The cartridge was a slow burning powder and the games were expelled through a small tube across the "engine starter" turbined that was attached to a gearbox that turned the engine compressor blades. It also had nothing to do with warming the engine as the cartridge exhaust gases never entered. Reached or were used by the actual engine.

Having been a B52 crew member for many years most of this is wrong.
