Excellent Step-By-Step. I am replacing a clients' Lock Cylinder Housing on a 2003 Silverado today, which requires removal of air bag and steering wheel in order to access some fasteners just beneath. I wanted to refresh self on process. Most of my time is programming remotes and keys, dealing with electronics, and less anymore on mechanical. But a body shop whose mechanics are out at this time wanted me to do the ignition lock housing and the door lock, cut fresh keys by code and match everything up, as both have damage. One important note: Many of these vehicles, especially diesels have TWO batteries. This can come as a shock or worse, so I would add some text to this effect at the point where you disconnect the battery. Thanks, EXCELLENT video.
Really would have liked to seen more close up of the wiring harness I am planning on changing my wiring harness to try to retrofit steering wheel controls into a truck that did not have them.
Great video Bri...but i do wish you had shown how to remove the module...what is the lift and slide lever you speak of!? I am doping this and cannot get that main module out. Any tips?
Thanks for making the video. I ended up using the Dorman one and after the job I agree......just go with the oem one. Anyway, the video helped a lot, thanks
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Quick question for you... How do you remove that plastic white connector that sits on top of the ignition cylinder? It has a plastic pin that drops right into the cylinder. Your video skips right past it and I can't figure out how get it off without breaking it.
@@ed66muscle72 I think you have to twist to the right and then it comes out. It was much easier then I expected but I don't exactly remember what I did. Don't pull too hard though because it'll break.
tnx for the video very instructional,,,my question is why does chevy want to make more money by adding that harness,,when they can sell just the module,,,??????????
Question after re-installing the Clock Spring I pulled the orange plastic thing off as you demo. it broke off and a tiny piece is left in the part on the vehicle, everything works as it should, no more service airbag light, etc, thought it was wired how it came off, however, the part I took off had the same piece left in, so I went along with it. Just curious.
My 06 yukon had a kenwood double din with a pac steering wheel kit when I got it, if I broke the clockspring do I need to just fix the clockspring?or do I need to redo the pac kit too??
Here's one I cannot find on the net any place. How to replace the tilt lever on a 2004 Chevy Express steering column ...I bought a 2004 express van. And the knucklehead owner before me looks like he used JB weld to put the pull lever handle on to the tilt lever. I bought all the parts to replace both plastic but this one got me stumped. Looks to me you have to disassemble the whole thing. to do it right.
*Much easier than i thought, thanks! Question though Is it 100% important to unhook the battery before beginning? i've seen it done with it still connected and i've seen it done without*
@@jSCOTTmc80 that's what i did with the one i just did. i HATE changing out GM clocksprings with Dorman replacement parts though, it's always such a destructive and permanent process. that's what it took to get mine working though
It should not be required, there has to be speed sensed at the wheels for the airbag to deploy, your bigger concern is static electricity. That being said what can it hurt?
Have you done a ABS/brake module swap on a 2004-2007 Silverado! Requires 4 / T20 screws but space is limited. Cant find a video of anyone showing you how to losen those. They always skip that step!!
I’ve got an ‘04 Astro and I’m getting a short when the steering wheel is in a certain location. It appears that the airbags have gone off in the past. Great van so far aside from this.
The clock spring is connected to the connection piece with a bunch of wires to it. When I first tired taking mine apart I had to stop b.c I had the wrong replacement so putting it back together the truck didn't wanna start. I went and clipped that connection in better and it started right up.
Does anyone know if this steering wheel and air bag will work on a 98-04 S10? The 2001 Tahoe uses the the same wheel as an s10. The 2003 Tahoe has this style wheel, but the trim of the vehicle is the same. The ony thing I saw different for sure was the plug for the airbag in the wheel, but if you take the airbag with it, looks like it would work. The steering column is the same for both wheels. Will it work or does the wiring need to be changed. Their was a mint 03 wheel in the salvage yard. I took a leather blazer wheel in descent shape for my old crumby foam wheel in my s10 because its exactly the same, but I wanted that 03 Tahoe wheel.
how do you remove the part that's right behind the clock spring do you just pull it out or is there a release spring I'm trying to replace the ignition lock housing
Why or what is the purpose to replace or change clock spring ??? My issue is rapid blink . It could be my blinker switch or this ... Yes lights have been replaced, side effects when I turn left it blinks normal when straight rapid. Arrow lights stay on until turned left.. honk horn some times it works normal blink now nothing idk I'm about done with this truck 😢
Not bad, but nothing happens until 4:00 or so. Power tools are great, but hand tools can greatly reduce the potential of damaging nuts and stripping screws.
Yes you can.. just go to an auto recycler and buy the wheel, clock spring, and complete wiring harness out of a truck that has it and swap it out with your current wheel, clock spring, and harness and you are good to go.. the radio controls will work without doing anything else. But if you want the driver info system to display, you will have to have your instrument cluster reflashed with a vin number from a truck that came with wheel controls from the factory.. there are videos on UA-cam that tell you how to do that
This video leaves a lot to be desired. Most notable is the failure to show which wires need to be disconnected and how to do it. Simply telling viewers that you need a special tool (not shown) and naming the connectors is useless. And rule #1 when dealing with automotive electronics is... If you don't know what it is and what it does; leave it alone. Ignoring this basic rule is a good way to fry something. I had to learn that lesson the hard way. The only people who are likely to watch this video are the ones who know little or nothing about performing such a repair. Viewers need to see each step and receive good instructions.

Will this also help add steering wheel controls to a truck that’s power everything but didn’t have the Steering Wheel Controls?
Really would have liked to seen more close up of the wiring harness I am planning on changing my wiring harness to try to retrofit steering wheel controls into a truck that did not have them.
Yeah no shit. That’s literally the hardest part. You can find the rest of the crap anywhere on UA-cam…..

Thank you for the detailed video! I was having trouble figuring out how to get the air bag off until I watched this.
Is there anyway you could post a close up video on how the lift and slide that module?
Nice job on explaining the clockspring removal & installation
Many thanks Bri, this DIY was very helpful for me to fix my Hummer H2 clock spring

Can the cheaper part save on all of the wire harness work and how easy is it to do !

Just disconnect it so you don't have to worry about the chance of blowing the airbag in your face.

Does the clockspring also act as the steering wheel position sensor for the gms?
No. That's a separate part at the bottom of the column
Steering wheel puller is not required to do this.. once the nut is removed, the wheel will pull right off
I did it without it. Just wiggle it up and down and it popped right off. Didn’t even take much force
If it doesn't, just hit it with a hammer on the sides and top/bottom. That took mine out lol. Use a towel to prevent damage to the wheel
Did you have an extra plug? That doesnt plug into anything?
Will this effect my brakes?
