I bought the 2M Black just to see if I could lower the overall noise in my phono chain. I had been using a Shelter 501 II, which while not a very expensive MC cartridge, I enjoyed. But through my preamp (McIntosh C 2300) at the recommended tracking force and loading there was some background noise like a slight hissing sound when I turned up the gain. With the 2M Black I don’t have that noise at the same output volume because the gain required for that is less. Through the past fifty years or so one of the key things I have been gradually addressing is system noise. I use a Shunyata power conditioner, separate 30 amp circuits off the same leg in the breaker box, a VPI record cleaning machine, shielded cabling from Signal Cable, and star grounding of all equipment through the Shunyata. I’m not completely rid of the noise when listening at elevated levels, but at listening levels around 70 dB I cannot hear any noise when the recoding stops. The 2M Black does what I was hoping for when I bought it.
Thinking about changing the cartridge on my evo carbon, but started by ordering a new ball bearing from Acusande audio. After all upgrades from Pro-ject including m2 blue. Thinking about a Denon dl-103r. But the concept that Ortofon offers is very easy to change. Thanks for the nice presentation!
The 2M cartridges peak around 8-10 kHz in many environments. This is where their overly bright sound signature comes from, I assume. The old OM generator (without "Super") doesn't, and hence sounds smoother. I assume it's because it has lower inductance as well as massive pole pins (which have higher eddy current losses), but should also sound a bit less detailed (which many analogues listeners might find pleasant). My biggest gripe about the LVB stylus is the mounting of the diamond on the cantilever, which looks scarily fragile to me... 💢😱
Yep, I dunno why, but I prefer the sound of the OM generator...As you said, it sounds smoother and 'rounder' as well as less detailed, which is not necessarily a bad thing. And yes, the stylus looks fragile 🤣
@@HiFisquarepants The huge blob of glue on the Nagaoka MP-500 diamond may look less esthetic, but I have more confidence in it 😅 But I broke off my MP-30's boron cantilever by accidently dropping the tonearm, so a boron cantilever gives me cold sweat anyway now 😁
iMHO AT-VM749ML is one of the most valuable cartridges at its level of price. In fact I have it in my two TTs. My next step will probably be an AT33PTGII
What would you recommend as an upgrade cartridge for the AT-LP5 turntable, I'm due to change it and have been looking at the Ortofon range but would definitely like some other options that I can ask my local store demo for me before deciding
It depends on your personal preferences. I'd start by auditioning the AT-VM95 range. The EN and the SH are excellent. It's a good way to have a good sound without breaking the bank. ua-cam.com/video/Is3kIqaGpsQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/JflXb68eBXM/v-deo.html
Nice informative video I always like the bronce over the black at least the other black not this one. Have you try using the Denon dl 103r on this table? Great record by the way!
@@HiFisquarepants 👍 i have 2 of those they are one of my favorite. I use mine on a technics but I been wondering how they do on a project or a p6 and is better to ask some who knows better. I looked at forums and it seems like some of them don’t issues. I know this cart need medium to heavy tonearm mass
Interesting...you made me wanna try the LVB on my Thorens. You evil man! 😈Lots of 'work' to do now! 😫BTW, should I change my nickname to HiFisDoctor or something like that? 😅 You wouldn't believe the number of fingerprints cleanings I save by using those gloves...😋
Excelente, Francisco.
I like your input on these videos. It adds more to the videos. Keep it up!
Thank you very much Nicholas 😃👍I'm glad you like it, my sincere thanks! 😃
I love your commentary! In my opinion you do a very good job of describing sounds, and it helped me in my decision making. Thanks.
Thank you, that's very kind of you! 🙏 I'm glad this helped! 😊

Amazing the sound quality. Imagine if most of us the audience listening to it live. That a an enjoyable moment for many of us.
Excelente review!!
Gracias Luis

I personally love the tonality of this cartridge with the Technics 1500c and the KEF LS50M.
Classical, Acoustic and Jazz genres sound amazing!

hi - What turntable/arm combo do you have? thx
So what's your favourite Ortofon 2M series cartridge?
Honestly, although the upper range body is more detailed, most of the times I prefer the 2m red/blue generator because of its 'rounder' sound.
Nice informative video I always like the bronce over the black at least the other black not this one.

Great record by the way!
Thanks! No, I haven't. The 103 likes heavy tonearms, and the effective mass of this Pro-Ject tonearm is only 6g 😅 It wouldn't be a good match 😋
@@HiFisquarepants that what i thought. But I know they sell heavier counter weights.
@@theredon2 I'll show the Denon 103r on a heavier tonarm and with a heavy headshell shortly

Ay! La rivalidad entre hermanos😅😱
Using a digital album as a demonstration is bad choice to point out what you say, as digital is already harsh in many cases.
I was testing the IGD with this record. My opinion is based on long hours of listening to a wide variety of records.
Most cartridges are way over priced
