    NEVER TELL your husband you're planning a divorce if he's abusive. Get the apartment or a place to stay. Get your finances in order. Get everything in order and an order of protection and leave with the kids when he's working.

      I agree with all of the above. Except for leaving while the partner is at work . I think this can create sudden rage.
      If possible, grab a bunch of friends. Lots. Leave with them, but telling him. You don't need to say where. But leave on front of them. With lots of support. Or have police there. Explain the situation and say you need an escort of protection. They will come and assist you out. If you forget things and need to go back home, bring by police also .

      @larsvonrinpoche1229 Nope, trust, leave when he is not home or with a police escort. But it's best not to involve police if you can avoid it, especially if you have children. Leave when he's not at home and not expected to be home. That's when it's safe.

    A friend of mine lived under similar rules by a man named Mohammed as well. He seemed nice, but convinced her to move 1/2 way across the country & once she was separated from her family & friends - the extreme physical abuse started. Same expectations of answering the door & controlling her every move. It took her 10 years to get away & another 3 after he followed her home. He stalked her for 3 years before finally moving to another state after facing prison for harassment. He was convinced he was in the right - HIS PARENTS SUPPORTED HIS ABUSE. It went so deep culturally. Thankfully they didn't have children.

      My father was the kindest, smartest, most conscientious man, I actually don't have the kind of complex feelings about him that I have about every other single person I have ever had strong feelings for, because he has just literally never been abusive, petty, disgraceful.... he truly is just more than anyone would ever expect a mere human to be, he is like a deity, I have nothing but pure love for him, because he's always just been good.
      My mother... who I live more than anything, but who IS a mere mortal, who makes mistakes, is subject to selfishness and badness and all that stuff that can't touch my father.... she left my dad for an abusive narcissist. A man who hated us kids, very obviously, and went out of his way to harm us and our lives in any way he could, all the time.
      The fact that she can and does love someone who goes out of his way to harm the lives of her kids.... I wish I could just turn off the love I have for her, because she doesn't deserve it. We went from being taken care of by her, to having her being in our lives just harming us, doing nothing but harm to us, from middle school or so on.
      It kills me that she isn't better than this. It just, if she were only a more decent person, her own life would be, and have been, so much better, for her and everyone her life touches.
      I don't get how anyone can ever be so lost, but we all have to be better than that, don't bind yourself to an abuser, it makes you as worthless and dangerous as them.... it IS better to have nothing and nobody than to have that, no question..... and you should be MORTIFIED to subject your loved ones to a bad and evil person.... be more than this

    This guy was not only unattractive physically, but he was an abusive and manipulative narcissist. What Elana saw in him is unclear but it was most likely something emotionally connected to her childhood insecurities. It sounds like she was trauma-bonded to a psychopath and once children were involved, it made the relationship so much more complex. She had so much to offer but didn’t value herself. She made herself a victim and protected her manipulative abuser. Poor Elana. She should have heeded the signs on that very first date and walked away. So sad she endured such misery and heartache. Thank you for this very important story. I'm a strong woman, and was trapped in the same psychological spiral for 5 years. Even when he broke my nose, I found myself saying In slipped on the snow. I thankfully eventually left, but the lesson I learned is to never judge why people don't leave. I was that woman, and it was very sobering to realise it! Domestic abuse is so insiduous, and we make so many excuses for ourselves and the other person. This way too common with men being abused too, like the OF model who abused and then finally killed her boyfriend. So thank you for being the voice for victims, and keeping the awareness out there.

They're still in the very beginning of the relationship and the guy is throwing up so many red flags of emotional and mental abuse. I've tried to say something multiple times, but she doesn't see it. Seeing the trajectory of this case is terrifying. I feel so much for Elana and her entire family. It's hard to know how to intervene.

