    Lead should avoid flying full 100% power (military power for the jets with afterburner, or 100% for planes without afterburner) for a prolonged period of time, if he doesn't want to "force" his wingmen to go into afterburner once in a while. Lead should rather "give him a few percent" by pulling back to 96-98 % from the firewall, so that wingman can use his 100% to close up if he "gets sucked" (being "behind" in a formation as opposed to "acute", being forward of the optimal position) due to any manouver or mistake. It's more important on planes without afterburner, as with no afterburner, wingman has really no way to ever catch up in straight and level flight (only in turns by cutting corners), once he gets behind. Just my 2 cent...

      Spot on response. As part of a virtual display team, our lead normally flies at an even lower power setting, since flying at anything above 90% in the Hornet means the wingmen will from time to time pop into afterburner. We obviously fly clean aircraft with only 50% fuel, but there is rarely need for lead to be above 80% - 85% RPM, with only loops requiring a push to 90%.

      That’s actually not true. I fly with Growler pilots and F15E wso’s almost everyday. They told me they just kick it into mil power and just use there stick to modulate there airspeed, and it’s not the leads fault if the wso is out of formation and can’t keep up. Spud here was flying what’s called Line abreast or mostly “Fighting wing”. He did a good job. As well as I think I did a good job myself. Thanks for the response guys.
      Edit- We also don’t do acrobatics. We just fly parade form 25% of the time. On a combat sortie it’s normally 350 IAS and kicked out line abreast 1.0nm or Spread formation.

    Problem with most people trying to flight lead is they have a hard time bringing the throttle back, or make erratic stick inputs.

    Turning rejoins - you should be coming in on the 45
    you're doing more of a power rejoin - you're not taking advantage of the geometry

    • @skatterpro
      @skatterpro 5 років тому

      Could you explain this more in depth? Just joining on a 45 degree offset to have more time and space to move in case of an overshoot?

    • @SDsc0rch
      @SDsc0rch 5 років тому +1

      @@skatterpro - its efficient
      can control closure and react an overshoot
      also easier to see closure
      Approaching from the rear is what's called a power rejoin - and that is very difficult to judge closure until too late resulting in overshoots - also not efficient

    Formation is the building blocks for bfm
    What are the three problems you're trying to solve in bfm?
    Angles range and closure
    what are the solutions?
    Speed G and pursuit curves
    you use the same concepts in formation flying

    Oh yes.... The F-14 is really difficult to fly formation with. I almost only fly with people with 18's while I'm the only one with the 14, and every formation flight makes my look like a trash noob!😂 I've become decent in flying it overall, but formation is hard mainly because of the visibility, have to constantly lean around the cockpit to keep my eyes on my wingman. Specialy if you fly with people that don't lead really good, like accelerating, or climbing without any callouts and just casualy smalltalking, meanwhile I have to trimm the living shit out of the plane and keep my eyes glued to my canopy.😂

    • @Spudknocker
      @Spudknocker  5 років тому +3

      If you flip autupilot on even for just a split second in the F-14 she will auto trim out your pitch axis! This really really helps!

    Can't wait to try stupidly close formation flying (Cap, I see you!) in the F-16c with friends. DCS is just so beautiful!
    (20% less gas as wingman does not equate to 20% more gas as lead though, Spud. That's 25% extra as lead.)

      I currently have a RTX 2080 Ti, I7-7700K and 32GB of RAM, I have found that super sampling anti-aliasing with just a touch of MSAA really makes DCS looks great, the MSAA really cleans up the Mirrors

    Very cool vid, this is really helpful, i'm using a gamepad for the moment and close formation flying is tricky because of the deadzone and sensitivity management on the controller, but non the less applying all of what you guys said helps a lot, thanks to both of you!... Oh and yes, landing F-16 is something else, you can't slam it into the runway like an F-18.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Islands#Environmental_concerns Those "beautiful islands where people skydive" are actually a major environmental disaster for the entire region and their not sustainable. In other words, if you want to skydive there, you'll have to be quick before they disappear :P China is also trying to build military bases on artificial islands and those are also quickly becoming unstable.
    If you want proper waterworks, call the Dutch. We're the only ones who seem to get it right :PP
