I know this video is an old one but i just found it , i had been looking at your channel a few years ago and lost your name. i really love your videos and yours is the only one i can actually learn from . thank you so much
I want to let you know that I really like your videos and I am continuing to learn. I've only been knitting about a year and you explain things so clearly and go at just the right speed for me to follow and get the right techniques. Thanks so much for all the time you spend putting all of this on here for those of us trying to learn. Melissa
Thank you very much for your prompt reply I will try for 60" circular needle Though I have knitted many items but this is the first project a triangle one No doubt you are a very good teacher who comes forward to clear the doubts Thank you very much
Love your teaching style...it all makes sense after I watch one of your videos. I'm almost done with my first shawl...something I've wanted to make for years. Many thanks !!
Your style of knitting, the way you hold the yarn and the turns u make will be the main reason I will watch your video over and over. I'm self taught and it's just very difficult to yarn my way. It's going to take me months to break out of my technique and adopt yours. Thank you
i have been watching knitting videos and yours is my ultimate favorite. easy to follow. i have never knitted before. i tried making a scarf it came out not too well, but i felt i could knit a hat, i think i did ok even though it has a few holes, i'm proud of it. i'm going to try the shawl now. thank you
Thank you! I started my first triangle shawl yesterday. But the YO is much easier. I'll try this one next time. I've been crocheting since age 5 but really want to learn socks, beanies..I already make, and several other knitted projects. Your video was clear and easy. Thanks again from NM.
Thanks for the upload! My first shawl is just finished. I trimmed it with a crochet lace border and then put fringes on it. Today I'm gonna start knitting my 2nd shawl, because my daughter would also like one :)
I like this shawl pattern(s). I now have a great ideal for a wonderful Christmas gift for my sister next year. She loves shawls and frankly having just taken up knitting I felt really intimidated by every other shawl pattern I have come across. Thank you again for inspiring me. Please keep these wonderful videos coming.
i will add my comments also,, thank you for showing me how to do a triangle knit, never did one and i like how you teach us how to do a triangle... many thanks
I think I am about 9yrs too late but I love the way you teach. So laid back lol…like me ahh just use any yarn and needles. I am a beginner and so far I have just winged it with my projects but they have turned out ok so far!
Thank you for a wonderful demonstration. You take it nice and slow and I appreciate that. Knitting and I have a love hate relationship. This helps a lot.
+Al Melendez yes you can use any other stitch you want. Basically, increase until you have enough sts to work at least one repeat of the stitch, then you add more repeats of the pattern as you have enough sts to do so.
Depends on what yarn you use and how big you make the shawl. In a fingering, sock or lace yarn, or even a light worsted you should be able to knit a decent sized shawl. If you use a heavier weight yarn you'll most likely want to get a longer needle.
Hi, i just wanted to say that you are absolutely amazing. I learning so much from you, pleaseeee dont ever stop! I had a question, i wanted to do a triangle shawl using old shale stich but i have no idea how... I will appreciate it if you could help me with the pattern.... Many many thanks!
I LOVE ur videos,I have been watching knitting videos and yours are my favorite!!!! i did the spiral scarf which turned good except a little short, hehe i cant wait to start this project!!!! thank you soo much for posting these videos!!!! =)
I don't remember exactly. You need to knit a gauge swatch using the specific yarn and needles you want to use and go from there. Since everyone knits differently, and can have a different gauge even using the exact same needles and yarn, you might use more or less yarn than someone else. You could probably get a decent sized shawl with a skein of Red Heart Super Saver.
OMG I knit continental (I think that's the same way as you) and I have never seen a YO like that, so easy! I feel so awkward when I YO and it's so simple the way you do it thanks so much!
Rachel McCord basically you increase until you have enough stitches to work the required repeat for your chosen stitch. You may find the shawl class by Miriam Felton useful on Craftsy. She goes into detail on this topic.
Great video thanks, can you tell me I feel really dumb right now, lol, but if I were to make a triangle shawl with the feather and fan or for that matter any other stitch how do I start and is increasing the same. I mean if the stitch requires multiples of 18 or whatever do I just add a knit stitch and a yo then knit the stitch(feather and fan ) till the end of the row every row? Gosh thanks for the patience I am so hardheaded about these things.
Love this video. I keep forgetting to yo at some point and can't figure out how to fix it so I don't have to undo it and start all over. Can you tell me how I can be checking as I go along to make sure I haven't forgotten or how to fix it from where I am? Thanks
Thank you so much for the tutorials ..they are very interesting and great options for knitting shawls ...can this technique be applied to other knit stitch patterns when making shawls? ...
