To provide a little context to the lyrics, Hank isn't necessarily comparing the country lifestyle to the big city in a derogatory manner. The man who was murdered that he is referring to was an actual person, and a close friend to Hank Williams Jr. His name was Michael and he, in fact, was robbed and killed for a petty amount of cash in a convenient store by a hardened criminal (who was never caught, I'd like to add). The majority of what Hank writes about is literal personal experiences. A song I'd recommend reviewing is "All In Alabama", which is about him surviving a 540' foot fall down the side of Ajax mountain when hunting with friends. The signature hat, beard and sunglasses is to conceal his scars, which only become more visible with time. You'll notice that one side of his face is higher than the other, which is due to plastic surgery. He had 17 major operations following the accident, and awoke from his coma to Johnny and June Carter Cash at his bedside (June Carter was his godmother). Another great song would be "Man Of Steel", which is related to his legendary father dying when Hank was only 3. Incredible writing with meat on the bone.
I know I am a few years late, this just popped up on my feed for some reason, I hit the comments section to say what you said, and was happy to see others knew this, Hank writes and sings about real life experiences, something most metal heads wont ever get, Hank was never one to set around looking for something to write about, then searching for something that rhymed with it like most metal songs, Hank would simply remanence and then make a song out of his memories.. Ryan Upchurch does the same thing, which is why he is so liked by his fans, his songs speak of him and his life experiences rather than just arranging popular words in a way that rhymed with catchy hook, .. These kinds of songs always have a long life, they age well and always connect with the listener, because they are real life experiences instead of just a made up story
Thank you for explaining that to everyone. People jump to conclusions with they’re being defensive for no reason. That response bothered me. It’s also odd that 2 years later you have people leaving the cities like crazy because of crime. It’s traders from everywhere you go. But it matters how the town react to that crime.
i am from west virginia and we are full of small towns and good country folks. Hank jr is a legend. He has recorded over 70 albums and tore up country music in the 70s and 80s. Dinasaur is one of my favorites. I think you would enjoy the lyrics.
I'm sitting here in my living room looking out the window looking at deer walking out of the swamp, working on a set of arrows for the sinew backed bow I made. There's a stream that runs by the house so big deal if we lose electricity and the well pump stops. I know how to skin a buck and get food from the woods, trap, and stay warm. I get this song.
I don’t think he was necessarily saying that about his friend being mugged could only happen in the city. It was a true story, that happened in his life. And I don’t think he was saying country life or raising is better than any other. At least not in my opinion. I think he was just speaking about what he know’s. Hank Jr. is one of my favorite artist of any genre as I tend to like a little of all genre’s. But country and southern rock are definitely my sweet spot. And I appreciate you or anyone giving a genre that isn’t their “sweet spot” a chance. As their is something that can be enjoyed and learned from every genre/type of music. And if your open or it, you can find something that speaks to you in every one of them. I enjoyed your reaction very much, and keep it up. Peace brother.
Steven Kyle first guy to visit him after his accident too! Johnny loved him and helped him create his own song and tell his mom to stop trying to make him cover his dads songs
Johnny Cash was not his Godfather. June was his Godmother because Audrey and June were friends when Jr was born. However, Johnny Cash wasn't even heard of when Jr was born. June got to know Audrey through the Carter family and Hank Sr's affiliation with the Opry.
this song is who I am..Im from georgia..grew up in the country.....cow farms.....that is what raised me...now...things did change.I wont go into that but this IS who I am...we love America....we love you....and we love america....this song is is our anthem.......
Bocephus "you can't starve us out, you can't make us run" no truer words spoken.....country folk can survive without government....living off the land as it's supposed to be. Greets from a Georgia home grown peach 😁
