For my birthday a couple days ago, I asked my family to declutter. No material gifts. We all agree that although it was more work than buying something, it was a gift that everyone benefitted from. My favorite items that were decluttered were my kids old bikes and a couple sleds no-one uses. They were put at the curb and gone that same day. Decluttering is a Gift that keeps on giving. Great idea! I wish could ask that of my husband for my birthday of our garage. But I fail to get him to understand the concept of decluttering and doing it neatly 😂. His idea is to pile it all on top of each other in one pile and always always leave something undone.
One thing at a time is how I decluttered my basement. I committed to the rule that every time I went into the basement, I had to come up bringing one thing to dispose of. It took a long time, but eventually it was decluttered. And as long as it took, it was not nearly as long as the years I spent worrying about how bad the basement was and not doing anything about it.
Great piece of inspiration - as a recognition of American Ingenuity I like that American homes in a lot of areas don't have basements and this is ideal to resist the temptation to acquire things that will be put in the basement and forgotten about!Cheers from Canada!
No matter how many decluttering videos I watch, I always feel inspired to get up and throw(or donate) something right after watching. There are many concepts and processes that have helped me. My favorite was recognizing that my fantasy self doesn't live here. I decluttered alot of crafty stuff when that realization occurred. My other favorite is asking myself (and you touched on this) "if I don't have this item, what else can I use?" So many kitchen gadgets are just not necessary. That helped me clean out enough drawer space to clear off the counters. And that, is golden. Thanks for sharing.
I used to have a gift chair-when people would visit…I would always remind them to check the chair. I would much rather give things to those I know and love and could use things…clothing, food items stationary knickknacks, etc. A mobile bin of those items when I leave the house would be cool too…I may start my chair up again and then put those things in a clear bin and take it when I go visiting friends and family. Thanks for your video! I hope your well! ❤ As I continued to finish watching the video…I could also send the bin home with friends that have several children grandchildren etc…I can attach a sign with “Please return gift bin back to Mrs. Julie.” …so I get my bin back…but that would further reach more loved ones I may not visit often.
Yes, I feel a sense of accomplishment with each bag that leaves my home. I do not let my donations accumulate. When I get a full bag, it goes to the donation center.
These are great ideas, Tim! My recent strategy has gone like this. It's garbage day and I still have some space available in this large can that I pay to have picked up weekly. (I'm in the county ya know) Let me see how much junk I can fit in here. I have cleaned out two closets and a lot of the garage with this method over the last few weeks.
When a cousin with a strong back came to visit recently, I took the opportunity to get rid of heavy items that I'd had close to 40 years and no longer needed. Whew! Now I gotta work on the littler things.
It always helps to have a strong person to help with the heavy loads. That's a thing of the past for me. Now I have to pay people to do that kind of work.
One of the things I have started doing is; get a box, when you open a drawer, cabinet or find anything you know you no longer want, need or feel joy about, throw it in the box. When that box is full, take it to donation and begin a new box! You will be surprised at how fast the boxes fill up. Just one trick of many. Thank you Tim for sharing, you always give me more ideas!
A tip that works for me. An easy way to key in on the most useful, and favorite kitchen items is take note of what you unload out of the dishwater, day after day. What's left in the cabinets can probably go out the door! Likewise with your favorite clothing; what's in your clothes hamper, week after week, laundry load after laundry load, is what you actually need to hang on to. Use that "data' to help you decide what can exit your home!
I have been using the one-item-per day rule for a while, now. Usually, I average many more, simply because things like clothing, tools, and furniture eventually wear out. My daughter is also motivated to list items for me on Mercari and Poshmark. The old discontinued colognes I received on every occasion are now "vintage" and often valuable. The same for old clothes that I bought from thrift stores 30 years ago. Whatever my daughter sells, she keeps the money -- and she's done very well!
When I got up this morning, I started cleaning my kitchen cabinets of the many things I no longer use. I live alone and have over 20 coffee cups! Yikes! How many mixing bowls do I need? Making it a mind game makes all of the difference. After living 53 years in the same house, having a retail and wholesale business (12,000 sq. ft. ) for 30 years that had to close unexpectantly, and having a mother, brother, and husband who passed has left me with a massive amount of things to get rid of. This year I decided to get serious about decluttering. I set a goal of removing 10 physical items everyday by selling, donating, or trashing, with a goal of 3000 by Dec. 31. I use a planning calendar and a spread sheet to keep track of my progress. As of yesterday I have removed 3800 items. It is a slow process but it keeps me motivated to keep going. The vast majority of this is unsold store merchandise. There was no time to have a business closing sale. It don't begin to count junk E-mails and text messages. I clean out 500 a day that there seems to be no way to stop it. The only thing I have been able to stop are all the junk and spam phone calls.
What a great strategy - congratulations !! BTW, if you get a really good anti-virus on your technology, it should cut down or eliminate all the junk/spam you're receiving. Ask a techie for a good specialist anti-virus. Cheers!
@@jassewalton1768 I do have a virus program and also have a lifetime subscription to Malwarebytes. I got that program about 25 years ago and it has saved me many headaches with viruses and malware. It won't even let me open any online sites that are suspicious. It scans every day and quarantines any pups and threats.
Buy to sell. Here is an unusual one. We looked into renting a tile saw but it was not feasible because we are seniors and were going to tile two bathrooms and a kitchen so we'd have to rent it three times and keep it for multiple days each time. So we bought a wet saw, finished all our jobs and sold it on Facebook for only $50 less than we paid for it. I like the one about focusing on clearing your areas you drop stuff. For me it was the refrigerator. I really hate taking it apart to clean. So I started wiping it out every week before grocery shopping and now it is always clean. Bonus we don't throw food away.
Hi, Tim! I feel like I'm in a perpetual, relentless declutter whirlwind! I like the sound of the one-thing-per-day method. For me I've put a nice sized box in my front coat closet. My plan is to fill that box every week with as much stuff as I can get into it and take it to Goodwill. I've put an item on my to do list for Saturday's, going forward, to remind me to take whatever is in the box to Goodwill, as part of my Saturday errands. I'm hopeful this will help me. Lol I just started watching this video and had to laugh when you mentioned getting rid of a bowl with no lid or a sock with no match…last week I went thru the cupboard and threw away a TON of plastic bowls with AND without lids, and also threw away a plastic grocery bag full of socks that had been in the corner waiting for months to see if if the match would show up! 🤪 Let me tell you it felt so good! Love this list! A few I could add... 1. "Gamifying Decluttering". I did The Minimalists Game every month of 2021 and then did other decluttering games when that year was up. Making it a game kept me interested in continuing. Making it fun could be as easy as setting a timer for 10 minutes a day and letting the progress add up. 😊 2. Body Doubling. This means that you have a "comfort person" or what I call a "Declutter Buddy" with you while tackling a decluttering project. Often just having a friend or family member nearby as a support can be comforting and motivating. More hands also makes lighter work. 😊❤️

