    That Paphiopedilum is absolutely gorgeous. Paphs are one of my favourite type of orchid, and I just love the big ones. At one point I had 6 or 7 different rothschildianum hybrids before I realized how big they really get. Just beautiful - your philippinense x topperi :D

      Thanks, they do get big. This plant is about 15 years old now.

    Beautiful Paph, Brad. It is an investment of time when you buy a seedling of some of these. I always thought that orchids cultivated patience in us as well as the appreciation of their beauty. Great video!!!

    Vey nice! Paphs do grow slowly. I have several small ones. I've killed my share of them over the years!

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому

      Yes, these big guys grow so slowly. I think these fans take about 2.5 years to bloom. Good thing I have a few fans at different grow sizes now.

    Thanks for posting this video of such a wonderful plant. I have a similar Philippiniensis breed but only about 1 ft leafspan. I've had it about a year in a bright windowsill (with my catts) and the leaves are a healthy light green, with some yellowing on the bottom that looks natural, but in the past year it has ony sprouted one new leaf and that has grown about 3 inches! Pot is 3.5 inches and the potting medium is very coarse, mostly coconut husk from Repotme. No spagnum moss. I'm concerned because it seems it would take 100 years to reach the size of your plant, or even to reach blooming size! Should I repot it in a finer mix, or add some spagnum? I don't think I'm going to live to 100 and I would like to see it bloom someday! Please let me know. We are in Alaska, with long summer days and very short winter days. All my other orchids grow and bloom just fine, though not super-fast.

    I know this video is quite dated but I do have a question on multifloral paphs. I have two, Prince Edward of York and wossner black wing that are in bloom the first time.
    Sadly Some aphids got on the bloom of the PEY so it’s faded faster and the blooms are done now. The WBW is still in its full glory and going beyond a month now with 3 flowers (the 4th bud bud had broke off during delivery).
    So my question is, when is the right time to cut the spike off? Right after the last flower drops? Or, wait until the flower spike had dried up? Not sure if the same spike can result in any more flowers after first bloom, but I doubt it.
    I haven’t been able to find find a good source of an answer to this particular care question.
    PS. I do have a new growth starting on the WBW so that’s exciting. I’ll get a second fan in time.

    Rothchildianum's are my favorite Paphiopedilums and this one is a beautiful specimen. This Paph's leaves are really yellow though which concerns me. Do you think it is a light adjustment issue?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому

      thobbit60 it was in full sun which makes the leaves lighter, The camera might make them seems a little more yellow than they are. I wouldn't what to see them to dark of a green as it would be a sigh of not enough light

    • @thobbit60
      @thobbit60 10 років тому

      Ahhhh, I see. Usually light green leaves are optimum for paphio's so I was surprised that such a happy orchid had leaves that were so yellow. Your right it is probably the camera. It is a magnificent specimen plant.
