I started playing 6 string bass in the early 1990s. In 2009 I sold my last 5 string bass and settled on playing only 4 or 6 string bass guitars exclusively, and haven't regretted it for a moment. But at the end of the day they are all bass guitars; it really comes down to how well you play it.
I play a 5 because I wanted a low B from the get go. So it was the first bass I ever got. I want try six strings because a lot of the players I'm listening to are playing in that range and I would love to play there. There's something beautiful about that high register.
I think people that make silly statements about basses having more than 4 strings, may only have the creative range in their head of a 4 string. People that like more strings, I think they have a larger range they hear in their head. So they need more strings to get out what they are hearing. Never understood why the hate though.
@@wszystkojedno696 if within the melody in your head is a higher or lower note than your bass can play, how can it not? You can't accurately recreate what you'd like, your creativity has been limited by the number of strings.
Played 4 string from '84-2000, switched to 5 from 2000-2023 then heard someone play a 5 tuned e,a,d,g,c , so I tried it and loved it so much, but missed having the B, so recently purchased my first 6 and can honestly say, my creativity level has grown tremendously over the short period of time I've had it. I love it and regret not doing it years ago. I am also a music creator and highly recommend it to any bass player. I always thought six string was for jazz, soloists. I am not a soloist, but enjoy it for the chords. It's also great, because now I don't have to have a guitarist to accompany me.
I play a 4 string fretless but respect anyone that sounds good on any kind of bass. Ive tried 5 and 6 string basses but I didnt feel comfortable. I play chords and write on 4 string and I sort of like the idea of trying to get as much as I can with less. I also find the deeper tones on a 4 beautiful. But thats my prefrence and to each his own.
I’m not saying you’re wrong to like it, but you can get deeper tones on a 5 string than a 4 string. That’s just facts, and you have access to all of the same tones that are on a 4 string on both of the higher string counts because the same strings are still there. Again, not trying to say your preference is wrong, but some of your justifications were.
Getting my first 6 in a few months and can't wait. If the haters spent as much time practicing as they did hating they wouldn't have time to comment that type of stuff from the gigs they'd be getting
After playing a 4 string for a couple of decades, I added a 6 string and found the two biggest challenges to be: • coming up with a strategy for muting (it was more challenging than I’d anticipated and VERY tough to get right for about the first month!) • figuring out what note I was playing at any given time because my brain constantly reverted to thinking of the B string as if it was the E string. (Adding the high C was a breeze to get used to but correctly identifying the notes on that low B on the fly was a bitch!)
One of the reasons I like the 6 string bass is that there's less "acrobatics" involved with certain solo runs where I can stay a lot more in the middle of the fretboard. I have average sized fingers so there's a certain level of comfort with using this technique. And I don't use the six string basses that I own for absolutely everything, as they aren't always necessary depending on the song ... but they are my "go-to" basses for the most part. Great video!
I started playing bass with a four-string bass and granted that is what most people start off with but I never really thought about going into a 6 bass because in the styles of music that I play, especially as a non-soloist bassist; I just needed the bass for more groove and that is why I switch from a four-string to a five-string bass. As I improve with my technique and branching out into more of a soloist, I still have thoughts about purchasing a 6 six but a lot of my favorite soloist as a bassist like Hadrian Feraud or Richard Bona play five-string bass too so I will hold off on getting 6 string for a little bit long but I'll get one eventually.
I picked up a spector NS pulse 6 and I didn't have any expectations at first. I'm typically a 4 string player. I noticed my 4 string skills improved a lot when I started noodling around with the 6. I put the 6 down for a few months because I just didn't know what to do with it. A couple weeks ago I started farting around with the 6 again. I was just playing scales to a back beat, it was rad! It was so much fun being able to hit a "hi c" a couple octaves up.