Setting aside a10-, 15-, or 30-minute window each day has helped me chip away at projects and chores I have been putting off. I set my phone to time me, and for that set time I work on the project, stopping when the timer goes off. If the project is not done, I return to it the next day for another timed session. I don’t know why this works, but it has helped me clear away two major projects that have languished on the back burner for years.

i do seasonal change out, and started decluttering seasonal things that im bored with. it feels good. i live in a very small space, so its helps to keep clean. a few years ago, i was having problems with silver fish really bad. i systematially went draw by draw that had paper. -took outside, lol. wiped paper & folders. i bought new plastic folders & put paper that i was keeping into gallon sized ziplock freezer bags. then i sprayed perimeter baseboard with orange oil. (i stay away from toxic chemicals) i have only had 2 this year in my bathroom. so i need to clean under sink and spray crevasses.
I was in property management for nearly 30 years. Those "horder" shows give me flashbacks of disgusting apartments that I cleaned for years! 😂 It's funny now, but I remember throwing my clothing in the trash after cleaning several apartments.
Wonderful tips. I found that once I get started decluttering I continue to declutter in other areas. It gives me such a sense of accomplishment. I’m still decluttering spare bedrooms and going thru boxes but I’m making great progress.
I like the idea of reverse decluttering. I also keep a bag in my bedroom and bags and boxes in my basement for my "Sister Thrift" trip with my husband...usually on Saturdays. Also on those trips we will go to recycle center in town and bring clothing that is unusable and is used for fabrics. Also we have brought broken fans and meat cutters to the recycle center. It's actually fun to see others recycling. My daughters use Buy nothing to get rid of items and facebook. Personally I think that is more work than I want to do. As I drop off items I raise my arms to the skies in happiness. Joan

