NRM I Was Banned from the Amazon Affiliate Program

  • Yes. It is true. I was banned from my Affiliate Marketing Program before I even got started. It is a story of lessons learned. If you are considering, or have already become, an Affiliate Partner on Amazon, you might find this video instructional and helpful.
I will be the first to admit that my reason for being banned was entirely my fault. I have no complaints about Amazon or its partnership program. I just screwed up. (shoulder shrug). Life happens. :)
Stick around for the 2nd half of the video. I'll explain in some detail the various ways you can support this channel without ever spending a dime.
Find me everywhere I am on the Internet here: timchilders.bi....
I started this channel in order to document life as it gets lived. It's about where I live, how I live, where I travel, why I travel, and so much more. Eclectic is a good word for the content to be found here. I hope you will come along for the ride!

I'm sorry you got banned, Tim. I know you will find ways to make some coffee and gas money from your channel, though. This was a very informative video. Thanks!
BTW...some viewers may watch videos in 2x, which affects the watch time.
In case anybody is interested ...Creators get credit for the time watched. So a 10 minute video watched from start to finish is 10 minutes. But a 10 minute video watched from start to finish in 2x is only 5 minutes. Also, if the viewer scrolls past sections, we don't get credit for that, so watching for 2 minutes, then scrolling to the end for the last minte is 3 minutes watch time. If they scroll through the introduction or click off at the outro, that affects the videos performance, which affects the algorithm, which can affect the way the creator's future videos will perform because of how yt uses the algorithm.
It's more complicated than that, of course. Like many creators, I don't know enough about how the algorithm works to make it work for me. I just do what I do and hope my viewers like it.
Also for those who are interested, creators only make money through ads if the ad plays all the way through. It's not a lot of money, but it is zero if they skip the ad at any point.
YT puts ads on all of our videos, monetized or not. I'm not monetized and I have no control over ads on my channel, but I wouldn't ask people to sit through the ads either.

@@Jen.O Liking a comment is interaction, and interaction is valued in the algorithm. I'm not sure if there is a cutoff for likes that are deeper in a thread, but if you like a comment and want to click the thumbs up or respond, don't worry about whether or not the algorithm will count it. It won't be counted against the creator. Even if it doesn't count in the algorithm, it may still be beneficial to someone who reads the comment someday and sees that thumbs up.

I will keep my very positive reviews to myself. What happened to you, Tim, seems similar. No human was seemingly involved in the decision! You made mistakes as a beginner and got a lifetime ban! I was also banned from reviews because gave an honest review of a Cricut policy on the product page of a Cricut I own. They apparently sell a lot of Cricuts. What I learned from the experience is never trust Amazon reviews. Amazon is universally awful, nothing good about the platform at all.

Watching does help a Contant creator greatly! We have to meet certain requirements to be monetized. It changes all the time too, so it's really hard to keep track of!! So if you like content, like Tim puts out, as I do, watching videos all the way through will really help him! Even if you're not in the room watching, just having it running on your TV will count as "watch hours" for & Likes 👍🏻, for Tim!! Subscriptions and the amount of time you play or watch his videos will definitely help him make more money. Also, when you leave comments like you just did, it helps him as well, because UA-cam's algorithms watch for things like that. Comments of any kind means that people are engaged with his content in some way or the other. Even if they're negative comments, surprisingly, those help too! It means his videos are at least getting people's attention! I just wanted to make sure that is clear to all those who do not have a channel, so have not had a reason to read up on and research exactly how it works. 😄 Keep doing what you're doing Tim! I love the comments you get. People really love you and it's no wonder! You are very genuine and likable!! 👍🏻😉

I’m part of a small UA-camrs club, most of us are Gen X, we all support each other’s channels by watching, liking, and commenting. I also let the videos play all the way through and walk away (while still playing) if I’m not that interested in a particular video or if I have something to do around the house. I try to avoid looking at the engagement time while looking at stats because it can be very disheartening when I’ve worked really hard and spent countless hours putting a video together to know that people are clicking off after 2-3 minutes. I came for Amazon but glad I stayed for the rest. Take care

UA-cam algorithm notices this and the creator gets more likely to show up in the feed.

What I liked about this video is the explanation of how that works. I never really understood why or how these "huge fat cats" can just arbitrarily do these things to people. There have been corporations in the past that were taken to court for this exact thing because if this is the only service available they must provide it. We live under tyranny whether we believe it or not.

