Ive had my Rigid 6.5hp shop vac for around 6 years and its still running strong. It has been used to clean up 2 houses while they were getting built, and its used multiple times a week to detail cars. Absolutely no issues with it and I would definitely buy one again.
There is one out there by project farm. However, cordless stick vacs like makita, ryobi, milwaukee, remain and are quite inexpensive provided you can borrow the batteries somewhere.
Love seeing you step outside of the “normal” vacs you usually compare. This was some good content. That being said, professionals know that when it’s time to buy a shop vac, Ridgid is the one to go to. It may not be absolute class leading performance, but nothing is more reliable, consistent, and the profession support is second to none. Keep up the great work!
Ive had the same ridgid shop vac since i was a teenager. Still works great. The only things I've had to replace is the hose that wore out from dragging it around and filters. We've all probably forgot one time or another to pull the filter out before vacuuming water and trashed them.

Their horsepower rating is meaningless. So, thank you for posting the water lift (suction) and CFM numbers. I use a shop type vacuum every day for what I do occupationally. I am self employed, so I have owned almost every one of these at one time or another. Personal,y, I don’t find that any of these box store brand vacuums are worth the frustration, unless you use one of these literally “once in awhile”. If durability, reliability, an actual well designed unit with a quality hose and quality attachments you have to spend considerably more money than what these go for. I’m talking about wet/ dry vacuums with HEPA filtration and a motor with a much longer life expectancy. If you’re vacuuming up a lot of water or you aren’t being careful about trying to keep your vac motor protected from the things that will invariably shorten it’s life you’ll be lucky if it lasts as long as it’s warranty. It’s easy fir those cheap hoses to get punctured and before you know it you’ve lost a great amount of suction. Ridged sells a very nice set of attachments with a quality hose and it’s about as expensive as the vacuum itself. That alone tells you how many corners these manufacturers are cutting to remain in a certain price point that these Chinese manufactured vacs are at. If you’re looking for a true quality, well built, well thought out designed, HEPA filtered wet dry vac you’ve got to look at brands like Karcher Windsor or Powr-flite. My Karcher 6 gallon HEPA is smaller than all of these has a metal wand, quality hose and tools and will last me four years or longer with daily heavy usage. The filters are not cheap, but it beats throwing those disposable shop vacs from the big box stores away every six months and starting over. Good video, though as always I enjoy them! I agree with the guy who said you should do a video on the smaller size ones, as well.
Yes, HP ratings are a joke, and actually physically impossible. They all run on 12 amps so they can be used on a 15 amp circuit, so 115 volts at 12 amps is 1380 watts, which is 1.85 hp. You physically cannot get any more power than that.

They're including the maximum power of the motor as well as a contribution from the momentum of the fan, i.e. if you suddenly applied a brake to the fan while it was running, the largest instantaneous power that brake would dissipate. It's a standardized test, it's just one that gives no real information about the real world performance of the vacuum, except for a relative comparison to other vacuums using the same test. Note that ALL consumer wet/dry vacs (and essentially all corded consumer vacuums of any kind) use brushed universal motors, with efficiencies of no more than 60%. So the maximum real continuous power available at 120 V and 12 A is around 1.2 HP.
What's the minimum amount of money for a well built and long lasting dry/wet vac? And are there any heated extractors that can be used as dry wet vac as well? Cause I'm looking for something multipurpose since most of the job they do is the same. Thanks
Well said. As joco pointed out above the power supply limits their power load. But even if they could get that hp, it doesn’t mean better performance. That’s like saying a car that gets less mpg will go faster.
The Craftsman and the Rigid has the same supplier. Both by the Emerson Tool Company, which is why the numbers are so similar. The craftsman being slightly better also is similar to project farms review too.
If you bought both a Craftsman and a Ridgid vacuum at the time of leaving this comment, you'd still have a warranty on the Ridgid right now. Lifetime warranty on the Ridgid is a no brainer.
I recently got a 16 gallon 6.5 HP Craftsman to run my small dust collection system in my shop. I use a cyclone dust separator and it was a massive improvement over my shop vac brand that was rated at 4hp. I only replaced it because it was old and finally died but if I had known how much better it was going to perform I would've just bought it when I made the system. Unbelievable results and turned my $150 dust collection set up (not including shop vac) into something that I would've gladly paid $1,000 for in terms of performance.
When I wanted a vacuum to use a gutter cleaner kit, I opted for a 38 l 6 hp ridgid model. It has the 5 cm diameter hose and it's is not as bulky as a 6,5 hp. These things take a lot of space to store.
@@mikegrok I use a powerful craftsman instead of a carpet extractor. You just spray down the surface with a spray bottle and vacuum. THen you can use a manual or drill brush too. No extractor matches that performance.
I watched this to get help with choosing an upgrade to my 10 yr old craftsman 6.5. I have similar testers and my vac gets almost the same readings you did. I'll just stay with the old girl thats been good to me so far. Great job with this vid.
squeegee pro tip: Spread apart sides to free up clips and pull out the middle rubbery piece. Now you have very wide and fast vacuum attachment that won't get clogged by bigger debris
The ending of this video is a great example of why it's important to watch a video to the end. Based on the colors of the pedestles at the beginning, I immediately assumed that vac master was #1 and ridgid was #3. Definitely not the case!