I keep a box ready and put things into it for donating as I find them. It also helps that a local thrift shop gives away much of what is donated to people who need the items. I feel really good about donating there.
This was excellent and I use many of these..another thing I do is never leave a room empty-handed if there's something that needs to go I can take it with me when I leave the room. I had just done some decluttering before watching this video 😊
I like the last tip so much. I declutter the area in my home that bugs me the most first.. Surfaces are definitely up there on the list. I also keep the entrance way clear and the stairs and floor clear so I am not tripping over anything.
I think being intentional is key. You have to DECIDE you're going to make progress. It's not going to be automatic or happen by accident. I found I have to decide that having that wonderful feeling when you've decluttered an area is one you want to feel often and you want that feeling to override the frustration you have that every corner in your house, and behind the couch, have boxes of stuff you probably don't even know what is contained! The good feeling carries me through every area. The positive feeling I have starting last week of parking my car IN the garage overrides the frustration that I haven't been able to for the last 15 years. You just have to be intentional to change how you feel, which happens by eliminating things in your house (and garage) that simply don't need to be there.
I am probably the exception but the garage stays clear of anything that does not need to be there...especially in Australia where size matters! (too small compear to what we had back in the States)

Your tomorrow self will really love you if you get started and do it. I started my journey with cleaning my kitchen sink every night before going to bed. No dirty dishes, no dirty counter tops. As ‘That Practical Mom’ says your tomorrow self will thank you. And it worked. That worked so well, I started doing quick straightening of other parts of the house. And as she said, if some item was always having to be picked up then it needs to either go or find a set place to be homed. After a few years, I continue to maintain a stress free home. It’s such a feeling of ‘lightness’.
Decluttering is a unique process. Once around it may not be picked to be donated, twice around it may not either. By the third time & the realization of how great your house is looking it will get picked for donation. It is really inspiring to have tackled areas & really see a big difference! I did a huge purge during a move 3 yrs ago this month. It was rough the first day but by day 3 it was liberating and I felt great when I filled a skip full of furniture, a desk that did not serve me anymore and 2 generations of kids growing up with left behind crap (I kept the grown kids). Clothes, books, movies, broken toys, dressers full of crap from years of "pick up your mess" that ended up being stuffed in any old drawer. Anyhow, it was great and now I need to do it again for all the crap in my garage that I have not touched in the last 3 yrs. Thank you for the video.
I love having seasonal clothes THAT FIT in my closet. I pack away off season clothes that I want to keep. I find it is easy to part with clothes I never wore during the season or have worn out than to pack them away.
i realized i am kind of lazy. i set things down and never put them away. when i realized this i decided to always put things where they go while i am still holding it so far this is helping i am going to try one thing a day... thanks for that idea!

Motivated to de clutter. Getting all interior walls painted, installing plank floors in 3 rooms. Every room in whirlwind chaos. But making progress...organizing, donating, trash, etc. Wish organizations we donate $ to would stop sending cards, calendars, & other junk!
My biggest thing is holding on to records (not the music.) A few years ago I invested in a good scanner and a good shredder. I went through YEARS of documents and organized the digital files so they were useful then shredded/disposed of the paper copies. It was liberating!
I like the one thing per day idea. I had already set out a bag for the library booksale near the bookshelves, but it was empty. While watching your video, I put one book into the bag. I’ll never read that book again, and someone can. Progress! Thanks.
It's tough to declutter as a couple. My husband and I seem to have problems decluttering together. I think we can get rid of something, but he feels we need to keep it and this happens in reverse too!😊 We seem to do much better decluttering when we aren't doing household items. In other words, if we are working on reducing clothes there's no question. Neither one of cares what other wants to get rid of.
Hubs is a 'set it down' kinda guy where I am 'put it away' kind of gal. We have created zones where he can drop things....a chair in the bedroom, his desk and his workshop. It seems to help because when there are limited spaces that fill up pretty quickly, even he notices and will put a few of the items away, if only to make room for another day. It's life.