Thank you for explaining some of the idiosyncrasies of being an Amazon or UA-cam producer, because it’s hard to know what to search for if you don’t know what to search for! 😁 I hope you do continue to explain the details of your online experience - it’s quite helpful. BTW, I think Amazon is too harsh regarding their judgement policy, and I feel your videos do not warrant such a severe punishment. 😢
Be well, and thanks again. ✌️

I am 66 and was unaware of how algorithms work. I have already subscribed and will be sure to watch your videos to the end, click the like and leave a comment. Also, if the ad is relevant to me, I will let it run. All the best to you and your decluttering process. I appreciate learning from someone close to my own age who understands this stage of life😊

That is crazy that you banned by Amazon, so quickly. I can relate. My son sold some things for a friend on Ebay and didn't know to tell her that you can put a minimum amount on the item, so that if you don't get as much as you want, then you don't have to sell it for that bid. So, the last bid was way to low for what she wanted to sell it for and therefore refused to sell it. There were a few items listed and because he didn't sell it to the highest bidder, he got banned, and because he had the same address as me, I got banned as well. I called many times begging them to not punish me and they said the same thing. You are banned for life, however, you can still buy. There wasn't even an appeal. Even though I had 100% positive reviews. I tried years later and still I'm not welcome. I know how devastating it can be. I will plan to do the things you asked so that you can make some money. Thanks for explaining how it works.

Hi Tim. Hate that you got a ban but no worries here on finishing your videos. This is weird but you remind me so much of a family member so watching you is like catching up with him. He’s actually a guy that grew up with my older brother and was at our house so much I just considered him an extra brother. Kindest, sweetest, person I think I’ve ever met. He has the same easy going speech that you have so yeah….you must be related! ☺️ And…nope…no marriage proposal! 😳 No worries there either! 😂 About comments. I can talk. A LOT! So I’ll be happy to leave comments! 😂 I’m still enjoying the de-cluttering. No I’m not. I’m lying but I’m talking myself into it 🙄 Ok one last bit of info and I’ll shut up. I’m being plagued by raccoons on my deck. Live on a hillside in WV in an A-frame and my deck is 32 feet off the ground. Those buggers love to climb. 😡 So I’m heading out now to put my plants back into their pots, clean up the EXPENSIVE ProMix potting soil he tore into and spread everywhere. 😡🤬 So you have a good one and I’ll catch you on the next video. Maybe by then the coon will have met his demise. 😏 Not by me. Hopefully he’s old and ready to croak! 😂🤣 🙏🏻❤️🙋🏻‍♀️

It would not surprise me one bit to see you have other videos go viral (including this one and your video describing how UA-cam monitization works). You're putting out content that is relevant and interesting to people and its enjoyable to watch because you're not adding in a bunch of fluff and hype. I couldn't tell you the last time I watched TV, but I watch a LOT content on UA-cam as I'm going through my day. There is a sweet spot for watchbility- and you have mastered it. I look forward to watching the rest of your current videos and your future ones as well! Keep up the good work!

I really appreciate you explanation of how UA-cam promotes (or ignores) videos. I most often skip pressing the like button for reasons (as it turns out no longer valid reason) that have nothing to do with the content. Until I learned how to create my own little mini playlists of UA-cam videos I was using the "Liked Videos" side tab as a means of going back to special vidoes that I might want to watch again. Within the past year or so I discovered a feature I did not really understand existed. When you press the "Save Until Later" button below a video, you can actually create new categories within the Save for Later tab (subfolders) that you can label so you can go back and find favorite videos whenever you want. I have set up "Health and Nutrition" "Gardening" "Recipes" "Geology" "Interesting Stuff" etcetera. I am taking the time to explain this in case there may be others who are unaware of how this works. So now when I watch a video I like, I am no longer relying of the "Liked VIdeos" category to find special videos that I want to access multiple times. Hope this was not a confusing explanation LOL. Bottom line, I now freely press the like button and will be even more diligent doing so now that I understand how it affects the algorithm.

I have varied interests and watch videos on different topics but I'm also a busy person. Hi, I tuned into your videos because I'm also recently retired and a photography enthusiast. I've spent the last 10 years of my life decluttering, donating, throwing out, giving away and recycling what I don't use. Don't think of me as a hoarder (well, at least the ones you see on tv), I simply had too much that I wasn't using. One thing I realized is what I put back (I want to keep this) the first go around, was a "get rid" of the second or third go around of minimalizing my house and my life.

A rule I always stuck to as a teacher was no presentations over 10 minutes, and I would extend that to 15 if they really expressed interest. TED talks have it right. That brings me to a question. What if one watches a longer video in segments? I do that all the time. Do you still get the credit? Is there a minimum length of the video for it to be monetized? Just wondering 😊

Hi Tim, congratulations. You’re saying that the other video that got all those thousands of views is a fluke, but I disagree. I think from what I’m seeing as of today September 7, 2023, several of your other videos are getting thousands of views. So you’re underestimating your reach and your potential. Which is actually quite endearing. It shows that you are humble. As for getting banned from Amazon, a lot of these online companies, including Etsy, Amazon KDP and others, will ban people without even giving them a specific reason that explains why they have been banned. At least, in your case, they pointed out to you what you did wrong. I say word to the wise, no one should ever rely solely on these platforms for their bread and butter precisely because this type of thing could happen out of the blue. I’ve now subscribed to your channel. I find your content very engaging. Keep up the good work!

I don’t feel like you are trying to do more than be yourself, which is refreshing. It’s too easy for YT presenters to get caught up in the theater of it all. I hope you stay humble and within yourself and not ever be tempted to “jump the shark”. Enjoy the ride.