For your second demonstration of knitting three then yarn over then knitting again til there is three on the other side and yarning over, how much yards would take to complete the project? Thanks
Pianist702 It depends on how big you want your shawl to be, and what needle size/gauge you get. Take a look at this shawl pattern from Berroco using that yarn, it uses four hanks. www.berroco.com/patterns/duchess
I have a question? How would I knit a shawl wear you can wear it around like a poncho. I am wanting to make one for my niece but i'm not sure how exactly the best way to do it would be?
+deeannmariee It depends on whether you use lace weight, DK, worsted, etc., how long you continue to increase, how big you want the shawl. Usually you'll have several hundred stitches.
So pretty thank-you for sharing! I found some on ravelry. Its hard because mostly want you to buy them! Can I use this pattern for baby blanket for newborn?
Hi! I'm toying with the idea of getting a set of Cubics . . . but a lot of reviewers say they break very easily. Have you had any breakage on your Cubics? Thanks.
In the late 1970's I had knitted a Drop Stitch shawl for my Mother. She Loved it!The pattern was on the paper sleeve around the yarn skein ~{Coats& Clark Red Heart Worsted} and as fate would have it I have lost the pattern and have been unable to duplicate or find the shawl pattern on the internet. I have seen similar ones but prefer the vintage one. Would you or anyone have a copy of the pattern I am looking for. I would very much appreciate any help. Thank You in advance! Love your Videos I knitwithcatfur, Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge! :D :D :D :D
Thank you so much. i was so called knitting challenged, but the firt shawl you knitted hlp m alot... but got a question.. dose it matter what colors you use in this shawl?.. I have two colors that I want in the shawl...
If i dont own a large needle with that wire connecting it like you have is there something that i can use to hold my work? I really want t make it ... this is the only pattern i found that i dont hav to pay for and it looks great.
Straight (single pointed) needles come in a variety of lengths: 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 16 inches, so you should be able to fit a sufficient number of stitches for a decent sized shawl onto the longest straights using fine weight yarn. And have you looked at Ravelry? There are over 15,000 free shawl patterns there, you might like some of those too.
Madam every thing is clear except one How much should be the hight and circumference This is my first project knitting a shawl So please help me 2) the circular needle may be small is there any way to extend ?
This is really just a basic guide - you can make shawls as big as you like. You can "try it on" as you go, keeping in mind that it will be a bit bigger after blocking. Yarn weight/needle size and your gauge play a role as well in the size. Circular needles come up to 60 inches; I am not aware of any way to join them to make longer needles, but I can't imagine any shawl needing a needle longer than that. There are a lot of patterns to be found online, you may wish to search through some of them to get an idea of yarn weight/needles used for the size shawl you would like to make. My personal preference for shawls is DK weight yarn or lighter, and I find that a 40 inch circular is sufficient.
how would you use a second color of yarn with the knit 3 yarn over and knit pattern for the thicker border? I want to use yellow as the border and red as the center of the shawl and not having to add yarn every time? Any thought on how to use a second yarn for the outer border?
You can knit the border separately then attach it to the body of the shawl. Or, after finishing the shawl body, you can pick up and knit around with the border color.
1994abbygirl Look online at Jimmy Beans Wool, Paradise Fibers, WEBS, Yarn Market, Fabulous Yarn, Knitty Noddy, even eBay for circular needles. There are oodles of places that sell circular needles in all sizes and lengths.
Perhaps one of these will help: ua-cam.com/video/zTd5QKrESiM/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/9MXT2mrR894/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/PK-Ct09IxwM/v-deo.html
Two things: 1. I wanted to do the shawl no.3 u showed with the 5 stitches, i started with one stitch (slipknot) and increase up to 5 and started the shawl, OBS! when i increase i yarned over the opposite way around so i would get the hole, just a nice fyi for everybody that wants a pointy end. 2. I have 80 cm circlular needles, but will that be enough? when i think bout the math i don't really think its enough - it would be nice if some1 had the answer :P Great video, thank you
Hi, I'm a beginner in knitting but I really liked yours "sailor's knot" tutorial and was wondering if it's possible to use it in this "triangle shawl". How to start and keep going with stitches? Thank you! :)
+Idalia as Hi! Basically, once you've made enough increases so that you have as many stitches as required for whatever stitch pattern you are using, you can add another repeat of the stitch. What I do is use stitch markers to sandwich my increases, and then once I have enough to add a repeat of the stitch pattern, I reset the markers. I personally like to do top down triangle shawls, starting with a garter tab cast on, but you can start at the bottom and go up. Here is a link to a video showing how I use stitch markers to keep track of my increases so I know when to add another pattern repeat, and a video for the garter tab cast on. ua-cam.com/video/jkFK7XGIR4k/v-deo.html and the garter tab cast on: ua-cam.com/video/VH5qAG0qODU/v-deo.html Also, here is a link to some cheat sheets that might help you out. They are worked in garter stitch, but you can use any stitch pattern you like: www.laylock.org/blog/2011/05/free-shawl-knitting-cheat-sheet/
You have made this very, very easy to do! But I have one question-you know how you've done the first yarn-over? Well, I knit English style, so how do I do the first yarn-over in my case? All of your methods of knitting a shawl are very easy-it's just the only one about the first yarn-over for English style knitting. Update: I believe that I figured it out.