I am making amazing progress by asking myself different questions. Instead of: will I want this someday? I ask: have I used this in a year? If not then out it goes. I have also given myself permission to throw things right in the trash can. No selling, no giving away, just trashing. I am disabled and it is easier for me to make my way out to the trash bin than the alternatives. It feels good to purge it all and you can too :)

Very helpful ideas! I laughed to myself because just before you said the word "agonize" that was came into my mind. I don't like the Clutter but it can be agonizing at times feeling like I'm going to make a mistake or have regrets.
Another piece of advice might be to hire a house stager to stage your house although you aren't moving -this could be a good way of getting your house in order and a burden of maybe having to much furniture crowding you out of your house!
when you declatter those clutter gatherin zones, notice how easy it is to put things away. if it is not easy to put things away identify what needs to change so that putting things away is as easy as putting them down in the clutter zone.
I am in the process of cleaning out my closet. There are boxes of stuff. I am still torn on what to toss or keep. A card from my mother, grandmother, father, husband …all with their signatures and silly poems. It holds memories just for me I know, but just seeing the handwriting is sentimental to me. And then boxes of photographs and film…from being a photographer all my life. Boxes….and boxes…and for several years I was a biological photographer, so I have slides and pictures of surgery and autopsy’s ….who wants those? It is a mountain of memories. It’s really hard to declutter for me. I may never finish even my closet. 😮
I understand about cards and sentimental things, Can you choose a representative sample? Keep your favorite few? Can you make several passes through these things? When you see things a couple of times it is often easier to let go of some of the things. Can you give yourself an acid free box for memorabilia and when that is filled you do not keep anymore? I believe that you can get through the closet. Set a timer for five or ten minutes, pick a small section at a time, do not allow yourself to get too tired and do these mini sessions often. Maybe you need to call in a friend or even a professional to help you. Good luck!

First time is when I moved. It took me two passages to throw out my strings from when I got my ears pierced when I was 13! I had seen someone’s video once that they called the 10 minute tidy. And they just decided to take 10 minutes to tackle an area of their house or a drawer or whatever and they could just do decluttering as they went along. I found that when I would start a 10 minute tidy, it would usually turn into sometimes 30 minutes. But it’s a nice motivational way to get you going when you you think you’re only gonna do it for 10 minutes.
Maybe the easiest place to start decluttering is, the bathroom. You don’t usually keep many sentimental items there, and many of the things there have expiration dates. Low hanging fruit.
My dad taight me to return something better than it was when you borrowed it. A car with a full tank of gas, wash the car. You don’t want that person sorry that they lent something to you!
I lent my neighbor my wet dry vacuum. She kept it more than a year. When I had water in my basement after a huge rain, I asked for it back and was told it broke, she threw it away and bought her own. (Never told me that when it happened.) She lent me hers but I had to return it the same day, per her request. I hate to loan my things anymore.
I started the “one item a day” method on the first of January. I haven’t missed any days yet. When I know I’m going to be away I try to get an item for those days ahead of time so I don’t fall behind. Even though I have been decluttering for years it has been relatively easy to find at least one thing (often more) a day to let go of. My goal is to finish out the entire year
Always love some inspiration on this topic. I love the "do it now" idea and that was long before Nike decided to go with the "just do it" marketing campaign, < smile >. Now it's off to see about making use of the camera on my phone.
Easiest way to declutter is……move house. Sure makes you declutter before having to actually take things in a paid for removal truck. We moved 3 yrs ago and I was determined not to have an attic full of “stuff” in the new house. Now we just have suitcases and Christmas decorations in our attic. 😊
I can’t sleep in a messy room. Also, the older I get the more likely I find I will put something away. I think the reason is that I know I may have less energy to do so later or will forget where I put it. It is a better use of my time to handle something once.
I understand that "donating" items makes one feel better about letting go of stuff. But some stuff really is just garbage and needs to be discarded. Put your big boy pants on and throw it away!
I prefer to advertise my unwanted items in the Free Stuff category on Craigslist. This way I know the item is matched with someone who wants it. The thrift stores, like any retail business, have limited floor space and must throw out a lot of stuff, not just junk but anything that won't sell reasonably quickly.
I have a real problem with hoarding…not junk or trash but kitchen stuff, closet full of business attire that I have already gone through three different times…(I retired 10 years ago!)…each time the amount of 33 gallon bags that I have filled for Goodwill is sad…sad for me but hopefully good for them…BUT my biggest problem is expensive items that I have bought over the years like over 2000, yes, 2000 cookbooks, le Creuset cookware, etc… we have “shed” sales in my over 55 community twice a year…last year I displayed all my leather and suede business jackets for sale but they ended up at the Goodwill because people expected me to sell them for five to ten dollars each!!! I had to close my eyes to do that…sorry but I will keep trying to declutter…my little sister says she going just light a match to my home when I die…she has the same problem😂😂
I buy some things and put them away and find them a year or more later because I forgot I had them. So most of my stuff can go. When I feel like doing it.
You think you're joking about the 22000 emails. But last time I logged into my laptop, about 2 months ago, there were over 20000. Some of them might be important.
I live in the third floor, no elevator. Everytime I leave I think I should take something with me, but there isn't. I wear my clothes until they are rags before I consider buying new ones, same with shoes. The trick is to have your things in eye sight do you never gorget you don mt need a second one.
I have no trouble keeping my bedside table clear, as my cat has decided that the only items allowed there are my CPAP machine and my phone. If I put anything else there, he knocks it off, and sometimes he hides it from me!
Opening a drawer or cabinet and setting the timer to 3-5 minutes (or whatever time you chose) to pull out things that are trash or donate. The goal is to do it fast and make it look better than it did before.
"Don't put it down, put it away" has helped me big time!

