When Robert's son died he fell into a deep depression. This was written to his wife in order to tell her that he was going to devote his love to her as they both dealt with the death of their child.
One of my favorite Zeppelin songs! Have you reacted to the song “How Long” by the group Ace? You have to check out a band called Ace and their hit song “How Long”
I don't know about any of the other crap I was reading but what I do know about this song was it has to deal with the death of Robert's son at a young age and that he did this in one take or they did this and one take
One of the most poetic of Zep's songs. 1979, from the final album. John Bonham died in the following year. As others will mention, this song was written to memorialize the death of Robert Plant's young son (Karac) in 1977. If it sounds like it's missing something, Jimmy Page didn't contribute to the writing. Which is probably why it sounds more like a song from Plant's solo career.
Not only did Jimmy not contribute to this song, he didn't attend the funeral of Robert's son. People say they broke up because of the death of John, but they were already on the outs, John's death just gave them an excuse for what was already written on the wall.
JPJ didn’t go to his son’s funeral either, though I will say, a child’s funeral is the hardest thing to do. Maybe they felt guilty, that they were touring when he passed away.
Good ear...very close; it was released in 1979. I was in the 9th grade and loving life :) I just turned 60 and Zep, Pink Floyd, Rush and Black Sabbath are still listened to on a daily basis.
A very beautiful song for a beautiful little boy. Plant almost gave up his career, Bonham talked him into coming back to the band. They didn’t tour for about 18 months, they were touring in the US, when Robert got the news his son passed away.
This might be my favorite Led Zeppelin song, maybe. Well, it depends on my mood. "Thank You", "D'yre Maker", "Black Dog", "The Rain Song", "The Ocean". There are too many to choose a favorite!
"Credited to Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, it is a rock ballad that features a synthesizer solo by Jones. It was written in honour of Plant's son Karac, who died while Led Zeppelin were on their 1977 North American tour." 😢
Robert Plant & John Paul Jones essentially did everything on this album except play guitar and drums. Jimmy & Bonham were deep into addictions & destructive behavior and couldn't participate much in the writing, producing etc. I love this album very much regardless of that, in the end Jimmy & Bonham did a great job playing their instruments, as usual. In fact, some Bonham fans think he did some of his best work on here, including Dave Grohl, the drummer for Nirvana & founder/lead singer/guitarist for the Foo Fighters. He picked this album as his favorite from LZ because of Bonham's drumming.
I love this entire album (ok, except for Hot Dog, but I know it has its fans, lol). Have listened to it from start to finish an untold number of times since the 80s, when it was introduced to me. End of the 70s synthesizers were getting more technically advanced & musicians were excited to use them. I believe JPJ had just got some new synths/keys and had fun with it on this album.
If I had to list every Led Zeppelin song in order of preference, I have to admit All My Love would be at the very bottom. No disrespect to anyone who loves it. I think it’s all of the sappy wailing at the end- and they should have closed the song much sooner. It just drones on forever. I could shoot myself in the head or I could just put on Led Zeppelin II. 🏄♂️
One of the most beautiful songs due to it's touching meaning ❤