Nobody has ever got killed for any random reason where I live , now ..Ppl have been killed but there has always been personal component involved. I agree that nobody is better than anyone else but living in the country in my opinion is about as good as it gets and like Hank said We can survive , maybe not forever but definitely longer. That's not saying all country folks could , just the ones of us blessed enough to know how to live off the land and because we can do that then our neighbors can survive too. We may not have all the lights and tall buildings but we definitely take care of each other
Hank Williams Jr. belonged to a kind of country music called Outlaw country music. There are a few of the Outlaw group but it was Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, maybe Willie Nelson. I can't remember them all now. That death of his friend is a true story. So it probably affected him.
Heard you say that his delivery reminded you of Johnny Cash . Bocephus and Cash has a great friendship especially when Bocephus was at a you age, they used to go around digging up civil war artifacts on the battlefields around Nashville.
This song was released in 1982. I remember it well. I was raised in a small Textile Community in the south where we had a company store that was owned by the mill. We had no car in my familiy until I was a teenager since the community was pretty much self sustaning, We only left the community to go pay bills in town in which me and my dad walked five miles to when it was time to go pay bills. No cell phones or internet in those days. i would charge candy, soda's on my dad's account at the company store and my mom would make me pull my red wagon to the store a few blocks away as a young child with a grocery list to give the stocker and he would round up what was on the list. My dad worked in the mill over 45 years. My grand dad retired from there and I worked in the mill for over 15 years until, like many mills down in the south, it was shut down. I later moved to the country about 8 miles from my cotton mill community where i was raised. Most cotton mill communities were not in or even near a city. Our small town was like 5 miles away. So, you have one company store, one or two resurants, two or three churches and thats it. Even the wooden houses where built by the mill and sold cheap to mill workers. The old mill i worked in was built in 1902 and stopped running in 1996 when i was one of the last workers to be laid off. It was stripped of anything of value and is standing in ruin and rubble with just the elevator towers, the smoke stack and one or two walls standing and grown over. The sad thing is, there were two other sister mills in my town that was shut down and in ruin along with a few more in my county gutted out like hundreds of mills down in the south around that time. Textiles was our livelyhood like coal was to the miners in West Virginia. Now it's all gone and we had to find work where we could.
I was born and raised in Tennessee. I was the only girl, with 3 brothers. We were raised on a farm, so there's nothing we can't grow and we could definitely survive off the land. The only thing about us country folks is you just have to get used to the "crazy" relatives. Everybody's got one in their family (there's 2 in mine actually) LOL we don't hide them away...we parade them on the front porch for everyone to see. People around here just ask which side of the family the crazy ones are on LOL
I think you'd really enjoy "You Never Call Me By My Name" by David Allen Coe, "Mamma Tried" by Merl Haggard, or "The Only Hell My Momma Ever Raised" by Johnny Paycheck.
You talk about his Nick name. The Rock starts from the 80s tried to party as hard as him. Actual original Van Hallen group called there parties Bo...... Mode.
This song was written in a different time than now, its pretty old song. When he wrote the song, there was a friend killed that way. Back in those days, NYC use to have a lot more violence than they do now..NYC has made a lot of changes since back then..I do know many of Hanks songs are based on events in his life or of those he knows.. I do not think it was a hit against NYC or comparing...I think it just is what is, no matter where it would have happened..Nowadays, people are more offended by terms like guns, or hunting etc also..So the point here was, country boys can survive, and his friend was a country boy who made it big in the city but died, and he just wants revenge for his friends life...Back then when I was a kid, bad stuff just hardly ever happened out here in the country where I live, maybe every few years some dude beat up someone. My nearest little town, is so small with one store, a post office and 4 churches and a park, and a bunch of old wood framed houses...Every house is a drug house, a meth house now..I can not go to my little country town no more...I have to drive 30 miles to a bigger town, that is much safer in the actual shopping districts etc. But it does have a bad neighborhood across the river though...Hanks song was written 40 years ago..
