  • In this video I talk about everything off grid living. Water, outhouse, wood heat, shelter, cabins, and more. Much of this I learned the hard way. Hopefully this helps someone who is looking to live a similar lifestyle, and helps them realize this way of life is absolutely obtainable in 2024. #diy #outdoors #homestead

Go to the land auction websites for cheap land. Also tax sales and ask locals who may want to sell a piece of land. You can haul in water at first and then get a well and set up rain harvesting for gardens and animals.
Get an old camper with good appliances to live in while you build a cabin. Build a basic cabin that can have additions built on later and then transfer the appliances, wiring and propane from the camper to the cabin. Propane for OD water heater, cooking and heating with a wood stove backup.
Sawdust composting toilet until you can get a septic system. Small solar power system to start and expand as you have the money.
That is how I went off grid 20+ years ago and still living a very comfortable life with no house payments and no utility bills!

There is a really cool guy who just started a UA-cam channel called Getting Off Grid who is starting his build now and currently working on storage for wood and staying in a tent. He has mentioned that you are his inspiration and using methods that you have shown on your channel. It would be cool to see him build his cabin alongside the series you are planning on doing. You should reach out to him and coordinate the builds together.

Also, if your credit is decent you can finance building materials at Lowes and Home Depot with a no- interest for 12 month promo, thats how I built my place. The God’s honest truth is… Most folks just aren’t cut out for this lifestyle in 2024, as far as the workload is concerned. The idea seems amazing, & most might pull through with clearing the lot & beginning the build, but the fatigue & exhaustion wears in, especially working a day job alongside it. Most realize they miss indoor plumbing, instant hot water, and go crazy swatting insects.
That being said, a few rare people who resemble the old breed of pioneers, farmers and settlers does exist. Including yourself Kyle, you are a hell of a workhorse. I myself purchased a cabin that was sort of a blank canvas for me to put finishing touches on. I “kind of sort of” enjoy modern amenities, from the on-demand tankless water heater, to a new septic tank & drain field, over-the-air TV & cell booster. New laminate & modern appliances have been installed. I live comfortably enough, but even that lighter “improvement” wore me out on top of working the land.
I think one thing you need to stress to newcomers is time management & workload. The “how to off-grid 101” style of content is encouraging but also needs to be realistic.

Back in the late 1800's , my greatgrandpa proved up on a 1/4 section of cutover white pine in northern WI - built a log house with a loft from logs and lumber from his own land. It finally collapsed into the cellar about 1990. My dad grew up in that cabin in the 20's and 30's - no electricity, no running water, just a pump in the yard. I slept in that loft as a kid in the mid 40's to late 50's. It can be done, IF you are determined to do so. Kyles channel is the REAL DEAL!

Great job Kyle! Some things we have done in the past include a gravity-fed water tank for a modern washer with a small generator to keep the wife happy. A sand point well is an inexpensive option for water. Not every place has shallow water levels though and yes definitely filter the water. Food can be costly. We hunt and raise our own meat, but don't forget a garden and learn to preserve your food to keep it without needing power. Lastly, we keep at least two years of wood supply preferably three. This saved me when I got sick over the winter. We never had to think about fuel for heat or cooking. Again, great job!

Good vid Kyle. All good points. A place of one's own. The dream. That's how you start and how you do it on the cheap. You don't have to anymore than the basics. A good chain saw and knowledge of how to use it. You could take your well shed and box it in and make a small make do cabin out of it in a day or so. Dirt floor with a wood burner, there you go you have shelter. I've used those blue Colman jugs for over thirty five years now. They never wear out. Start simple and much as yourself keep building til you get it the way you want it. Peiople need to know the lay of their land as well. Floods, water, wind, sunlight for solar things like that. You've never felt rich til you don't have any bills. Even if you don't have money. But now you have to get with it and make it happen. Everyday is a work day at something. Next time, look forward to the new build. Hey does that place have a well? I don't remember seeing one.

I found your channel by pure luck. I've watched almost every episode. I remember when you got your puppy Skeeter 🐶 ♥️. In everything, you'll come across people who try to criticize your efforts. I like how you humbly accept and correct that. Your a true pioneer Kyle and best wishes for your little growing family ❤❤ Looking forward to the next one 😀 👍 😊

Great video, realistic and on a subject you obviously know alot about. You can live very comfortably on very little if you just stop and take two seconds to think. I've had to do it many times. The next place I'm building for myself will be the last and I'm moving deep into the woods off grid. I can't wait! I'm subscribed and will be watching your other videos. Thanks.

I’ve lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for over 40 years and this is ligit, lived in a teepee as a kid while dad was building house, lived in dry cabins as an adult hauling water , using an outhouse and going to laundromat for showers all within the city limits, this lifestyle is not uncommon up here

You could also winterize your well and run a simple pressure system to get the water to the house. The cost of drilling your well must be far more expensive than the plumbing. An indoor bathroom with a compost toilet or small septic system would be convenient and your waste water and sewage would be safely dispersed. When your little one comes in the fall running to the outhouse in January might be a chore. Sixty years ago we used a 30 gallon water tank in the attic and a hand pump to fill it. The water then flowed to the kitchen and bathroom by gravity. Much easier than an outhouse and carrying water jugs.

They also have a composting toilet in the washroom in the cabin.