A tip that works for me. An easy way to key in on the most useful, and favorite kitchen items is take note of what you unload out of the dishwater, day after day. What's left in the cabinets can probably go out the door! Likewise with your favorite clothing; what's in your clothes hamper, week after week, laundry load after laundry load, is what you actually need to hang on to. Use that "data' to help you decide what can exit your home!

I have been using the one-item-per day rule for a while, now. Usually, I average many more, simply because things like clothing, tools, and furniture eventually wear out. My daughter is also motivated to list items for me on Mercari and Poshmark. The old discontinued colognes I received on every occasion are now "vintage" and often valuable. The same for old clothes that I bought from thrift stores 30 years ago. Whatever my daughter sells, she keeps the money -- and she's done very well!
When I got up this morning, I started cleaning my kitchen cabinets of the many things I no longer use. I live alone and have over 20 coffee cups! Yikes! How many mixing bowls do I need? Feeling accomplished, I decided to take a break and check your channel. It's about Decluttering!! Great minds think alike! Thanks Tim, for always inspiring us to do better!

Making it a mind game makes all of the difference. After living 53 years in the same house, having a retail and wholesale business (12,000 sq. ft. ) for 30 years that had to close unexpectantly, and having a mother, brother, and husband who passed has left me with a massive amount of things to get rid of. This year I decided to get serious about decluttering. I set a goal of removing 10 physical items everyday by selling, donating, or trashing, with a goal of 3000 by Dec. 31. I use a planning calendar and a spread sheet to keep track of my progress. As of yesterday I have removed 3800 items. It is a slow process but it keeps me motivated to keep going. The vast majority of this is unsold store merchandise. There was no time to have a business closing sale. It don't begin to count junk E-mails and text messages. I clean out 500 a day that there seems to be no way to stop it. The only thing I have been able to stop are all the junk and spam phone calls.
I found tracking my "Declutter Number" super motivating too 😊

@@jassewalton1768 I do have a virus program and also have a lifetime subscription to Malwarebytes. I got that program about 25 years ago and it has saved me many headaches with viruses and malware. It won't even let me open any online sites that are suspicious. It scans every day and quarantines any pups and threats.
Buy to sell. Here is an unusual one. We looked into renting a tile saw but it was not feasible because we are seniors and were going to tile two bathrooms and a kitchen so we'd have to rent it three times and keep it for multiple days each time. So we bought a wet saw, finished all our jobs and sold it on Facebook for only $50 less than we paid for it. I like the one about focusing on clearing your areas you drop stuff. For me it was the refrigerator. I really hate taking it apart to clean. So I started wiping it out every week before grocery shopping and now it is always clean. Bonus we don't throw food away.