I play a 6 string bass as well.. All the reasons u gave all true.. I also love the face that I can have better and me clear sounding chords when using those high note strings
I had a 6 once, gave it out to a friend who did not own a Bass. Incidentally, he told me it saved him once coz he sold it to fund his wedding budget 😳😂 I'm on a 5 Strings Headless, though I wouldn't mind a 6, and I'm thinking about it. I'm not a soloist really, I'm more of a finger style only player. I'm getting to know more about the 5, by tuning it differently to get even lower notes than the B. I'm enjoying the experience/experiment. I wouldn't mind having a 6 though, as an option. Heck, Anthony Jackson is my GOAT 😎
It is a blessing to have the advantage to play a 6-string bass especially if you doing solo work because you have more space and more room to play chord melodies
I play 6 strings because it's like having all i one, i am not even comfortable watching a tutorial of a 4 string bass...one of reasons i like Jermaine Morgan!
I'm interested of Playing a 6 string Bass, I do have a 5 String, but I was thinking and hopefully manifest for a 6 string Bass Guitar 🎸 as my daily instrument
My Sire Marcus Miller M7 6-String should arrive in a few days. So happy and excited. I usually play 5 string (mostly). I own a 4 string, three 5-String and now my 6-String Bass. I play alot of gospel/worship music 🎶 with mostly a 5-String bass. Now I'm stepping up a notch with the 6-String. I'm not a bassist that slide up and down the neck, so the 6-String help me with more strings to play in the local area (if you know what I mean). Thanks again for this video
The band I play in is a dual bass metalcore band(no guitar). My job in the bass is the prove the “normal” bass duties while simultaneously playing the role a rhythm guitar player would do. The other bass player play the fourth string that is distorted. He also provides some traditional baselines but also fills in that space a lead guitar player would normally do. For me playing the six string allows me to write parts that better suit the songs. I also enjoy the added range. In addition with the band I play and the other bass player is tune to standard I am tuned to E0 for that extra low kick in the pants. I’ve tried that tuning in a fourth string and in a five string and for whatever reason it just doesn’t seem to work as well.
I've played 5-strings for 11 years and now really contemplating to go with 6-string or 5-string with EADGC-tuning. I love soloing and often run out of high notes. And same as you, I love having access to the low B, even though I do not use it so often.
I have been wanting a 6 string bass for a while and tomorrow I am finally getting one! I am intrigued by the idea of tuning the highest string to B instead of a C. then I got the Low B and High B and can start getting guitar patterns into my brain.
I've done 4, 5 and 12 string bass. It really does matter what the song calls for. I've always liked the 6 but haven't plunked down the cash for one yet.
In church I play 6 string because we only have ,a drummer, organ player, and my self on bass and there's a lot of space in the music which also allows me to be more creative and hit those low flat keys that gospel organist like to play
i used to play 4 for several years, then moved to 5 strings and never came back. but i still play 4s when i have no other options in terms of gear. for me, the difference is when i play 4 i tend to base on the area close to the nut then go up as needed, but with 5s i tend to base my playing on the middle ground on the fretboard then i can go 'up' the nut area or 'down' near the pickup area. i like 5s more as it gives me that kind of versatility of movements in my playing.
I play a 6-string too. But I don't like the low B string, so I tune mine E A D G C F. That gives me great bass sounds, but the C and F strings can give me some good guitar like sounds.
I just discovered you and your videos. I liked and subscribed. I love the way you communicate, always respecting the players on the “other side”. Gotta search ur music. Ur awesome.
Hi Jermaine! I started playing with the 4 strings bass like most people. I use my bass for basic exercices and by playing the SEBENE rythm wich is a typical rythm we use to play in my home (I am from Kongo-Kinshasa). The first reason why I play the 6 string bass is : I love Gospel music very much. I saw most Gospel bass player using the 5&6 strings basses, so I decided to learn about thoses basses. I can't say I was upset by discovering the 5&6 string basses. In the end of 2013, I discovered the video of Donnie McClurkin and his bassiste, this is what made me to chose my actual bass (I ow an Ibanez BTB676) and I am planning to buy another 6 string.
I'm actually looking into good 5 or 6 string basses and an Ibanez BTB bass was one of the things that I thought about buying, do you have feedback about their BTB basses that you could give as a personal owner of one
@@andrephanor8479 I know that Ibanez makes several bass models, but I prefer the BTB series for 2 reasons. The first reason wich made me buy this bass is his esthetic look. I fall in love with it without trying the model in a music shop. I like the monorail bridge and the 3 band EQ of the BTB with BARTOLINI pickups and the medium contour. The second reason is the ergonomic. Most of 5&6 strings bass of BTB series have a 35" inch scale, wich gives more clarity to the low B string. It has a wide and huge neck with a good string spacing, wich is good for the Slap technic. I don't have issues with it because my hands are big enough to play that bass although I am a tall girl, 😁😁😁. The bass is massive and heavy, so I bought a large leather strap for it.
