Rose anvil also did a video on a pair of Birkenstock Boots- the Goodyear welt is fake so they’re not resoleable just like the blundstones. They’re not the same model but I would assume the construction is the same.

It was nice to see you refrain from placing the boots on the table. I was raised with that being a big no-no.
I have never seen anyone else feel the same way. I'm in the military and live with all kinds of people, and no one cares about this, but it still bothers me to this day when I see boots on a table.

I have both, blundstone 550 and redbacks. The redbacks are much more comfortable, supportive, and sturdier. The redbacks are great for hikes and camping and outdoors. They just don't look the best dressed up. The blundstones look great dressed up but still do ok with the rest, just not as good as the redback.
I also have steel cap redbacks in suede. They are a great workboot and so easy to put on and take off.

I was a Blundstone fan for years, starting in the late 80s. I live in Minneapolis, close to Red Wing, MN (less than an hour’s drive). I have several Red Wing boots, including the Chelsea, and I have to say that they are on a whole different level. They are union made by hand and last forever because the leather is much thicker and they can be resoled in perpetuity. They are also extremely comfortable. I also think highly of the Birks, but the shape of the insole doesn’t work with my foot width. Currently, the Red Wings are only a bit more than Blundstones, and will last for decades rather than a year or two. The TPU soles of the Blundstones don’t last through extreme cold we have here…

    • @heystarfish100
      @heystarfish100 9 місяців тому

If I was one of their Union employees I would be embarrassed by the craftsmanship of my fellow members. I own several pair and when they need a replacement sole I think a non-Union cobbler will do a much better job than the drunken bastards did when the originals were sewn on. Thanks to their lack of quality my sole replacement costs will be significantly higher priced.

What birkenstock has going for them is a wide foot box. This keeps your feet in a more natural position. So many shoes/boots are tapperd and to narrow that will cause foot issues.

I've worn both Blundstone and Redbacks. If you have a high volume foot like high arches or just the top of your foot is high vertically, don't buy Redbacsk. It'll be extremely painful and it won't fit. Blundstones can accommodate big, high volume feet and are very comfy.

I’ve had my Blundstones about 2 years. They have been worn a reasonable amount. They look like they just came out of the box. It is worth noting, my favorite Chelsea is from Ecco. I own 2 pairs of the same Ecco boot. It has a crepe sole that is do damn durable. One pair I’ve beat the hell out of the other I don’t beat up and wear for dates and such. They no longer make the one I love so that caused me to look elsewhere. Enter Blunstones.
I was iffy on the esthetic but they are damn good. They have far surpassed my expectations. Also, they are quite water-proof or at least resistant. If we are talking about getting a work boot type thing then Red Wing is a good call. For comfort and durability Blundstones are fantastic. As I’ve seen in the comments you see that they can be resoled. They only criticism I have is how the seam comes down in the front hits the top of my foot was a little uncomfortable. That issue didn’t last long as it softened fast. I can’t do Birkenstocks. I do need a higher arch shoe but Birks are a no go for me. Love the videos and the channel. Cheers!

Also have the Blundstones and I love them. I use them in my garage workshop because they easy to dust off and surprisingly resistant to sparks, but they also became my go-to boot because they're just so damn comfortable and are still going after all the abuse I've put them though. Raining? Get the Blundstones. Travelling? Blundstones are wide and easy to slip on and off. Could be muddy/dusty/dirty? Get the Blundstones. I was looking at the Red Wings to replace them because I love chealseas, but I didn't pull the trigger yet because the Bluntstones are still so comfortable. They’re very comfortable and work in all seasons… even wear em with shorts in the garden in the summer. I believe they are completely waterproof as well since I was just shovelling for a few hours in 40cm of snow and was still dry despite ice freezing on my jeans hem. The outsole is still in perfect condition. Recommend the rustic brown colour as it seems to age better

They look like a blacksmith be it a little more pointy yet not as much as a cowboy boot. Fit like a glove, they do have the poron between the insole but the upper is traditionally built without synthetics. (people hate on synthetic parts but in a boot without laces you have to have some way of keeping the boot tight over time.) irregardless, my shoe options just opened up big time, as long as companies cater to women with size 11 feet!

