I was doing the online dietetics program at Alabama, and I experienced a lot of racism as a hispanic woman. The professors bullied me out of the program. I ended up completing a Masters, getting my NASM Nutrition Coach certification, and currently working on my Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) credential. Going this route was the best decision I ever made. I was able to work full time while completing my clinical hours under supervision. I test in June, and I will continue with my DCN ❤ this fall.

Girllllll same🙄🫠 i’m a B-C student in sciences and i’ve always hated physics and maths lol & chemistry is not that bad butttt when all the sciences come together and practical work it gets frustrating & i’ve no idea whether or not i should pursue this dream career of mine of becoming a nutritionist
I am a first-year nutrition major in my first semester. My time is consumed with biology and chemistry AND with the chem labs. Plus, I’ve never taken chemistry in high school 😭.
I applaud the bravery for going into dietetics without being good in science! Brother did a similar thing, he wasn’t the best in math, but with the help of a tutor (or several), constant office hours, help from friends, and lots of books from the library, he managed to graduate in Statistics/Data Analysis. So, my advice to you is you don’t need to be good _right now_ but with enough effort and practice you’ll eventually reach the level of excellence ✨ (or hopefully close to it). Another piece of advice that you may already be doing is _keep all your notes and have them organized_ . One of the best things about STEM is how interconnected everything is. Something from nutrition will tie in with something from anatomy/physiology will tie in with something from chemistry will tie in with something from microbiology, which _all_ strengthens your understanding of the topic. (I recommend writing notes on a tablet/iPad so it’s easier, but not everyone can afford to do that). You’ll be fine! Remember to _breathe_ . Meditate, drink your water, chat with friends and family, everything will work out in the end 👍🏻
They aren’t open enough about the cons from the beginning. At one point one of my professors said, “I hope none of you are in this for the money”.. and at the time I wasn’t. But life happens and you need money to survive. Also, you aren’t really “not having a paycheck for a year”, it’s more like you have to PAY to work. It’s an internship that you need to PAY for. Plus, the additional requirement of the masters makes more like 2 years at this point.
My cousin is a Mexican American practitioner in the field and she said she thinks it’s mainly white women because usually they are the ones that can afford 1 year without pay. Makes sense.
Thank you for making this video. My girlfriend is looking for any opportunities to work as a nutritionist in U.S., because I'm going to study for PhD abroad and she's going with me. She already has a nutritionist certificate in Taiwan, but we realized it is not recognized by U.S. and will have to pass the master program and complete the training before getting a nutritionist job. From your video it seems impossible. It is just too expensive! Hmm...anyway, thanks for sharing these information with us. This is very helpful and now we can move forward...maybe try to learn other skills :( Thank you.
I feel that as an RD the areas are all similar. No matter what you do this job is tedious. Worst is that you truly want to help the patient or client and they don’t do the work. I have been lucky to have jobs that pays well but the dietitian pay sucks.
I am currently a nutrition and dietetics student in NC. Our tuition isnt that high and a lot of these cons you listed are for students who intend to do the masters degree and become a registered dietitian. There are a lot of nutrition options that don’t require you to become a registered dietitian and they don’t require so much schooling. I am pursuing the DTR requirement. What you said is true but may not apply to everyone.

Hi! I am finishing up my last semester in a Coordinated Program. This is where they combine the dietetic internship and master's classes. I have found that this option can be the most efficient option. It is definitely a busy 1.5-2-year program, but there are ways to minimize costs. A lot of Master's programs offer graduate assistantships to students (teaching assistants, research assistants, graders for undergraduate courses, etc) This is a way to get your tuition covered and even receive a stipend in most cases. If you are able to afford housing, it may be a great way to knock out the internship and Master's at once. Just something to keep in mind :)
I'm on my junior year of nutrition and I'm just coming here to say, is not worth it. There are almost no jobs in the fields, you're probably going to have to work on your own because of the lack of positions there are. It's sad but it's true. And if you are from a third world country looking to migrate with this degree, it's literally worthless.
@@alisonodette Hey! Where are you from? I'm also from a so called "third world country" lol. Could you please a little bit more about why you said that about this major, please? I was thinking about pursuing it :(.
@@seatea3463 hii! I'm from México, and sure I'll elaborate. I will say it's a nice career and you can implement some of the things that you learn in your own life. But I have found that there are a lot of cons too. The job field is basically non existent, even the teachers tell us that. The only places you could work in are Hospitals, not a lot of businesses are looking to hire a nutritionist, it's just not a priority. If you decide to work in hospitals, is extremely BAD PAYED, we are talking about around $500 dollars a month or less for really long hours of work and huge responsabilities. I'll say the only way to gain money as a nutritionist is if you put your own private practice, but you have to be good so people will want to come back, be prepared to have to deal with angry people who don't follow their plans and blame you for not loosing weight overnight. Plus obviously the money you have to invest for your private practice in the first place, which might be hard if you're not well off already because you need some savings (and you can't really have savings if you're working in a hospital with low pay, you might as well be a teacher instead because they gain the same amount of money, at least in Mexico which is so unfair). But if you do manage to put a private practice, you can do really well! especially if you have some sort of specialization, but I'll say that to put a private practice you need to be sure that you're staying in that place for some years at least, which is not my case so that's why I think my degree is pretty worthless. If your dream is to move countries (like mine), I would say you should skip this degree because in first world countries (like the USA and Canada) any degree from the medical area from a 3rd world country is not valid. You have to become a dietitian in order to do that and is a whole other thing, I would say do your research on it but it is expensive and hard to get that title. So you won't be able to find any job in your field over there. I'm not sure how Europe works but I have a friend who studied medicine and he wanted to move to Poland and they told him his Mexican degree is worthless there so yeah, be careful. If I had the chance I would've studied something else. But again, don't be discouraged, if you already have a plan, you want to stay in your country and put a private practice, go for it! it's an interesting career, and if you follow that path, you will make good money
Finally speaks the truth. I have my degree in Human Nutrition and Foods and lets just say it hasn't landed me anywhere.. it's been super stressful for me because everyone thinks im an RD but im not. Here in texas you have to do 1200 hours of a dietetic internship. It was not combined with the degree. I applied and I did not get in. I paid to apply and i didnt get in. Its soooo stressful if youre not going to put the work and money into it. Id say stray away unless you have alot of experience in the nutrition area and have money. I have 10k in student loans for nothing lol working as a virtual assistant and I don't know if it will ever be sustainable.

