What 2024 Taught Me As A Musician / Basses, Album Releases, Mixers, Rig Builds & More!
#fretlessbass #modularsynth #aemodular
Welcome to this week's video all about what this year as a musician has taught me. From releasing music (including physical releases) to playing live and using new gear. It all taught me some valuable lessons moving forward. Especially as I continue to dip my toe into the (very new to me) waters of being an artist.
I hope you enjoy the video!
See you all again in 2025!
And now for the shameless plugs...
A selection of the songs is now available for download on Bandcamp as the 'Live From The Cutting Room Floor EP' here : gavinforbesmusic.bandcamp.com/album/live-from-the-cutting-room-floor

    Great video mate and thanks from South Australia. Basically I'm a die-hard 4 string P bass nut but I am very fortunate to have an amazing missus who wanted to support my habit of bass playing and expanding my expressiveness in bass, that she bought me a lovely Cort A6 just because I wanted to find out what I could achieve with it. What it allows, encourages for me, is thinking differently in terms of what I can add to a tune. By this I mean I now have the ability, for one example, to strum power chords using that C string to 'fatten' up the whole sound of a smaller group with perhaps only one guitarist. The ability to work across the fretboard seems to also give me flexibility to experiment, dare I say improvise, with basslines again to enhance the sound of a smaller group. I can't say it definitely does do this but it certainly feels like it to me. With regards to muting, I address that in a couple of ways. Primarily, my right hand (plucking) technique is something like Steve Harris from Iron Maiden where I don't anchor my right hand with my thumb, rather the heel of my right hand. This gives a really mobile floating thumb availability when crossing the strings that I have managed to incorporate into the right-hand part of my muting which helps to dampen any sympathetic string vibration. I also use a string wrap (this might upset the purists, but I need all the help I can get) at the other end of, particularly, the B string because I can!! All in all I have found a decent result doing this and ironically I think the muting 'problem' is actually an advantage of the six string, it makes you more conscious and mindful of the requirement. I am really only a very rank amateur but these things do help me in adapting between my 4 string, 5 string Yamaha and the 6 string and each of these brings different feeling when I'm playing. I like it a lot.

    So much in one year Gavin. This is such an interesting video. Just to look back at the road you travelled. We should all take stock every now and then. Sometimes the flood of ideas swamps the completion process. Patrick and I compiled another book in September, some of the learning from this ripple with yours. Collaboration Delegation Finishing getting over the difficulties and disappointments the hard work that seemingly moves a project only by millimetres and the total joy of creating and promoting something. Gavin a gigantic year and it looks like next year will be even bigger. I really enjoyed hearing your story. I really enjoy your journey. Thank you for everything you do.

      Thank you Martin, that really does mean a lot. Especially since you’ve been along for so much of this journey that really started to take shape over the lockdown - it’s so crazy to think of how much has changed since then. That’s awesome, please let me know how that process continues and when it’s out! You’re so right, the journey can be so difficult with times where it feels like you never take a step forward. But it’s so worth it for the love of it and the end result in whatever form it takes. Thank you and for all your support and kind words. It really does mean so much! Thanks again Gavin!

    Really great video again mate. What did I learn this year? I learned actually the sometimes good enough is exactly that good enough. Just because we can edit and edit and edit...but actually....sometimes just finishing the track is better than not at all. I also learned that the Digitone II might be the best groovebox I've ever used. I learned that I am now obsessed with pedals. I also recognised that not everyone gets to or can make music from the blank page and that is actually a pretty special realisation. Think about it? Before you wrote that melody, or before you published that album...NONE OF IT EXISTED BEFORE and it came from you. Absolute magic!

      Thanks bud! And those are some great points you’ve made there! Especially the one about things being good enough. That’s one I am learning myself and embracing with the new mixed only recordings. And that’s a fantastic point about nothing existing before we make it. Hadn’t considered that! And have heard great things about the digitone II - may have to check that out! Thanks again for watching and commenting bud! Is much appreciated!

    Hi Gavin, I really enjoyed this video (which I listened to on my morning walk today). There are some really good insights which are probably worthwhile noting for any artist, especially: using the KISS principle when designing your setup. I love how you keep combining the bass with the sounds of the AE. It's all very inspiring so please keep up the good work!

