    It's always a good day when you catch a swarm, but to be able to watch the queen walk in.....that doesn't happen often. Here's the latest from Studio Bee productions. God's peace to all, and Happy Easter.

    Dear Mr. Ed,
    Thank you for sharing your bee stories. You have kept me company tonight as I have input my last grades of the semester. I so appreciate the praise that you give God and His creations. It is a blessing to see man acknowledge that. Thank you for reminding me of God's grace. Thank you for your good stewardship to God's creations.

      Janelle, I wish you had been my teacher. Your students are truly blessed to have as a teacher someone who acknowledges the benevolence of our Creator. To live in the presence of my God is the source of my hope and joy. The bees are just another way of me seeing God in his creation, and participating in his handiwork. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    That's what I find beautiful about bees: they're a hint to the secret of life. You can't force them to do anything, all you can do is give them opportunity and hope that they take it.

Attraper des essaims est l'une des activités favorites et j'en ai pris plus de 30 l'année dernière. Je suis d'accord avec vous, attraper des abeilles, c'est comme recevoir des cadeaux du Père Noël, peut-être même mieux. I have to agree, that was cool stuff getting that footage. I've seen it before, but I never captured it on camera, it was truly a grace given. Pete, I have a buddy bee keeper in New York City that keeps bees on roof tops. His name is Tom Wilks, and he owns Wilks Apiary. He sells his honey as Zip Code honey as the hives are in different zip codes, a good idea he came up with to market his honey. So, if you want some really good honey, get in touch with Tom. That's very exciting to know you have ambitions on becoming a bee keeper yourself. I wanted to suggest to you to find a bee club in your area and join it now. You do not need to have bees to belong to a club, just a love for them. You will meet some really great folks who can give you valuable information on keeping bee in the area you live and that is very important. Folks up north keep bees different from folks down south, food and climate have everything to do with it. Let me know how you progress goes. God's peace.

    More often than not we get to busy to truly pay attention to what queens really do all day. Some people think a queen just mates, goes in the box and lays eggs her whole life, I say not even close. I have a few hives that Ive seen the queen come out and leave then return and do it five times in a day, and those where just the times I caught one sneaking out her window. It does beg the question, what are we interfering with when we cut off one of her wings? Bees are complex, we've not even begun to understand them but more so just try to harness them with no success whatsoever.I just let them be bees, its cool to watch them.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 років тому

      I agree 100%, I try not to interfer with my bees except when necessary. I leave them alone, and they do fine. No future in giving bees unnecessary stress. Thanks for watching and commenting. God's peace. Mr. Ed

      If you have a queen that likes to out for a little stroll, and a Marten or whatever spots her, your hive just lost their reason for living. If you have to clip a wing to make her stay home, do it. the workers are expendable, she is NOT. Eaven I know that much and I'm not eaven a bee keeper.

      I've got a good reason why it takes me a while to spot the queen, I'm old. Now the Dirt Rooster he doesn't have any good reason why he can't find a queen. I guarantee, he's still looking for her on this video even though I point her out. She is on the board at 2:08, the third bee from the top of the board. I don't spot her till 2:32, 24 seconds later. the queen has to be reluctant to go in. she has to smell the entrance very well to see if another queen is inside because she will die very quickly if another queen is inside. Just because the jeff knows no other queen is inside, does not translate to your future genetics living and being passed on if you don't know for sure. I understand completely mr Ed. She has to be sure then her genes will be passed on because she made sure. When looking for the queen on first entry look for the waggling rear. I saw it right away when she landed. This waving of the abdomen has something to do with preparing the egg laying machine to function correctly for first egg laying. None of this is easy.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      I was curious to find out when she landed on the box, so, as I was editing the video I kept backing the clip up till I first spotted her. In the video, it was 2:32 when I said "there she is," but in truth, she was already on the box at 2:08. She is the third bee from the top on the entrance board. It took me 24 seconds to finally see her. No wonder why i have trouble finding the queen in the hive. I need to get better. Always good to read your comments Pamela. Easter blessings. Mr. Ed

      That is exactly what she was doing. She was letting all the other bees know her location, and that this was going to be their new home. Let me know abouit your swarm trap. Happy Easter! Mr. Ed

      Sadly, no. We hit a financial wall this month with a tenant leaving without paying rent for two months. On the up side, it's been a really wet April, so I'm not sure it would be a good time to start a hive anyway. When it dries out a little, I may just try to make something out of what we have left over from last year's gardening.
      I hope you had a lovely Easter and I'll definitely let you know when I have a hive. We even have some hollow logs . . . I'll come up with something. We did have a nice Easter. The hummingbirds and blue jays are back already. Praise God, we have everything but money. I cannot complain at all.
