I remember when you guys pulled up to the property. And there was no road and the first night the road was cut. You were driving around on the road and just tickled pink. I don't think some people realize how far you have come. I'm proud of you. I wish when I was younger I would have had. The courage and the vision to try and create my own life instead of live the life I was dealt.

Same here. One of the firsts I saw was finding your 31.36, stopping to visit Bobble Head as you were headed back to AZ to remodel your camper, selling your things, painting the inside walls on the house before you put it on the market. I watch most all the framily too. But I never commented on videos. I wish I had known you would make more $ on YT. But now I do. ❤❤

Having grown up in a countryside village setting here in the UK, I know where you are coming from, I now live on the outskirts of a large town, Mum and Dad raised Chickens to Hens for eggs and at the end of their laying days they were killed and eaten although they had to be boiled first to make the flesh soft enough to eat, we also bred Rabbits, and one Turkey every year for Christmas, and we once raised a Pig, she was the runt of the litter and would not have survived, dad asked the farmer for it, we named her Suzie and bottle fed her baby powder milk every few hours (mam & dad that is) till she was big enough to feed herself, she was a bacon pig, not a pork one, they are fed differently with special meal type feeds, to produce the best bacon, this we got from the farmer, who by the way was one of the best bacon producers in the UK, My dad was a skiller joiner (woodworker) and was called on many times by the farmers and other villagers in his spare time to do work for them, so there was always a free animals/birds supply, plus money payments, for his work done, that's the way it was back in those days after WW2.

I helped a buddy do the same thing on his goat shed. Only we took the pieces we cut out and put hinges along the tops. So now he can lock them in at night/bad weather. He just pulls them up and hand has a hook that keeps them at 90°, so they have a little "porch" to lay under.

Summer heat is hard on the lettuce, install a garden shade over the area of the lettuce and this will extend your growing season. However a greenhouse will extend the season even further into the year. It's nice to see how well the homestead is progressing

Try a raised garden bed on you hill to deter bunnies. They do make a shade screen for over the strawberries...it will let the light through but not the scorching sun. Ballet tutu netting from the fabric store will let the rain in but keeps the birds (and larger bugs) out.

Hi guys, those strawberries can be put into 13 gallon drums and really well . Your environment is the same as mine in northern AUSTRALIAN east coast . The drum just needs some 4 inch tiers cut in them and bent outward so it looks like a round sky scraper with 4 inch balconies then fill the barrel with compost and good quality SOIL then plant the runners on each balcony also you can move the drums about for best growing conditions; sun ,rain ,storms etc . I put mine in a dish of shallow water to keep crawling insects off them . Always had good crops off mine ,I have 6 drums. Just a thought . Have fun guys. You could probably find the same thing on the internet. 😊😊 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Gary, I know you really love strawberries maybe get a 5 gallon bucket and put some soil in it and take it up on the deck or put it somewhere in the garden there by itself and plant a couple strawberry plants in there and that would probably give you a few to try and see how they work there.🍓🍓🍓🍓😊 I live in a small town and a lot of people take the 5 gallon white tubs and plant them close by so you can baby them as their little treat. I do that with a couple of tomato plants each year I put them on the porch where they can get full sun and I get nice tomato plants just for me is all that I need🍅🍅🍅 I see where you can get strawberry strawberry plants and hang them down from a deck like he would a fern or a house plant. Mel the garden, so I’m pretty well for the hot weather. you are having I would be happy with that garden.😊

Y'all don't have to buy solar panels. When y'all can just buy on for a electric fence at tractor supply. All it is just a box that has the solar panel built-in and the positive and negative terminal for your fence wiring. And believe me it will give ya a electrical shock. And it would be cheaper then what Gary was thinking and planning on doing. The electric fence chargers are only about 30 to 50 bucks for the electric fence.

@@TimothyTate-tc5yk what about at night or a cloudy day. Is there a battery and charge controller. I made a set up I bought a smaller panel for 40 or 50, charge controller for like 15$ on line, battery was the expensive part, and a rubber made and 12v fencer

    • @TimothyTate-tc5yk
      @TimothyTate-tc5yk 2 місяці тому +1

@@flyinryan1986 all solar electric fence chargers has lithium batteries in them. Ya can buy one that day charging or day and night charging. Everything that one needs for charging a electric fence is already built into the solar powered electric fence charger that evening includes the lithium battery. And they range in different prices depending on what which electric fence charger you want. I don't want to be rude but however you either don't know anything about electric fence chargers or you're just asking a stupid question.