It's true he was comparing lifestyles but he is also telling you what he would do to the guy that killed his friend. Beechnut is chew tobacco and you get the juice from it in your eyes and it's as bad as red peppers. So not only was he gonna shoot him, he was gonna blind him too. Didn't matter what they did or where they came from. They were true friends. And we take care of friends. We love Bocephus. He's from my part of the country. I'm an hour from Nashville Tennessee (Music City). He's had a lot to deal with in his life and lesser men wouldn't have made it. He's telling the truth about the way it is where we come from. We are old ways and we can take care of ourselves. Enjoyed your reaction.❤😊
Went to WV twice and went on the Hatfield McCoy trails and the second time I went we heard sirens go off every 10-15 minutes and afterwards and large blast.
WV hillbilly here , lived my entire life (60 years) within 5 miles of where I started life on this earth . Had 10 coal miners in my immediate family . I was a railroad conductor for 40 years ,running coal trains . Hanks song is one of our defiance ...As in Don't Fuck with us . My point, u didnt really like , as you put it, comparing lives lived life experiences, HOWEVER Jr at no point compared people's lives whether they be city or country. I gave you the background story to let you know that he has in no way ever been racist but he is misunderstood
My dad is was from Centralia, WV. He lost two of his brothers from Black Lung working in the coal mines. Fortunately my dad choice the military of instead the coal mines.
I love the way you describe this song! I listen to a lot of reaction videos I love your honesty. Country music is my back bone so this is a staple song for me. Keep it up! Ya got a new subscriber here.
you would like Brad Paisley "SHE'S EVERYTHING" & Earl Thomas Conley "HOLDING HER AND LOVING YOU" Hank Jr. "THE AMERICAN WAY" I too am from WV Little town up from Moundsville WV called Benwood but now live in Pgh
I have lived in McMechen for 40 years ,but grew up at the top of Benwood hill my 1st 20 years . Think that qualifies as country . Attended Sherrard elementary and Jr high.
His father nick named him bocephus he got that from a vantrillic doll that was named bocephus i think it was on ghe minnie pearl show on grand ole opry
While i was ckin out ur reaction to hank jrs -country boy can survive-you said ur wifes fom west virginia, and i thot of the small town my family is from-mason wv,middleport ,pomeroy, letart falls, rutland, ohio. Im pure hilbilly n proud to be one,i love rock too,but was raised on country, like ur chann, and how you tell the story behind what you re thinking,👍👍from sunny fl,
you sow your field or you don't eat, you learn that ain't no one coming to help ya! you develop a mentality of "you want somethin' ya better go get it, it ain't comin to ya!", I couldn't live in the city, props for those that do, but me, I would rather be down at a river party with tiki lamps and music out of my truck over a night club or bar!, but to each his own!
Actually one IS better than the other, city folk are all packed in together like sardines and reliant on grocery stores and money. Country folk are rural and self sufficient and self reliant and can get by on their own, make almost anything we need, and I guaranty you when the pandemic hit city folk were more worried and had a tougher time than country folks. And if shit keeps going like it looks like it is going the country is the place to be. I’d also venture the guess that with all that said and how spread out country folks are we pose a bigger threat to the government and they most likely know that too.
Just watched several of your country reactions. If you liked Miranda Lambert, check out some of her stuff with a bit more edge - Kerosene, Gunpowder & Led, Vice, Mama's Broken Heart. Little Red Wagon is also fun if you like her look. Pistol Annies is a group she is in and they have some fun song too. Lots of good country that has the grit of Hank.
Is she from Welch? or McDowell County. Cause what you said resonates with the whole coal mine boom, then the decline. Welch WV born and raised BTW Country folks can survive!
I'm from west Virginia my dad was a coal miner all my uncles and my grandpa too so you jist throw out the name of that town and we'll know where it is 10 4

