- Something I want to add after getting more comfortable with SA is that:
1. Heavenward flurry is your best friend when building gauge. My standard combo to go straight awakening is X- O- O- sidestep- O (u hit awakening here) then discharge. It still leave you with a big opening though but heavenward is the fastest way to build gauge.
2. I've also learned to love rising slash after an Overhead. It allows you to sneak in a hit before you have to sidestep out of an attack. Sometimes double slash will give you too big of an opening
3. Eva 5 is a bit of an overkill. 2~3 is where im sitting at rn

For me personally, i use evasion window up to only lv 3 because i get lv2 from mantle.
One thing I use a lot but was not mentioned in this video is the long window for evasion (hops) after sword mode attacks. I may wait for half of a second after each sword hit and still perform side step.
Also, I think move sets of axe mode can be utilized more and offer better attack range in some cases. For instance, you may use triangle+circle in axe mode to hit jho's chest. But since your video is about evading but not other aspects of switch axe playing, it's a great video. Thanks!
thank you for mentioning this! I forgot to cover this despite using the delayed sidestep a lot to dodge roars and other stuff. As for the axe upswing I guess I'm just too conditioned into not using the move because it launches people even when im playing solo. But it chains into a down swing giving u 2 of the most damaging moves in axe mode so USE IT PEOPLE LISTEN TO HIM. Appreciate the input!
honestly evade extender is superior you should go with that instead
Finally! a guide to really use switch axe, other guide only provides combo which is good but never taught anything about dodging. this is the thing i'm missing. Thanks a lot man

Dude, that's some super clean switchaxing if I've seen one. I've mained SA in World and I thought I was getting pretty decent by using the fade slash more to reposition, but I couldn't get past thinking that the hops were trash. You showed me there's much to learn, great video man.
This is exactly what I was looking for! I'm typically an Insect Glaive main however once I saw runs of good players playing Switch Axe I got really interested. First time I tried it I sucked bad but I had one lucky run hunting Anja that showed the Swaxe's massive potential and then after that I was hooked. I wanted to master this thing. When you play it right it rewards you royally. Massive numbers coming from literally everywhere on the monster, parts flying out of the damn sky and it is just a relentless slice fest once you get some momentum going. Before you even know it the monsters dead and the tail is flying offscreen in the midst of your onslaught... it's just incredible.

Making the from GS to SA is so jarring because you're used to a slower pace of play and this playstyle requires faster reactions.
Which I'm all for but I am finding evading a bit challenging.
Von how good have you gotten mate? I’m about to start learning how to do this to further improve my gameplay. Looks like an important tool if I want fast and clean hunts.

Evade distance or evade window, whats better for SA?
Primo guide :) I started using SA a lot (IG main), and needed to learn how to re-dodge everything since 95% of attacks are easily dodged with a vault w/IG.

youre damn right. I was initially gonna only talk about axe mode but I decided to go over the 3 swaxe playstyle and how each of them evade. but that also means that i have to start collecting clips again so stay tuned

Guides like this are what people really need. Other people have basic guides on what does what but this guide shows the advanced things you need to be doing. SA has always been my favorite melee weapon in world but there just wasn’t a good guide to show how to actually play with it. Thanks so much for the video!
ever since the first monster hunter i played (monhun tri) i picked up on how amazing evasion is, and i've always focused on an evasion playstyle, Barioth, Nargacuga, Legiana/Kushala these have been my used sets in MH. super underrated skill, why have tremor res? why have earplugs? why have so many skills? I don't need anything when i have ULTRA INSTINCT!

Found this video a while back but couldn’t find it again. Wanted to letchya know it was super helpful. If I could now, I’d mention temporal mantle effectively making zero sum discharge free damage (wasn’t out when this video came out and may or may not be common knowledge by now, but I haven’t seen enough people using the old swagaxe lately to know) and I’d mention the amazing synergy with evasion mantle strats like the ones provided here have, assuming you’re not running by TA rules or anything like that. Regardless, subscribed and keep up the good work.
Thank you for the kind words :DD and for pointing out the temporal mantle synergy. I didnt know about it since I only play arena but definitely keeping it in mind once behemoth comes out. Also this is more or less a dead channel now i'm just doing these videos for fun so dont bother subscribing :P. But just maybe ill finish up the HH guide we'll see

Tried this today, it’s pretty solid but I’m still getting use to dodging. I usually use the charge blade and long sword but switchaxe is fun. I use the Lunastra SA with full drachen and add in evade extender and evade window

Draw into sword attack, O, O, forward/side hop, O is best for quickly building your sword gauge. It's not that hard to pull off against even the most aggressive monsters. The only one I would not risk it against is tempered Deviljho.
yeah this is correct the jumping two hit builds the fastest meter and i just learned to like it recently

My Problem i want to dodge the roars from Monsters like rathalos Problem is he start the Animation i roll my Charakter got triggerd am i to slow or to fast with dat roll it would be helpfull if someone can explain ah ofc without evade window 3.

i was hoping you'd go into rolling through tremors and roars with switch ax and if evasion perks like distance or window were necessary to do so but it was still a nice video nonetheless
Cayden Lewis the roar cues varies from monster to monster. I’d say learning these ultimately boils down to experience. For example deviljho does a step then follows the roar about half a second later. Same with tremors every move is different. If you analyze it frame by frame you can get a number but it really just comes down to muscle memory
so could they all be evaded without evasion perks in distance and window? or are there certain roars that are unavoidable to dodge without them
Technically yes. For monsters like barroth or rathalos their roars happen in a fraction of a second so you can make do without evasion skills with enough practice. However diablos/ deviljho and some other monsters have a longer roar window meaning that even if you dodge the first .1 second of the roar u can still get caught in it. I bring evade 5 not just to dodge roars/tremors but also other attacks. But id say good speedrunners can make do with eva 3 or god tier japanese players dodging everything without. Evade distance doesnt affect window i dont like it for other reasons stated in the description
as a former bow main I find it hard to roll into attacks :(
Evade extender is must for switch axe as it does not have any dodge moves like foresight slash of long sword and tackle of great sword

It really depends on the monster but i rarely run both as thatll sacrafice too many dps skills. For monsters that have fast attacks like deviljho i like to take eva window to help me roll through his tremors and tackles. Monsters like uraagon who likes to run around and have delayed hitboxes Id take extender

I hated evasion because it made the game too easy but I guess desperate time calls for desperate measures. Great video! I've been evading (some) roars and attack with no evade windows at all. Perhaps its time... I also just really love Health boost.