I'm a drummer that plays bass and other instruments and just like you said it opens up doors to guitar & keyboard chords thus giving you more flavor within the same fret board range. As you play you'll find that you have multiple modes at your finger tips with a two mode range without running down the neck. Thank you for this video I switched to 5 string long ago this video confirmed that I need a 6 string. Adam Byrd Philly Musician former drummer for First Choice and many others
I've been playing a 4 string bass for a long time now. Now, I feel the need to purchase another bass because I've always wanted that low B string in my arsenal. Honestly a 6 strings bass was never an option to me that's why I only played 5 string basses at the store. But this video made me think that even though I don't have the appetite to do solo or play chords on my bass now, for sure eventually It'll grow on me. That's why I purchased a 6 string bass! Thanks for this vid helps alot.
First off let me say that i actually do play 7 but i still play my 6 and what made me go to 6 is when i was @ a gig and my 5 that i had at the time stopped working out the blue and a friend of mine who also plays who just so happened to have a 6 let me use his and i fell in move with 6 strings emeditely and got one of my own soon after. A little bit of a twist though... I have mine tuned in A That's the way I played my 5 so why not do it to my 6 and 7 Very Very fun I have to say
I agree with you. The thing for me is the lower the string number the harder it is to create which is good too.. I know ppl who use 2 string basses. Imagine having to play teen town on that. Lol. Keep killin em bro.
I’m in love with your playing. I pray to advance in my playing abilities. I only have one bass and it’s a 6 string. I’m so used to playing a 6 string i don’t even want to get a 5 string yet lol. My next bass will also be a 6
One of the key points to me is 4,5 & 6 string have their own different overall tonalities. Each may be more or less appropriate depending on the need of the music.
That surine bass is amazing...i purchased my 1st ibanez 1996 ibanez sr506 bass since then..i have bought 5 more 6 string basses..i can't put the 6 string bass down..
Great vid man! Still highly relevant a couple years later. Grabbing a 6 string this month coming. Never much played a 4. Started on 5 and can't give up that B. I like the sound and also being able to stay in the box more often rather than all the running around. I don't feel 6 will be to much of a change except the width of the neck of course. This will be a multi-scale which MIGHT take a little getting used to. I have been a keyboard (synth/piano) player for near 60 years but only played bass a year or so (trying to play serious rather than just goofing around). It has been an absolute blast and I seem to picking up fairly fast. Of course I practice several hours a week (near 20) and I have years of music theory behind me that helps. Can't wait to jam on that 6. Thx for the video, even more pumped than before! "Chuck"
I think a lot of guys go for the high-c 5 string instead of 6 string for weight purposes. The weight difference between a 5 and a 6 can be dramatic. I love 6 string too but I HAVE to play them sitting down.
Understood. Yeah, I think it ultimately comes down to preference. Not all 6 strings are that heavy. Most gospel guys just like having the option of those lower notes as well as the c string...
Jermaine Morgan - Bass Lessons I also like 6 string and I would use it all the time but for me, weight has always been an issue. More importantly, balance. I’ve played more basses than most and I’ve played some with nasty neck dive and that just takes all the fun out of playing for me. What I’d ultimately like to have is something like Daniele Camarda’s 6 string. 31 inch scale with good balance and not a ton of neck dive. 3 inches worth of wood makes a big difference in weight and balance. But it looks like you’ve found something that works for you. I noticed immediately that there’s no wasted space along the length of the bass which you don’t find on a lot of basses. The whole scale length is the whole bass, no extra wood behind the bridge. Looks like an excellent instrument.
