If you can grow it or kill it or catch it or know what wild plants can be eaten, you don't need grocery stores. After natural disasters you see people in the cities not knowing what to do except kill each other over a loaf of bread. Country folks don't do that. They don't need to. That is what this song means to me. Self sufficiency and not needing to rely on others.
A little background on Hank Jr, or Bocephus as he is also known. His father is legend in music. Hank Jr wears the beard and shades due to scars he got when he fell 525 feet down the side of Ajax Mountain in August of 1975. I believe it took something like 17 major surgeries to put his face back together. He is the 1st 5 time winner of Entertainer of the Year. And just this past August he was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame, joining his father who was elected in 1960 as part of the hall's 1st class. Dive into the Hank Jr rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed. He's been putting out albums since 1964 and still tours today.
I'm from Tennessee and I know I'm country, but I really didn't know the full extent to what all that entailed until I became good friends with some people that moved here from Michigan. They had never been fishing. They had never seen anyone canning tomatoes, corn, okra, green beans or squash. They never knew anyone that had their own garden. And to top it off, they almost died, when we opened our huge freezer out on the front porch that was packed full of deer meat, pork from our own pigs and a 40 pound bobcat ( and yes, that's a big one) in a garbage bag, waiting to be mounted. I guess you could say we taught them to be a little southern. I think they were only my friends because of momma's canned peach and pear preserves LOL Loved your reaction......this hit home!
Ours too, every Friday night after football we went out to a place we called swamp ghost, back the trucks up around the fire and cranked this on the cassette
Same. I played HS football in a rural county in MD. There were dudes that played his albums after each practice and game. I was not even a country music fan, but I really liked Hank's songs.
The country outlaws...Hank Williams jr, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard & Kris Kirstopherson. They grew up together, wrote true hillbilly songs about their lives or each other's & sometimes sang together. Some were in prison at times, some a lot of drugs, alcohol or both! But they wrote & sang about true life stuff to them. A few have passed, but NO ONE will leave a true county legacy like these bad ass outlaws!!
Back in the long ago day, Country was Real. Not like it is nowadays. Hank and Hank Sr are true Legends along with Willy Nelson and Johnny Cash. Their Highwaymen album is fantastic, and his rendition of Hurt when he was almost about to die, is so powerful. Glad you liked it.
Hank is the man! I cut my teeth on that shit. I was in the Army in the 80’s, I schooled the guys on some Hank Jr, Charlie Daniels, George Jones, Randy Travis.... I’m just an old country boy from East Tennessee.,country as you can get. My nickname in the Army was Tater.... 1SGT, Company Commander and everyone else called me Tater...lol I loved it! Check out some more Hank! His music library is as vast as any out there and there’s not much better. ‘Whiskey Bent And Hell Bound’ ‘All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight’ ‘Born To Boogie’ ‘Family Tradition’ And on and on...
This is Grandma from Texas. I just love your reaction. It is clear that you ARE one of those country boys. I could tell by your reaction that you are familiar with all the tools it takes to survive with your family. Some people who react to this song just don’t have those skills and don’t have a clue. Thank you for this reaction and thank you for being a country boy.
Great reaction! Some history: Hank is part of Country Royalty. His father Hank wrote many many songs that are still covered regularly today. Sadly, he died in 1953 at age 29 of drug and alcohol abuse. Hank Jr. was born in 1949, now age 72, and started his music career in 1964 at age 14. He has an extensive catalog as well as playing with other artists, many as diverse as Ray Charles, Kid Rock, and Lynrd Skynyrd.
Just keep doing your thing my man. Stay real with it.... You did Lynyrd Skynyrd “Simple Man”. You might want to check out their 77 live “Free Bird” performance. One of the best live performances of all time. They were G.O.A.T.S..... Three months after that performance the lead singer, one of the guitar army and a couple others died in a plane crash.
My man....you had me laughin so hard Hahahaha! I like you man! I was fortuna and e enough to see Hank Jr live 5 different times. I cant recite his every song. I'm also an artist on the side and drew a picture of him folks try to buy from me. He is a legend of legends!👍
This made me subcribe. I am a country girl in MS. Got 3 farms plus 55 acres. My granfather worked his ass of for the first 3 and husband the 55. I know how to do ALL Hank sings about and so much more because i was taught. Grow, pick, eat. The men shoot the deer. I did clean fish with my dad. Love Hank Williams Jr.
I'm from Oklahoma, and remember trying moonshine when I was 19 while elk hunting in Colorado. We had met some other Oklahoma guys while hunting there years prior, and he showed up that year with moonshine that he made. I was afraid it would burn like hell, but to my surprise it went down like water. But I felt a warm sensation when it hit my stomach. It had a hint of corn taste to it.. Probably a good thing that I didn't have a batch of it, because I'd probably screw up and drink too much, and croak from alcohol poisoning. Lol
I am from Nebraska and Omaha is The City and Lincoln is the the home of the Huskers and on Game day Memorial Stadium is the 3rd largest city in Nebraska!! The rest of us is country growing the corn and raising the cows!! Definitely The Good Life!!

Well I am country, and there is a difference between fire water and home made wine. We do both. You would love apple pie wine. And we can make flavored fire water it's good also.
I lived on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes for about 15 years and I used to run a trotline on a little Canal off the Kissimmee river called Seven Mile Canal. It was only wide enough for a Jon Boat to go through with a trolling motor. If I didn't babysit that Trotline, the softshell turtles would snap those little yellow belly butter cats off right at the head and I would have a whole trotline full of heads LOL On the upside, in that Old River Run, it only takes about three or four hours to fill a trotline. You don't have to wait all night! There's no such thing as checking in the morning you might have a gator all wrapped up in it. That's a freaking mess with all those hooks!
His sister used to be at my dad's house at least a couple of days a week or we would go visit her and her husband. I have been backstage at several of his shows even onstage at times. Always put on a great show.
Yep, he's the "Are you ready for some football" guy! And also the son of one of the most prolific songwriters and legends of country music. React to "My Name is Bocephus" from the Hank Williams, Jr. Live album to hear him singing blues and picking the guitar! Country folks are the same no matter what color we are. Thats why I subscribed to your channel because I felt like I found a channel where I wasn't a freak, where I was at home. I heard you talk, hehe. Congratulations, this is Hank Jr's signature song He's got a LOT more songs but this is one of his biggest hits, 56 Studio albums, 11 gold and 5 platinum, try "Dixie on my mind" "Country State of Mind" "Attitude Adjustment" . As to those who don't like your reactions, piss on 'em. I lived the good life in the country down in Mississippi for bout 10 years for real on a farm after i got out of the US Navy, and My folks had moved down from the Memphis Area down to Pope, MS round Enid Dam and we revitalized my Grandpaws Farm because He was near 90 and in the Retirement Home because MY GRandmaw had already died by then, and He was senile so bad he couldnt live on his own anymore.