      I have had several good friends who’ve been in abusive relationships, and I’ve always been first on the chopping block, of friends they are forbidden from associating w/. I guess I give Take No Shit vibes.
      But I’ve always done what I described above, and it does work pretty well to keep the door open, bc many people don’t speak up or reach out, bc they can’t bear the thought of being judged, even more than they already have been. So the most important thing, IMO, is to make sure they know how you feel, and that you will welcome them unconditionally whenever they are ready

Then a while after that I found out why he was treating me that way, he was cheating on me with my brother's ex-wife and she was really skinny, she only weighed like 100 pounds. After we got divorced I found out that he had cheated on me for 6 of the 8 years we had been together. It's called trauma bonds. I was with my ex for over 14 years. He systematically broke me down & was able to chip away at every aspect of my being until at the end he could've had me questioning if the sky was pink. They destroy your sense of self worth, take away your support systems, freedom to practice religion, question every dime you spend, every phone call you make is questioned & an argument until you just stop taking them. I was so brainwashed it took years after being out of the relationship to see just how twisted it really was & for the fog to lift. I've been out for almost 6 years now & I'm still having daily "aha" moments of how he messed with my head & distorted my reality. I am an educated woman & come from money. That didn't matter. In fact that helped him in his game to control me because he used those things against me, often throwing them in my face. Narcissists are master manipulators & know EXACTLY what to say to hook you because at the beginning of the relationship during the love bombing stage they've done their intell & gotten all their ammo so they know exactly what they need to say to you to cut the deepest because you felt comfortable with them & showed them your whole hand.

I struggle with social anxiety and major depressive disorder so it was not hard for him to manipulate me. 2.) I was unable to financially support myself at the time. 3.) When I called my parents for help, they made me feel like the abuse was my fault. I didn't feel like I had anyone else I could turn because if my parents thought it was my fault, I was sure everyone else would, too. 4.) He would love bomb me. He would buy me gifts, tell me how beautiful I was and swear he would never do it again. I was so beat down mentally and emotionally that I believed him every time. If you haven't been in that situation yourself, I can understand why it is hard to believe someone would stay. Hopefully you will never find out first hand.

One of the girls took me to oneside and made melisten to what I was saying. Thats when it made sense what i needed to do. I spoke to a solicitor, we got to court the next day. He had to move in with his parents. I stayed that night with a friend and my son stayed with a different person. (If he found me he wouldn't find my son). He had the time to get what he needed without there being any chance of things escalating. That was more than 30 years ago. I have never regretted what action I took not once. I just needed that one friend to make me listen to myself and they supported me thru that action. If you want to stay with an abuser that’s your prerogative, if you can’t find it in you to leave for whatever reason, again, your prerogative. HOWEVER, when you bring children into this world it’s no longer your life/your prerogative. You have an obligation to those kids to get them out of an abusive household, period, end of story! No child deserves to have that type of behavior modeled in front of them!

    • @sarahissersohn5495
      @sarahissersohn5495 3 місяці тому +21

      Cool, but what about when they threaten to kill your children, the second you leave? A lot of courts have mandated continued contact which can keep the person trying to leave, and their kids, extremely vulnerable. My point is that it’s not always clear what the actual safest course of action is, especially when the most physically dangerous time is shortly after a person leaves the abusive relationship. IE, more physically dangerous than when they are appeasing their abuser in order to survive, and in order to protect their children from what they see as an even greater danger.

    • @AndromedasLight17
      @AndromedasLight17 3 місяці тому +7

      There are many factors that can prevent this. Often times financial abuse prevents people from leaving. Abusers tend to withold & control money. It takes a person an average of 8 times to leave their abuser whether they have children or not. They threaten to come after you, your kids or your family and receive little to no protection from the law. I wish it was that easy, where people could just leave but, the psychological torture goes deep.

    • @AndromedasLight17
      @AndromedasLight17 3 місяці тому +4

      There are many reasons why. Financial abuse & witholding money is one of the reasons. Psychological torture goes deep. Abusers will threaten to come after you, your children & family. Unfortunately, until better protective laws are put in plscing giving victims of abuse real protection from their abusers, not much will change. Im obsessed that you're sponsored by Steph and Derrick!! I found you by seeing a video of yours and the comments were pitting you and she against each other because there's nothing toxic women live more than pitting two women that are great at something against one another. I defended her and I fell in love with your style that day. I adore both of you and im so glad you've continued to thrive 🥰👌🏽

    I can’t believe you’re covering this one! I worked at this hospital downtown Toronto, and knew this case and the surgeon very well. He was totally known for his positive bedside manner… but it was creepy… definitely sociopathic. I heard through the rumour-mill that the suitcase her body was found in actually belonged to her mother. There was also a significant issue of dealing with the complaints from patients that he had operated on after the murder. Such a tragic case… and a loss of brilliant medical talent and skill (the victim - let’s not forget she was equally as talented and brilliant as the surgeon, but her career was clearly stifled by him). Thank you for covering this case.