I was a staunch 4 string player. But about 11 years ago, a really nice 6 kinda fell in my lap for a very cheap price. I bought it with the idea of selling it for a profit. But when I started playing it at home, I found that I was really enjoying it. I'm now primarily a 6 string player. I still love my 4s, but as I often now say. There's nothing I can play on a 4 that I can't also play on a 6. The opposite can't be said.
Mannnnnn I love the amazing intro and funk ! I’ve been researching getting a 6 string to add along with my 5 string . This definitely helped reinforce why I NEED a 6 string :) I automatically had to sub- love the energy my guy ! 👏🏼👏🏼
I play a 5 and going from 4 to 5 I got lost a lot but got comfortable pretty quick. I barely touch my 4 string anymore. I'm going to make that move to a 6 eventually because I want the challenge.
I just got a 6 string myself even though I'm a beginner. I come from a drumming background so this is all new to me, but love the idea of extending your range. We always have room to learn, so I figure the added C will open more for creativity, and that's where magic happens. The ONLY thing that really scares me about it is I feel like my fingers may be a tad short. I would recommend people giving it a try.
This is me, except for the short fingers. Been drumming since childhood and always liked bass - J5, Chaka, EWF, JB, et al. I bought a used 4 string and saw a great used deal on a lovely 6 string LTD D-6. I haven’t been confident on which instrument to prioritize my learning/practice time, but I think it will be toward the 6-string. Have fun Fellow Drummer! Grace and Peace 😊
You know whats crazy, I go back and fourth between my P bass (4 strings) and my Ibanez BTB (6-Strings) all the time. I love them both. For some reason I never took to a 5 string. I'm stuck on 4 or 6 depending on the gig.
My 6 string Ibanez resonates so much that I usually play it unplugged when I practice lol. I’ guessing it’s because there’s so much more wood than my other basses. But my normal 4 string and short scale sound dead if they’re not plugged in. Also, I’ve gotten so accustomed to the jumbo frets, that anything smaller than a 6 feels a little too cramped. I have such a hard time when I pick up my guitar because it feels so small.
So I play a 6 string bass . When I play live mostly... I play at church in a lot of different keys and having the low b and high c makes things a lot easier.. traditionally I have always played a 5 string for the same reason that I now play the 6 string. All that being said I still tend to play one of my 4 strings when I'm home practicing but honestly that has more to do with what I am practicing than anything else .. ive really been working on my slap chops in the last 6 months or so, I love my 6 string but playing slap bass on it is not only difficult but to noisy. I'm not saying it can't be done well I'm just saying I can't 😅
Thanks for this video! I'm buying my first propper bass in a week or so, and I've been a devout 5 string guy. (Dat low B) And I was in the music store today looking at different basses when a 6 string caught my eye. I tried it out and I'm honestly scared 🤣 slightly overwhelming at first, but genuinely captivating as an instrument. This video has helped me a bunch already. I'll probably be a 6 string bass guy this time next week. Thanks again.
Great tone, bass and play ing. It`s amazing how almost 40 years later since Anthony Jackson promoted it and John Patitucci elevated it, the 6 string bass is still a taboo topic among "modern"" bass players. It`s like keyboardists discussing if the brand new Nord Stage should even be used instead of an 80`s Casio synthesizer. Ridiculous.
Personally, I have no idea which number I prefer, but the 6-string has the same number as the normal electric guitar (I think it’s called am “Air Guitar”), so that number of strings on a bass feels like a more natural concept to me than 4 or 5 strings...
IMO everyone should start on a 4 and get the fundamentals down. Friend had a gig and his only bass, a 5 string, was in the shop for an emergency repair. He asked if I could take the gig last minute, I offered to let him use my 4, and he said in all seriousness he couldnt play a 4 string, he learned on a 5 and never touched anything else. Know the fundamentals before you worry about the other strings.
I own a 4 string 2 5s and a 6. I feel most at home on a 5. That gospel culture is real and I also detune to Bb. I feel restricted at times on the 4 because I like to do a lot of voice impersonation on bass and depending on what key the song is in you can run out of real estate on a 4. I got the 6 for chording. But overall playing I find that I do not like how thin that last string is. Plus if they real get to the shouting I find I cramp on the 6. The 5 gives me everything although agin I can run into some limitations when wanting to chord a higher voicing or get a higher range on voicings but 98% of what I need I can get out of my 5s.