      Thank you Carsten! That really means a lot. You’re so right, the KISS principle is really valuable! Learned that the hard way myself, but was certainly a valuable lesson for me. Thank you, honestly it’s becoming my go to pairing. Love the way they can combine and the possibilities seem endless. Even more so with all the new modules coming out. And honestly, I wouldn’t be doing this without your amazing videos on the AE format! I have learned so much from those! Thanks again, your support is really appreciated! Thanks Gavin

    How did I miss this video? We all know the bass player is important in a band. They do something around the drums and if they don't do it the sound will be sort of not right. This is all about what that bassline is. And how it can stand alone. Or maybe this is about that fretless voice. The living oscillator at the front of the chain. Gavin you look like you really worked hard and it really speaks for itself. 41Hz live. I love this track so much but had no idea how hard it looks to play.

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164 Місяць тому

      Don’t worry about it, I have missed loads on here myself! That is a great description of what the bass can do, and I really appreciate the kind words about the bassline on 41 hertz. Live that term “living oscillator” - especially with how I’ll be processing the bass next year! It’s interesting actually ( at least to me haha) but 41Hertz probably too the most work to translate the original to the new electronic duo set. The original bass was actually 2 different layers. One clean slap for the low notes and one high up with effects for the melody. Combining the two was tricky but also so much fun to figure out. It’s now one of my favourites to play live! The hardest part believe it or not is controlling the wah pedal. Making it sound melodic while playing - I’m learning! Haha Thanks again for your very kind comment and your continued support. It means so much! Thanks Gavin

    Nice run-through, interesting to hear how you use the system! First track in the intro, the synth arpeggio reminded me of Frankie Knuckles - Your Love (or Animal Collective's interpolation of it in 'My Girls'), cool stuff! Fun to see the live footage inbetween :D

      @gavinforbesmusic5164 Місяць тому

      Thank you Carsten, that really means a lot! Especially from someone so important to the AE world. There are other users doing way more elaborate things with this system, but have to say this works so perfectly for my set up, there’s just no way I could imagine playing live without it. It’s perfect! And even then, there’s so much more I want to explore with it as well. Thanks again for your support, and for all your videos which helped when developing my rack. Thanks again Gavin

  • @loopinnerthe
    @loopinnerthe Місяць тому

    Gavin. Thank you for explaining your AE modular to us. This was so understandable and it just makes sense of all the individual parts you have been talking about. With modular comes enormous freedom. I guess its also freedom to buy too many modules and waste precious time tinkering. I think you have the self discipline and the direction to avoid these pitfalls. I always joke that an IT nerd like me would never be able to fill a stadium show with a demonstration of an operating system patch resolving some vulnerability in the name resolution services. Your whole setup and migration from a bassist that likes an effect or two into a modular and midi enthusiast has been organic and is absolutely fascinating. But the crowd just want to hear some great music, kind of a shame that people aren't particularly curious about the "how" of things. I don't think that whilst you have strap over your shoulder and VANS on your feet you can ever do away with tapping on a pedal whilst standing on a stage. ( I just had to watch Hendrix playing Voodo Child and he didn't have many pedals but he sure used them to great sonic and dramatic effect) But it does make real sense to compress the pedals into a modular format. Great vid as ever. Thanks for sharing. (When I run out of my own projects I would love to dip my toe into this world....)

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164 Місяць тому

      Thanks for the kind words Martin, I really appreciate it. And I’m glad it was interesting. You’re right, it brings so much freedom. Even with programmed sequences, there’s still so much room to improvise. I’m sure there is an audience for that! It’s interesting, you’re so right that most people don’t notice (or care) how the sounds are made. What has blown my mind is that there are people, even local to me, who are interested in seeing what is used on stage and care about the gear side. Was a pleasant surprise! And you are so right, there is no chance I’ll ever retire the pedals - or foot control. Even for the modular effects, I’ll be using a midi foot controller/ expression pedals to switch and control the modular chain. Thanks again for your constant support. It means so much! Thanks again Gavin

    Interesting to hear how you use the Ae. Adding the Grunge/phaser/delay to the bass FX will sound cool Out of interest what noise gate do you use? I'm using an inline audio loop noise gate cheap as chips but think it takes away some of the good noise too so looking to try others.

