- In this tutorial learn how to start a fire using one match, a knife and a hatchet without the use of paper, gas or lighter fluid. Successfully starting a one match fire is the very first step in firecraft.
Check out my website at www.trailagain.com for other tips and tricks!
perfect exactly what I needed . I'm gonna build the shit outta some fires and when I'm warm at night under the stars I'll think of you buddy. I'll think of you.
Nice video i like how there isn't a lot of BS to go with them its just you working with nature. Keep up the good work
I really appreciate the feedback! I am not much of a BS kinda guy. HA. +Marcus Black
I didn't expect such an inviting voice from such a burly guy lol

my brother is 14 and he has a depper voice than him
I’m just gonna curl up in his lap and let him tell me a story next to that fire haha
You're such a gentle giant🤗
I just tried building a fire with a lighter some shredded paper and it was out inside of 20 minutes, so I gave up. I'll definitely try this method. Thanks for the cool and informative video, much appreciated.
I went camping for my very first time and literally had the best experience starting my first fire with one match!! Thank you for this tutorial!
Great video. I actually watched this probably 3 times over the last month trying to perfect everything. Just got a new hatchet in the mail so was going to clean the house today.... not anymore! Keep up the great videos!
Probably one of the best camp fire videos I've seen. Thanks.
I have tried many fire starting methods! This way is hands down the best! Just finished up with it & it burned like a champ for hours! Thanks! Great Video!
city boy that moved to GA, bought a home with a fire pit, had only ever used gasoline or some fluid…..tonight successfully started and built a fire with a few matches and a lot of deep breaths. thanks mate!
Everybody should know this stuff. Not everybody can teach it. This guy can light a fire like a boss. You can too because here we have a great teacher. Lovely video.
The real problem is that no one wants to do the work. This stuff isn’t easy and the hard work is part of the fun and adventure. Thanks for sharing.
which is so crazy to me , whats not fun about having a beer cutting the wood and make the fire to some music ??
And besides of accidentally chopping your fingers while cutting the wood... 🙁
wym no one wants to? any friend i take in the woods is happy as fuck cutting up wood
Thank you for this. I’m literally trying to learn how to build a better fire because each time my girlfriend and I go camping, we gather so much wood and our fire just continually goes out. We always struggle with keeping it roaring even with a lot of wood. This should definitely help!
You need a real man to light your fire.
Are You a Lesbian ?
@@MAGA54 bruh
make sure the wood is not fresh but instead is old and dry
I love that this is almost the only tutorial that demonstrates knife/hatchet safety as well as the fire safety. Good on you, man.
Thanks. Was nice to see someone not abusing their knife. Using a hatchet to cut the bigger pieces and a knife for finishing it up. I guess I’ve never understood the appeal of battoning with a knife. Great video, very well executed and full of good info. Thanks
Excellent video. Straight-forward, to the point, and great fire starting technique. You reminded me I need to be more patient with the initial prep and staging of the wood.
Great vid! I've made hundreds of fires with flint and steel, ferrorods, lighters, matches, etc. but I still really enjoy watching people make fires cause it's relaxin to watch and you can always pick up new things. Looks like you got the toughest twisted knotty log possible for the chopping demonstration 😆
I love this guys voice.
Pat 137 It’s so calming, he should do a voice over for a book. I’d listen to it
@@andrewjackson3278 Damn, brought me back to a video from 3 years ago. Woah
Cool video, I've made probably 500 campfires in my life but for good for the kids. Nice touch for showing the axe doesn't just split wood like magic
I'm taking my teenager camping soon. I'm one that has to use fuel to start a fire. Thanks for teaching me to light a one match fire. I am excited to teach my child!
Used this method last night. Had a huge fire. Thanks.
This video was really helpful. No nonsense. We're camping in the bush in Kenya and used a panga, wood we carried and a match. Easy. Then we played a drinking game and took a swig every time you said 'go ahead'. I'm smashed! Thanks!
Wow!!!! That was the best video on how to start a fire, that I have seen so far. Thank you so much. I just learn a lot with this one video.
That was really helpful. The best fire building video I've seen on UA-cam. Straight forward, easy to follow and friendly! Thank you!
not often you find a video on youtube with out a thumbs down. thanks for the great vid man.
I did it!!! Your tip about taking my time was key for me thanks man
I liked this. Forgot my multi-tool Leatherman is also handy in making kindling. I was doing the dry grass method today at the lake. Gathered up a bunch of wood from falling trees and broke them all in to the size I need from my hand-dug fire pit. Used a good strong stick to break the ground apart. Then kept digging. Will use a shovel tomorrow when I go. I will use you method of shaving and all with the knife on my Leatherman. Then I will just use what I find around me on the lake shore of the empty lake to make the rest of the fire.
I will not tell what I am using, that's a mystery!
Mom here wanted to go camping with the kids! Learning my basics!
Thank you very much for introducing me to start a fire with one match
Dude thanks for this. I did some camping earlier this year and made a camp fire for the kids for the marshmallows. We were burning leaves and twigs and it made a smokey mess. I will practice this on a fire pit at home and impress my friends on our next camping trip.
Im a scout and you teached me this, much thanks from germany🤩
Pro tip: Lay the slit log down with the grains pointing toward you, and swing downward in the log. It's safer and easier than trying to pick the log up with the axe stuck in it
I learned something new! Thank you and awesome video!!
thanks for the video. my roommates are attempting to make a fire now and from this video I can see what they've been doing wrong. There's no air circulation in the tinder as they're just using piles of it on the bottom.
If you make a v-shape with the two bottom sticks and point that v in the direction of the wind, which is going right to left in this video, then the wind with blow the fire for you. You can also put a heavier piece on top of the v and create a chimney effect that catches in the wind as the fire is blown up the big piece. Then you can also lean the smaller pieces against the larger log at the back as it catches. This speeds up the burn and keeps the smoke out of your eye and preparation area, as it is blown out the back of the fire, instead of around you. You can build the back wall of the fire as high as you like. It will attract the smoke and fire upwards and help the wind blow it up and away.
This really is a great video me and my friend got a load of small sticks and paper then lit a small bit of paper and put it on there it went for obout 45 mins since we put more wood on but we dident surround it with rocks since we couldn't find any but we are going to try and find some thanks for the video!
I enjoyed that video, nice and simple to follow. Thank you
Great video! Nice to see something that is both simple and informative.
Back in my middle school ages (14 yo) I was a bit crazy. During my camping trip, my teacher told us to race who can make the fastest campfire. I put a lightened match on a paper soaked with correction tape, it burned really quickly and I accidentally burnt my hand, but the burning paper fell on the woods that i prepared earlier. I won the race, though.
Also my other friend who was in the 3rd place started fire by using Vaseline soaked branches, it burned up really quickly.
Wait a minute. You are still in middle school even at 14?! In my country, 13 is the year you go to high school