To me, the six string is like a swiss army knife. I can play all kinds of music with it. And I don't get the dislike of 5 and 6 string. Maybe it is because I am very open minded to music and enjoy a variety of styles. Plus there are a lot of great players with a six in their arsenal of basses.
LOL...........Its 10th Aug 2021 when Im seeing this video, but it'll be about a year before I venture into 6 string territory. Im having issues with the gap between strings in terms of a 5 string to a 4 string. I try licks on the 4 string 1st then try it of the 5 string. I find it easier in the 5 string.......
nicely said. 6 string setup gives you mice tones, more options and ease of play. good enough reasons add 2 more strings. let me disclose my fellow country man wasted 34 minutes of my time by saying he is playing a 6 strung bass because it looks good and low b works as a stopper for e like the other strings. i am too ashamed to mention where we are from but he got me so ticked off i had to mention it here where things are making sense.
So I am looking to buy a six string and maybe I can get some advice. I want the six cause I love electronic music and I want to use the low B to reproduce heavy low sliding bass drops. I also want the high string to reach past the lower interval limit for chord voicing. Can I expect to be able to do this with a six string or should I look at other options?
I watched your other video on being afraid of the six-string, and that really made me change my thinking about extended range instruments. I'm a guitarist, and I definitely enjoy extended range guitars, such as 8 strings. People often have the same mentality when it comes to the 8 string, so I really appreciate someone promoting having an open mind!
Don’t mind the haters. There is no rule book on creativity. Play with as many strings as you need, use a pick, slap, tap, use capos, etc. to create the music you want to play. They say Jaco only needed four strings. Well, he died young. He was an innovator so he may have tried extended range basses had he lived longer. His son plays a 6 string. So we’ll never know. I have 6string basses, 8 string double octave, fretless and 4 strings. I still enjoy my 4 stringers. Why take a six string to a Blues gig? They all have their purpose. Don’t pay any mind to the music communists.
I respect the 4s 5s and 6s. You can't go wrong with any of em. But at least for now, I lean more towards the 4s and 5s, and I respectfully don't have a strong enough reason to go for the 6s yet. Not saying it isn't good; it obviously is. I've seen YOU tear things up with a 6s. But for me, I haven't reached a point where it's worth committing to exploring it yet. For me, 4s and 5s are tied for my favorite. A 5s has everything you need, but a 4s has _all_ you need. I like my 5s because it has a LOT of workable depth and maneuverability, so playing in church is a breeze. But I like my 4s too, because its "limits" force me to evolve as a player. I like the "4 string challenge" as I call it, which is essentially how do you match the power of a 5s without the depth it has? The 6s, at least to me, is the key to ultimate power. Chording and melodic ability get boosted significantly. And with added comfort in the higher registers if needed................But I haven't reached a point where that ultimate power is worth it, especially for the work you gotta do to adjust to it. I gotta get used to my G string having an extra wall I gotta get past to pop it. I like to be able to go straight to my G string, because of pops and dead pops; that string is an invaluable tool to me. And I wanna keep my comfort.
I found an amazing unused Peavey 6-string for $250 at the flea market. I had already bought a 5 string recently, but the offer was so good I couldn’t say no.

My man playing the bass and also keyboard, guitar all through the bass. You can do drums and percussion too. Best instrument ever!
Solo players "ROCK!"
I want a 6 for fun. I’ve been playing a 5 string in a band for years though
You’re killing me!!! I’m waiting my first 6 to be delivered and I just found this video. 😭😂
Samee 😣
When I heard Michael pipoquinha I needed one and finally im here restlesswaiting for my first 6 string to get delivered sometime today
Trying the six again
I play a 6-string too. But I don't like the low B string, so I tune mine E A D G C F. That gives me great bass sounds, but the C and F strings can give me some good guitar like sounds.
Cool 😎! That’s different
I have mine tuned in A
That's the way I played my 5 so why not do it to my 6 and 7
Very Very fun I have to say
Personally, I love how the six sings to the heavens. Even unplugged. But I find slap & pop to be most comfortable on a 5 or 6.
