--
The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells, first serialised in 1897 by Pearson's Magazine in the UK and by Cosmopolitan magazine in the US.
Written between 1895 and 1897, it is one of the earliest stories to detail a conflict between mankind and an extra-terrestrial race and is one of the most commented-on works in the science fiction canon.
The plot has been related to invasion literature of the time. The novel has been variously interpreted as a commentary on evolutionary theory, British imperialism, and generally Victorian superstitions, fears, and prejudices. Wells said that the plot arose from a discussion with his brother Frank about the catastrophic effect of the British on indigenous Tasmanians. What would happen, he wondered, if Martians did to Britain what the British had done to the Tasmanians, who were wiped out with the last dying in 1876.
The War of the Worlds has been both popular (having never been out of print) and influential, spawning half a dozen feature films, a record album, various comic book adaptations, a number of television series, and radio dramas, the most infamous being the 1938 radio programme directed by and starring Orson Welles that allegedly caused public panic among listeners who did not know the Martian invasion was fictional, although the scale of panic is disputed as the program had relatively few listeners.
The book was banned immediately in China, Japan, Vietnam, as well as North America due to political and scientific theories touted by the novel. - Розваги
No one would have believed in the early years of the 21st Century, that I would find one of my favorite readings of The War of the Worlds.
Yet, across the gulf of cyberspace, I spotted this.

Definitely a possibility! I'll make a note of it :)
This is by far the best read (and produced) version of Wells' classic novel on UA-cam. It's also one of my favorite books of all time so thankyou for this.
Fantastic job.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy my other books as much. :)
What are the other books
This reading is amazing 👏
Good job this is very entertaining to listen to, and the sound effects make it seem so much more real.
Thank you! This is definitely one of my favourites. :)
Such a fantastic book! Such a shame that a truly faithful TV / Movie adaptation has never been made.
It'd be pretty great, right? Ah, well. I'm glad you enjoyed my version, anyway. 🙂
Having heard the book read now I actually appreciate the movie alot more than I previously did. Really if you think about it the movie follows the events of the book pretty damn well but in a more modern sense. At least that's what I depict. Super cool stuff.
After 2 minutes that Jeff Wayne track started playing in my head..
This is epic. Fantastic work
You have no idea how many times that started up in my head while I was making this, hahahahahaha!
This is the first audio book I've ever listened to and it's my first time with this book.. I heard about this book for year's. I'm sooooo glad I found it here.. awesome job.🙂🇨🇦❤️🙂

I never thought Audiobooks were as enjoyable as this. it reminds me of radio drama when i was a kid.

This was one of the first books I read as a young teenager. Has been about a decade since I’ve read it and getting a refresher from listening to your audiobook was great and reminded me why I read it through. Thank you for this great work

@@SteveParkerAudiobooks I'm definitely going to! It was delightful to find this after realising my library sadly don't have an audio copy. So very excited to listen and even though I've just heard the start I'm loving the quality and gravitas of your voice
@@emilystewart6175 Thank you 🙂
It's eerie how some of what's written would become a reality. The Martians destroying ammo depots, telegraph lines, and towns (the Total War of world war), the black poisonous smoke (chemical weapons), mass numbers of refugees fleeing, heat rays (lasers), the Martians pushing through military lines to hit targets deep within (blitzkrieg).
To quote my favourite video game series. War never changes.
Like others have mentioned, I too was brought up on Jeff Wayne and Richard Burton versions, have skipped through many other versions, I'm so glad I found your version.
Fantastic story telling and the added sound effects give it the extra edge and suspense.

Thank you very much :)
Just finished! That was an amazing production. The voices and use of sound effects all worked immensely, often extremely immersive and wonderful. Great to have listened to this.
Also an interesting note is I am from the area that this book is set in. Certainly made it fun imagining all the places getting destroyed.
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying my work. This one is a bit of a personal favourite of mine, I must admit. 🙂
Yes I agree, the production was really great. Do you prefer immersive audiobooks to just a straight read?
@@albionbyrd Absolutely.

Haha! I must admit I was a little thrown when recording it, too!
I have never read this book. I only know the story from the Jeff Wayne / Richard Burton interpretation. I never realised there was so much more. ‘Liked’ after ten minutes (half of which was spent reading the comments) and in for the long haul. Thank you very much indeed.