Did you get it? Just make a yarn over as you would normally make a yarn over anywhere else along the row. It can be a little tricky when it is at the beginning though, it helps to keep a finger on it so it doesn't get away from you :-)
@@iknitwithcatfur Yes Ma'am, and I am really impressed with the way you showed us how to do this! Your continental knit is very graceful and beautiful! Thank you again!
+Julia Orlando I'm afraid I don't remember how much yarn I used. It also depends on what weight yarn you use, the bulkier the yarn, the quicker it will grow :-) Check out Ravelry, you can get a good idea of how much yardage you'll need using the particular weight you want to use.
Hey! I'm a beginning knitter and was reading through the comments when I found that you actually might need to increase your rows every other stitch. Is that true?
I would not increase every other STITCH, but you can make increases on every other ROW. Increasing on every row will grow the shawl more quickly, while increasing on every other row will go slower. On the shawls that I make for myself or for my patterns, increases are usually made on every right side row only. Check out this basic shawl shape info, it is handy for showing how many increases and where they are placed determine the shape of the shawl you end up with www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/5-basic-shawl-shapes-cheat-sheet
Can I ask what gauge yarn and size needle you are using? Would you recommend going up a needle size to what the yarn recommends to get more of a drape?
The Diamond Mulberry Merino is an aran weight yarn and the Patons Classic is worsted; I used US 10 needles, Cubics from Knitter's Pride. If you're following a pattern, I would just go with what is required, since the designer should have taken that into account. If you are winging it, or there is no recommendation in the pattern, the best thing to do is start with the recommended needle size on the ball band; knit a swatch and block it if you plan to block the finished item. Then see how you like the feel and drape of the swatch. If it is too tight for your liking, go up a needle size or two. If you're knitting lace, you'll definitely want to use a larger needle than recommended so that the stitches open up when blocked. Also, different fibers have different drape qualities; merino does have nice drape in the lighter weights, however alpaca, silk, soybean and milk fibers have much more drape because they don't have the 'memory' of merino wool. So, that is something else to keep in mind and is where making a swatch comes in handy.
It really depends on how big you want it, the weight of yarn you're using and what your gauge is. One thing you can do is put a long life line in, take out the needle and try it on. If you're happy with the size, (keeping in mind it will grow a bit when blocked) put your needle back in and bind off.
Hey, I have a weird question maybe you can answer. I had a pattern for a triangle shawl. Right side rows were K 2, yo, knit to center, yo before and after center stitch, K to last 2 stiches, yo, K last 2. Wrong side rows were purl. I did not end up with a triangle, but with a diamond shape. Any idea what I did wrong?
When you say diamond, I picture something with a point at the bottom and a point at the top, which shouldn't be what you got using those instructions. Sounds like you started decreasing after a certain point to get the diamond point at the top.
Thanks so much for getting back to me! No, I did zero decreasing. That's why it's weird. In looking at your tutorials, I notice you give the bottom point a good tug after each row. Could that be the difference?
Nancy Campbell It's worth a try, although I've never had a diamond when not pulling the bottom to straighten. Quite unusual :-) I assume you are working bottom up?
Yes, bottom up. Right sides with 4 increases -- 2 in middle, and 1 on ea. end -- and wrong sides just purling, right until I cast off. At which point I discovered I had a kite-shaped shawl :( Very baffling! Anyway, it's a chance to tell you how much I enjoy your tutorials and your teaching style. You are a wonderful mentor.
When using the first style, (K1 YO knit the rest of the row) to make a square instead of triangle, how would I knit the decreasing half to keep the same pattern on the edge? Thanks!