I just splurged and bought a Bongo six string. This video is getting me hyped up! 👏🏼
Thank you for this
I just got a 6 string myself even though I'm a beginner.
Man!!! That Surine is an amazing guy work of art
Ive got a six string cuz i like the melodic sound, makes the bass have more depht in it
I love 6 string bass dude
So do I
Nice playing and what a bass!? Surine
I want them chords. They sound so good on a 6 string.
i play 6 . love 5 in band situation or 4 cos it s good fun, so is 6 .
I love the 6 but I think I need to go up to seven. I could go fully guitar on my bass.
Very awsome bro I loved that. I want one soon..
Thank you for this positive sharing
You know whats crazy, I go back and fourth between my P bass (4 strings) and my Ibanez BTB (6-Strings) all the time. I love them both. For some reason I never took to a 5 string. I'm stuck on 4 or 6 depending on the gig.
Those are my same thoughts about 6 string bass 🙏
How are his E, A and D string not ringing around when he is not muting at all? Thats the hardest part about the 6 string
I've yet to master four strings. But I'm giving it hell trying
Don’t let “mastery” get in your way of exploring your options. There’s always a time and place to see what’s out there
I love this mambo fish bass!
People who limit themselves to only for string bass guitar because they don't want to work a wider range fretboard and make music 😊
(Dat low B)
And I was in the music store today looking at different basses when a 6 string caught my eye. I tried it out and I'm honestly scared 🤣 slightly overwhelming at first, but genuinely captivating as an instrument. This video has helped me a bunch already. I'll probably be a 6 string bass guy this time next week. Thanks again.
Opens a world of options
Great tone, bass and play
ing. Ridiculous.
Love the low b tried a six string lust was not for me love to hear you on the six
So, are you enjoying your bass?
To me, the six string is like a swiss army knife. I can play all kinds of music with it. And I don't get the dislike of 5 and 6 string. Maybe it is because I am very open minded to music and enjoy a variety of styles. Plus there are a lot of great players with a six in their arsenal of basses.
But what Jermaine if you opened a music school, and bought bass guitars for beginners, which would you buy between 4,5 & 6 and why
That bass is siiiiiiiiic the bass playing is 🔥 thank you 🙏
LOL...........Its 10th Aug 2021 when Im seeing this video, but it'll be about a year before I venture into 6 string territory.
Im having issues with the gap between strings in terms of a 5 string to a 4 string. I try licks on the 4 string 1st then try it of the 5 string. I find it easier in the 5 string.......
What's your thoughts on 7 string basses dude.👍
nicely said.
I had a six string sx from rondo but I sold it a few years ago, thinking about getting Ibanez sr606 or the sire 6 string to replace it
So I am looking to buy a six string and maybe I can get some advice. I want the six cause I love electronic music and I want to use the low B to reproduce heavy low sliding bass drops. I also want the high string to reach past the lower interval limit for chord voicing. Can I expect to be able to do this with a six string or should I look at other options?
How do I get that attack on my G and C string? Mine sounds like a guitar!
Has a bit more to do with the wood and string height
Cool! What do you use for background drums? Thanks.
I LOVE a 5 string because you have access to the low fundamentals of E flat and D flat and a fat low C.
I love those name drops at the end. lol
Awesome my brother 👏👏👏. I loved your intro
Damn that was sweet
i'm not gonna lie, i got mine because of thundercat, and now i'm happy and trying to make noise rock with it
What brand of bass is this and where can I get one of these specifically?
Please what bass brand is your 6 string?
Surine. Nice
What's the name of the looper you use?
I found an amazing unused Peavey 6-string for $250 at the flea market. I had already bought a 5 string recently, but the offer was so good I couldn’t say no.
Did you buy the Peavey bass?
@@Scarabee80 yep
@@JakeRosen635 how do you feel by playing it?
What kind of six is that you’re playing
I'm predominantly a guitar player (been playing 50 years), who has recently got into bass playing a lot more.
Ive already got a 4 string and a 5 string bass, but...
Ive just bought a 6 string fretless! 😨
I must admit...I'm a bit scared.
😁
You got it! Go for it
Can I ask what are the body and neck woods of this bass , thank you , you and the bass sound fantastic !