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164 Місяць тому

      Thanks! Have to say though, nothing compared to your set up! So cool! Yeah think the bass rack is gonna take over the pedalboard a little! Haha plus with the new Wonkystuff Ring mod, plus some other things I’ve noticed from tangible waves & other third parties too (BF synths in particular) - so much this rack could do for my bass rig! Oh really? Well despite that, your videos always sound great! But I understand your point, some can clamp your sound more than others and remove detail in the process. I’ve been using the Boss NS2, but I’ll be honest it’s not the best. There are other noise gate pedals way better these days. So I’ll also be investigating that - including a potential rack option. So I’ll keep you posted when I do. I will say, the big difference I’ve noticed is trying the separate outputs. Even just using the stock Ableton gate on seperate outputs from the AE worked way better as the gate can track the audio better with just one source. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it! Thanks Gavin

    • @maydonpoliris

      @gavinforbesmusic5164 thanks Gavin appreciate you saying that and about the vids too. For those I use audacity to take out the noise and don't use the inline filter. Live is a different story though. By the way it's really cool how you include the Ae in your live gigs. Have been wondering how this was done and what you used so it was cool to see your explanation. I'll check out that noise gate filter you mentioned even if to compare to those in the local shop. Good tip about the individual outs too. I will try that out as well thanks mate I look forward to more vids and enjoy building the bass rig, like you say so much to choose from now it's so good and imagine what's next 🤯🙂

      Ah I see, sounds great! Thank you, that really means a lot. It’s certainly not as elaborate as how some of the other AE users set theirs up, but I honestly couldn’t imagine not having this as the third band member now! Oh for the noise gate, check out the noise gate pedal shoot out Ryan Bruce / fluff did. Both of mine are in it ( the TC electronic iron curtain and Boss ones) and you’ll see how they sound. The sentry seems amazing but not tried one! I have a DBX rack one I’ll hopefully check out soon too. So I’ll keep you posted. Thanks! Started this week and it’s a lot of fun even at this stage. Working on the midi foot controlling next week which will be fun. Feel free to suggest anything you can think of! Thanks again, can’t wait to see what you do next! Thank Gavin

      I get your point but to me they are very much different pedals for different things. Synth bass is a broad scope of sounds. This is more glitchy 8 bit. No presets but arguably more of an on the fly “performative” pedal. Much more experimental. The C4 on the other hand is massively powerful pedal and definitely a full on synth pedal. Just depends on the sound you’re after.

    Gavin....Thanks for putting this together. You have really opened my eyes to the Wonkystuff gear. I feel like the middle aged biker that thinks they might just get a 600 into the garage without the wife noticing. Next year I am coming along, just for the sheer fun of twisting some knobs. My daughter is a teacher, the accessible guitar has really impressed her. This section of the video is so important, enabling everyone to take part and removing barriers, cant thank those guys enough for going down that route.

      Thank you so much for watching and commenting. That’s such a great analogy if the Wonkystuff modules & the AE format in general. A modular that is so affordable and attainable to the masses. That’s what drew me to it and now it’s safe to say I’m hooked! You would love the event! I’m sure the creativity of the builders alone would be inspiring! And then there’s the seminars too! That’s such a great idea isn’t it! I was so impressed with the accessibility of that instrument. You’re so right, it’s very important, and I’m so glad to see it happening at arcana! Thanks again for watching, commenting and for your constant support. Thanks Gavin

    Thanks for watching my recap of this years Synthfest! I must apologies, It is a noisy and very busy event, so the audio isn't perfect and neither is my filming at times (a few heads chopped). Add into that some more issues (audio issues with my talking parts in particular), this video has been rather tricky to get ready quickly. It's far from perfect, but I hope you enjoy my recap! Thank you! That means a lot. Even on the new album that just came out, the AE Modular plays a massive role (all drums plus a lot of the synth parts). But the bass is still a massive part of it for me. It feels live the vocal for me - really it is my voice. I love the way the bass and modular/ synths pair up. Thank you again for your kind comment. Gavin

  • @loopinnerthe

    I am going to edit this comment more as I spot stuff. The first two tracks are so familiar to me because I made video for them and listened to them many times..and Blockbuster too. The title track is a driving 80's cop movie all over. It's the theme tune Juliet Bravo should have had. How can anyone argue with that slide bass on Cassette Futurism? I think this is still my favorite track at the moment. Age of the Arcade - Do I hear fingers sliding over wire-wound strings? It's so human vs the modular. 79 Blueprint there is a intoxicating drone working away in the background and I only just noticed it. Freeze frame ending has those wonderful choral sounds but I think it needs some vocoder action, if nothing else just doing a count-down. Gavin you have worked so hard on this album, it is packed with treats that I haven't discovered yet. I hope this gets to the ears that really need to hear it.