Check out this dishcloth pattern, it starts out as a triangle by increasing like the shawl, then decreases like a top down triangle, giving you a square. You can use this method to make a square shawl www.lakebreeze.org/knitting.htm
There is no definitive answer for that. The number of skeins required for any shawl depends on multiple factors, such as your gauge, the weight of the yarn you use and even the stitch pattern, not to mention not all companies put out skeins of the same size. Company A worsted skein may have 250 yards, Company B worsted skein may have 400 yards, for example; so it is difficult to put a number on how many skeins you need. Lighter weight yarn (lace/sock weight) will require more yarn, heavier yarn (DK/worsted) will require less. Check out shawl patterns on Ravelry, or even the company website for the brand of yarn you plan to use. If there is a shawl you like, it will tell you how much yarn is required and you can use that as a starting point to determine how much yarn you need.
Sorry, I don't remember. I usually like to use as long a needle as possible though so I can spread it out as I go and block it so I can put it on and see how I like the size. You don't have to do that of course, that is just what I like to do.
***** Do you think it's possible to knit a triangle shawl on 14" straight needles? I hate using circular needles for flat knitting because it's so hard to deal with the cord when you turn the work, my cords always get twisted around and it's really irritating and frustrating to deal with. How many stitches do you think a 14" needle could hold?
ilurvemv You could probably squeeze it on if you use lace weight yarn. I always use circular needles, so can't say how many stitches will fit. I don't know what lengths are available, but maybe you could use jumper needles to fit more stitches on, like these www.patternworks.com/productdetail/265/CLOVER-20--FLEX-JUMPERS.htm

Where do you get your needles, and what are your favorites?!
Excellent video tutorial, thanks🌹
Thank you for clearly explaination..it helps me much..
I have a set of circular needles, but nothing that even comes close to 32".. can you find them somewhere..mine are the screw on type! Thanks!
1994abbygirl Look online at Jimmy Beans Wool, Paradise Fibers, WEBS, Yarn Market, Fabulous Yarn, Knitty Noddy, even eBay for circular needles. There are oodles of places that sell circular needles in all sizes and lengths.
Love it. I think even I can do this. Thank you.
Tnank you so much for sharing your talent.
Can you please explain how to add a new ball of yarn on this shawl. Without a knot .I'm not sure how to add the new one or where? Thank you

A very good tutorial
Great tutorial!! Thanks so much.
Two things:
2. I have 80 cm circlular needles, but will that be enough? when i think bout the math i don't really think its enough - it would be nice if some1 had the answer :P
Great video, thank you
Hi, I'm a beginner in knitting but I really liked yours "sailor's knot" tutorial and was wondering if it's possible to use it in this "triangle shawl".

Also, here is a link to some cheat sheets that might help you out. They are worked in garter stitch, but you can use any stitch pattern you like: www.laylock.org/blog/2011/05/free-shawl-knitting-cheat-sheet/
+iknitwithcatfur Thank you!!! :)
How long are your size 10 needles?
How much ball of yarn did you use to make your shawl?
how much yardage is needed for a shawl of the size in the video?
Thanks!
I'm knitting a shawl on size 8 circular needle with kfb all rows .how many stitches do I need before binding off
It really depends on how big you want it, the weight of yarn you're using and what your gauge is.
Hi can you teach us how do this with crochet? Thanks
ERICKA BREALEY I do not crochet much except to put simple borders on my knitting. Try Crochet Geek, she is an expert in crochet.
Approximately how many skeins does a normal Shaw take
There is no definitive answer for that.
How long is the needle you're using, is it a 32"?
Sorry, I don't remember. I usually like to use as long a needle as possible though so I can spread it out as I go and block it so I can put it on and see how I like the size. You don't have to do that of course, that is just what I like to do.

Do you think it's possible to knit a triangle shawl on 14" straight needles? I hate using circular needles for flat knitting because it's so hard to deal with the cord when you turn the work, my cords always get twisted around and it's really irritating and frustrating to deal with. How many stitches do you think a 14" needle could hold?
ilurvemv You could probably squeeze it on if you use lace weight yarn. I always use circular needles, so can't say how many stitches will fit. I don't know what lengths are available, but maybe you could use jumper needles to fit more stitches on, like these www.patternworks.com/productdetail/265/CLOVER-20--FLEX-JUMPERS.htm

I've seen these needles but I didn't know what they're called or used for till now. What exactly is the purpose of jumper needles?
ilurvemv To hold more stitches, some people use them rather than circular needles.
Thankyou for this video!
Beautiful!