My mam used to use to spray old dish water on her plants to stop the bugs they don't like the soap. Doesn't need to be suds just the dirty water I forgot use eggshells around the plant bases aswell most slugs and snail don't like them because they have Sharpe edges crushed and placed in garden around all plants especially cabbages lettuces etc or try comanion planting to keep bugs away
Companion planting is one of the best ways to keep bugs away from your favorite vegetables or flowers. It is an old-age practice that involves growing certain plants together to maximize their benefits and deter pests. This works because some plants naturally repel bugs while others attract beneficial insects.
Here are some popular companion plants and tips on how to use them,
Marigolds: Keep destructive insects away, particularly aphids. French Marigolds even kill the harmful nematodes in the soil. Plant them near potatoes, root vegetables, or other plants that may attract aphids. Furthermore, the bright hues of marigold flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, which promotes overall garden health.
Alliums: Onions, garlic, and chives repel most insects due to their potent odor. Plant them around high-value flowers and crops to keep pests at bay.
Mint: Catnip, spearmint, peppermint, and other mint plants emit a strong scent that repels flies, beetles, ants, mealybugs, and other pests.
Herbs: Basil, oregano, rosemary, and other strongly scented herbs keep mosquitoes, flies, aphids, tomato hornworms, and spider mites away from your garden.
Lavender: This plant has a strong odor and is known for repelling fleas and mosquitoes.
However, you should find companion planting combinations suitable for your region and include them in your garden layout for effective pest control.

When it's that hot strawberrys sometimes need partial shade because they will sunburn. You can put them in special pots
designed for strawberrys and grow them on say a porch environment.
Some lettuce will go to seed like yours have done because lettuce (some varieties) are a ""winter" crop type vegetable.

The goats would always always climb on the roof of there little house 🏠 to be higher than each other. The nanny goats were kept separate in a grassed field. We had to dodge the Billy's to collect the 🥚 eggs or go down the drive.

It's HOT EVERY YEAR IN THE SOUTH! Only the DEGREE OF HOW HOT varies at times along with the HUMIDITY which has been 100% down here in Alabama for the past 5 days. 100% humidity DOES NOT mean its raining, only means the clouds are at 100% capacity and can't hold any more moisture or else it will drop the excess as sprinkles, etc.

For your strawberries, i used to grow them a while back in plant pots, 5litre/10 litre pots. They were the best strawberries i ever grew. Just put a couple of plants in each pot, they don't over crowd the pot, so have plenty of room to grow. I could honestly highly recommend that method.
I will add, that they usually take 2 or 3 years before you start getting bumper yields.

Hi 👋. I think the goat barn is perfect 👍❤️... That sucks that momma won't take care of her babies, it happens sometimes 😞... The garden looks good, I've heard several people saying their peppers didn't do well this year 🤷‍♀️.. instead of transplanting all of the strawberries, I think I would thin them and move only the new shoots. Strawberries produce the second year after planting 👍... Wow Gary, the driveway looks awesome 💪❤️❤️

Great advice Auntie Ann! I think that's what we're gonna do too (with the strawberry plants) I'll pull that sage and bolted lettuce and spread them that way maybe 🤔

I really like how the goat shed is turning out. The coolest part for me, is all the live edge wood that you used to frame it out. Road looks great and I'm sure is a pleasure to drive on now It is good you did it now, with school starting, the bus will have no problem in the afternoons. Wishing you a good work week ahead, and that it is real productive with no snags for a change...right?

Your garden is looking great. I have been watching some channels that are in Amish country and the use of different natural things for pest control. I came from Southern California to Texas, and gardening is totally different. I would encourage you to watch, NOT JUST FARMERS, and SEED AND SPARROW. They have some great insight on a lot of things. I also like ONE ACRE HOMESTEAD (WA) and CALICO ACRES (NC). Everyone is so unique how they go about resolving issues. Once again, I always enjoy watching your channel. Keep up the great work!

The strawberries need to be in their on bed in rows so that they can spread out. Also use a mixture of fish emulsion and water on your garden, but water in the morning with it.

Good evening, if you pick your peppers it may help them to produce more and maybe feed them. It may help with making bigger peppers! The strawberries may need some runners cut and feed to help them!! Great blessings to you all!!!

Research companion plants to see which vegetables benefit from planting next to each other. They do better when they have the right companions. Looking amazing and love your channel!

Mel I think you have the right idea to try the garden bed netting, for both shade and bug deterrent- maybe try it on one bed at a time? Your garden is really doing fine, with the beds being so new and as you figure out what you can grow, etc. it is a process! I just wanted to mention, sometimes I miss something you all may have explained in a video- something strikes me from your video and my mind wanders or the dog wants in so maybe half those questions you’ve already explained may be from folks like me- squirrel- !! Lol. Just hang with us, we ain’t perfect viewers all the time we forget to pause, don’t rewind and yeah sometimes need to skip forward to get through the video so we can make our dentist appt on time 😂

Hi Mel & Gary!! I wanted to mention that at least here in PA strawberries are a seasonal crop. Check what it says about your local area. Our Strawberry season is mainly May & June. Actually I was surprised by your crop as I thought you wouldn’t get many this first year. Just don’t pull them out. They will produce for years. Also all of your hot peppers look so pretty!! You could can them and just eat as a snack. Everything is looking amazing and like everyone else I am anticipating the next step on your home. Take care and stay hydrated!! 💜