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment Martin! That’s very true about the three singles, and you did such great videos too! Thanks again for those. It’s funny, I think cassette futurism is probably my favourite too, especially happy with the live version we ended up playing. I’m so glad you caught that on Age of the arcade! In the past I would have cut the string squeaks but I wanted to leave the human imperfections this time where I could. 79 is a different one for me, although it’s a special one. It was written as a tribute to Paul Gardiner, Gary Numans original bass player, a member of Tubeway Army. His playing influenced me more than I could ever really say, so I wanted to do a tribute to that tone and style. Not a numan clone, but for Paul. In fact I almost called it “For Paul”. Freeze Frame was a change of pace for me too. I went for minimal where I could, but I do find your vocoder idea very interesting. Especially as ideas for the next project have started and one of them includes the vocoder! Hopefully you’ll like what I have in mind for that. Thanks again for your amazing support. It really does mean so much to me. Thanks again Gavin

    I own both a P Bass and a J Bass atm, but they're both using roundwound strings. Overall, I'm very impressed on how much treble the J bass was able retain despite having flats on it. I actually really liked how gritty is still sounded when using a pick and some drive. That's personally super important to me, since I play a bit more aggressively. Both of them sounded the same to me when using fuzz though, but I think that's just how fuzz is a lot of the time haha. Great job, man!

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164 6 місяців тому

      Ah nice one, glad you enjoyed it. I too was surprised how much I like a jazz with flats. It’s always the P with flats thing people talk about - but the jazz can be just as cool! Yeah on video the fuzz was similar, but in person I can confirm that fuzz is usually a little smoother on flats. More synthy. Depends on the fuzz & rig though. But generally that’s how it feels to me. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

    Just another tool in the toolbox when called for. Most gigs where other people are paying you to play won’t require it or even want it, but if you’re making your own music and it’s what you need to express yourself then go for it. I have one but very rarely play it for pay and prefer my 4 string as my hands get fatigued on it after a while. You are right about proper muting. That’s a big difference you’ll encounter. Big hands also help. I don’t have those! 😂

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164 6 місяців тому

      You have nailed it! Had to be the right tool for the right gig. Sadly I actually sold that bass but I find the same principle applies to my high C five string & fretless basses. And I also have the same issue, small hands do make it more difficult! 😂 thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @franknobody5965

    To me I was surprised to hear that the J seemed to be stronger in the lows and the P had more punch in the mids. Why is that? I would have expected the opposite 🤔

    • @gavinforbesmusic5164
      @gavinforbesmusic5164 6 місяців тому

      Good question. All of this will vary slightly with different pick ups etc, but all the clips used the same signal path, settings etc. My personal take aways are that I like the mid punch of the p bass - is personally one of the things I love about P basses on the rare occasions I play them. But for me the thick and slightly mid scooped sound of a jazz is my comfort zone. Not perfect for everything, but I like it. I like the way you have described what you heard though, and have to say I agree. I expected the mid punch of the P but the fullness of a jazz with them was a pleasant surprise. Maybe different brands pick ups would be different though… Thanks for watching and commenting! Thanks Gavin

    I was supposed to be writing emails tonight..... ..... then this video popped up. Gavin it seems you had an absolute blast. You know what you are talking about and what to look out for, it feels like you really distilled some pure gold out of your time, I think I would just wander about asking "hey Mr, what does that knob do?" "can I play on your keyboard thing please?" "Does this sound better with reverb?" ...having programmed a few microcontrollers now, I do feel similarly as your itch to play there, to chat to some code developers and how they squeeze so much function out of so little. I would swap the day job for working under the covers on these things tomorrow if I could. Inspiring and great fun video as ever Gavin.