Hi, Tim! I feel like I'm in a perpetual, relentless declutter whirlwind! I like the sound of the one-thing-per-day method. For me I've put a nice sized box in my front coat closet. My plan is to fill that box every week with as much stuff as I can get into it and take it to Goodwill. I've put an item on my to do list for Saturday's, going forward, to remind me to take whatever is in the box to Goodwill, as part of my Saturday errands. I'm hopeful this will help me. Lol I just started watching this video and had to laugh when you mentioned getting rid of a bowl with no lid or a sock with no match…last week I went thru the cupboard and threw away a TON of plastic bowls with AND without lids, and also threw away a plastic grocery bag full of socks that had been in the corner waiting for months to see if if the match would show up! 🤪

Love this list! A few I could add...
1. "Gamifying Decluttering". I did The Minimalists Game every month of 2021 and then did other decluttering games when that year was up. Making it a game kept me interested in continuing. Making it fun could be as easy as setting a timer for 10 minutes a day and letting the progress add up. 😊
2. Body Doubling. This means that you have a "comfort person" or what I call a "Declutter Buddy" with you while tackling a decluttering project. Often just having a friend or family member nearby as a support can be comforting and motivating. More hands also makes lighter work. 😊❤️

Setting aside a10-, 15-, or 30-minute window each day has helped me chip away at projects and chores I have been putting off. I set my phone to time me, and for that set time I work on the project, stopping when the timer goes off. If the project is not done, I return to it the next day for another timed session. I don’t know why this works, but it has helped me clear away two major projects that have languished on the back burner for years.
My husband and I have had great success using 30 minute timers 😊
I do not know why, I do not remember but that's what I was tought as a child to clean my room! Decluttering was just part of it...

i do seasonal change out, and started decluttering seasonal things that im bored with. it feels good. i live in a very small space, so its helps to keep clean. a few years ago, i was having problems with silver fish really bad. i systematially went draw by draw that had paper. -took outside, lol. wiped paper & folders. i bought new plastic folders & put paper that i was keeping into gallon sized ziplock freezer bags. then i sprayed perimeter baseboard with orange oil. (i stay away from toxic chemicals) i have only had 2 this year in my bathroom. so i need to clean under sink and spray crevasses.

I was in property management for nearly 30 years. Those "horder" shows give me flashbacks of disgusting apartments that I cleaned for years! 😂 It's funny now, but I remember throwing my clothing in the trash after cleaning several apartments.

Wonderful tips. I found that once I get started decluttering I continue to declutter in other areas. It gives me such a sense of accomplishment. I’m still decluttering spare bedrooms and going thru boxes but I’m making great progress.

I like the idea of reverse decluttering. I also keep a bag in my bedroom and bags and boxes in my basement for my "Sister Thrift" trip with my husband...usually on Saturdays. Also on those trips we will go to recycle center in town and bring clothing that is unusable and is used for fabrics. Also we have brought broken fans and meat cutters to the recycle center. It's actually fun to see others recycling. My daughters use Buy nothing to get rid of items and facebook. Personally I think that is more work than I want to do. As I drop off items I raise my arms to the skies in happiness. Joan

I keep a box ready and put things into it for donating as I find them. It also helps that a local thrift shop gives away much of what is donated to people who need the items. I feel really good about donating there.

This was excellent and I use many of these..another thing I do is never leave a room empty-handed if there's something that needs to go I can take it with me when I leave the room. I had just done some decluttering before watching this video 😊
I like the last tip so much. I declutter the area in my home that bugs me the most first.. Surfaces are definitely up there on the list. I also keep the entrance way clear and the stairs and floor clear so I am not tripping over anything.

I think being intentional is key. You have to DECIDE you're going to make progress. It's not going to be automatic or happen by accident. I found I have to decide that having that wonderful feeling when you've decluttered an area is one you want to feel often and you want that feeling to override the frustration you have that every corner in your house, and behind the couch, have boxes of stuff you probably don't even know what is contained! The good feeling carries me through every area. The positive feeling I have starting last week of parking my car IN the garage overrides the frustration that I haven't been able to for the last 15 years. You just have to be intentional to change how you feel, which happens by eliminating things in your house (and garage) that simply don't need to be there.
Clearing the garage definitely comes with a huge sense of accomplishment! As Chris Pratt says - the garage is the junk drawer of the house lol ❤
I am probably the exception but the garage stays clear of anything that does not need to be there...especially in Australia where size matters! (too small compear to what we had back in the States)

Your tomorrow self will really love you if you get started and do it. I started my journey with cleaning my kitchen sink every night before going to bed. No dirty dishes, no dirty counter tops. As ‘That Practical Mom’ says your tomorrow self will thank you. And it worked. That worked so well, I started doing quick straightening of other parts of the house. And as she said, if some item was always having to be picked up then it needs to either go or find a set place to be homed. After a few years, I continue to maintain a stress free home. It’s such a feeling of ‘lightness’.

