Thank you for this special video about your 6 -string! I especially appreciated the extra bit explaining why it's different than Glen Campbell's 6-string. I always walk away from your videos feeling educated and inspired.
Thank you Patrick, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I have to say thank you to you with regards the Glen Campbell Bass VI part, as it was your comment on my Instagram post inspired that addition. Thanks again for watching and supporting my channel and music! I really appreciate it! Thanks Gavin
Just another tool in the toolbox when called for. Most gigs where other people are paying you to play won’t require it or even want it, but if you’re making your own music and it’s what you need to express yourself then go for it. I have one but very rarely play it for pay and prefer my 4 string as my hands get fatigued on it after a while. You are right about proper muting. That’s a big difference you’ll encounter. Big hands also help. I don’t have those! 😂
You have nailed it! Had to be the right tool for the right gig. Sadly I actually sold that bass but I find the same principle applies to my high C five string & fretless basses. And I also have the same issue, small hands do make it more difficult! 😂 thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks! That’s awesome to hear, glad you are loving your Dean! Really cool basses! Yeah totally, the jump to a 6 takes some getting used to but definitely a worthwhile one for certain jobs. Thanks for watching and commenting! Gavin
I have the exact same bass in my hand. lol, and Scottish accent is the coolest English accent on the planet, long live Scotland mate. :-) Ed from Vancouver, Canada.
That’s awesome! Loved mine. Sadly I sold mine recently to fund another instrument… I certainly regret it! 😂 Thanks! I appreciate that - much better than the usual response of “what language is this guy speaking?” 😂 . Also, my dad used to follow the Canucks. And Vancouver is still a place I’d love to see. Thanks again for watching and commenting! Thanks Gavin
I have a Peavey Fury VI six string bass, and it's a joy to play! It took a little getting used to, but, now I can't play a four or five string bass without missing that C string. Not only does it make scales infinitely easier, but it also gives you much easier access to those high notes, as well as giving a more crisp & defined sound for those higher notes. :)
That’s cool to hear, thank you for sharing that. You’re so right, that high C is perfect for making those high notes sing. Even though I’m now back playing 4s predominantly for the music I’m playing just now, but I do miss the high C for those melodies for sure! Thanks for commenting and for watching the video! Thanks Gavin
@@gavinforbesmusic5164 You're very welcome! Thank -you- for making this video. Six string basses do not get enough love, they're often written off as bulky, heavy, and just awkward. And yes, they are heavy (A good strap will help mitigate this), but long story short, if you stick to it, they become irresistibly fun and convenient to play.
Thank you! I really do appreciate that. And I’m glad it helped you make the decision. And an update if it helps, I stupidly sold mine to find another instrument I needed for a project - and 100% regret it and want another one! Thanks again! Gavin
Excellent video. I went to a camp where a pro. touring player was not in favor of 6 strings due to the strain on the hand in the long run. Having small hands, playing a 5 string was already difficult.... Cheers
Thank you! I really appreciate that. That’s a good point, everyone has different hands and for some the wide neck would not be comfortable at all. Interestingly I have really small hands and have found this one to be very comfortable due to the wafer think neck profile. but like you heard at the camp, that will be different between different players and different basses. Very good point. Thanks again for watching and commenting! Thanks Gavin
Gavin. The song is melodic and vocal, just beautiful. It really holds your gentle signature yet goes that bit further. Wowee! You know when you walk down stairs and you get out of sync and tred on an extra bottom step? What happens when you switch between 4-5-6 strings do you look for notes that aren't there or forget to play the ones that are there? On a 6 string are there different ways of making exactly the same chords and is this something that has to be mastered and perhaps used to advantage? What about a bass amp for a 6 string would one within a regular budget cut the mustard at both ends of the frequency spectrum especially for live work? Well I see many bass and guitar players having more and more strings as a youtube gimmick you have showed us that you have mastered and love this one for sure.
Thank you Martin! I really appreciate it that! That’s a very good point actually about swapping between as often going from a 4 to a 5 for the first time results in some dodgey notes thinking you are hitting a big open E string and hitting the low B instead! Thankfully after some time playing both, you get more used to it and get comfortable with the changes. And the point about chords is a good one too as guitars and basses feature one thing a piano doesn’t - the exact same notes in multiple places on the fretboard. So yes indeed the extra options mean multiple shapes and voicing for chords. This also comes with the tonal differences mention in the video and previously on the synth video about location on the fretboard altering the tone slightly. But yeah it definitely gives those options for chords for sure. Great question. And another great one about the amp! It’s interesting as they do sound amazing through a standard good bass amp. But some bassists find guitar amps/ preamps into pa speakers etc to add character or extra range to their tone for melodic playing, or even just bi amping into a bass amp for the low end and a bass amp for the top end. This does come with its own complications though with regards using crossovers etc. this is why modellers like the helix or similar are becoming useful to bass players - play through a bass amp and a guitar amp without any crossovers or fear of blowing speakers! I know it’s something I’m considering for my next iteration of my set up… expect a set up update nearer the time of the new album… Thanks again for the comment and for your continued support of my music and channel. I really do appreciate it. Thanks Gavin
@@gavinforbesmusic5164 for sure! Our new rink will be opening next month! ECHL Tulsa Oilers bought an old Macys and made it into their new facility. 2 sheets of ice!! It's called WeStreet Ice Center in Tulsa, check it out. My son plays for the Jr Oilers and I'm in the beer league and that will be our new spot too. So stoked! Cheers and rock on man!
Only Six strings Gav???! I’ve Eight y’know! 🤣 Actually really interesting about the differences there. Agree totally about its versatility. Just pull the frets out, Jaco style! Instant fretless! Yes you can have sympathetic drones, and make it work, I have always used them. Takes a lot of practice to NOT mute the drone. Enjoyed this exposition. Also that Mela me track I like a lot and can see why now. 👍 Never twigged that the Whichita line man had a bass solo! Probably why I like it. I can hear it now! 🙄 🤣👍👊😎
Anno right! Need to up my game! 😂 yeah the versatility is everything to me. Did consider doing a jaco but also love having the fretted as well… guess just need more basses! 😂 Yes totally! controlling drones and muting when you want or not muting the things you do want to hear while maintaining control is so important. I actually think muting control is the most important technique for us bassists! Totally agree 👍 Glad to hear you like the melomanie track, that is one in particular happy with so happy to hear it. Thanks! Yeah that bass solo is why I love it as well haha tho having to play it live was one of the scariest performances of my life! 😂 Thanks again for the support Ant! Really appreciate it! Thanks Gavin
Haha yeah it’s not a common one is it. Despite being in Scotland, I grew up on American sports and have been a massive Tampa Bay Lightning fan since I was young. And as a result that spread into everything else. So you’re looking at a Scottish Lightning, Buccaneers and Rays fan. 😂
. @gavinforbesmusic5164 Most people outside the US wear either NY or LA thinking its the city they have no idea it's they are baseball teams.BTW my team is the Chicago cubs
@hifijohn that’s so true, I’ve definitely seen that. Going to games (all sports, not just baseball) has always been a highlight for me and my family whenever we have been able to come across, the rays stadium was certainly a fun one to see. Ah cool, the cubs have got to have one of the most loyal fan bases out there, it’s great to see them being rewarded for it in recent years. The curse is definitely lifted! 👍 Thanks again for commenting and for spotting the jersey 👍