Thanks for taking the time to compare these! My girlfriend just bought us the craftsman one and I was trying to get her to buy a rigid. She wanted a Stanley one half the size so we compromised where I paid half and she then picked the craftsman in 6.5 hp. I was skeptical thinking it wasn’t anywhere near as good as a rigid which is what all my work places have used throughout the years. So after watching this it looks like we made a great choice and bought one that’s almost as good as a rigid! Can’t wait to go vacuum my garage and vehicles tomorrow!
Hp is meaningless. First your power supply only puts out 1.8 hp so you can’t have a load higher than that. Second more power does not equal better. That’s like saying a car that’s uses more gas will be faster.
Why do you say the Craftsman was "almost as good as the Ridgid" when it had the most power, and won almost every comparison for less money than the Ridgid?
I have a 20yo large craftsman, Except for the $10 power switch replacement it works great, the blower is almost as powerful as a top of the line EGO! That is no joke! Also 2.5". I use it with 20' of extensions to vacuum a second story gutter. Works great.

I'd love an honest conversation at some point about how misleading and goofy these horsepower ratings are. Primarily, how it is actually physically impossible to do 6.5 horsepower (4.78kW) of any form of work (sucking, spinning, blowing, cutting, etc) with the power available (1.8kW, or 2.41 horsepower) from a residential 15A, 120V outlet. If you read the fine print, they define "Peak HP" as "The output of the motor, including the motor's inertial contribution, achieved in laboratory testing." The test they are referring to is: Remove and isolate the vacuum motor from it's housing and impeller, connect it to some sort of brake dynamometer, apply a massive load that QUICKLY brings the shaft to a stop, and evaluate "peak HP" as the instantaneous peak shaft power measured as the motor is stalled and brought to a near-instant stop. I can't explain how absurd this is without an analogy. If Shop Vac were advertising a car (let's say a shop-vac branded Toyota Corolla which outputs about 150 real shaft horsepower), they would not advertise a 150 horsepower car. Rather they would accelerate the car to highway speed, and then smash both the accelerator and brake pedals to the floor, and measure how quickly the car stopped. We know this to be ~150 feet from 60mph with a stuck accelerator. Shop vac engineers would then assess the peak acceleration experienced during braking (let's say -0.9G), and use the highest vehicle speed during which that acceleration occurred (let's say 50mph) along with vehicle weight (~3,000lb) to arrive at a "peak HP" for their Shop Vac Corolla of nearly 250 Horsepower, approximately double what the engine actually produces. In fact this analogy may be too reasonable. Since Shop Vac is defining power almost arbitrarily as involving "inertial contribution in laboratory testing", they could very well send their shop vac corolla into a concrete wall at 60mph and list "peak HP" based on maximum acceleration during the "test", which could be greater than 50G, and would indicate a rate of work of over 14,000 horsepower. You need to include the Bauer shop vacs from Harbor Freight. They are very competitive for the price. I bought one for my mother because she was helping me on a large project and we needed two vacuums. Lets just say, if I didn't already own a Ridgid shop vac, I would be buying a Bauer.
Would be nice to see a testing but with the vaccum that have the detachable blower like Ridigid 6.5 detachable blower/craftsman 6.5 detachable blower and so,also wonder if there's a difference with the detachable blower vs this regular ones
The Bauer does great in Project Farm review. He points out that there is only has a 90 day warranty for the Bauer. I like the power, but want a warranty..craftsman or rigid seem about right for me.
Project Farm did a video on Shop Vacs too, and he had a Stanley in the lineup if I remember correctly. There was also a few other brands too. The Craftsman was in the video as well and if I recall correctly, it came out on top in his test too.
One thing ive noticed about ALL of these, ive had many different over the years- Is that the hose extensions are too short and im only 173cm tall. Yet i have to bend and work in awkward positions most of the time using these.
weird how the vacmaster here is the worst but the 5.5hp version in the old video was the best proof that judging a product by the brand name is a bad idea
Durning all the Vacuums Wars, the wet/dry vacuums are the only ones who stayed truly neutral. Wished they would have helped our men on the battlefield, but at least they stayed out. So many good men lost durning those wars.
For those who want to know what the true possibly hp is, they are likely 1/2 to 3/4. With most of these being 8-10 amps, you would think that you could just multiply 10 times 120v to get the watts, then divide by the hp constant of 746 watts. But, because this motor has inductive reactance in this AC power, the 1200 number you will get is the VA, and not the watts. So, accounting for that with power factor, the true hp, the energy used to make the shaft spin would be less when worked out. Then, there is efficiency, which I will use Jeremy's Fielding figure of 51% efficiency. So in total: 120v X 10a = 1200VA 1200VA X .92(pf) X .51 = 563.04 Watts of true power being used Divide by the HP constant: 563.04/746 = .75hp But keep in mind, that if you have voltage drop, that will make this HP number smaller*
I don't buy anything Craftsman since the Sears day. I needed a vac in a pinch and grabbed you got it the Craftsman. Not bad for the price. Enjoyed the video.
Grew up using the red craftsman shop vac since the floors were tile. Worked excellently. It’s been over 15 years and the vacuum is still running strong, my mom uses it in her garage now.
I have a Ridgid that looks exactly like the Workshop. Orange top, white bucket and a paper label for "Ridgid" instead of being printed onto the bucket. Super powerful but strange that the design changed around like that.
I assume suction and air flow are both important in gauging how much vac picks up. But are they equally important? I assume it would be safe to say that the craftsman “picks up the most.”