Re: Ousourcing Blundstones made in "China" (Vietnam mostly I think, ut some in china) that was a cost saving measure when they stopped being made in Australia. Outsourcing for cost cutting and volume is always a bad sign! As an australian I wouldn't really trust Australian goods (RM Williams are fine but nothing compared to Trickers and other UK makers). Red Backs are pretty well regarded I guess. Probably the best 'Australian' brand is Thomas George collection - who simply commission and sell batches from Fugashin (a Vietnamese artisan shoe shop part of the thriving handmade shoemaking scene in SE asia - supporting your point that made in asian does not mean bad)
Portugal is not always a 'good' sign - it has some of the cheapest labour in europe and underpays immigrant workers (though not to the extent of "Made in Italy" sweatshops). HOWEVER Birkenstock still make all their sandals in Germany which is not the most cost effective. Portugal has a lot more access to bootmaking machinery and is the largest producer of quality cork. So in this case it is probably as much a decision about quality and logistics.

If the redwings had the mini lug sole, and were leather lined, I would have a pair for sure. To me all the man made lining around the toe, and foot bed seems like a cost saver. Which, they are not passing on to the customer.
It will put off some for sure. Oh and that sole wears quite quick, it did on my 875's. Gone in 18months.

The previous Red Wing Chelsea’s have a mini-lug (Red Wing Roccacia sole i think it’s called). It’s a leather outsole but with a mini lug half sole stitched on. I don’t have mine near me, but i think i recall it still has a canvas lining round the toe box/vamp area (which is similar to the iron rangers).

Red Wings are built like a tank, but the last they use makes for a very pronounced toe box. To me, that's clunky personified. My Chelsea's are Blundstones. I doubt I'll ever wear out the sole. I don't wear them every day and I have a desk job. I own two pair of Red Wings (Iron Ranger and Moc Toe), so I'm not anti-Red Wing.

Super rugged, very comfortable, look so much better than your standard Chelsea workboot,(ariat, Georgia, blundstone…etc). I don’t like the soft sneaker like footbed but other than that they check every box and for 200 bucks. You can wear them in harsh conditions but because of the longer toe shape they look great with some dark denim and crewneck sweater; crazy versatile. Plus they are Goodyear welted so you can have them resoled.

I think the future is in barefoot / zero drop shoes. Since they don't restrict our feet and fingers from moving the way the want to move. Currently in regular shoes the fingers are squashed and the for can't bend naturally.
I've been reading a lot of very positive comments, people saying that transitioning from that shoes to barefoot / zero drop shoes made a big difference, their feet hurting much less and such.
I am considering trying a pair of running shoes or boots like those, and I would suggest you try it too. And so you could compare them to these regular boots, and maybe make a video on it in the future.

Ooft. Honestly I think those things are the worst thing to happen in footwear in decades. They are terrible for the feet. Vibram lost a huge class action lawsuits a few years back when all their claims were shown to be false and they had to refund thousands of customers. I fell for the whole hype a few years back. And I tried. I really tried to get used to them. Did all the things that were recommended. Then the lawsuit news hit and they went in the bin.

      @@CeeAreDee
It's an interesting take on the subject. Although I do believe barefoot shoes are objectively better for the feet than the ones we use currently as shoes. The main thing I'm questioning about them is their disability (because if a shoe will die very quickly, that's definitely not good. But at the same time I'm thinking that depending on how quickly a barefoot shoe will die, who knows maybe it is still worth it to buy them even if more times, but if it's better for the feet, then it's ok).
There are many brands, by the way. That one that you mentioned is just one of them.
I'm researching this topic for the last few days, and, as I said, I read a lot of positive feedback on them, and the videos I find on them, I don't necessarily see some dum strange hipsters talking about them, but rather normal rational people seems to me, that seem as genuine in their opinions on them as one can be.
I believe you just you never appreciated the idea enough to actually try and stick/transition to such shoes, so you just didn't bother and left the idea. But as I said, it's an interesting take, it's useful to me, since it will help me to be more skeptical about what the people say about them in their videos, to keep me alert and figuring out how genuine one is vs maybe one just tries to make money through affiliate links etc .
