  • In this SCIO Peer Connection, we explore accessible DIY (Do It Yourself) projects, focusing on creating solutions that are inclusive for people with disabilities. Julie, Peer Program Coordinator at Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, leads the session -- she is joined by Alec, Nancy and Oda. Together, they share ideas, their experiences, and give examples of accessible projects that help improve their lives.
Nancy demos making her own wheelchair cushion cover using a t-shirt and how to clean the front casters.
Oda demos the DIY backpack straps that enabled him to have access to whatever backpack he wanted and that work on a wheelchair without push handles. He also demos how he learned to change his wheelchair wheels on his own by transferring to the couch and then balancing the wheelchair on the couch to change the wheels.
Alec demos some kitchen accessibility hacks, as well as two tricks for accessing his vehicle, an umbrella hack, and a ramp solution for tight spaces.
What's your best DIY hack? Let us know in the comments below!