Bosch, Makita, Karcher, Nilfisk, Metabo are another league. They have filter cleaning and they 400% more useful. You will never look back at shop vac again.

We had 3 of these and a dirt devil and they all broke. In our houses vacuum's never lasted long so we just bought a hoover commercial vac and it's been holding up to the abuse and terrible treatment so far lmao

That Ryobi is dismal...finicky, underpowered and the beater bar stops constantly for nothing and require several steps to reset...

Rather they would accelerate the car to highway speed, and then smash both the accelerator and brake pedals to the floor, and measure how quickly the car stopped. We know this to be ~150 feet from 60mph with a stuck accelerator. Shop vac engineers would then assess the peak acceleration experienced during braking (let's say -0.9G), and use the highest vehicle speed during which that acceleration occurred (let's say 50mph) along with vehicle weight (~3,000lb) to arrive at a "peak HP" for their Shop Vac Corolla of nearly 250 Horsepower, approximately double what the engine actually produces.
In fact this analogy may be too reasonable. Since Shop Vac is defining power almost arbitrarily as involving "inertial contribution in laboratory testing", they could very well send their shop vac corolla into a concrete wall at 60mph and list "peak HP" based on maximum acceleration during the "test", which could be greater than 50G, and would indicate a rate of work of over 14,000 horsepower.

You need to include the Bauer shop vacs from Harbor Freight. They are very competitive for the price. I bought one for my mother because she was helping me on a large project and we needed two vacuums. Lets just say, if I didn't already own a Ridgid shop vac, I would be buying a Bauer.

The Bauer does great in Project Farm review. He points out that there is only has a 90 day warranty for the Bauer. I like the power, but want a warranty..craftsman or rigid seem about right for me.

Project Farm did a video on Shop Vacs too, and he had a Stanley in the lineup if I remember correctly. There was also a few other brands too. The Craftsman was in the video as well and if I recall correctly, it came out on top in his test too.
One thing ive noticed about ALL of these, ive had many different over the years- Is that the hose extensions are too short and im only 173cm tall. Yet i have to bend and work in awkward positions most of the time using these.

We used to have a Craftsman 16 gallon vac with blower years ago but the motor went bad so we replaced it with a Ridgid 4 gallon.

Durning all the Vacuums Wars, the wet/dry vacuums are the only ones who stayed truly neutral. Wished they would have helped our men on the battlefield, but at least they stayed out. So many good men lost durning those wars.

For those who want to know what the true possibly hp is, they are likely 1/2 to 3/4. With most of these being 8-10 amps, you would think that you could just multiply 10 times 120v to get the watts, then divide by the hp constant of 746 watts. But, because this motor has inductive reactance in this AC power, the 1200 number you will get is the VA, and not the watts. So, accounting for that with power factor, the true hp, the energy used to make the shaft spin would be less when worked out. Then, there is efficiency, which I will use Jeremy's Fielding figure of 51% efficiency. So in total:
120v X 10a = 1200VA
1200VA X .92(pf) X .51 = 563.04 Watts of true power being used
Divide by the HP constant: 563.04/746 = .75hp
But keep in mind, that if you have voltage drop, that will make this HP number smaller*

if you do end up getting one of these and use it regularly, get one of the cyclone separators, and wash your filter with water regularly.

I never heard of the car attachment tool…none of the shop vac I have bought ever had that attachment.
Grew up using the red craftsman shop vac since the floors were tile. Worked excellently. It’s been over 15 years and the vacuum is still running strong, my mom uses it in her garage now.

I have a Ridgid that looks exactly like the Workshop. Orange top, white bucket and a paper label for "Ridgid" instead of being printed onto the bucket. Super powerful but strange that the design changed around like that.
ridgid, workshop, and craftsman are all made from emerson electric. If you compare the sizes the older ones look similar but they all sound the same.

Bosch, Makita, Karcher, Nilfisk, Metabo are another league. They have filter cleaning and they 400% more useful. You will never look back at shop vac again.

5kw? On what voltage? From the UK where 3kw is the standard maximum you can plug in 6.5hp sounds fishy.

I think craftsman’s are the best all around, another good one is the new dewalt shop vac’s my brother bought one for carpentry work, it sucks harder than any shop vac I’ve ever used by far, but I know I can depend on a craftsman to last

We had 3 of these and a dirt devil and they all broke. In our houses vacuum's never lasted long so we just bought a hoover commercial vac and it's been holding up to the abuse and terrible treatment so far lmao