Decluttering is a unique process. Once around it may not be picked to be donated, twice around it may not either. By the third time & the realization of how great your house is looking it will get picked for donation. It is really inspiring to have tackled areas & really see a big difference! It makes me to keep going!

I did a huge purge during a move 3 yrs ago this month. It was rough the first day but by day 3 it was liberating and I felt great when I filled a skip full of furniture, a desk that did not serve me anymore and 2 generations of kids growing up with left behind crap (I kept the grown kids). Clothes, books, movies, broken toys, dressers full of crap from years of "pick up your mess" that ended up being stuffed in any old drawer. Anyhow, it was great and now I need to do it again for all the crap in my garage that I have not touched in the last 3 yrs. Thank you for the video.
I love having seasonal clothes THAT FIT in my closet. I pack away off season clothes that I want to keep. I find it is easy to part with clothes I never wore during the season or have worn out than to pack them away.

I started two days ago with getting sick with covid. It's a great feeling.
Today's donated item was a painting that I no longer enjoyed looking at. My handyman took it for his charity work. Someone will love it and it is now out of my closet.🎉
Motivated to de clutter. Getting all interior walls painted, installing plank floors in 3 rooms.
Every room in whirlwind chaos. But making progress...organizing, donating, trash, etc.

My biggest thing is holding on to records (not the music.) A few years ago I invested in a good scanner and a good shredder. I went through YEARS of documents and organized the digital files so they were useful then shredded/disposed of the paper copies. It was liberating!
Scanners and Shredders are necessities when dealing efficiently with paper clutter in my opinion 😊

It's tough to declutter as a couple. My husband and I seem to have problems decluttering together. I think we can get rid of something, but he feels we need to keep it and this happens in reverse too!😊 We seem to do much better decluttering when we aren't doing household items. In other words, if we are working on reducing clothes there's no question. Neither one of cares what other wants to get rid of.
Hubs is a 'set it down' kinda guy where I am 'put it away' kind of gal. We have created zones where he can drop things....a chair in the bedroom, his desk and his workshop. It seems to help because when there are limited spaces that fill up pretty quickly, even he notices and will put a few of the items away, if only to make room for another day. It's life.
These are great tips! I am going to share these with some of my friends who I believe will also appreciate your ideas. Of course they may also need to listen to you explain them as well. Lol. I'm predicting this video will take off like your first decluttering video did. Thank you Tim! 😊
I am making amazing progress by asking myself different questions. Instead of: will I want this someday? I ask: have I used this in a year? If not then out it goes. I have also given myself permission to throw things right in the trash can. No selling, no giving away, just trashing. I am disabled and it is easier for me to make my way out to the trash bin than the alternatives. It feels good to purge it all and you can too :)

Very helpful ideas! I laughed to myself because just before you said the word "agonize" that was came into my mind. I don't like the Clutter but it can be agonizing at times feeling like I'm going to make a mistake or have regrets.
Ask yourself . . . When was the last time an Item was Used.🤔
Another piece of advice might be to hire a house stager to stage your house although you aren't moving -this could be a good way of getting your house in order and a burden of maybe having to much furniture crowding you out of your house!
when you declatter those clutter gatherin zones, notice how easy it is to put things away. if it is not easy to put things away identify what needs to change so that putting things away is as easy as putting them down in the clutter zone.

I am in the process of cleaning out my closet. There are boxes of stuff. I am still torn on what to toss or keep. A card from my mother, grandmother, father, husband …all with their signatures and silly poems. It holds memories just for me I know, but just seeing the handwriting is sentimental to me. And then boxes of photographs and film…from being a photographer all my life. Boxes….and boxes…and for several years I was a biological photographer, so I have slides and pictures of surgery and autopsy’s ….who wants those? It is a mountain of memories. It’s really hard to declutter for me. I may never finish even my closet. 😮
I understand about cards and sentimental things, Can you choose a representative sample? Keep your favorite few? Can you make several passes through these things? When you see things a couple of times it is often easier to let go of some of the things. Can you give yourself an acid free box for memorabilia and when that is filled you do not keep anymore? I believe that you can get through the closet. Set a timer for five or ten minutes, pick a small section at a time, do not allow yourself to get too tired and do these mini sessions often. Maybe you need to call in a friend or even a professional to help you. Good luck!

