  • Today we take a look at the latest Paphiopedilum that bloomed and it's a really great one!
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
    Paphiopedilum philippinense is a species native to the Philippines and Borneo. More information about its natural habitat can be found here www.orchidspeci...
    It produces several flowers on a relatively long flower spike, which open in sequence. The spike doesn;t rebloom afterwards, but the flowers can stay in bloom for a few weeks.
    The flowers have the typical slipper shape, but the petals are long, slim and twisty! There is no fragrance, but the appearance is just lovely!

    I also have this, it is listed as a critically endangered species here in the Philippines, I am happy to see it taken care of by people around the world to save their species.

    You have been the worst (really the best) influence on me. After your video on Sogo Grape, I simply had to have one, so I ordered it. She is reported to be blooming size, but currently is not in spike. Then I have been searching and searching for Nelly Isler and finally found her. I also purchased her reportedly in spike!!! She is supposed to arrive by this weekend. Finally, I believe you had a video that pictured parishi. She was so precious, I had to have her too. I received her yesterday and she is in bloom and so sweet.

    Hey Danny I just wanted to say I'm glad this channel has flourished in the few years I'd not been around (didn't even realise you're in Cyprus now!). I love all the content! I'm wondering if you'd look at a small problem I had? p.s. I have philippinense too and it recently rebloomed!

    Hi Dani. I enjoy watching and learning from your channel! I recently had my first run in with the dreaded spider mite. I believe it crept in on a plant I had ordered online, and I was naive to them at the time. Needless to say, not anymore. Now, anything that I purchase is checked over multiple times with a magnifying loupe before I put it near my other orchids. However I still have a fear that I’m missing them, to the point where I almost obsess. I’ve studied about them so much, online, message boards, etc. that I don’t know what’s realistic information anymore. Could you possibly do a video explaining the process you have when bringing new orchids in, what steps you take for your whole greenhouse if/when you do find them lurking around, and just any other helpful tips regarding them? It might help to hear your first hand advice. Thank you!

    I was wondering if you have a video that talks about the difference in care between normal phals and species phals or phals like the mini mark?

    Hi Dani, Your paph is beautiful! A question about the multiflorals...how long did it take from new growth nubbin to blooming? I’ve heard each growth takes 2 years to mature and bloom. If that’s true, it’s too long for me. Thanks for any info you can provide.

    Hi Danny! Thanks for all your videos, they're helping me so much with my collection. But sadly, I have problems with a worm species called "Enchytraeidae" .They're small and transparent looking worms and they mostly prefer my oncidium and dendrobium types of orchids to live in their medium. I've tried hydrogen peroxide 3% many times but they keep coming back and I don't want to disturb their roots anymore since I failed so far. Do you know about these worms? Are they harmful to my orchids? And do you have a solution for this? I'd be so glad if you have an answer... Thank you so much...

    Love this breed! Can I grow this on full water culture?

  • @noijel
    @noijel 6 років тому

    Hey Danny, is it bad that my medium dries within a few hours. I'm using leca balls but it's bigger than the leca that you're using. Also, what do you think of mixing sphagnum moss and leca? Is it bad to use that combination?
    Also, I just bought a phal a few weeks ago and repotted it in bloom. And gradually, the leaves started to get droopy and the flowers that bloomed were smaller and less vibrant. Is it because of shock or watering problems or maybe fertiliser because I didn't use any for her?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 років тому

      Hi, it's not bad but it's hassling. You can use a combination yes, but you will need to repot regularly because organic medium decomposes. The new orchid might have a root loss issue, fertilizer defficiencies appear after one year, more or less. So check the roots first, my best guess is they are lacking, provided you water enough.

      JjangJjangManBboongBboong Are you using reservoir with your Leca setup ? That should help prevent Leca from drying too quickly.

    • @noijel
      @noijel 6 років тому

      Thomas M Ooh, maybe I'll try it out with one of them to see whether it works. Thanks for the suggestion :)

      JjangJjangManBboongBboong Danny has many videos for semi hydro setups which is the use of Leca. They’re good watching and learning experience. If your pot had a drainage hole on bottom, can use another pot outside to provide reservoir to create a semi hydro system.

    How do you think paphiopedilum evolved to have long petals?

    • @--Paws--
      @--Paws-- 6 років тому +1

      broken keys111 - many claim it is to attract a certain beetle and other insects that can also 'read' the patterns expressed by the orchid; paphiopedilums or whatever. The plant has somehow adapted to communicating to certain insects to help it pollinate.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 років тому +1

      Well one hypothesis suggests that the long petals are attracting ants to climb on the flowers and protect them. Some orchids also produce fragrant compounds at the tip of these pendant petals. But more about this in my 'did you know' video for fragrance ;)

      broken keys111 I don’t believe in the evolution theory. I believe that’s how they were created
