, would be the demolition 23 album from around the same time. Absolutely stellar album that also still holds up today 100%
      Or d-generation album from the same period. Not quite as good today as it was back then, but still hugely under-represented in the music scene

    Saw the tour with John....they were so heavy and powerful.
    I saw them previously 3 times with Vince...and the show with John was far superior.
    Love the album they did with John....was it exactly CRUE?! Not sure...but musically its the strongest record they put out....and live John is and will forever be a much stronger vocalist. I understand Vince is the guy most people think of when they picture the voice of Crue (and I like TFFL & SATD) but I woukd have loved to see where they could have gone if they kept John in the band. Not to mention...I've met John several times....cool as hell and humble....met Vince twice...total arrogant douchebag both times.

    But 2nd times and keep on listening the self title album + mini album Quaternary..then i became addicted to it..

    I bought this album on cassette tape back in the day and loved it. But wow, seeing this retrospective is pretty telling. As a younger fan who luckily managed to see the Crue multiple times they did unnecessarily dog Vince a lot during this era, while Vince took the highroad. You can see how insecure Nikki is going: "That was the past bla bla" "We took 1/4th out and replaced it with something better. Wow, give me a f'k break. That past gave you a roof over your head, a luxury lifestyle and a viable musical career. There's no denying how musically diverse and good this album was. However, Vince's record with Steve Stevens (which I bought on cassette tape also) wasn't chopped liver either.

    Was at the Stadium Tour at Coors Field in Denver, CO last night. I had seen Motley three times in the past, the first time was 1983 (I was 17) in Colorado Springs, CO at the Colo.Spgs. Auditorium...maybe 2500 people. I actually went to see the band who opened for them, SAXON. The other 2 times I saw them I went to see the other bands they were playing with as well...they opened for Ozzy Osbourne and I saw them with the Scorpions. My memories of the 1983 concert are vague but it was a ok concert and a ok band. Personally Motley Crue should have stayed with John Corabi. A more complete band with a very strong sound. Crue ended the night in Denver and I have to say they were the disappointment of the evening. You could really feel they were just going through the motions. If they would have ended the evening with Def Leppard my night would have been complete. I stayed for my son, who idolizes Nikki Sixx. So there you go....:)

      Yea but that 94 album wasnt just alternative sounding,it had a few HUGE metal moments and also soulful cuts as well!!imo it's EASILY their best work MUSICALLY ,just should have taken the motley crue name off and did something like what Nikki did,maybe sixx A.M. or something,cuz that album was TOO damn good from 1-12 and even the bonus tracks that came out on the motley crucial crue records were good,maybe my favorite rock album period!!its a shame there wasnt some leftover material from that period,besides the SWINE disc that vince ended up on!!

    the band had professional filming done of their entire recording process for a home vhs when the album was made. some of this is that footage i would assume.
    i would kill to hear a lot of the personality #9 music...i have interviews where nikki and john talked about song titles like " the year i lived in a day", " la dolce vita", "sunrise", and a whole host of others. we will never hear them though.

    I think they should had record another record with john because he was very talented and he had a really good voice. I think the reason why the motley crue albulm with corabi didn't work it's because it was the end of the golden era of glam and heavy metal and the beginning of grunge/ rap so the people didn't care a lot about the albulm... Fire corabi was a big mistake

      IMO - this album still sounds fresh, diverse and innovative at least to my ears. Back then it wasn't well received AT ALL. Seeing them on this tour in La Crosse, WI in 1994, there was less than 1,000 people. Prior, on the Dr. Feelgood tour, they were a few hundred tickets short of a 9,000 sell out. Hope you check out my other Corabi Crue era stuff and consider subscribing!

      My take is the album flopped when released, and the tour flopped. They found that most of their fanbase needed their Motley Crue with Vince. Management told them they need to get Vince back in. They caved.

    • @themarsvoltas
      @themarsvoltas 5 років тому +1

      They quit drugs and they couldn't handle each other. They were on the road a lot and they didn't party. The split is unclear. The music was changing either way and with Vince that probably couldn't happen. His daughter got really sick during his solo album. The return was pressure from the record label and managment. They were already were writing Generation Swine. John had to teach Vince all of it. You can hear some clips on UA-cam. After they officially split with John he just bought a car and his girl left him. All in the same day. He went to a park over looking the city and put a gun in his mouth and broke down. He started Union after that. They were good but not great. A couple years ago John toured doing 1994 in completion with a band. Mars is said to be working with John on his solo album with Tommy. I thought I heard this wasn't going to happen because Nikki had them sign a contract preventing them working with John.

    A bit of a weird album, without Vince, who sucks as a singer anyway. However, this one doesn't sound the way it does because Vince isn't there, there's much more to it. Darker, faster vibe. More serious stuff, hard to find these days. In fact, I don't find it anywhere for quite a while now. We may be looking at an extinct breed... These goofy guys with their long hair are nothing less than brilliant. This album is a high standard all time classic. Consider this Solaris, compared to Titanic.

    I was a teen in the early 70s so wasn't into late 80s hair bands or RATT/Crue.
    But I did like alternative, industrial and grunge of the early-mid 90s as well as Corabi era Motley Crue.
    The band should have done what Guns & Roses and RATM did when their original singers left by changing their name i.e Velvet Revolver and Audioslave.
    When they brought back Vince Neil he sounded awful and their albums were piss-poor at best.
    Feel very fortunate to have seen them perform live outdoors THIRTY years ago w/Type O Negative opening.

    John is a great singer. Actually, he is is a true professional and has always said great things about Vince and actually vice versa. It was a heavier sound, but it also came across as "forced" like the grunge scene hit and it was like "oh cR*ap how do we stay relevant"? Ok, lets deny our past. Nikki looks like he raided Izzy Stradlins wardrobe (which works for Izzy not Sixx). To be honest the best part of this era of Crue was Corabi . Fans got it right, it wasn't Motley

    All you guys should have supported this album in 94' if you LOVE IT like you claim you do. If this album had even 1 hit or a marginal hit maybe Elektra and Motley would have made a 2nd record but NO nobody supported this record at all and Elektra wanted to use the new Crue as a Tax write off.
    Truth hurts.

    I love the Crue. I have loved the band when I started getting into music in 1987, but these guys were dicks after Vince was out of the band. Taking shots all the time, calling him fat. I found it to be a bit childish for guys in their mid 30’s. I honestly don’t know how they were able to ever mend fences.

    Total no-win scenario. This iteration of the band is too different to call it Motley Crue (both Van Halen and AC/DC still sounded like the same band with different singers), but it probably still would have not gotten the proper exposure with a different name. Crying shame, since it's a great album.