@@SteveParkerAudiobooks My pleasure as you did a great job on the reading-of one of my favorite books from my youth. However I'm just not ready to listen to Animal Farm or 1984 as those two have become a harbinger of our current political situation
awesomeness!
This one took a while!
This is really incredible work. Even your... noises, I guess, are perfect.
What do you call all the noises?
Anyway, this is really great. Your voice, it's quality and timbre, the inflection all of it, perfect. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome. I call them sound effects, or soundscaping.
@@SteveParkerAudiobooks
Soundscaping! Yes! Perfect. It felt wrong to call all of that sound effects.
I listened to 1984 before this one and Winston was reading the book. All of a sudden I realized that the pages were being turned at very reasonable intervals.
Of course, now I'm rummaging through your works for titles. :-)
onomatopoeia is the word you are trying to think of
@@raymondmercado3507
I'm not sure that onomatopoeia is quite the same thing as Mr. Parker's soundscaping.
That's like a cuckoo being named a cuckoo because it makes the sound "cuckoo", or a gong, which makes the sound "gong".
It is a really great word though! I had all but forgotten it. Thank you so much for bringing that up.
Born in the 80's, I'd never heard of this book til now !! First I thought I was going to listen while trying to sleep but couldn't sleep... Then that Martian light beam sounded ! Many times until it felt like an alarm clock !!! When I was conscious enough I realized my dreams were slightly mixed with the book contents.
This book is epic / awesome. Today I reflect on how much better books are than movies. Oh how I wonder if this would still be true if time limits were completely forgotten about !?! This book is like a constant horror ! nail & teeth biting... gripping & clasping for comfort > u get none !!
So surprised I'd never heard of this ! yeah, my mom & dad certainly knew bout it. Even mentioned,, ' isn't that the one people thought was real ? from radio broadcast '
Great to hear! Glad I was able to introduce you to something new, and that you're enjoying my work. :)
Let’s gooooo! 🔥🚀
The best
Thank you 🙂
Amazing quality! Great sound design! Subscribed and excited for the next release. This was such an amazing listening experience.
A bit of constructive feedback: the reading was impeccable but I found it slightly too dramatic. Also some of the accents/characters were difficult to understand.
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying my work :)
I always think about how the man finding the first cylinder wanted to help the Martians when he thought they were trapped inside. It's sad but maybe there could have been peace.
Please do dune, you’re the perfect person for this!
I would LOVE to, but it won't be in public domain for many years, yet.
I watched the film some years back, so I am excited to see, well, hear the differences to the book. HG Wells is a great author, but Jack London is one of my favourites. I'd be happy if you could produce a few of his books as well. I heard good things about Iron Heel, but haven't read that one yet. It's a dystopian novel with an underlying political message about fascism (apparently). Think you like books like that, too.
Edit: Very, very different. Completely different character, and obviously less communication and technology as this is set in the 19th century.
I think we have some London on the future books list. Did you watch the 1953 film or the 205?
@@SteveParkerAudiobooks The 2005 one, didn't know there's a 1953 version. Tom Cruise was great though.

Listened to this on Nightshift, got to say the Martians signature cry is absolutely the best I've ever heard. I imagine it's the closest to what Mr Wells imagined all those years ago. Well done it's a brilliant adaptation.
Thank you! I was actually a bit worried about them - I must have done a couple of dozen versions! I'm glad they came out alright. :)
Fantastic telling of this. Not just a good alien story but the comparison with technology now and technology 1897.
Is it childish to laugh at 2:45:46 ??. Great work. Thanks
Thank you! I really enjoyed making this one, and if I said I never had a giggle when recording scenes like that, I'd be lying. ;)
You and Tim should do The Great Gatsby
It's on the list of future projects. 🙂
You should try reading the interworld series (by Niel Gaiman), it might be nice
I'd love to, but that won't be in the public domain for many, many years yet.
Bro snuck in the O'brien voice actor with a cockney accent and thought we wouldn't notice :)
Tim Williams is a good friend and awesome voice actor - he's in quite a few of my books. :)
It is incredible that this was written in late 1895, if there is no scientific inaccuracy from things they don't know, I wouldn't have a slight hint that it was from 1890s.
Amazing, eh? It's only really the pre-eminence of steam power, and their greatest weapon being a cannon which gives it away, I think.

06:09:08 The destruction of what? I can't find what he's talking about.
And mister wells forgot to mention what happened to the brother. Last we hear was at the end of book one. He flees to belgium and that's all we hear
Sennacherib was the king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire from the death of his father Sargon II in 705 BC to his own death in 681 BC. The second king of the Sargonid dynasty, Sennacherib is one of the most famous Assyrian kings.
@@SteveParkerAudiobooks I didn't know how to spell it! Thank you for clearing it up :)
It was a really great read. especially the sound you used for the martian howling will be stuck in my head for now.
@@obiwanfisher537 Thank you! That noise is actually me put through some filters. :)
@@SteveParkerAudiobooks I know, I noticed, but it's still very unique and chilly.
Personally think HG Wells started strong, but got weaker and weaker towards the end in this book.
The last few chapters are so uneventful... Also noticed that he tries to write from an I perspective, but then he assumes emotions and thoughts of other people and includes information "he only learned later on" which breaks the immersion quite a bit.
Defeats the whole purpose of the first person perspective.
And I STILL miss that there was no conclusion for his brothers character.. When he first introduced the character and his flight, I thought we'd hear more of him and they would dramatically meet again somewhere, somehow.
It's a classic still because the idea was so, literally, alien and unique, but I don't think it's that great. Sorry to say.
But you are a really amazing narrator and listening to you makes it so much easier to stay focused on my data entry jobs. Otherwise I'd just give up after 20 minutes and do something else.
