Number 2 is completely ridiculous. It just further perpetuates The Stereotype that disabled people are strange and something to be feared. It's like saying, the last thing you want to do is end up like a disabled person because everyone knows that they get treated as less than human. I think it's sad that Society treats us if we are somehow inferior. Like that's really just very insulting, it's like saying they're scared of becoming like us it's this terrible thing and somehow if you end up disabled then you are less than whole and should be treated as less than human and infantilized. I'm sorry if I went too far with this but I think you get what I'm saying. It's just so hard to explain to people.

I use a walker ever since my neck and spine injury. People either jump out of the way or grab their children and pull them out of the way like I'm a monster going to eat them.😂

I love your sense of humor! My daughter has a wheelchair, and there are definitely times when it can be comical how people try to "help"! Someone should make a parody of Will Smith's song "Parents Just Don't Understand," and call it "Able-bodied People Just Don't Understand." 😂

I don't normally use a wheelchair, but have some pain issues and once I had really overworked myself the day before and had to grab some groceries. I'd barely made it to the door when I decided I was grabbing one of the motorized shopping carts (there were about half a dozen up front). I'd noticed how ridiculous people acted around them before, but was interested in seeing it from that perspective and was not disappointed. The one surprise I got though was when a child saw me coming, waited until I was close-ish and SHOVED his brother in front of me! I also don't usually try to parent strangers' children but that was a day of firsts because I lectured the hell out of that kid about how his brother and I could get hurt, how bad I would feel if I was involved in letting a little boy get hurt, and how disrespectful it was. Their mother was there, but never looked up from the corn she was sorting through. I'm still not sure if she was that oblivious or just wanted someone else to take care of it.

I use verbs ike "walk" and "run" most of the time. Using the verb "roll" or "rolling" to refer to getting around as if I were walking feels awkward. I after all, think of my wheels as my legs. In my 20 years of life I've only ever come across one of my friends who seemed to trip over the verbs I like using. You mentioning it in the video made me wonder how many wheelchair users use "walk and run" and how many find that uncomfortable, because I feel awkward using "rolling"
No one really knows exactly what constitutes normal but I think of myself as a normal person, and those verbs just come natural to me.

    • @SittingPrettyLolo
      @SittingPrettyLolo  5 років тому

Right which is why it doesn't offend me and I use walk and run too. It's just so funny when people think they've said something wrong by using the verbs. lol.

My friends and family are always telling me, “Let’s run and catch that bus”. Then they look at me and we both burst out laughing. I dig it, because it shows that they view me as a “regular” human being. As for those people who are trying to get out my way, it’s like we are dancing. I go one way, and they anticipate me going the same way...”lol” I’ve got one. Those who are walking while texting and you see them, long before they see you. I just wait until they are “thisclose”...The look on the faces when they see me is like...😳😳😳

Lol loved this video! You always make me laugh. I have had similar experiences as a blind woman. Sometimes when I’m out with my cane people will jump off the sidewalk and walk through the grass, like there isn’t enough room for both of us on the sidewalk. People also start tripping over their words like “did you see that movie…Um…I mean listen to it?“

Another one that happens to me a lot is when I'm getting on the bus, if there are people in the seats that fold up they'll often go all wide-eyed, and then EVERYONE in the front of the bus scrambles to move (or else nobody moves at all...)

I always hold the door open for people no matter what but for some strange reason if I’m not at the door for someone in a wheelchair quicker than the speed of light every EXCEPT the person in the wheelchair just loves to tell me how incredibly rude I am. It’s kinda funny tho cus I usually look at the other person and we just kinda exchange confused and mildly amused glances. Like Barbra chill I was already walking to the door.
Also the third one where people get out of dodge as soon as they see you coming is a bit ridiculous lol

  • @Mary-jh9up

SO ACCURATE! Idk if this happens to other people, but another one is when you are like shopping or something. And you stop to look at clothes (or whatever you are looking at) and people stop everything and get out of the way even if you aren't going anywhere. Like I've had people build up lines behind me bc they are too afraid to go around me (and theres plenty of room) and I'll say like "go ahead" or "oh, im not going that way." And they will insist on waiting for me to move and so I end up doing it... It makes no sense lol. Its a huge pet peeve if mine. Like just go around me like you would with an able bodied person! Anyways no offense to able bodied people if you read this, just one of those things haha

OMG yes!!!! All these situations have happened to me. Another one I find funny personally. Is when you are behind someone, they don't realise you are there and they reverse back and lightly knock into your chair. The shock and over reaction sometimes can be so extreme, to the point they can't stop apologising. You are there smiling and saying it's ok I'm fine. While they look like they just ran you over with their car 🤣🤣

Girl my sister-in-law does number three to me all the time. Like she sees me coming up my driveway and gets out of my way when she's more than 20 feet away from me. It's really kind of insulting. It's like Jesus, I can still walk and even if I couldn't there's nothing wrong with that. I just hate it because it's like she's drawing attention to me and treating me like I'm helpless and I hate it.

  • @sixmercer2504

The third one made me think of something when you said how people move out of our way 30 feet in front of us in a mall or supermarket. I used to HATE going to the mall because I'm only 5'0" tall and I haven't been using a wheelchair for too too long, so back when I could navigate the mall on my feet, nobody would ever move and I always felt like I was the pinball in a pinball machine. Dodging this rude tall person or that rude group pf people or the other family who just figured I was smaller, alone or with one other person who never noticed because they were always taller and didn't have that problem. I was always expected to move to one side or the other before we came within an inch of a head on (my head on their chest) collision. I got to the point when I was in my late teens early 20s...ok mid/late 20s, where I refused to move and would always come way too close to them before they would look at me like "how rude" and would quickly step out of my way.
I have had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome my whole life but was diagnosed late and misdiagnosed for 10 years before that. I always had a ton of chronic and acute joint pain or just pain pain. So the act of navigating a crowded place where just the fact I had to exert so much energy with severe chronic fatigue throughout my body, mind and soul, was far too much for me and I simpky stopped going to places like that.
Now I use a wheelchair if I have to exert more energy than it takes to unload it and put it together (I use a manual one so for me it also depends on the weather living in Colorado) or depending on how I'm doing that day and how far I will need to walk which for me is getting to the point I can't do more than go into the gas station to pay.
Now I need to try going to the mall on a weekend to see how much that has changed. I'm clearly shorter than 5'0" in my chair, but just like you said, people get flustered, they get overly helpful and concerned, like Annie Elainey said I feel like all eyes are on me which never bothered me before having grown up in the 80's punk scene, I had countless colors and countless mohawks and odd clothing choices compared to the norm long before Hot Topic was a twinkle in the eye of bad taste and exploitation. I was one of the punks the would get bullied and my guy friends were getting beat up for looking different.
Anyway....my point is, this video gave me the idea to give it a shot. The only issue is, I have a service dog too and she is one of those Siberian Huskies with the ice blue eyes and so all eyes are on her and not on me. I'm not sure the experiment will work right with her so I may need to take someone with me to hang with her while I bust through the crowd in my chair. I have Twion wheel assist so I can get that thing MOVING!!

People always get dramatic with giving me room too like pressing themselves against the wall as if I'm gonna sudden turn and aim for them! Another thing that I find funny now rather than annoying is the people that talk to me slowly and loudly, like they think I'm not all there just because I need my chair??
I've never had anyone refuse to use my chair as a chair out of superstition, to be honest the second I'm out of it some able bodied person wants to play in it like it's a toy. I understand when it's a kid but some adults need to grow up, using a wheelchair isn't that exciting surely