"I like ACDC and ZZTop / Bocephus, Beasties and the kings of rock (Run dmc) / Skynyrd, Seger, Limp, Korn n Stones / David Allan Coe and No Show Jones (George Jones) ... I like Johnny Cash and Grandmaster Flash" Hank w MNF was cancelled before cancel culture even started lol. Talking down on the savior Barry Soetoro, that there was blasphemy. And Hank is a huge Steelers fan as well P.s. It's just an anecdotal story. He's proud of how he grew up and has every right to be. Hank damn near lost his life out in the country falling 500ft off a mountain in Montana...also an anecdotal story that upon its mention need not make country folks butthurt 🤷

Son of one. Our town dried up in the 80s when the mines left. Eccles only claim to fame one of biggest mine accidents in us history.
I came from a family lone full of coal mine workers had a uncle my granny’s brother died of black lung from the coal mines
My wife is from a VERY small town in West Virginia :-D

My mom grew up in a West Virginia coal town and both my granddads were miners at one time or another.
I'm one of those country boys and if\when the shit hits the fan we'll survive. My dad taught me how to live with what is available.

He never liked being classified as country or rock, hell even had a rap tune while playing the blues and many many more styles during his illustrious career that began at age 8 with more than 6 decades of hits , #1 singles, albums of the year, 5 consecutive Entertainer of the Year, Videos, Duets, Friend to Numerous people from ALL walks of life, Sugarcoates Nothing, most talented musician whose resamay is as long and respected as the stars that appeared in his " All My Rowdy Friends are Coming Over Tonight Video from the early 80's and lord knows I could continue writing for the next year and not record the many things (both good and bad) that make the most BADASS, INFLUENTIAL, #1 ON THE , I DID IT MY WAY SO TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT AND IF YOU DONT LIKE HANK JR YOU CAN KISS OUR ASS SHORT LIST , A MAN WHO WROTE AND PERFORMED THE LIFE HE LIVED EVERYDAY IN A WAY THAT HIS LEGION OF FANS UNDERSTOOD BECAUSE THEY TOO LIVED MANY OF THE SAME EXPERIENCES, SO TALENTED ITS BEYOND MEASURE AND NEARLY DYING WHILE LIVING IT ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, SIMPLY PUT........The Best, 2nd to NONE!! My point, u didnt really like , as you put it, comparing lives lived life experiences, HOWEVER Jr at no point compared people's lives whether they be city or country. I gave you the background story to let you know that he has in no way ever been racist but he is misunderstood
As a fellow Steelers fan that was born n raised in Nashville ya can't go wrong with Bocephus.
My dad is was from Centralia, WV. He lost two of his brothers from Black Lung working in the coal mines. Fortunately my dad choice the military of instead the coal mines.
I love metal, hardcore and punk but you just cannot beat a bit of Hank Williams and Lynard Skynard.
Greetings from the UK!
😍
Sooners here but trust in your cowpoke qb he will comes in clutch... Trust me, he was the only qb I didn't want our D to Play. Great reaction 🤝👌

Fun fact Johnny cash was his godfather
Check out his song "I Got Rights".
As great as the lyrics are, I'm blown away by the seriously nasty guitar work going on.

He fell off a mountain and almost died. Country!!!!

One life is better than the other
Im a diary farmer in pa and I love Hank williams
you sow your field or you don't eat, you learn that ain't no one coming to help ya! you develop a mentality of "you want somethin' ya better go get it, it ain't comin to ya!", I couldn't live in the city, props for those that do, but me, I would rather be down at a river party with tiki lamps and music out of my truck over a night club or bar!, but to each his own!
Johnny Cash and Waylon were his godfathers
Hank was not comparing. He was telling a true story of his friend and stated that he would like to shoot that person with his 45. Listen again.
Like seeing young people understanding this
Actually one IS better than the other, city folk are all packed in together like sardines and reliant on grocery stores and money.
June Carter Cash is actually his Godmother!
Metallica is favorite band. And I don’t listen to country music, but I can listen to Hank Williams, Jr.
That was actual footage of Hank Williams Jr friend getting stabbed.
new fan of yours. Hank Jr is legend. I'd love to see you react to some Adam Calhoun. Start with Die Tonight or Clean Money.
My family is from the mines on the Kentucky, West Virginia border...
If you're into metal and like this, try Hank Jrs son. Hank 3. Long hauls and close calls.
Im a property of biker wife.. AND I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!
He did make the song in the 1980"s dude
Beckley west virgina here
My great grandparents lived in Beckley!
Let's go steelers!!!!!! West Virginia born and raised!!!!
" Had a Bochephus sticker on his 442 " Primus
That's the lyric! I could never figure it out as much as i love primus!
IDK if you mentioned it but Bocephus is a Steelers fan too
Johnny and June Cash were his godparents
Is she from Welch? or McDowell County. Cause what you said resonates with the whole coal mine boom, then the decline. Welch WV born and raised BTW Country folks can survive!
I’m sure I would know the town! Born and raised in WV!
Is that small town in WV Webster? Sounds a lot like it
No, Russian Roulette here....this song is just good ole' get down ....HOME LOVIN AND STAND UP FOR FFA !!

"I like ACDC and ZZTop / Bocephus, Beasties and the kings of rock (Run dmc) / Skynyrd, Seger, Limp, Korn n Stones / David Allan Coe and No Show Jones (George Jones) ... I like Johnny Cash and Grandmaster Flash"
Hank w MNF was cancelled before cancel culture even started lol. Talking down on the savior Barry Soetoro, that there was blasphemy. And Hank is a huge Steelers fan as well
P.s. It's just an anecdotal story. He's proud of how he grew up and has every right to be. Hank damn near lost his life out in the country falling 500ft off a mountain in Montana...also an anecdotal story that upon its mention need not make country folks butthurt 🤷
Hi Brother You' ll Love Ward Davis " BLACK CATS AND CROWS" TY
We take up for each other
Yep🤔😉
you would LOVE Jamey Johnson "CAN'T CASH MY CHECKS" video from Farm AID 2018