First time is when I moved. It took me two passages to throw out my strings from when I got my ears pierced when I was 13! I am/was a scrapbook/journal person, so there is a lot to go through for sure! Thanks again!

I had seen someone’s video once that they called the 10 minute tidy. And they just decided to take 10 minutes to tackle an area of their house or a drawer or whatever and they could just do decluttering as they went along. I found that when I would start a 10 minute tidy, it would usually turn into sometimes 30 minutes. But it’s a nice motivational way to get you going when you you think you’re only gonna do it for 10 minutes.
Maybe the easiest place to start decluttering is, the bathroom. You don’t usually keep many sentimental items there, and many of the things there have expiration dates. Low hanging fruit.

I lent my neighbor my wet dry vacuum. She kept it more than a year. When I had water in my basement after a huge rain, I asked for it back and was told it broke, she threw it away and bought her own. (Never told me that when it happened.) She lent me hers but I had to return it the same day, per her request. I hate to loan my things anymore.

I started the “one item a day” method on the first of January. I haven’t missed any days yet. When I know I’m going to be away I try to get an item for those days ahead of time so I don’t fall behind. Even though I have been decluttering for years it has been relatively easy to find at least one thing (often more) a day to let go of. My goal is to finish out the entire year

Easiest way to declutter is……move house. Sure makes you declutter before having to actually take things in a paid for removal truck. We moved 3 yrs ago and I was determined not to have an attic full of “stuff” in the new house. Now we just have suitcases and Christmas decorations in our attic. 😊

I can’t sleep in a messy room. Also, the older I get the more likely I find I will put something away. I think the reason is that I know I may have less energy to do so later or will forget where I put it. It is a better use of my time to handle something once.

When you unbox the seasonal clothes, the question isn't "Do I like this?" It is "Does this still fit?" That is the challenge :)

Yes that's a difficult one. Accepting that some items are just trash unfortunately.
I prefer to advertise my unwanted items in the Free Stuff category on Craigslist. This way I know the item is matched with someone who wants it. The thrift stores, like any retail business, have limited floor space and must throw out a lot of stuff, not just junk but anything that won't sell reasonably quickly.

Best Buy has been known to accept remote controls and other electronics for recycling/disposing.

I have a real problem with hoarding…not junk or trash but kitchen stuff, closet full of business attire that I have already gone through three different times…(I retired 10 years ago!)…each time the amount of 33 gallon bags that I have filled for Goodwill is sad…sad for me but hopefully good for them…BUT my biggest problem is expensive items that I have bought over the years like over 2000, yes, 2000 cookbooks, le Creuset cookware, etc… we have “shed” sales in my over 55 community twice a year…last year I displayed all my leather and suede business jackets for sale but they ended up at the Goodwill because people expected me to sell them for five to ten dollars each!!! I had to close my eyes to do that…sorry but I will keep trying to declutter…my little sister says she going just light a match to my home when I die…she has the same problem😂😂
I buy some things and put them away and find them a year or more later because I forgot I had them. So most of my stuff can go. When I feel like doing it.

You think you're joking about the 22000 emails. But last time I logged into my laptop, about 2 months ago, there were over 20000. Some of them might be important.
I live in the third floor, no elevator. Everytime I leave I think I should take something with me, but there isn't. I wear my clothes until they are rags before I consider buying new ones, same with shoes. The trick is to have your things in eye sight do you never gorget you don mt need a second one.
I have no trouble keeping my bedside table clear, as my cat has decided that the only items allowed there are my CPAP machine and my phone. If I put anything else there, he knocks it off, and sometimes he hides it from me!
Opening a drawer or cabinet and setting the timer to 3-5 minutes (or whatever time you chose) to pull out things that are trash or donate. The goal is to do it fast and make it look better than it did before.
Procrastination champ! 9 years, going on 10. Nothing to be proud of, just a fact in my case.
