- Plant-based and cultivated meat are poised to transform the global food system. In an eye-opening talk, food innovator Bruce Friedrich shows how government support can move this industry forward, revolutionizing the way we eat. Bruce Friedrich is cofounder and executive director of The Good Food Institute (GFI), an international nonprofit that is fostering a sustainable, healthy and just agricultural system through food innovation. With branches in the United States, India, Israel, Brazil, Europe and Asia Pacific, GFI is accelerating the production of plant-based and cell-based meat, eggs and dairy in order to bolster the global protein supply while protecting our environment, promoting global health, and preventing food insecurity and animal cruelty.
Friedrich has penned op-eds for the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Wired and many other publications. He has appeared on The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News and a variety of programs on MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN. Friedrich holds distinguished degrees from Georgetown University Law Center, Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Absolutely phenomenal discussion. Thank you, Bruce. Excellent exposure of the global meat industry.
He didn't even mention that animal agriculture makes epidemics and pandemics much more likely.
Examples include swine flu, bird flu, SARS, MERS, and possibly this current pandemic.
The last pandemic in 1918 originated in a poultry farm here in the USA.
Conditions in factory farms are especially problematic.
Not to mention a massive reduction in animals suffering all over the planet
Thank you. Not even the regressives have a reply for this one. Although I'm surprised one of them didn't say it was all "Obama's fault", since that or it was "Clinton's fault" is the basis for most of their arguments these days.
It's vegan diet cause of more killed animals

That's the most important video of all times!
I want to try that meat without animals! It’s hard to find them in Korea.
There's so many types of mock meat in Korea, you can even get fake Lamb, just have a look around :")
Trac Fake lamb? Wow didn’t know
@Joe Curry it really depends bro, my taste buds changed almost overnight, but what actually changed was my perception. I cant stomach the thought of eating a dead body so im grateful for the plant based replacements. Its all a mindset, you dont even need mock meats, you just need a bit of mindfulness and gratitude for what you have in the pantry
@@trac204 i couldn't eat that pretend meat
Imagine a world where animals are not killed anymore on a daily basis!
I think that's how nature works 🤔
Eden.Paradise.Eutopia.Heaven-on-Earth!
Very positive direction, I was already into the idea, but this video is very well done... no puns intended lol
@Eric M he obfuscated and conflated everything. Abominable agent of Big Ag
I don't know about the guy presenting the case, I just know that livestock takes a lot of land and resources to produce and going vegan is not realistic for most people so this is a good solution for those problems
@Eric M what health concerns do you mean? Are you against meat in general like vegan is a better direction or you mean lab meat isn't safe or something like that?
@@aticosmos5156 how will you grow without livestock- stay enlightened how crops are grown
@Rosario Selvakumar what do you mean by "grow without livestock" and "stay enlightened how crops are grown", there is no livestock in this case...
The most compelling and reasoned description of why and how fundamental change in meat production is needed.
@Bitterkind they say lab grown meat's healthier than natural meat
Think of the plant meat cultivators in laboratory safe conditions being spared the PTSD and health risks that animal processing workers go through!
They don't all get PTSD; some ("hopefully"? most 😕 🤦) do, but some people go into that field specifically because it's a way for them to exhibit violence and cruelty and kill without going to jail. :-|
@Joe Curry We all see and operate based on completely different lenses, cultivated through past life experiences. I don't know what leads ppl to do aweful things, but I have a suspension it has to do with the fact that they lack the experiences I have gone through that have made me more and more compassionate. I pity the soul who has not known as much love as I've been lucky enough to know. I can't imagine who I'd be without my love and my pain.
True. Not only mental problems, but physical health gets damaged as well. One friend of mine told me about her step father who damaged his health through work in a poultry slaughter house.
@@user-vn7ce5ig1z To this, I say that it gives society a chance to weed out those individuals and get them the help they need to be rehabilitated or imprisoned if they don'twant to change, I suppose. We can't save everyone. But I believe it shouldn't be due to lack of effort.
@Joe Curry yo, I'm not sure if you thought I meant spiritually clean? It wasn't a statement on religion. I meant laboratory meat aka "clean" meat. No cancerous lumps grown into it. No dangerous bacteria or antibiotics. I honestly think if everyone learned about all the edible plants and how to cook them, if we could get that to be common knowledge, fake meats would likely be a rarity in day to day meals. But as the world is, people won't change if they have to compromise on the taste. I hate it, but facts are just that. So if this is how we go about change, and people can get behind this method over oppressing animals, then I'm all for it.
I’m telling you what we eat is killing us
Yes, starches and sugars. Plant foods
Mehrdad Dalamie processed food
If you eat sugar, yeah.
Grass fed meat heals !
I am proof. I was plant based for many years, healed all my health issues by ditching a plant based diet.
@@apteryx7080 It's far more likely that you had a food sensitivity or gut issue rather than being healed by meat. You take that sensitivity out of the diet then think it's the meat that healed you. So it's not being plant based rather taking a component/food item out of your diet such as foods high in anti-nutrients and oxalates... Simply take these trigger foods out or lower them
Wow! What a great movement to get behind. I definitely want to see much more innovation. I don't believe that a real solution to these problems (in our lifetimes at least) can be found any other way.
Lol. The least of our problems.
This is the future of food! Thanks, Bruce!