Why is the food in rehabs so bad? Do they use an RD? I feel so bad for our patients. Our snacks and foods are fried, processed, canned and we lack variety and color. :( If one became a RD, could you change that systemically? I dont get how any RD approves the food we give out.
They can contract a chef trained RD and approve the appropriate budget to have better food. Most likely they’re not budgeting for good quality Whole Foods and ppl who know how to cook it and the ability and equipment to store and cook it properly.
Did you have to take calculus and organismic chemistry, microbiology ? Like did you have to take the same challenging classes that are required for medical school
I am in a graduate program combined with the dietetic internship at the moment. To get my undergraduate degree in nutrition, my university required microbiology, bio-organic chemistry, anatomy and physiology I & II, psychology. The only math classes that were required were statistical reasoning courses (which had basic math prerequisites).

@@HistoriasconKaren Right! I wish someone would've told me before pursuing. Now I'm almost in my senior year anyways. I'll probably end up applying for a masters degree in something else
Wow this was my dream career
Thanks so very much for this cideo
I came to the internet because i just spent 10 years to become a dietitian and made the 100k mistake. Wish i had never done it. Nurses with AS make double and jobs are endless for them.
Did you end up going into nursing?
@irinafedorishina1256 I'm working in public health right now because I was out of savings. I'm going to take night classes next semester for the 2 classes I need then apply for Spring 25!
Thank you so much this is so beneficial but does nutrition consists alot of math and chem?
Fair amount of math. Math for counting calories and stuff and in food service-related math. And it's a whole huge ball of bio chemistry
can you be a consultant? i want to do it on the side gig , people dont think of it as a serious healthcare worker.
Sooo is it worth it???........ specially when it comes to salary?
No
Why is the food in rehabs so bad? Do they use an RD? I feel so bad for our patients. Our snacks and foods are fried, processed, canned and we lack variety and color. :(
If one became a RD, could you change that systemically? I dont get how any RD approves the food we give out.
They can contract a chef trained RD and approve the appropriate budget to have better food.
Most likely they’re not budgeting for good quality Whole Foods and ppl who know how to cook it and the ability and equipment to store and cook it properly.
Thank you so much for this video
Did you have to take calculus and organismic chemistry, microbiology ? Like did you have to take the same challenging classes that are required for medical school
I am in a graduate program combined with the dietetic internship at the moment. To get my undergraduate degree in nutrition, my university required microbiology, bio-organic chemistry, anatomy and physiology I & II, psychology. The only math classes that were required were statistical reasoning courses (which had basic math prerequisites).
Completely agree!
I chose CNS instead of dietetics because personalized nutrition model is more effective.
Mam can you please help me am from india and I completed my degree in bsc Food Technology and I want to become a nutritionist , can I take msc clinical nutrition and become a nutriton in hospitals or clinic
I can relate to that trauma drop 😢
I love you! thank you so much
Im very passionate about working with animals, but also nutrition. I want to do holistic nutrition 1 on 1 work woth clients. but Im not sure what to do because I want to work with animals too. I aldo want to help people with nutrition. Anyone have any ideas? Any thing will help. I also want to travel lol
I think that you should start with what you thing is harder or take the longest first. I used to wanna work with animals. When I went to a dog show I met a lady who was telling me that that’s kind of a field that you can always learn and not rush. But I would definitely start with nutrition. Once you have enough money start traveling 😌 hope this helped 🙏🏽
omg are we the same person 😭 I have this same feeling
Wow! In Italy I had scholarship so I actually got paid to do my BSc and MSc :) but the exam to become RN is expensive: 200 euro!
I tap into that Blessing in Jesus Name. Amen!
The RD exam is $200 in the US, too
That’s amazing
My major is food science & nutrition I do not want to be an RD
people who are living europe countries can get jobs easily in fields of Nutrition but here in pakistan bro you have to set your own clinic because there isn't any job for you i'm running my own page but sometime i think o have wasted 7 years of my life for this field

That's cold they taking so much.. God bless 🙏
As a MD student and group personal trainer I realize you have to tell patients what SALT really actually IS and WHY eating it is FATAL!!! ANYTHING in crystal form is bad for you! Don't have to go into too much chem just be brief and precise. After that move on to the next patient....
ADORED your video! You are so sincere 😊❣
wait so ur a dietitian?
Hi! I’m a nutritionist- I have the degree but haven’t gone through the DI!
I'm from FL. Purdue has a bs in nutrition which'll total like 65000 but the issue is it isn't usable in FL to be a RD- but I want to look into it for my bachelor before grad school ... Don't know whether to take the risk or not lol the stress!
Are you Persian?
I'm interested in the secondary fields since California's new requirement is an MS
I love the way you speak
You look like Kylie Jenner
You kind of look like Kylie Jenner
Yall should also study how to treat people with addictions, cause under capitalism junk food is made addictive and hard to let go of. If you don't tell a smoker to quit and expect them too, you should also not do that with food imo.
KYLIE JENNER? WHAT

😂😂 no, just my ethnic genes buddy