You really should have more subscribers! Really informative video, thanks.
This was so very well done, thank you for your teaching skills. Great job!
This will give me a head start on making a one match fire when I first go camping. No I have never been before.
good to see you using an axe rather than batoning for the most part, you don't see this alot anymore with everyone seeming to be addicted to batoning with a knife.
One 'cheat' would be to use stormproof matches (especially the UCO Titans), they burn for a lot longer than a regular match.
Such a wholesome video!
That natural kermit the frog accent 🤗
Awesome vid. Clearly detailed and explained. Brilliant job.
Thanks man. I feel like my masculinity went up a notch just by watching a UA-cam video

You seem like such a sweet man. Thank you for this video I will use the knowledge today!
Awesome video, very informative and easy to follow. Thanks!!
Greetings from Denmark good work
Amazing video man this helped a lot
This is beautiful
Great Video, practical and to the point!!
I can't believe I'm commenting on an old video but his beard is amazing
Lol why does it matter how old a video is? I’ve never heard of people avoiding commenting on a video because it’s not current...I do agree about the beard though!
As soon as I saw the small axe Im already feeling defeat y’all. Lol
it's a really good skill to learn to just start a fire with wood and without using accelerants that you most likely won't have if you need a fire
Great video and awesome explanations.
Excellent vid. Thanks for making this.
Great tutorial! Thank you. 👍
Good stuff man. Thanks for the video!
Wonderful instructions, thank you.
Awesome video and tutorial!!
This video helps a lot. Now i know how. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks! Now I will attempt to do this in my back yard with my kids 👌😬 wish me luck! Lol
works even better if you put gasoline covered newspapers on the shavings.

Very educational video
Thank u so much u have helped through a lot. Keep up the good work dude!
Very descriptive yet not annoyingly long.
Good detailed explanation. Maybe you could make a video that shows collecting tinder and kindling from all of the stuff on the ground behind you :-)
I have a new fire pit, with the grate up high, I used every trick in the book, fat wood, plenty of kindling , dry kiln dried wood, and the sucker went out, I even breathed on it, I'll try again, geez, thanks for the video.
Excellent video!
I came for a camp fire video. I stayed for the beard. Unreal, man!
Thank you for your amazing video! It was very helpful ;)
you can add safety by having the axe on the wood and hitting it with a log to ebed it then lift both up and slam, of flip it over and hit them that way. No danger. also a 2 cent tea light candle under the kindling works like magic
I hear a beautiful creek near by, I wanna see it!!
I found this very helpful! I hope you will go back to making vids soon since yours are very good!
Also I subbed because of this vid.
I'm gonna base your survival skills on this one video, that's enough for me to sub
Very helpful and entertaining video
Five pound hand sledge hammer would help out your process immensely plus much safer. Use to hit back side of ax, works great.
Grizzly adams and Chuck Norris in one. Liked!

wtf your beard is fucking amazing
Can I ask what is the knife being used in the video? It seems really nice.

Short handled Survivalist by ML Knives. I copied his response just so others may know.
Watched half, went to buy an axe, came back to finish 😂
Best video I’ve seen!
I noticed a nice flooring. That must be Paramount.
I respect the facts that you didn't put your hand through that wood when you were banging your knife
Thanks, this video helped alot!
That beard would make great kindling in a survival situation .
Your mustache and beard is absolutely immaculate