It's not that crazy, because college education is only for privileged people.

We can save the planet and the animals at the same time.
When plant based and lab grown meat become cheaper than normal meat, then I believe that's when we'll see a serious change in the meat market.
yeah
yup,serious change
The meat industry is heavily subsidized. Change this and lab meat becomes competitive.

@@nataliee5501 I hear it a lot, but I eat soy (notmodified) for last 13 years, all blood test and general health perfect (i'm a male)
@@MARISRUBINS i am a doctor. Firstly soy is not nature, so it is genetically engineered. I mean to say made with gram negative bacteria and fungi with the ability to alter DNA. They are latent mostly in the intestines and will cause serious health problems in the future, mostly lysosomal storage diseases.
Wheatgrass for example is not the same as wheat grain. All grains are genetically engineered foods, same with tomatoes, sunflower seeds, phyllium husk etc.
Plant based anything is not plant and has no nutrients, but will obliterate your body.
All life is made of MICROORGANISMS they are responsible for everything. Cell signalling, cell transportation, all nutrients, repair DNA, they are the immune and remove toxins, gram negatives and radiation. Now turn all of that in reverse.
Do not i repeat, do not get near bio, or plant based anything, they are all genetically engineered.
If the origin of the plant is considered a pest or is aggressive stay away.
If you want to eat properly may i suggest you eat your food raw. When you cook you kill the MICROORGANISMS so might as well not eat. Stay away from cow milk. Goat's milk cheese and yoghurt are similar to mother's milk. I hope this helps.

There weren't outbreaks at the slaughterhouses. That was the excuse used to close them down. The slaughterhouses are all owned by the people pushing this fake and harmful food substitute on us. It is as toxic to us as palm oil and corn syrup which are the main two components of the current obesity epidemic, and I think you will find the same people behind these products.
@Roger Lewis : So the same people who own the slaughter houses are the ones conspiring to shut them down? Can you say: _logic?_ I wouldn't be at all surprised if you also believe China created covid19 and *attacked themselves* with it when they could have just as easily sent one infected person on a plane to anywhere else in the world and no one would ever have known. Not even that first infected person would need to know.
Spot on Laura. I agree with you. If we aren't going to change on our own, the Universe will do it for us.

I need a burger now! I really would like to try a 1/4 burger of this. I would happily pay $20 or $30 for it if I could find some. It would be like using a cell phone before they were commonplace.

Thank you for the explanation. I totally agree we need more support from government to ensure plant-based meat can be affordable to all household. As we know, people did not buy plant-based meat because of their expensive price and people rather buy meat product although they know plant-based meat is much healthier. If this industry can get more fund from government, they can improve the quality of plant-based meat and they can also produce much affordable product to consumer.

I completely agree that we need more assistance from the government to make sure that plant-based meat is affordable for every household. In a perceptive speech, food pioneer Bruce Friedrich demonstrates how government assistance can advance this sector and transform how we eat. As is well known, despite the fact that plant-based meat is way healthier, consumers choose to purchase meat products due to the higher cost of plant-based meat. The quality of plant-based meat could be improved, and producers could create much more reasonably priced goods for consumers, if this sector of the economy could receive more funding from the government.

Remarkable explanation by Bruce Friedrich. However, I believe that lots of us will support " The Future of Food". This is because the time that needs to produce a meat which is taste the same or better is lesser. Furthermore, old method which used to produce the meat will cause negative impact such as population, spewing vehicles, gas-guzzling pollution and many more, to avoid this we need two options, which is plant-based meat and grow the cells directly. In my opinion, plant-based meat is much more efficient, which cost lesser and taste better. Plant-based meat are also higher in fiber and other nutrients, and are definitely more sustainable
