Excellent video Spencer! We are also setting up a garden room with home office about 50m from the main Internet point where our BT-SH is located. We installed a Cat6 cable to a wall port like in your video... I didn't consider a second cable for resiliency like you did 🙆🏽♂️ Just need to decide which device, either a WAP or a Router appreciating that the latter will effectively be running in access point mode anyway.
Thanks Yussuf, your room sounds great 👍🏻 will you connect that to a mini switch first and then to an AP? I have used a zyxel kit which they have a free cloud management service. Best of luck with it.
Hi there, great video. I have a quick question, I'm planning to run a internet cable from the house to the garage.... Now, when cable in the garage I only can plug one thing. My question is can I run several things like ps5, laptop, tv of one cable or do I need several cables running for the house rauter to power the thing I need?! I hope it make sense.
Hi Mr Pash, one cable will work for all your devices, if you connect a inexpensive switch at the garage end then you can either connect an access point for WiFi and or cat5 directly from the switch to the device, the more ports on the switch the more devices can be connected. 👍🏻
Great vid mate....just what i needed to know......i been looking at extenders repeaters etc...etc...i foun d this a great help...considering...cat5 cable cheap as chips now.....but i have a sh*t...virgin router....thanks 👍🏴
Hi Spencer wondering if a Netgear Wireless Access Point (WAC104) would be any use for setting up a wireless network and if I would need to do any extra manual configuration to my standard virgin media router in the house or this netgear device? Not very clued up on the technical side of things so if I would need to do some configurations is there anyway of contacting you to get some more help during the process, cheers
Hi Naughton, I am happy to help but I am no expert on either of these devices :) You shouldn't need to do anything with your virgin router and I presuming you're connecting the AP via ethernet cable? if you are planning to connect the AP wirelessly, I have read on the forum that you can only do this if the other AP is the same model e.g. WAC104 -> WAC104 wirelessly. Via ethernet cable as per my video should be fine. I have found some instructions here www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwi78-jpmYz6AhXThc4BHVKXAMMQFnoECBEQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.downloads.netgear.com%2Ffiles%2FGDC%2FWAC104%2FWAC104_UM_EN.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1enr7hXLpv_vDfrzTsVA6D that explain how to connect to the AP and set it up in BRIDGE mode.
I pulled a UTP cable from near the router at home to the gardenhouse. How do I make sure I have good wifi in the garden house? Do i need to buy a access point or powerline?
An access point will work well, a powerline is for using your electrical wiring to extend your network. You’ve done the best thing by using UTP, needs terminating of not done already and connect AP. 👍🏻
@@Karim_Belgique I was making the assumption you had just run the cable and it still needs making up at each end, 'terminating' with either a RJ45 socket or plug
Hi. Do you have a video for setting up a Wi-Fi network in the garden room. I don’t want to Solely rely on having to plug in. I was told to add another router? Is this the right equipment to buy??
Hi Adam, instructions for setting up the WiFi will be dependent upon what access point you have/buy. You can use an old router or a dedicated AP. If you’re buying a new AP any good brand should suffice. Netgear etc. Look for setting up as bridge mode if using router. You should avoid having two DHCP servers running in one network. If there’s an option to disable DHCP on your router/AP, select to disable so your AP receives an IP address from your main router and also passes through addresses to your devices. Choose a WiFi name (SSID) and password. You could use the same ssid and paid as your main router and in this case your devices should just switch from one to the other when it senses a stronger signal. Or so that you know your device is connected to your new AP, select a different SSID.
If you're running a conductor then you're vulnerable to lightning strike frying your equipment Did you do anything to shield/ground the outside wire? Optical converters exist for applications like this
I would disagree that I am increasing my chances of a lightening strike when my cabling is running underground shielded within trunking. That said, all electronic equipment in the garden room is earthed via is mains electrical connection.
@@zx7rp2red this outside building is like a kids hangout we have game consoles and TVs heavy wifi use out there but it's not close enough to the house to get the houses connection
Thank you Spencer. I appreciate your straight forward information without any performance. You are awesome!!!

Excellent. Thanks a lot. Great job for first video. Well done.
Great explanation, much appreciated👌🏾
Glad it was helpful!

very informative
What If i want a router in the outside building?
Why would you need another router in your outside building? Depending on the router you may have issues, it would only work as a switch any way.
